[2019: I actually didn't do anything to the context of this chapter. I only added a small note at the end].
Project: New Generation - After years of growing up in their shadow, the kids of The Avengers are ready to face the world to save it from growing threats and sometimes even themselves.
Project: New Generation - Sneak Peek #2
"Council, it's time to start Project: New Generation."
Angela, in her fighting stance, lowers her guns as her enemies fall at her feet. When all is calm again, she holsters her guns and steps over the bodies of her victims. She sees Apollo standing to the side with his eyes wide open in shock.
"You - " he starts before cutting himself off " - this has happened to you before?"
Angela blows a strand of hair out of her face that's damp from sweat. "I'm pretty good at not getting shot."
Apollo puts a hand on her shoulder. "You are tougher than I remember."
"That's what SHIELD does to you."
"What exactly has happened to make you like this, Angela?"
Angela takes a breath. "I have been shot at, blown up, dropped out of planes, beaten up, attacked with knives, electrocuted, hit by every kind of moving vehicles on the planet - and that was during extremely realistic training simulations. Any other questions?"
Apollo is speechless. Angela nods her head, confirming her statements.
"Your power is quite impressive," Apollo starts. Angela smiles at that compliment. "That is, for a mortal."
Her smile vanishes
"You do not know whether they're ready or not. You cannot just start an initiative like this on your own."
Iqadi wakes up on the island after what feels like an hour of lying unconscious in wet sand. She tests her hands by making fists in the sand and letting them relax. She turns her head slowly, breathing in the salty air. Iqadi attempts to stand up slowly, using her trembling arms as the breeze blows against her.
Iqadi falls back on her chest and huffs. After a second attempt, she finally manages to stand on her aching legs. Iqadi looks around and sees the ocean washing up over her feet and scattered stones. She begins walking into the forest on the beach in order to find her way out.
She shivers, wrapping her arms around herself in order to keep warm. Her first plan is to call out to someone but her throat is scratchy and she knows that she's alone. Iqadi looks down and sees a shadow at her feet, growing behind her.
Iqadi turns around and holds out her hands, making them into claws.
"Your team has a couple of wildcards. Only certain members will be willing to give out their assets to their full extent."
When Merida sees James running up to her, she decks him across the face once she's close enough.
"Ow!" James exclaims, holding his cheek. "What the hell, Merida?! I saved your damn life!"
"I saved my own life!" She yells back.
"If it weren't for me, we would've never found you!"
Merida stares at James as he rubs the spot where she hit him. She didn't use all her strength so his jaw was still in one piece. Feeling ungrateful and guilty, she rolls her eyes and crosses her arms. She looks down at her boots and mumbles something inaudible.
"What was that?" James asks with a grin approaching his face. "Did Merida Barton just thank me? Why don't you give me a hug?"
He opens his arms for her and Merida sighs, annoyed.
"Offer a hug one more time and I will knock you out and drag you to the quinjet on my back."
"This isn't just another football match; some of your teammates will disagree on the strategies and orders you will give. There is more pressure on the leader even if he isn't the one firing the shots."
Emily sprints through the streets, opposite the direction of everyone else. She pauses when she sees the green beast, not needing to out her hand directly on her chest to feel her pounding heart. Emily takes a few steps before the Hulk notices her presence. It growls at her.
"Hey, Big Guy," Emily states. "It's me, Emily."
The monster stares at her, full of rage. She has to pick her words carefully and delicately.
"You're not yourself. Believe me, I can help you."
The Hulk roars, picking up a nearby car. Emily stands still, looking at it and trying not to show her fear. She inhales in and out and the Hulk glares down at her.
"C'mon, Daniel..." Emily whispers, barely audible through the monster's outburst.
"But be warned, your bonds with these people will never be the same. You're no longer in high school, but the battlefield. Do you understand?"
The landing is rough.
Xavier gets up and begins walking slowly until he hears a noise and stops. Something is coming his way so he begins to run in the other direction to avoid whatever it could be at all costs. Xavier turns his head to see if there's anything following him and he crashes. Xavier rolls on the ground, putting his grip on his gun and points it out. In response, he sees a hand shimmering magic stretched out towards him.
The woman Xavier sees immediately makes him lower his weapon. She lowers her hand and they both stand up, not losing eye contact with each other.
"Britney?" Xavier questions.
Neither one of them is able to react.
"I do..."
[If you want an extended sneak peek, check out the final chapter of Britney's story. But why bother doing that when you can just go straight to the story?] [2019: Or you could go read SHIELD Academy to follow the chronology of this series].
[Again, I just want to give one last thank you to everyone :)]
