Epilogue
The day of the party had arrived.
Despite TayTay's pleas to hold the party in Taytown, they decided to have it in Annville. Taytown was further out of the way. Everyone coming from great distances would have less distance to travel if they went to Annville. Dizzy trusted Alexann would be a better hostess than TayTay, anyways. TayTay would have only had sweets to eat—not that there was anything wrong with that, but Dizzy was in the mood for a ten-course meal.
The morning of the party, the hungry elephant put on his favorite shirt and headed straight to the train station. He brought a dessert of his own to supply at the party. Not eating it on the train would be a struggle, but he had the willpower to resist.
Once at the station, he found himself waiting next to a familiar pink squirrel on the platform.
Peanut. He hadn't talked to her for days.
"Uh…hi Peanut, woo-oo," he greeted. "Off to visit Marshal?"
Peanut looked pleasantly confused. "No, I'm off to visit my sister, Blaire. Who's Marshal?"
Dizzy's heart dropped into his stomach. He could not find the words to answer Peanut's inquiry. Luckily, he didn't have to. Her train pulled up and she departed with a friendly wave. Dizzy tried to shake off the sadness that threatened to overtake him. It was a necessary sacrifice, to save all those humans. At least Peanut was still happy. He was sure Marshal was as well, wherever he was.
Soon enough, the train departing for Annville bore him away. The ride passed by fairly quickly. Dizzy could feel excitement blooming within him. He couldn't wait to see everyone again.
Annville was a very clean and friendly town. As soon as Dizzy arrived, a cool-looking koala with sunglasses approached him. "You here for the party?" he asked with a grin.
Dizzy nodded, wide-eyed.
"Follow me! Name's Eugene, by the way. What'd you get saddled with?"
"Dizzy."
"Cool. I see you brought a little somethin' somethin'." He nodded at the container in Dizzy's hands. "Good for you!"
Eugene the koala led Dizzy to where the picnic was taking place. It was on a spacious, grassy hill that seemed to touch the clear blue sky. A balloon arch had been set up at the entrance. Blankets were spread out all over the incline, with tables in the flatter areas near the bottom. Patties and hot dogs simmered on a nearby grill, blessing the air with the smell of barbeque. Bowls of fresh fruit and vegetables could be found in every corner. A kiddie pool had been set up too. Someone was already in it—
"Marshal?!" Dizzy gasped.
The white, rosy-cheeked squirrel was sitting in the pool. "Oh, hey Dizzy," he said coolly.
Dizzy was about to ask why he had moved or whether he remembered Peanut, but he wasn't so sure he wanted to hear the answer. His friend was alive and well. Before he could continue their conversation, a crowd of the humans he had rescued whisked him off. They were all demanding he help himself to the finest food, in thanks for all he had done.
The next hour consisted of Dizzy having food thrust in his face. Not that he was complaining. But as his stomach became fuller and fuller, he began to wonder something.
"Where's TayTay?" Dizzy asked, extricating himself from his fans and approaching Alexann. She was standing with Eugene, sipping on punch.
Alexann looked around. Then she pointed towards the balloon archway. "Oh look, there she is now. Fashionably late as always."
There stood TayTay, in a pretty party dress and a white flower in her pink hair. Her hair was let down and her dark eyes shone brighter than ever.
"Hey! TayTay!" Becca shouted, aiming her party popper at her friend and showering her with confetti. "About time!"
"You'we just in time fow dessert!" Ness cheered.
"And then we're gonna play some games," Hip added with a wink. A bandage was wrapped around his forehead, but he was livelier than ever.
TayTay emitted a squeal of glee, hopping up and down exuberantly. Her smile was so wide it looked like it would burst.
Dizzy just stood there smiling, taking in the scene. Things were back to normal. No, they were better than normal. Normal was that boring life in Startown he had left behind for an exciting new life in Taytown. And he could not have been happier with that life-changing decision.
TayTay's eyes settled on Dizzy. Her smile got even wider, if that were possible. The next thing he knew, she was sprinting at him. He braced himself for impact.
"DIZZYYY!"
Thanks to his preparedness, Dizzy managed to keep from tipping over as TayTay slammed into him. She hugged him with all her might—or as much might as her one arm would allow her.
Dizzy grinned and squeezed her back, until she let out a high-pitched gagging sound. Then he released her. She caught her breath, gasping and laughing at the exertion.
"I missed you!"
Dizzy frowned. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"
"Don't even joke about that!" TayTay growled, playfully smacking his shoulder. Still, her face glowed with happiness. "C'mon, let's get something to eat." She grabbed his hand and dragged him towards the buffet table.
Alexann and Hip came over to meet them. "Going straight for dessert, TayTay?" Alexann questioned, arching an eyebrow.
"What else is new?" Hip chuckled.
TayTay just giggled.
"Oh! That reminds me," Dizzy said suddenly. He walked down the length of the table, looking for the container he'd brought with him. TayTay followed him curiously. "Ah! Here it is."
Dizzy picked up the container and pried the lid off. TayTay's eyes went wide at what she saw.
It was a fresh-baked chocolate pie covered in delectable whipped cream and chocolate shavings. TayTay stared at it, swallowing a few times. Then she lifted her eyes to Dizzy's.
"Is that…chocolate pie?" She asked in a small voice.
Dizzy nodded proudly.
"But that's my favorite. How did you…?"
Dizzy laughed and winked. "You know what they say: an elephant never forgets."
