Loki never really paid much attention to Asgard's gatekeeper when he was younger. Partly because Heimdall frightened the young prince, but mostly because he was always so far away from the palace that Loki rarely thought of the man. And in turn, Heimdall paid the young prince no extra thought than he did anyone else in the realms.
The first memory Loki could clearly recall of the gatekeeper was when he was a very young boy on one of the rare instances when Heimdall had left his post at the Bifrost's edge and stood before Odin's golden throne. He was there to give a report of the other realms, or something, Loki could not remember. What he did recall was how large the gatekeeper truly was. Towering over the palace guards was no small task. It was an even greater feat to the young Loki since he only reached the mid-torso of the average guard himself.
Almost immediately, Loki was beginning to fear the gatekeeper, and as a small child does, he abandoned his spot by Odin's side and sought shelter behind his father, wrapping himself around the large red cape. Suddenly, Odin stopped talking and turned to look down at Loki.
"What is the matter my son?" Odin said in a calm fatherly voice as he pulled Loki free from his cape. "What has frightened you?"
"Father …," Loki remembers being too frightened to continue, though he knew that he had not broken contact with those endlessly deep golden eyes of the gatekeeper.
Heimdall noticed this, as he noticed most things and took the few remaining steps necessary before kneeling down to Loki's height, though he still managed to tower over him. Loki recalled that no matter how hard he tried, he always felt those eyes on him as he tried to hide again.
"What is it, my prince?" Loki now knew that Heimdall was trying to sound kind, but to his younger self, the gatekeeper's voice rang out like thunder. It seemed to shake the very ground beneath his feet. It only made Loki wish to hide all that greater.
Loki remembered running from the throne room soon after that, taking refuge in the kitchen where the cooks gave him some sweets after seeing how distressed the child was. Later that night, Odin had come into Loki's chambers and asked him what had frightened him so much. Loki remembers his answer very clearly, even after the centuries that had passed since that day.
"I was afraid of the Frost Giant, Father."
It had taken all of his courage to simply utter that one sentence. Odin merely laughed at his confession. Odin only leaned closer to Loki and responded: "He is no Frost Giant, Loki. There is nothing to fear from Heimdall." Then he left Loki alone.
However, even alone in the darkness, the young Loki could still feel those hauntingly golden eyes watching him, always watching him.
A/N: A short silly chapter, but hopefully not the last. Just a quick introduction chapter. As per request of goddamnhella on Tumblr for some frostkeeper.
