Captain Sparrow had been caught, and was in jail. James had told me himself. He would be hanged in the morning. I should have felt relief at the news my friend had given me, but I couldn't help but think that my ordeal wasn't over.
He had noticed mine and Elizabeth's necklace. He had recognised it for what it was. Elizabeth had asked to wear it again after we had gotten home, and I was forced to bed rest even though I didn't require it. She was wearing it now, as Rebecca tucked a heater pan into the covers at the end of my bed. I wasn't cold anymore, and I didn't need the care, but everyone around me insisted I was in shock from the events of today.
"There you go, miss. It was a difficult day for you, I'm sure." Rebecca struck up conversation, as she tucked me in like I was four.
"I had suspected Commodore Norrington would ask my permission to marry my sister, but I wasn't entirely prepared for it." I remarked, as I read one of my pirate novels. Elizabeth had told me that after James had given me the news about Sparrow, he had asked to speak to her quietly, and had proposed then. She hadn't given him an answer yet, having begged for a couple of days to consider it.
"Yes, well, I was even less prepared for the actual proposal." Elizabeth said, as she read quietly to herself.
"I meant Miss Isabel being threatened by that pirate! Sounds terrifying!" Rebecca replied, fussing over my sheets.
"Oh, yes, it was rather terrifying." I lied, giving Rebecca a bashful smile.
"But…the Commodore proposed! Fancy that. That's a smart match, miss, it it's not too bold to say." Rebecca said to Elizabeth, who smiled, though I could tell it wasn't a genuine smile. It didn't reach her eyes and make them sparkle the way a real smile did.
"It is a smart match," Elizabeth replied, staring at the empty space ahead of her. "He's a fine man. He's what any woman should dream of marrying."
"But that Will Turner…he's a fine man, too." Rebecca said, and I knew then that she had pushed Elizabeth too far, and crossed a boundary that not many of our staff would. I liked Rebecca, she was a lovely girl, but she sometimes, like me and Elizabeth, didn't understand the social hierarchy and would sometimes cross lines she only half knew existed.
"That is too bold." Elizabeth reprimanded the maid.
"Well, beggin' your pardon, miss. It was not my place." Rebecca replied, before she left the room.
Once I heard her footsteps echoing down the hall, I climbed out of bed. Elizabeth watched me as I moved to our shared closet, and dug in the back until I found the male clothing I had stashed in there for when I snuck out to find Will. I hastily began to dress, and waited for Elizabeth to voice her disapproval. I had just tying my hair up when she finally spoke.
"Where are you going dressed like that? You should be resting." Elizabeth chided me, as I pulled on a tri-corn hat, not too dissimilar to the one Captain Sparrow had been wearing, and pulled on my boots.
"I need to understand, Elizabeth. Why did he save me only to threaten my life once more? It doesn't make much sense, and I won't be able to rest until it does. And as he is going to be hanged tomorrow, I need to sneak out and get my answers." I said, as I pulled on a waistcoat that showed that I was a woman, and then a coat with a matching pattern.
Elizabeth sighed, knowing that she could not persuade me to stay and wait until the morning.
"If anyone should discover you're missing from your bed, would you like me to lie for you?" Elizabeth questioned, rubbing a hand through her curly locks.
"If you would be so kind, sister, that would be helpful. I will be back before day break. Try to get some sleep." I instructed her, as I left the room, being especially quiet and stealthy as I manoeuvred the same route I always did when I snuck out. Down the corridor, down the stairs, tip-toeing past the servants quarters, then out of the kitchen exit where no one should be at this time of night.
I stole out of the grounds of the manor, and as soon as I was out of hearing and seeing distance, I ran towards town as fast as my legs could carry me. No one recognised me as I walked through the filthy streets of the town, tipping the front of my hat downwards as I walked past the blacksmith's shop, in case Will saw me. He would recognise me in an instant. And I didn't have time to answer all of his questions.
I had taken some money with me to the jail, so I could bribe the jailer to let me talk to Sparrow, but it turns out I didn't have to. I had noticed an eerie feeling spreading though me as I had walked through town, but I had ignored it, putting it down to paranoia. Yet as I headed into the jailhouse, cannon fire almost sent me sprawling. The guards and the jailer hurried out, and I rushed in, hoping that the cannons wouldn't attack the jailhouse with her inside it.
I rushed down to the cells and there were many pirates who perked up at seeing what looked like their rescuer.
"Finally!" One of them almost cried.
"I'm not here for you," I said, as I found who I was looking for. He was sitting on the bench in his cell. His hat was tipped forward to shield his eyes, but she knew he could see her as she stopped in front of his cell.
"Jack Sparrow."
"Who wants to know?"
"Isabel Swann." I replied, taking off my hat, revealing my face. Sparrow pushed his up, and showed his surprise.
"Didn't think I would see your pretty face again, especially not disguised like this. I think I prefer the dress. Now what do I owe this…pleasure?" He questioned, as he walked towards me, resting his arms on the cell door that was firmly locked.
"I want some answers, Mr Sparrow-"
"Captain." I rolled my eyes at him, and repeated the title he wished for me to use, before I continued speaking.
"Why did you save my life? You got no reward for doing so, other than being locked up in here." I asked, and he smirked at me.
"Trying to find something redeemable about me, love? I saved you because you were a damsel in distress, and I've always had a thing for those." He said, his eyes trailing down my body, before they came up again and stayed zoned in on my breasts. The waist coat admittedly was probably not the best idea as it had a way of accentuating that particular area. I buttoned my coat at the top, and he pouted for a moment in disappointment.
"How did you get caught?"
"A blacksmith hit me over the head with a bottle," He admitted, as he stared at me. "I was distracted by his eunuch apprentice."
"Will?
"Is that the whelp's name?" Sparrow questioned.
"He probably fought you. That's exactly like him. And the only way you'd win was by cheating." I said, giving him a pointed look.
"I made it an even fight. That's all, love."
Before I could retort to his statement, cannon fire ripped a whole through the wall of the jail, and I ducked, covering my head with my arms as rubble flew past me. Once I was sure it was safe, I watched as the pirates from the cell next to Captain Sparrow's climbed out of the newly made hole, leaving Jack fuming and alone in his cell.
"You do have the worst luck, Captain Sparrow." I remarked, as I watched him pace around his cell.
"Help me out of here, love." He demanded. I wasn't expecting him to ask nicely, but anything nicer than the way he had asked would have convinced me to actually help him.
"You threatened my life! Why would I help you escape?" I asked, completely incredulous.
"Because you find me oddly alluring and attractive. You're not like most other women of your status, and you, my bonny lass, want adventure. Something I can give you, if you get me out of here."
I stared at him, weighing my options. There was no doubt in my mind that Port Royal was under attack, which made me start to panic. I had left Elizabeth on her own. If anything happens to her it would be my fault. I pursed my lips as I debated whether or not to help the man who had used me as a bargaining chip.
"Pass me that bone." I said, sighing, knowing that he was going to make me regret helping him. He gleefully handed the bone to me, and I walked over to the dog that was laying under a bench, and cooed and stroked him until he dropped the keys and accepted the bone.
I grabbed the keys and was about to unlock Jack's cell when a gunshot went off just above us, and a guard tumbled to the ground. The dog bolted down a corridor and I followed it, praying that whoever had just killed the last remaining guard at the fort's jailhouse wouldn't kill Captain Sparrow. I had my ticket out of Port Royal and the boring monotony of my upper class life. Jack was right after all, I wanted adventure.
I ran through the fort, until I found James' office, and I knocked on the door. Someone had to be in there. James, I knew, would be up on the battlements with his men, but maybe my father was in there.
"State your name." That was most definitely her father's voice, and I breathed a sigh of relief that at least I knew my father was okay.
"Isabel Swann." The door immediately swung open, and he grabbed my arm and pulled me inside, before locking the door behind me, and pushing Norrington's desk in front of it.
"What are you doing here? It's not safe!" My father questioned and I could see the panic on his face. Then he looked down at me and gasped. "What are you wearing?"
"I snuck out of the house to talk to that pirate. I'm sorry, Father. I knew I shouldn't have, but I just wanted to understand why he had saved me. I still don't understand it. He's a pirate! He could have just let me drown," I sighed, and sat down on a chair that was against one of the walls of James' office. "I think something bad has happened to Elizabeth."
"What makes you say that? She could be safe at home for all you know." Father said, trying to sound optimistic.
"Elizabeth and I have always had a deep connection, Father. I always know when she's sad, or happy, or angry, even when it's not clear to her what she's feeling. I know something is wrong." I explained, even though I was still in the stage where I was hoping that my heart was wrong and that the ache in it was just a symptom of my dip in the ocean earlier that day.
Father slumped into James' chair and nodded, a grim expression on his usually cheery face.
"There's not much we can do but wait, my girl. We'll wait for Commodore Norrington to come and then do a search of the town. If we can't find Elizabeth, then we'll discuss further actions with the Commodore." My father said.
I hoped that with my father's plan that we would be able to help Elizabeth out of whatever predicament she had gotten herself into. But somehow I knew that my hope was going to be short-lived.
