I remember the moment, I remember the pain
I was only a girl, but I grew up that day
Tears were falling
I know you saw me
Hiding there in my bedroom, so alone
I was doing my best, trying to stay strong
No one to turn to
That's when I met you

What Once Was

Ch.6 Daddy Issues

Lucy sat on the bed she was borrowing, knees up and her arms wrapped around them. During the rest of the time at Lisanna's she had been silent, avoiding all conversation. She even told the others she would have lunch with them another day. She explained that she was "tired and worn out and just wanted to go back to Juvia's to relax.' She had lucked out; she was the only one at Gray and Juvia's. She's been alone for half the day and she knew any minute now everyone else would return. She sighed deeply as she stared out at the setting sun. "Why does it have to be difficult? Why won't they allow me to let it go? I didn't want to come back for this. This isn't why I'm here…but…why is he still on my mind? Could they honestly be right about it all? Dammit Lucy."

She fell back against the mattress, this time she stared at up at the ceiling. "No they are definitely wrong. I couldn't possibly still be in love with…." She refused to say his name. "Could I? Is that even possible?"

She thought back to the previous night and all that had been said in this very room. Her memory was still a little hazy and she was doing her best to remember what all happened. "I begged him to stay. Did I do that because I thought he was the old Natsu, the one who was my best friend? Or did I do that because of my old feelings? Gah! None of this makes any sense!"

She pulled at her hair and kicked her feet violently. "Why? I don't understand why!" Lucy shouted.

Knock. Knock.

She froze and sucked in her breath. "Y-yes?"

The door opened to reveal Juvia. "Lucy, are you okay?"

Lucy sat up and nodded. "I'm fine."

The bluenette stepped into the room and closed the door behind her. "Can we talk?"

Lucy was hesitant to answer due to the fact she didn't know what Juvia wanted to talk about, but she had a hunch.

"Lucy, we've been friends for how long? Juvia knows you very well. You're Juvia's best friend and I just want you to know you can depend on me. You can tell me things you can't tell anyone…even things you don't want to admit to yourself," she declared as she joined the blonde on the bed. "And with it just being Juvia here you don't have to feel so pressured. And I promise after this, Juvia will drop the subject."

"Juvia…"

"Lucy, do you remember your first week at CU?" the bride-to-be asked, staring hard at her friend.

Lucy didn't want to answer her question.

"Juvia does. You cried…every night, remember that? You didn't think Juvia could hear you, but I could. You were heartbroken Lucy. And you don't experience that kind of heartbreak unless you really truly loved someone."

"That's in the past now, Juvia. I've moved on."

"How have you moved on? How were you able to move on? Hm? You never had a chance to really let go. Until recently you didn't know what happened to Natsu-san…it was always on your mind. You might not admit it, but you always worried that something terrible had happened to him. And when Gray-sama called you to tell you the news about his encounter with Natsu-san you felt relieved…you did."

"How do you know that?" Lucy looked at her questionably.

"Because that's how Juvia would feel if something like that happened to her beloved Gray-sama."

"Yeah well, Gray would never put you through something like that. He loves you. That's the difference between my story and yours."

"Natsu-san was a young teenage boy and he also didn't know of your feelings, and Juvia is positive that if he had known, he wouldn't have left."

"And why do you think that Juvia? He went to go find his father; he would have done that no matter what. Natsu had always wanted to be by his father's side, and if I would have confessed he still would have went," Lucy argued.

"He may have. However, he would have told you that he was going to. He wouldn't have just disappeared," Juvia claimed.

"What would have made a difference? I still don't understand why he didn't say anything to me or even his family. Why would confessing make him tell me he was going to leave? I was his best friend that should have been reason enough to tell me."

"Lucy, are you listening to yourself?" Juvia asked her voice full of concern. She grabbed the blonde's hands with her own. "That's the fear of rejection talking. You're still scared to tell him how you felt or still do feel, whichever it is, and you can't be afraid anymore."

"How is telling him now going to help with anything?"

"Because you can finally let it go. It will be off your chest. Lucy, you will be free from the past."

"Ok…"

"And if it goes like I think it would. You'd realize you should have confessed your feelings a long time ago."

"Juvia…" Lucy paused, taking a deep breath before she continued. "What if I still have feelings for him?"

"Are you saying you don't know if you do or don't?"

Lucy nodded. "I'm unsure of myself right now. I'm not quite sure what I feel or if what I am feeling is just because of the past. It's really confusing."

Juvia smiled. "Juvia thinks you are just telling yourself that. Lucy's heart knows how she truly feels."

Brown eyes traveled to the floor. "Juvia, this week is suppose to be about you. I'm sorry I'm causing problems."

"Lucy, you listen to Juvia and really listen. Juvia wants you to be happy and Juvia wants you to find and experience real love like she has. Juvia sees the look in your eyes when Natsu-san is around, Juvia has always observed you when he would be mentioned. Juvia doesn't care if you and Natsu-san hook up in her house or if you just talk. The only thing Juvia cares about is that you're not hurting anymore. Honestly Juvia would be more than happy if it was her wedding that caused you to find true happiness," she stated, wrapping her arms around her friend.

Lucy hugged her back. "I don't know about 'hooking up', but…I guess I can talk to him more. And well, try to be friendlier. And maybe I'll just roll with these feelings and see where they lead me. Will that get you and everyone else off my back?"

Juvia giggled. "Hai. Hai."

"One problem though, I don't think Gray will be very excited if I were to become even friends with Natsu again. To be honest, Gray's being very protective of me," Lucy grumbled.

"Let Juvia handle Gray-sama. He'll be fine if he knows you're happy. He's just looking out for you, because it's his duty as your childhood friend."

"Please do. He's going to be your husband after all," the blonde smiled.

Juvia stepped off of the bed. "Lucy, do Juvia a favor. Don't hold back your feelings on Juvia or Gray-sama's account. If you figure out your feelings, follow them okay?"

Lucy rolled her eyes. "Yeah I know. You didn't just come into my room to lecture me for nothing. I understand, but first, I'm having that pink-haired idiot make up for everything. I've decided that it's best for everyone that I let the past go, and I that I try my best to forgive him. And who knows, maybe by the end of this trip I'll be able to."

"Maybe even by the end of the day," Juvia teased while winking.

Lucy's cheeks turned pink. "Juvia Lockser what are you implying?!"

DING DONG.

"Juvia needs to answer the door now," and with that the bluenette dismissed herself quickly.

Lucy rushed to her door. "Juvia we were not done with this conversation!" she bellowed as she watched her friend dash down the stairs. "Mou."

"Everythin' okay, Luce?"

Lucy's head jerked in the direction of the pink-haired male who had his head poking out of his bedroom. "Uh yeah…gomen. I didn't mean to disturb you, Natsu."

"Oh you didn't. I just checking out what was goin' on," he grinned at her.

They both could hear Juvia open the front door and greet the visitor. "Can Juvia help you?"

Lucy's heart started to pound against her chest as she stared at his grinning face. "Hey, Natsu do you got some time to…"

"Yes, I was wondering if I may speak to Lucy-sama? I hear she is staying with you, Miss Lockser."

Lucy's eyes widened, there were only a few people who addressed her with such title.

"Luce?" Natsu stepped out of his room, he could see the fear in her brown eyes and he knew only one man could cause such a reaction. "Are you okay?"

"Lucy! You have a visitor!" Juvia shouted from down stairs.

"Should I come with ya?" Natsu questioned, touching her shoulder.

"N-no, that's not necessary. I can tell by his voice that it's Caprico, he and I were always on good terms. I'm sure he just wants to check on me. That has to be it," Lucy spoke, but honestly she was trying to convince herself there was nothing to worry about.

"You sure?" he asked, his eyes never leaving her face.

"Yeah I'm sure. Go back to your room, and if I need you, I'll have Juvia get you," she stated as stepped down the stairs. "I'll be fine. I promise."

"If you need me, I'm here for ya," he claimed heading back to his room. "Just let me know, and I'll be there."

"T-thanks," she smiled softly. She greeted Juvia with the same smile when she reached the bottom of the staircase. She looked at the white haired man that stood in front of the door. He was wearing a black suit and sunglasses as always. "Caprico, it's been awhile. You look well."

Caprico bowed. "Lucy-sama, you're as beautiful as always."

"And to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?" she asked.

"I came to discuss serious matters with you," he answered, still bowing.

"Caprico, you don't have to do that. And okay, I have some free time to chat. Why don't we catch up?"

"You may use the study for privacy," Juvia stated. "Just let Juvia if you need anything. It was nice meeting you Caprico-san."

Lucy entered Gray and Juvia's study, taking a seat onto their couch. She knew she wasn't going to want to be standing during this conversation. "Okay, let's cut to the chase. Were you sent here?"

"I was, milady," he answered weakly.

"What does he want?" she asked bitterly.

"First off, I must ask, how are you Lucy-sama?"

"I'm doing fine Caprico. In fact, I'm perfect, I'm happy. And I am having a great time in Magnolia. Now what does my father want? Why did he send you to my friends' home?" she barked, she knew he was buying some time before telling her some bad news. "Just spit it out already."

The older man sighed. "I apologize, milady. I really wished my visit wasn't going to trouble you, but unfortunately I bring news you surely will not want to hear."

"Go on."

"Your father would like you to return home."

"Why?"

"It seems that one of his partners has learned that you are back and he has requested a meeting with you," he stated in a whisper. Lucy could tell by the way he held his head that he was ashamed to admit the reason for his visit.

"A meeting? Like an e-engagement meeting? Like a wedding proposal?!" Lucy stood up, her body filled with anger. 'This old man is out of his damn mind?!'

He just nodded.

"Are you kidding me?! That's why he sent you?!"

Another nod. "I'm afraid so."

"He doesn't care about my well being? He doesn't wish to see how his only daughter is doing? He just wants her to come home so he can marry her off to some rich old pig?!"

"I apologize, Lucy-sama, but will you please come back with me?"

"You already know the answer to that," she growled.

"Lucy-sama, I beg you to reconsider…"

"The hell I will! No! I am not going back and you can tell that damn old man to leave me the fuck alone from now on! The nerve of him!" she bellowed with clenched fists.

"Lucy-sama, if you don't agree to this marriage, it is possible that the business will tank. Your father could lose everything if this partner is not satisfied. We would like you to just attend the meeting and…"

"Caprico, I'm not going anywhere."

He took off his glasses and looked at her. "I'm sorry to trouble you, Lucy-sama."

"I don't care if he loses every dime he has, and I don't care if he disinherits me. I don't care about any of that, you make sure to inform him of that."

"I'll make sure he gets the message."

"And you tell him to leave me alone; if that's all he had to say to me after all these years…I don't want to ever see him again."

"Understood."

"Caprico…you may leave now."

He bowed once more. "Thank you for speaking with me, milady. I regret the topic of our first meeting in years, and I truly wish that we can meet again, in different circumstances. I sincerely apologize. Please take care."

Lucy's body was trembling; she couldn't believe that her father had sent someone to convince her to attend a marriage meeting. Did her father truly not care about her at all? She knew he was a cold hearted bastard, but this? How could he? She could feel her hot tears as the poured down her face.

"Lucy, is everything okay? Juvia heard…Lucy?" Juvia paused at the door as she stared at the blonde whose face was red.

"I'm sorry Juvia… I can't…I have to…" Lucy took off running. She needed to get away. She needed to run. She needed to find a place she would be able to think. She didn't want anyone else to see her like this. She was so sure that she had left Past-Lucy behind, but here she was, crying because of her father.

"Lucy…wait! Where are you going?!" Juvia shouted after her, she tried her best to chase after the upset female, but she couldn't catch her. Juvia could only watch as Lucy dashed out the front door, not taking a moment to look back or to slow down. "Lucy…"

The blue haired beauty looked up the stairs remembering a certain rose-haired male was up there. "Natsu-san…" Juvia wondered if he would know what to do in this situation. She didn't want to bother calling Gray because he would most likely be busy at work.

Natsu stared up at the ceiling letting his mind wonder off. He was trying his best not to be concerned about what was happening below him down stairs. He really wanted to eavesdrop but knew he would probably lose his head if he got caught.

If Natsu was correct the man who came to visit Lucy was someone from her father's mansion. Which meant her father must be looking for her. This never meant anything good. Ever.

He was doing his best to not think of past experiences involving Lucy's father, Jude Heartfilia. Images of Lucy crying in Natsu's arms flooded his mind. How many times did he comfort her because of that damn man? How many tears did she shed because of that heartless bastard?

His jaw clenched as he continued remembering all of her pain and all of her scars. He had always been there for her, always. Whenever she needed him he was there. Whenever she needed to get away, they ran. Whenever she needed someone to hold her, he did so. He had done it all.

And then he left.

He groaned remembering how he betrayed her. "Dammit…"

There was one person she had completely trusted, one person she depended on, and he had failed her. He had failed her big time.

"I'm going to be making this up to her till the day I die….of old age…damn…"

There was a knock on his door and he instantly hopped out of bed. He knew who was on the other side of that door. And if she was coming to his room that clearly meant she was upset. She needed him to comfort her again.

He couldn't have run fast enough to the wooden door that blocked his view of her. His hand went to the knob; he turned it, and swung the door open with great force.

"Lucy!"

He had expected to see said blonde standing right there with tears in her eyes, but he was wrong to assume. There stood Juvia who was on the verge of tears instead. This confused the rose-haired male.

"Um…Juvia? Is everything okay?"

"Natsu-san….Lucy…Lucy..."

"Hey hey, calm down. What about Lucy?"

"She took off, Juvia is so sorry she couldn't stop her! Lucy looked so upset. Juvia doesn't know what to do but to get Natsu-san."

"What do you mean she took off?!" Natsu shouted. "What did that bastard say to her?!"

"Juvia couldn't really hear, but Lucy was shouting," she answered lowering her head. "Lucy was very angry about something. Does Natsu-san think it has to do with her family? Juvia should have never let that man inside her home…"

"It's not your fault Juvia," Natsu grumbled as he rubbed the back of his head. "Well…what should we do?"

"Can Natsu-san go look for Lucy?"

"Eh…why just me?" he questioned.

"Juvia has no idea where Lucy would go in Magnolia and Juvia needs to be here when Gray-sama comes home so she can tell him what happened. Also Juvia doesn't want to leave just in case Lucy comes back before she's found."

"Maybe we should just give her some…"

"Natsu-san…Lucy's crying right now."

Natsu closed his mouth as he stared at the woman before him. Her blue eyes reminded him of Mira's, they both were saying the same thing. And he knew how his conversation with Mira went, and honestly he still wanted more time to think some things out.

"Lucy is terribly upset, who do you think she needs right now more than anyone?" she questioned. "Please Natsu-san."

"I got it," Natsu walked around, exiting his room. "I'll bring her back."

"Do you have an idea where she might be?"

Natsu didn't stop as he quickly made his exit. He had a few places he could think of, but at least two of them were no good. So that only left one place, and if she wasn't there, he wouldn't know where else to check. He wasn't aware of it, but at some point he started to run.

"Dammit Luce, I told you to come get me if you needed me, not to take off!" he growled to no one.

"Gah! Damn that man! How dare he have the nerve! UGH!" Lucy grumbled to herself, her hands clenched around the chains of the swing she sat upon.

She ran out of Juvia's front door without thinking of a final destination. She ended up just running and letting her heart take the lead. But seeing where she ended up, she had no doubt it too was remembering all of the nights she ran away crying. She was at a park, and not just any park. This was the park where she and Natsu first met.

"Well isn't this ironic…" she groaned. She kicked her feet off the ground, making herself swing. "First Natsu and now my father? What's next?" Her eyes traveled to the starry night sky.

"Then let's be friends that way you'll never be alone Luigi!" Eight year old Natsu's voice echoed through her mind. "You will never be alone as long as you have friends."

"You left me though Natsu. You out of all people left me…" she whispered to herself, she didn't cry, but her chest became tighter.

"B-but, I don't have any friends." This time the voice belonged to herself, her sad little eight year old self. Back when she felt so alone due to the fact that her mother was sick.

She thought back to her mother and her death. If Natsu hadn't been there when her mother passed, Lucy would have ended up being a completely different person. The whole reason she able to overcome it was thanks to Natsu and their friends. And she had all of her friends because of Natsu. There was no denying that she owed Natsu a lot for everything he had done for her (minus the leaving part of course).

"You have one right here!" As those words entered her mind, his front-teeth missing, contagious grin haunted her.

Lucy's cheeks were becoming warm and wet. She lifted her hand to touch the tears that were now falling from her brown eyes. "I really should have stayed away…"

"There are at least ten people that disagree with you there, Luce."

Her eyes traveled up and sure enough Natsu was leaning over her, her back to him. His hands were on the chains of the swing, he pulled lightly on them before giving her back a push. "No need to be all teary and snot faced. Aren't you supposed to be having fun at a park?"

Lucy's cheeks puffed out in annoyance. "My face isn't snotty. And what are you doing here?"

"Well someone decided to take off runnin' like The Roadrunner and not inform Mrs. Ice Princess where they were headed. So I had to come lookin'. And here ya are in the park we use to play at when we were kids!" he grinned as he continued to push her on the swing.

"Roadrunner? Mrs. Ice Princess? You think you're cute, don't you?" she growled.

"Hell no! I'm fucking sexy!" he chuckled. He instantly posed as if he were mimicking Gray, whom was indeed a model.

She forced herself to bite down on her lip to prevent her from laughing, but she couldn't stop the small blush that crossed her nose. She couldn't believe he, Natsu Dragneel, had said such a thing. He obviously was trying to cheer her up.

"Oh come on, it won't hurt to laugh ya know."

And with that she couldn't but to burst out laughing. "I can't believe you, of all people, just called yourself sexy. No you shouted that you were sexy. Haha, you Natsu Dragneel."

"Is it really that funny that I find myself attractive? I'm not a bad lookin' man."

"But it's the way you said it! You even posed!" she continued to laugh to the point where she snorted. This caused her to cover her face in embarrassment.

"Bahaha! Now that's funny!"

"SHUT UP!" She ordered through her hands. "It's your fault!"

"I know, I know," he chuckled, patting her head. "But do you feel better now?"

She stopped and looked up at him once more, smiling softly. "Yeah, I do. Thanks."

His smiled at her in return. "Good, then do you care to share why you ran away instead of coming to your friends?"

"Ugh. My damn dad. He had to nerve to send one of his lackeys to find me and ask if I would attend a marriage meeting. I haven't seen the man in years and this is all he wants from me? It's disgusting."

Natsu sighed. "I'm sorry Luce. That is pretty shitty. Want me to sneak through your old bedroom window like old times and pay him a visit? I'll gladly kick his old ass. Kami knows I've wanted to do this for years."

"As much as I would enjoy that also, no thanks."

"Are you sure you're okay?"

"I'm doing better now." She smiled at him once again. "Thank you, Natsu, for always coming to my rescue."

He ruffled her hair. "I'll always come to your rescue, Lucy."

"From here on out? You promise?" she extended her pinky out to him like she use to when she was young. She smiled at him, her brown eyes closed.

"I promise." He too smiled as his bigger pinky wrapped around her smaller one.

She stood up and stretched. "Well I think we should head back, don't you?" she looked back at him, brown eyes meeting onyx.

"Yeah, I'm sure Stripper has heard of your attempt to runaway by now and is freakin' out."

"Great, I'm going to be scolded….again," she giggled. She paused briefly. "Natsu, how did you know I would be here?"

"To be honest I didn't, I just ran to the first place that popped into my head. Lucky me to guess right on the first try! You really should try not to be so obvious next time, Luce."

"I'll try to remember that."

They walked side by side as they exited the park and headed down the dark street. Lucy couldn't help but think how Natsu's old house was not even a block away from where they were. Natsu was this close to his Grandfather.

She looked at the pink-haired male's who walked a couple feet ahead of her. "Hey Natsu."

He stopped and looked back at her. "Yeah?

"How about tomorrow we go see Gramps together?"

His grin couldn't have been wider. "Yeah, sure, that would be awesome, Luce!"

"Alright then it's settled," she stated, as she walked passed him, she nudged him with her elbow. "I think it's time for both of us to pay him a visit."

"Thank you, Lucy. I know you're doing this for me."

"I'm doing it for your Gramps…." She claimed. She turned her head back to look at him once more and smile. "Just as much as I'm doing it for you."

Seventeen year old Natsu was lying on his bed, arms underneath his head, as he stared at his ceiling. His mind was racing and he didn't understand why it wouldn't take a break. Lucy's birthday was a little over a week ago and for some reason he was bothered about something she had said during the concert they had gone to. At first he thought he was cool about it, but after a few days, he started to realize he was far from cool about the idea of Lucy getting a boyfriend. If she got a boyfriend, then that means Natsu would lose his best friend. Natsu would lose Lucy and he didn't want that.

"But I want her to be happy…" he growled to no one.

'She can be happy with just me.' His inner thoughts fought back.

"But she's at that age where girls want boyfriends. She won't just want friends anymore. She's going to want more than what I have to offer."

'I can offer Lucy the kind of happiness that any other guy could offer her. I'm more than enough.' His thoughts argued.

"This is Lucy that I'm talking about…my best friend…I can't just…"

'I just can't what?' he asked himself.

"What the hell am I thinkin'?!"

There was a knock on his bedroom door.

"Natsu-nii, are you okay?" it was Wendy who was asking.

"Yeah I'm fine. No need to worry, Wendy."

He sat up, swinging his feet over the edge of his bed. "Natsu, what is wrong with you? You can't go there. You're startin' to sound like Ji-chan."

Tap. Tap

Natsu's attention was drawn to his window. And there just outside of it, trying to desperately stay balanced on the tree in his front yard was Lucy Heartfilia. "Natsu, hurry and open up will you? I'm going to fall."

He shook his head as he went to his window and opened it. "Well hey there, Luce. May I ask why you aren't using the front door?"

"Thought I would take a page out of the 'How to Sneak in Like Natsu Dragneel' handbook. Now would you mind helping me in?"

"Funny," he grumbled as he grabbed her hand and pulled her safely into his room. "Now what brings you here? It's almost dark outside; your dad is goin' to kill you."

"Who cares about that? I came over because wanted to see you."

"You'll see me tomorrow in class."

"But I missed you."

Her brown eyes stared hard into his dark onyx ones. He had to force himself to look away and to walk back towards his bed. "But you'll see me in the morning."

"Natsu, is something wrong? I feel like you've been avoiding me."

"Nothin' is wrong Luce."

"But you've been avoiding me?"

"I didn't say that."He growled as he sat on his bed.

"You didn't deny it either."

Once again their eyes met. "What do you want me to say, Luce?"

"You could tell me what's wrong for starters?" she joined him on his mattress.

"I don't know what's wrong okay? I just feel different, that's all."

"Different? Is it a boy-changing thing?" she blushed thinking of the certain topics this conversation could lead to.

"I guess you could say that."

"So it's something that would be easier to discuss with a guy rather than me right?"

"I guess, Luce." He sighed.

"Oh…" she whispered.

Natsu looked over at her and noticed how red her cheeks were. "Why is your face so red?"

"Well I just never thought that you of all people would go through such changes? To think my best friend is a pervert."

"Wait…what? Who's a pervert?" he questioned.

"Are you like, you know, having 'dreams'? This is so awkward! This is a talk you should have with Gray! Even Erza would be better than me. I can't…"

"Lucy! What the hell are you talkin' about?!"

"I'm talking about your 'changes'. You know, because you're feeling 'different'."

"I didn't mean that kind of different!"It was his turn to blush slightly. "I can't believe you thought I meant 'that'. And you say I'm the pervert? You're the pervert." He chuckled.

Lucy blushed more. "W-well…I mean…you're that age…"

"I've been 'that age' for awhile, Luce."

"Gah! Drop this topic now!"

He snickered. "You're hilarious."

"I'm embarrassed."

"No need to be embarrassed," he patted her back. "But I'm curious now…do you have those kinds of 'dreams', Luce?" His laughter wouldn't cease.

SMACK.

Her strong hand connected with his innocent cheek. "Natsu Dragneel don't you dear imply such things!"

He covered the left side of his face. "Sorry, Luce, I just had to. You asked for it. Plus you look super cute when you're embarrassed."

Now her face was the color of a tomato. "C-cute? What has gotten into you?!"

He looked at her confused. "Um…nothin'? What's gotten into you?"

"N-nothing!"

"Can restart this whole conversation? I'm totally lost now."

She took a deep breath and then nodded. "Sure. I came over here for a reason after all."

"So you didn't just miss me?"

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Will you just shut up for a second?"

"Okay."

The grin he gave her reminding her of a child, adorable and innocent. His smile was one of the reasons she had fallen in love with him. And her heart heavy with what she was about to say. "Hey Natsu. I really need to tell you something."
