Epilogue
"Ivy, come on sweetie. You could do it," Regina said softly, trying to get her now 11 month old daughter to take her first steps. She was in the living room alone and Ivy was standing by the coffee table, holding on to stay up. Regina was kneeling a few feet away, trying to coax her to come to her.
"Mama!" Ivy shrieked, pointing at Regina. She wanted her mother to come pick her up but Regina remained where she was.
"Yes, come to mama," she encouraged her but Ivy wouldn't budge. Instead she got down on her knees and crawled to her. Regina sighed, picking her up and standing just as Cora came into the room.
"Don't worry sweetie. She'll be walking soon enough and when she does it'll only be a matter of time before she's running all over the place. Enjoy it while you can," she said with an amused affectionate smirk as she remembered a baby Regina running all over the place and keeping her parents on their toes. A lot of memories that she had once frowned upon, she now found herself laughing at some of them. Regina really was a troublemaker at this age and she could only hope Ivy would be much more mellow once she started walking.
For the past several months Regina and Cora's relationship was slowly improving. Cora even helped with Emma's magic lessons with the careful supervision of Regina and Snow and the blonde sheriff was getting better each day. There were still times where Regina would close herself off to her mother and didn't want to talk to her or even be around her. Sometimes the sadness and pain of the past was just too much to bare but then her family would remind her why she was trying to reconcile with Cora. They were her support throughout all of the rough moments these past months had brought.
"Oh mother, I don't want to hear another story from my youth. I get it I was a terror," she said impatiently and Cora chuckled in amusement before kissing her daughter's cheek.
"You weren't a terror my love, you were rambunctious."
"You're not helping," she grumbled, just thinking about the mischief Ivy would soon get into. She was still crawling and was already getting into everything.
"Just wait until she hits two."
"I know mother, Henry wasn't an angel either at that age."
"I'm just saying, honey. I mean once you wandered into the forest by yourself."
"What? I could have gotten hurt or devoured by some beast," she said, appalled by the idea of a two year old her wandering into a dangerous forest by herself.
"Oh please, Regina. I wouldn't have let that happen. You could be such a drama queen sometimes," Cora said with a wave of her hand as if it were no big deal. "Now come on, were supposed to meet everyone at the diner."
Everyone met up at Granny's diner for lunch and as they waited for Snow and David to arrive everyone patiently waited at a table and talked about random things such as their day, school, and work. Ivy had gotten restless so Regina got up and walked her around the diner. She held onto her hands, holding her while she moved her little legs to walk with the help of her mother.
Overtime the town had grown to love Ivy despite the reason that she could one day wield magic if she chose to. As they walked passed different customers, Ivy would get smiles and loving words on how big she's gotten or how beautiful she is. It wasn't until they were on their second lap did a Snow and David finally walk in.
"Sno!" Ivy called out excitedly and giggled when Snow approached them and picked Ivy up.
"Hello Ivy," she cooed enthusiastically at the little girl, bouncing her and making her laugh. Regina however noticed something different about her stepdaughter and it hit her like a ton of bricks when David lovingly put his arm around his wife.
They had been trying, that she knew of.
"Snow," she whispered in astonishment. "You're glowing."
At those words Snow put her finger to her lips, signaling her to keep quiet and silently took her hand and led her to the table everyone was sitting at. It was so hard to keep quiet, to keep the joy from bursting out. Even after they ordered their food Regina couldn't help the subtle glances at Snow who still had Ivy in her arms. It was hard to keep herself put but she knew she needed to respect Snow's wishes on keeping silent just a little longer.
When everyone was halfway through lunch and Regina was going absolutely crazy suppressing her feelings at her discovery, Snow finally spoke and announced that she and David had some news to share.
She thanked them for coming at such a short notice and then the words "I'm pregnant" hushed everyone into a shocked silence. It only lasted a second before they erupted into words of congrats and loving hugs and then Regina simply stood from her seat at the end of the table and approached Snow who was seated across from her.
This girl had changed her entire life for better and for worse.
They loved each other, hated each other, tried to kill each other and then… They healed each other and Regina would have never believed that she could be this proud and happy of the little girl she had once saved, the girl she had once hated.
Everyone became quiet as Regina knelt down and placed her hand on Snow's still flat stomach before looking up into hazel eyes. The pain of being separated from Emma and not being able to raise her was still there and Regina could see it. This was going to be the first baby that Snow will get to raise and the fact that it was because of Regina's curse, made the pain that much more raw. Regina smiled a genuine emotion filled smile and Snow placed her hand on top of hers as if they were grounding themselves from the hurt and sadness of the past.
"You're in for one hell of a ride," Regina whispered, her eyes suddenly showing her many years of motherhood that Snow never got to experience with Emma. She reached out, placing her palm on Snow's cheek and wiping away a single tear that escaped her shinning eyes. Snow then pulled Regina into her embrace and when Ivy started to squirm Regina put her down for only a second. A second was all it took for Ivy to take those first shaky steps to the table beside them and grab on to a chair. Everyone just watched in shock because they all knew how long Jason and Regina had been waiting to see her first steps. Regina was beaming until Ivy reached up and tipped over a cup of soda off the vacant table that Ruby had yet to clean. Soda spilled everywhere and Ivy giggled as it pooled around the beige Uggs Snow had bought for her a while back. Regina scowled and Jason immediately got up to help. He picked up Ivy before she could make a bigger mess.
"One hell of a ride huh," Snow stated affectionately and to everyone's surprise Regina laughed because this was it. This was her life… her happy ending and she wouldn't have it any other way.
