Six!

Chapter Thirty Two- Finale

Abby approached the ADD where Jess stood watching Lester in his office.

"You OK, Jess?" she asked, turning in the direction where Jess was watching.

"They've been at it for fifteen minutes now!" Jess stated in response, her eyes still focused on the office.

Abby turned to look and saw Lester and Ange talking animatedly. Lester was pacing up and down- one moment leaning over his desk talking to Ange, the next over by the filing cabinets, arms waving dramatically. Ange had stopped speaking and sat with her hands in her lap, looking as if she was a student facing the headmaster.

Lester suddenly stood still, his chest heaved as if in a huge sigh, and he slowly walked back to Ange. He sat down next to her, and took her hands in his.

Jess felt suddenly uncomfortable and glanced quickly at Abby, but couldn't help looking back to see what was happening. Ange had leant in and her face was now hidden against Lester's chest and her shoulders shook as if she was crying. Lester looked sad and sat still, gently patting her back.

Jess wiped away a tear that had quietly fallen from her eyes at the little scene. She realised this must be his farewell to Ange and her kind heart broke for them both.

Both Jess and Abby turned away, both feeling as if they were intruding on a private moment. Other members of both the ARC and the Canadians drifted in and out as they sorted out their equipment, bringing it to the Hub ready to take it back with them.

"We seem to have a fair bit to take back with us!" Mac pondered as he looked at the pile of stuff amassed in a heap beside the ADD.

"We'll manage." Evan remarked "We'll each have a backpack and Connor said he can help with transport for the rest."

"Connor?" Becker frowned. "What's he up to?"

Abby shot Becker a look, and he stared innocently back at her. Really, those two and their rivalry! But she knew Becker cared deeply about Connor really.

Suddenly Connor made his entrance. The teams began to giggle as he trundled along. He looked slightly affronted at all the mirth directed at him as he pushed the shopping trolley he'd obtained from the local supermarket in front of him and parked it beside the ADD next to the equipment.

"What!" he said. "Look, this will hold everything- I've even got one without wonky wheels, which wasn't easy, I can tell you!"

"Very professional, Connor!" Abby remarked.

"May not be your... actual high tech vehicle, but it's all I could find!" Connor stated.

"It's very... inventive, Connor. I'm sure it'll do the job just fine. And it won't stand out when we get back- well maybe a bit because of the decent wheels- but thank you!" Evan said, hiding his smile.

Connor smirked at Abby as if to say 'see!' and began to put the gear into the trolley with Evan's help.

Lester and Ange had joined the group by this time, Ange now wearing her dark glasses to hide her tear stained face. She'd known that Lester wanted to get back with his wife really, but had hoped he'd change his mind once he'd spoken with her. But it wasn't to be. She'd obviously wanted him back too, and so all Ange could hold onto were fond memories of the good times here, and maybe hope for a friendship with Lester in the future.

Lester raised his eyebrows at the shopping trolley. "What the... No, don't tell me- I don't think I want to know!"

He shook his head as he went to stand beside Jess, who offered him a sympathetic look, which he returned with a small smile and a nod.

Leeds was horrified to find that once again Becker was by his side, too close for comfort. He moved away a little, but Becker closed any gap he left each time. His hand automatically went to his breast pocket, and Becker noticed the involuntary action, raising his eyebrows and making Leeds even more nervous than before.

"Right, well- we'd best get going then!" Evan announced as the Six began shaking hands, hugging and saying goodbye to the ARC team. As Leeds shook Emily's hand warmly, he could still feel Becker's intimidating presence watching him.

They all travelled to the gym where the anomaly was still sparkling in its tightly closed little ball at the back, guarded by two of Becker's team, but mostly ignored by those using the equipment in the gym itself.

The Six took their place in front of the anomaly as Connor quickly prepared his opening device. He looked around at them when he was set up.

"Ready?" he asked.

Evan, holding onto Dylan's hand, nodded. Connor typed the command on the keyboard, and the anomaly sprang back into life, twinkling all its glory, at teams.

"Thank you all, for your help, friendship and hospitality." Evan said, as he prepared to step through.

Suddenly there was an almighty roar, scattering the people surrounding the anomaly, and the head of a raptor appeared through the shards, roared and disappeared from sight. As everyone looked at each other, wondering what they should do, the creature suddenly leapt through the anomaly straight towards Leeds. Fortunately Becker was his shadow, as had become his habit, and threw himself at Leeds, knocking him out of the way.

Matt and Abby had drawn their EMD's and fired together at the creature, and with an ear- piercing screech, it fell heavily to the ground.

Matt moved carefully to the anomaly and peered through. "All clear, everyone. Best if you make a move now."

"Er... Guys!" Toby cried urgently. "I made an error- the anomaly's about to close any moment now!"

"Look!" Emily cried as the anomaly began to pulsate and throb.

"Come on! Everyone through- now!" Evan cried.

Quickly and with calls of 'goodbye' and 'thanks' the Canadian team began to step through the anomaly. Leeds was the last one, but just before he stepped through, he turned to face Becker who was standing in his usual position against a wall with his arms folded.

Leeds reached into his breast pocket, and smirked. His expression suddenly turned to horror as he patted his empty pocket. No! Where was the memory stick! It wasn't there! He peered inside the pocket, then patted his other pockets in panic. He suddenly stopped as his gaze met Becker's.

Becker smiled a full toothy smile that was devoid of humour, as he slowly lifted up his arm, exposing the item he held in his hand. It was the memory stick! He'd managed to get it from Leeds as he'd rugby tackled him to the ground to escape the raptor.

"No!" Leeds cried, reaching out his hand to grab it.

Suddenly, Evan's face appeared back through the weak shards, spotted Leeds and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck.

"Leeds! Come on, now!" he cried before hauling the man through just in time before the anomaly finally winked out and disappeared.

"Do you think they're OK?" Connor said worriedly.

"Yep." Matt answered. "They were just in time! What was that all about, Becker?"

"Oh nothing. Just a gift Leeds wanted me to give Connor. Here you go." he finished as he gave the uploaded data to Connor.

"You might want to destroy that." he whispered to Connor. "Don't want it to get into the hands of the wrong people."

Connor nodded, looking at the little thing in his hands. This could have been disastrous, he thought.

"Thanks, mate!" he said to Becker. "I owe you one!"

Becker clapped Connor on the shoulder as Lester announced "Well come on... come on... shoo... shoo- haven't any of you got work to do?"

As they all began to disperse, and Lester took one last sad look at where the anomaly had been, Jess moved to him and whispered softly.

"Are you alright?"

Lester looked at her for a silent moment before replying. "Yes Jess. Thank you. I am... I will be fine! My wife and I are planning a holiday, you know- together!"

"I'm glad." Jess said simply, and moved away to take her usual spot at the ADD.

It had been fun to meet the Canadian team, but now things could get back to normal. She looked at Lester again, and watched as he went back to his office and picked up his phone. He smiled as he spoke into the receiver. She smiled too- he must be talking to his wife- he looked so happy!

Her eyes travelled over the room- Abby and Connor were making their way to his lab, arm in arm, Connor leaning over to kiss her adoringly as they went. Matt and Emily were talking quietly together as they too left the room, oblivious to everyone else and clearly in love.

Then there was Becker. Still in his favourite place by the wall, watching her. As their eyes met, she forgot all about the others, and her breath caught in her throat as he slowly approached her.

"OK, Jess?" he said, stroking her cheek.

"Oh yes, more than OK..."

His lips found hers and they kissed in full view of anyone that was watching. Becker's men smirked as they passed by, but Becker didn't notice, and they were too in awe of the Captain to say anything.

As they drew apart, Jess sighed contentedly. She was sorry her new friends had gone, but now she had time to concentrate on the one person she wanted to get to know better. The love of her life! She couldn't wait!...
