First of all: I'm really sorry for not updating it earlier! I know I'm more than a month late to post this chapter...

I do have a reason though (maybe not a very good reason, but a reason nonetheless): I had to really think this chapter through because, despite being short, it will end this second part of Elli's story and give me the support to begin the third and final installment.

Yes, 'Pursuing' ends here; in a confusing and short chapter. But, the story will be continued in a sequel. ;)

Reason for splitting the fic (again): I really think that the Campania arc puts an end to the development of Eliza's character through her relationship with the rest of the cannon characters, especially Ciel and Sebastian. Besides, on the third part of the fic, I'll (finally!) focus on my original plot. You still remember it, right? the one about Chamberlin, Boris and transforming humans in demons... XP

Anyway, this chapter IS quite confusing, but that's intentional. Everything here will be explained on the third installment of the fic. A piece of advise though: read the first chapter of 'When being better isn't good enough'. It'll help you grasp the details of this epilogue.

Also, as it happened in 'Living', this epilogue is NOT in Elli's pov.

So, annoyingly long AN given, let me send a thank you to tetisheri and Shadow Fox 2013 for reviewing to the last chapter. And a thank you to all who fav/alerted this fic. :)

Now, enjoy the last chapter of 'Pursuing'.

In a large mansion, located on the countryside of the state of New York, on the United States of America, a woman ran up the stairs desperately. She was beautiful, with long blonde hair that cascaded down her back in thick curls and large green eyes that, at the moment, were burning in rage and fear.

"David!" She called urgently as she slammed a bedroom's door open. "Wake up, David!"

In the bedroom, a black-haired man laid on the king-sized bed, covered to the head by thick blankets. The man, David, grumbled and put his pillow over his head in an attempt to block the woman's shrieking voice from his ears.

"I mean it, David! Wake up! We have huge problems!"

With a low growl, David took his pillow off his face and sat up on the bad, narrowing his blue eyes in annoyance at noticing that it was still dark outside.

"Why the fuck did ya wake me up, Anny?" David complained. "The sun isn't even up yet! Wait, did ya just get here from the labs?"

"Yes! And they are going to take the next step, David!" The woman, Anny, spoke in a hysteric voice, throwing her arms around the man's neck and burying her face in his chest.

David's eyes doubled in size and he pushed the woman away from him, holding her shoulders softly at arm-distance.

"What ya talking about, Anny?"

"Lucifer developed the perfect formula, David!" Anny was crying now. "They found out what was missing to create and control demons! There are already dozens of people on the last stages of the transformation and brainwashing!"

"What?! But… How… Why the fuck did ya find out about it just now?!" David demanded angrily. "How didn't ya notice they were so close before?!"

"Only Dr Bannan and his most trusted workers knew about it until today." Anny spoke in a low voice. "They have just announced it to the rest of the laboratory. They say we'll be ready to depart in a few months."

David gulped audibly and stood up from the bed to walk to the window; he needed some fresh air. Anny's gaze travelled his thin body, taking in his long black hair and all of the scars that criss-crossed his back and arms. She was sure that, beneath his loose pants, his legs were also covered by scars.

Biting her lower lip, Anny approached the man from behind, feeling her cheeks burn in anxiety. Hesitantly, she encircled her arms around the man's waist and laid her head on his shoulder, planting a kiss to his neck. David wasn't particularly tall, and he was very thin, but something about the confident way he moved and talked had always attracted her to him, and she never allowed an opportunity to show that to pass her by.

"Don't even begin, Anny." David said tiredly.

Still, the man never returned her affections.

"Don't make me go, David." Anny pleaded, tightening her grip on the man's body. "Please, I'm scared. Let me stay with you tonight."

"Anny, we've been through thi-"

"You love someone else, I know." Anny spoke, hiding her bitterness in sadness and fear. "But, we don't have to do anything. I can even sleep on the floor. Just… don't leave me alone. Not with they out there."

"Ya know I'm just like they, don't ya?"

"That's not true. You have control of your actions. They don't. Those... things killed my parents and would've killed me too, if not for you. You protect me, David."

David sighed heavily and walked to the bed to retrieve a pillow.

"Ya can take the fucking bed. I'll sleep on the floor."

Anny smiled softly as the man dropped the pillow on the floor and laid his head on it with a low curse. It wasn't what she had hoped for: spending the night in David's arms. But it was something, and God forbid the woman from rejecting any sort of the attention from the man.

"Thank you, David."

Three days later

David was sitting at a table in the mansion's veranda, angrily eating his way through a mountain of food that was displayed before him as he observed the sun set. Anny was taking too long to come back from the laboratory. Again.

Ever since Anny had told him that Lucifer had managed to create and control demoniac humans successfully, David had been on edge, thinking about ways to stop the organization. Originally, he and Anny had intended to falsify the formula as soon as the first signs of their success appeared, but that was no longer an option. Lucifer had out-smarted them, creating an even more exclusive group of scientists to work in secret on the most important experiments, leaving the regular scientists, such as Anny – David's contact inside the organization -, out of the loop.

In other words, he had failed and, because of it, Lucifer would be able to follow to the next step: mass-production of demoniac humans. After that, came the step that David dreaded most of all: Lucifer's return to London, the place where it all began.

Taking an angry bite off a piece of fatty pork meat, David glared at the sky before him. He hated that he failed. With all his heart, David hated the fact that he would not be able to keep Lucifer from going back to England. He had wanted to stop them right there in America, where the damage wouldn't be able to reach her.

"Master David." An elderly woman called Christine, the mansion's governess – why the fuck did they have a governess, anyway? There were no children! – approached him. "A letter has come from Lady Anna."

Christine raised the letter to him and, without a word, David snatched the letter away from the old woman's hand and began reading it, ignoring Christine as she walked away from him. He wasn't used to read, so the activity took him much longer than normal.

"Forgive me, David, but I won't be able to come home to you'

David scoffed. Seriously? Come home to him? Anny was a good ally against Lucifer and he liked her well-enough as a friend, but her silly infatuation with him really grated on his nerves sometimes. Sometimes, he regretted saving her from the couple of failed experiments that had managed to escape Lucifer's compound in America.

Well, whatever. Back to the letter.

"They are over-working all the staff so they can produce as many demons as possible in a short amount of time. It seems that Lucifer intends to act sooner than we expected. I overheard some of the other scientists talking about being ready by a certain ship's maiden voyage. Campania was the name of the ship, I believe. I don't know what's important about that ship. Maybe they intend to use it to go to England?

Well, that's it for now. As always, burn this letter as soon as you finished reading it.

Love,

Anna."

A loaf of bread in hand and some in his mouth, David glared at the letter for a couple of seconds before raising himself to walk into the mansion, to the fireplace, in where he threw the offending piece of paper. Still chewing and glaring, David observed the letter turn to ashes before his eyes.

He had heard about the Campania from some of the farmers around; they were excited because it would bring some of their families' members that still lived in London to America. In other words, Anny was wrong; the ship's maiden voyage would not be Lucifer's way of transportation, because it was a ship coming from England, not going there. So, what was the importance of its maiden voyage to Lucifer?

The answer was simple: none. To Lucifer, to the organization, that maiden voyage couldn't mean shit. That lead David to believe that the Campania was actually a personal interest of Lucifer's owner and patron: Chamberlin.

David growled.

No doubt, Chamberlin, that idiotic nancy-boy, was involved in some other serious shit besides the Lucifer Project. And, as it seemed, that shit was happening in England, where she was located. And, knowing her, she already managed to get herself involved with the nancy-boy and his demon butler again.

Defeated, David let his body fall on an armchair in front of the fire. If his predictions were right, his efforts in keeping her away from Chamberlin were in vain and now, because he failed to keep the Lucifer Project from being concluded, she would be in even more danger. There was no way he could keep them from going to London now.

"If I can't stop them here, I'm going after them." David settled, taking another bite of his bread. "Fuck. I can't believe I'm going back to London. And all because of ya… Elli."

Well, I don't even have to say who David truly is, right? ;)

Yes! Darrel is coming back! Hmm, I wonder... how he will explain his absence to Elli?

As always, please review. Any kind of criticism (flames included) is very appreciated. :)

Kisses,

RedVoid

PS: I'll post an AN here to let you know when the first chapter of the sequel is ready. ;)
