The Sparia sleepover will be divided in 3 parts. One for each day. This is the first part. I want to thank Abi117 and everyone for your lovely reviews. Also to handball for urging me to update. I'm really glad you're liking the story.
FRIDAY
Spencer couldn't believe it. She didn't know if this meant she had really good luck or that she was cursed. She only knew that it was Aria the one standing in front of her, holding the door open to the house she planned on staying at all weekend. She blinked several times wondering if she had accidentally knocked on the wrong house. Maybe this was Aria's home and she had unexplainably ended there. But no, there was little Rebecca yelling her name and throwing herself into her arms, so this must be the house.
She cleared her throat awkwardly once she had the little girl safely in her arms.
"I'm guessing you're the 'babysitter'." She said trying to break the sudden awkward silence.
"And I'm guessing you're the 'best friend'." Aria responded jokingly.
Spencer smiled feeling some of the tension fade. She didn't know what the other woman's reaction would be to seeing her again. I hope she doesn't think I'm stalking her.
"Small world, huh." Aria voiced her thoughts. "I swear I'm not stalking you or something. This must be-" she stopped herself but they had both thought the same thing: Fate. "You should probably come in."
The shorter woman moved aside so she could walk in. They both walked to living room and sat, Spencer safely depositing Rebecca beside her.
"Spenceeeeer! I'm so happy you're here!" The tiny brunette exclaimed, throwing her arms around her neck and giving her a loud smacking kiss on the cheek. "We're gonna have so much fun!"
She chuckled nervously gauging Aria's reaction who was staring at them with a huge smile on her face. She got up, feeling her cheeks reddening. For some unexplainable reason she felt really nervous. She cleared her throat avoiding the younger woman's gaze.
"I'm getting something to drink. Do you want anything?"
"Just water."
Spencer couldn't get out of there fast enough. She walked into the kitchen, walked to the fridge and clutched the handle tightly. She took a deep breath running her free hand through her hair. Get it together, Hastings.
She suddenly felt a gentle tap on her arm that almost sent her flying through the roof. She looked around, her heart hammering in her chest and she spotted Rebecca looking at her with her big blue eyes.
"Oh, it's just you." She said, feeling relieved.
"I'm thirsty." The girl said pouting.
"Okay, do you want some water?"
"No!" Rebecca exclaimed jumping up and down. "I want milk!"
"All right. Milk coming right up."
As she got the milk out Rebecca kept jumping up and down exclaiming "Milk! Milk! Milk!" over and over again. As soon as she handed her the beverage the little girl went out the kitchen running. Spencer could hear her talking to Aria in the living room saying something like: "Mommy, told me milk will make me grow tall and strong just like her."
She pictured Aria's pretty face smiling at the comment, and she couldn't help smiling herself. She had the drinks ready and was about to head out but suddenly decided to make some snacks.
She looked around the kitchen finding nothing but healthy, organic, locally-grown food. She rummaged deeply into the cupboards not finding anything junky. She finally found a pack of popcorn buried under tons of vegan food, and put it in the microwave. It was the natural kind, it didn't even have butter or salt. She looked at the popcorn disapprovingly reminding herself to chastise Hanna when she got back for feeding her kid this healthy crap.
She poured the popcorn into a bowl making a mental note to buy some real stuff at the grocery store later. She took the drinks and, trying to balance the popcorn bowl as well, made her way to the living room. As soon as Aria saw her she got up and went to help her.
When she took the popcorn bowl their hands brushed and Spencer had use to use all her self-control not to shiver. They settled on the couch as Rebecca brought over from her room a ton of Legos and began to build a castle. Spencer felt a bit nervous when Aria sat right beside her. She fiddled with her hands nervously thinking of something to say. Aria must have sensed something was off because she turned to look at her curiously.
"Are you all right?" the younger woman asked.
"Yes. I'm just tired. It's been a long week." She answered rubbing her eyes.
"Do you like being a teacher?" Aria asked out of the blue.
Spencer turned to look at her taken by surprise.
"I mean," the smaller brunette said looking away. "do you ever wish you were something else?"
She thought about it. She had never asked herself that question before.
"Well, my parents were always pushing me to study law just like them. The only thing I was sure of back then was the fact that I didn't want to be a lawyer." She closed her eyes taking a deep breath. "I guess I really never put much thought into what I wanted to be. I only knew what I didn't want to be." She opened her eyes and found Aria staring at her intently. She knew perfectly well she hadn't answered the younger woman's question so she made an effort to answer as honestly as she could. "I do enjoy being a teacher. Being in front of a class gives me a rush that can only be described as "powerful". I've always been a somewhat good orator and I very much enjoy sharing knowledge with other people."
"Do you consider yourself an enlightener?"
She chuckled shaking her head. "Do you really think I'm that self-centered?"
Aria just looked at her with a glint in her eyes. "A guide then?"
She shook her head yet again. "What makes you think I consider myself anything at all?"
Now it was Aria's turn to frown in thought. "It's the way you carry yourself. You always act so confident, so…certain. Yet you still leave room for us to question you, to drill you until your allusion of certainty crumbles. You let us throw argument after argument against you, and yet at the end you always smile like you know something we don't. Like, even though we crushed your idea to the ground you still won in the end. As if you were hiding some big truth that only you know, but you want us to know it too so you guide us towards it. I always have a feeling that you're keeping something to yourself although I can't ever figure out what it is. It's in your eyes sometimes, a strange glint. But, whenever I try to interpret it I blink and it's gone like it was never there."
Spencer was speechless for a moment. Aria was onto her. She always knew the younger woman had a beautiful and inquisitive mind but she never expected to have its attention towards herself. The woman sitting next to her knew she was keeping a secret. It horrified her, because she felt she had let her guard down. She thought she was doing an excellent job keeping her feelings hidden but there was a crack in her armor and it had been pierced by none other than the object of her affections.
"I'm sorry." Aria said suddenly blushing. "I didn't mean to be disrespectful." And Spencer suddenly realized she had been staring at her with a look of disgust imprinted on her features.
She quickly adopted an apologetic look instead. "You weren't disrespectful, Aria. You just… took me by surprise." She berated herself for letting her guard down. She was only expressing the disgust she felt at herself.
The damage was already done, though. The air suddenly became suffocating, and the silence that followed awkward. Spencer could still not shake off the feeling that the other woman knew and, as much as she wanted to say something, fear had her rooted to her spot.
Aria stood up suddenly, looking anywhere but at her teacher. "I-I should go."
She just sat there staring as the younger woman picked up her things and left. She wanted to tell her to stay and at the same time wanted as much space between them as possible. So she just watched her leave with a conflicted feeling, wanting to apologize and not knowing what she wanted to apologize for.
After a while Rebecca looked up triumphantly showing Spencer her finished construction which she called 'castle'. She didn't even inquire about Aria's disappearance which Spencer found incredibly odd since she felt like something was missing. The house suddenly felt empty, and she almost hated the younger woman for it. Hanna's house was her sanctuary, the place where she truly felt at peace, and now it was tainted by Aria's presence. She could still smell her perfume lingering in the air, and almost feel the warmth she had left behind.
She needed to get out of there, so she took Rebecca out to the park. As she sat in a bench watching the little girl play she felt at peace. It was a beautiful afternoon, and as the sun was going down it was making the sky glow orange. It helped clear her thoughts.
It had started to get chilly, and the sun was already down when she finally got up to tell Rebecca it was time to go. The little girl pouted, and seemed upset but after promising they would watch a movie when they got home her face lit up again.
Back at Hanna's, Spencer made some hot chocolate and settled with the younger girl on the couch to watch a movie. The little brunette had chosen it, and was very excited about it. Spencer watched her amused, sure that Rebecca had seen it a dozen times before but was still as excited as if it were the first time.
As the movie began, so did the little brunette's endless chatter. She explained the characters' bios and roles in the movie as soon as they appeared. That was soon followed by childish commentary like "Oh! Check out what happens next!"; "I just looooove him!"; "I want a dress like that; "He turns bad in the end", and so on.
Halfway through the movie she abruptly fell silent and snuggled closer to Spencer. The woman's heart melted at the gesture and she put an arm around the small girl. Not even a half hour later, Rebecca was asleep.
Spencer waited patiently until the movie ended before scooping the little brunette up in her arms and taking her to her room. She tucked her in, and before she could stop herself gave her a goodnight kiss on the forehead.
She looked at the time and realized it was only 10 o'clock so she decided to grade some of the assignments she had received that day. She needed the distraction. It wasn't such a hard task, and she was almost enjoying herself doing it when she came across her essay. She cursed under her breath as she remembered the events of the past few hours. She took a deep breath, steeling herself. You're a big woman, just grade the damn essay.
With another deep breath she began reading it. She had asked her students to write a short story imitating the style of one of the authors they had studied in class. As she read Aria's piece she immediately recognized a Brontë sisters' kind of style. Upon close inspection she further defined into a Charlotte Brontë style. It was written in first person; a woman speaking about her love. She seemed to have a strong sense of will, and didn't seem to care about conventions, although she could detect a flawless moral compass. Oh yes, she could definitely picture the scene in Jane Eyre.
A strange feeling settled in the pit of her stomach as she finished reading it. She had the distinct impression Aria had written this for a girl. It was weird because she didn't write it literally but Spencer thought she implied it strongly. Then again it could be her own interpretation. She shook her head trying to clear her thoughts. Some part of her desperately wanted it to be true. She didn't know why, it wouldn't change anything. She would still be her student. But she couldn't shake off the thrill of it. The thought that she might actually have a chance with her made her heart beat madly in her chest.
She shook her head again more forcefully, willing herself to see things from an objective point of view. Switching herself to teacher mode she wrote some annotations on Aria's work complaining about her use of modern words and expressions while trying to imitate a 17th century author, and her bad habit of using the same word various times. She hated herself for it. Aria's short story was perfect in every way. Spencer could tell she had put a lot of thought into it. There were no grammar mistakes whatsoever, so she must've revised it several times.
It wasn't just the way it was written, it was also the content of it. It was about a woman talking about the love of her life, but there was a sad tinge to it. It was as if she was hopelessly in love but she wasn't with that other person. It was almost as if she never actually had been with her love, but she loved them nonetheless. It was beautiful, and Spencer reread it for the third time still feeling that it wasn't written for a male. It couldn't be; she didn't want it to be.
She finally put it down deciding that it was enough for the night. She got up and shoved all of the papers into her portfolio. She ran a hand through her face, exhaustion finally creeping in. She grabbed her car keys and went outside to grab what she had packed for the weekend. Going upstairs, she peeked into Rebecca's room and smiled when she spotted her sleeping peacefully. She kept walking and went into the guest room. She laid her things down, and yawned while stretching her arms. Walking to bathroom she got changed, and did her nighttime routine.
She was just settling into bed when she heard a strange noise downstairs. Frowning she threw the covers off, and sat up. She looked at the watch on the nightstand which told her it was 1:03 A.M. She stood still for a moment wondering if she had imagined it. After a minute she began to slide back into bed when she heard it again. It sounded like someone stumbling and moving stuff around downstairs. She got up, feeling slightly nervous. She took a deep breath trying to reason. Perhaps Rebecca had woken up.
She got out of the guest room and padded down the hall to the girl's room. Her anxiety only increased when she saw the brunette in the same position she was in when she last checked on her. Taking another deep breath she walked slowly towards the stairs. She tried looking over the rail to see if someone was down there but saw only darkness. She considered calling Hanna but really there was nothing the blonde could do being in Philly. She looked around trying to come up with a possible weapon but she didn't find anything sharp enough. She cursed under her breath.
She just stood there at the foot of the stairs straining her eyes trying to see. She suddenly heard the living room table move, and a pained grunt.
"Shit! Stupid table!"
Spencer immediately breathed a sigh of relief. She would recognize that voice anywhere. She walked a few steps and turned on the hall lights. The light was enough to give the living room downstairs a soft glow, and there she was. Aria wincing, and rubbing her ankle.
"Aria?"
The younger woman immediately turned at the mention of her name with a deer in the headlights expression on her face.
Spencer went down the stairs, and stood in front of a very surprised Aria.
"What are you doing here at this time?" she asked confused.
Aria seemed to snap out of her trance, and blinked several times. Her eyes began to wander lower as she blatantly checked Spencer out. The older woman felt her cheeks redden. She was being looked at like something very appealing, something edible. She had never seen her student wear the hungry expression she was looking at her with right now. She gulped.
Suddenly, Aria's gaze snapped back up at her face, and she smiled seductively.
"I was at a party in the neighborhood, and decided to pay a little visit."
Spencer's brow furrowed in confusion. A party? And then it dawned on her. She looked at Aria, really looked at her. She was wearing a tight purple dress. A very tight purple dress. Okay, so she was at a party. That still didn't explain what she was doing there.
As if on cue, Aria took three steps towards her staggering slightly. "I just had to see you."
She smelled it, then. Alcohol. Aria was completely intoxicated. Spencer almost sighed in relief. It all made so much sense now.
"Have you been drinking, Ar?" she couldn't stop the nickname from escaping her lips. She chastised herself although she was sure her student hadn't noticed, or if she had she wouldn't remember it tomorrow.
"Maybe. It's none of your business." She responded defensively wagging her right index finger in her face. "Unless you want it to be." Yes, definitely drunk.
"Let's get you upstairs, okay?" She couldn't possibly let Aria get home in that state. She wasn't even sure she would make it home before passing out somewhere.
"Wow. You don't do foreplay at all, do you?"
Spencer ignored that last comment, and grabbed Aria's arm, steering her towards the stairs. The younger brunette stumbled, and Spencer quickly wrapped her arm around her waist. They began their ascent, and Aria didn't stop babbling all the way to the guest to room. She kept talking nonsense about the party and how "stupid Emily was probably hooking up with Paige", seeing as she was apparently nowhere to be found.
She sat her down on the bed, wondering what she could do about this all. She looked at her again sitting beside her. The younger woman had fallen silent, and was staring at her with adoration on her face. Spencer felt a pull on her stomach.
"You look beautiful." Aria breathed, and Spencer's breath hitched. "You always look beautiful. I can't ever stop staring at you in class."
Okay, this was getting out of hand. Spencer laughed nervously, running a hand through her hair. "Okay, I'll get you something you can sleep in."
She quickly got up and walked across the room feeling Aria's eyes on her. She rummaged through her things looking for anything she could lend her. She started when she felt a hand on her back. She quickly turned around, finding Aria smiling down at her.
"Why did you run away from me? Why do you always run away from me?" Spencer had no idea how to answer her questions. She just stared dumbly at her.
"You're very confusing, Spencer. You know that? So confusing." Aria took a step closer, backing her into a wall. Spencer felt awfully helpless. "What do you want from me?"
"W-what do you mean?" she stuttered nervously, berating herself for it. She's the one drunk. You're supposed to be the one in control not the other way around.
"I said: What do you want from me, Spencer Hastings?" Aria was so close, Spencer could feel her warm breath on her face. It smelled like alcohol, and something sweet. She gulped again as she noticed the younger brunettes gaze was fixated on her lips.
"What do you want, Spencer?" she repeated softly. "Why are you so confusing? Why do you draw me in only to push me away? Do you want to be my friend? Because I most certainly don't want to be your friend."
Spencer was speechless. She could only watch Aria with wide eyes as the younger woman stared at her lips as if they were the most interesting thing in the world. And suddenly, she was gone.
Spencer shivered as she felt cold air hit her, and she instantly missed the warmth of Aria's body. She walked over to her sitting on the bed. She sat beside her again, her heart beating madly in her chest. What the hell was that? Aria was looking down at her feet with a sad expression.
"We need to get you dressed for bed." She tried gently.
Aria just nodded, still not looking at her. Spencer got up with a sigh, picking an oversized shirt and some pajama pants. When she turned around, her student was already laying down on the bed, and was almost asleep.
"Oh, no. Aria, sit up you need to get changed." She said rushing towards her.
The younger brunette just grumbled and shook her head.
"Come on, Ar."
"I don't wanna." She just mumbled half asleep.
Sighing exasperatedly, Spencer pulled her up forcefully. Aria grumbled but offered no resistance. Seeing no other way out of it, she unzipped the shorter brunette's dress herself. She tried not to stare as she slid her garment off, leaving her in nothing but underwear. Spencer was afraid she would taunt her for what she was doing but Aria just blinked sleepily during the whole process. She quickly redressed her, and then proceeded to get her properly settled.
"Where will you sleep?" Aria asked groggily.
"On the floor, probably. You can take the bed."
Before she could get up, Aria grabbed her arm.
"Stay."
Spencer sighed wearily.
"Please. I won't try anything, I promise." The younger woman looked at her with a hopeful expression.
"Fine." Spencer relented, against her better judgement. I'll just stay here until she falls asleep, and then I'll transfer to another room. Aria moved over to give her some space and Spencer settled, quite comfortably she might add.
Silence ensued, and Spencer was almost sure Aria had fallen asleep when she spoke. "You're an interesting woman, Spencer." She just remained silent, sure the younger woman was not done speaking.
"You seem to keep a lot of secrets. I always wonder was goes on in that mind of yours. You always look so poised, and overall perfect. But there are times when you think no one is looking, and it's like you let you guard down. You adopt a look of immense suffering in your face. It's truly heartbreaking. I always wonder if I've imagined it because you catch yourself, and wipe it off immediately. But then I see that look on your face again, and I can only wonder what it means. I can only wonder what kind of burden you're carrying…"
Spencer waited holding her breath. When nothing else came out of Aria's mouth she peeked over and found her profoundly asleep. She turned over in the bed, her mind reeling. She was sure of something: Aria's mind was incredibly perceptive, she had gained insight only her closest friend had ever been granted access to. And this thought absolutely terrified her.
So there it is folks. R&R and let me know what you think. Until next time
