Disclaimer: I don't own Danny Phantom or The Avengers.

Everyone always envied the hero. Kids put posters of them on their walls, crowds applauded their heroics, and the whole world looked on with optimism. Most people didn't know the responsibility, the danger, that was involved though. The desire to protect everyone you can, knowing one day something was bound to go wrong. You couldn't protect everyone forever after all. Some events are just out of your control.

It has been one week since the darkest day in Amity Park's history. That day, the government funded Guys in White attacked Skulker, the Ghost Zone's self-proclaimed greatest hunter. They wanted to capture him for one of their numerous experiments. Perhaps if Danny Phantom was there, the whole disaster could've been avoided. Unfortunately, he never showed. The Guys in White's first mistake was bringing a squadron of fighters jets into downtown Amity Park during the chase. Their second was firing two highly explosive missiles, missiles which Skulker only need to turn intangible to avoid. By then the agents had realized their mistake, but it was already too late. The missiles kept going past Skulker and slammed into two different buildings, exploding on impact. The whole town appeared to be silent as both buildings collapsed in on themselves. There wasn't even a chance to escape the area. Particles of dust and other material flew everywhere, creating a dense, inescapable cloud over the area. A couple days later the rubble was finally cleaned up, showing the dead that lied beneath. This tragedy would later be dubbed the darkest day in Amity Park's history.

The event showed all of America, along with most of the world, that the Guy's in White was not suited to handle the growing threat of ghosts in Amity Park, dubbed the most haunted city on the entire planet. Most in Amity Park wondered where their hero Danny Phantom was during this time. Normally he would be the one to stop such an incident from occurring in the first place. While a larger number of ghosts had been escaping their dimension to enter the human world for reasons no one could yet explain, he was always there to prevent things from getting too dangerous. A tragedy like this was unthinkable in the minds Amity Park's citizens. Across the country, citizens clamored for the disbanding of the Guys in White and a better agency to step up to combat these ghosts. The president, not wanting to get rid of the Guys in White entirely, tried to ease these growing protest to no avail.

Since the United States efforts to stop the threat were a complete failure and Danny Phantom was not a reliable source to take on the responsibility of such a job, the United Nations decided to solve the problem themselves. At first they were going to send in soldiers, but many of the nations did not want to send troops in themselves, especially for something they didn't consider a threat to their own sovereignty, so they abandoned the idea. That's when the Security Council remembered they had a special task force for dealing with beings with supernatural powers, and, while this situation was abnormal even for their standards, they could get the job done. This task force was called the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, or, in other words, SHIELD. Their orders: take control of Amity Park and eliminate all ghostly threats.

Nick Fury, executive director of SHIELD, was anything but happy with this call. Then again, he was rarely happy. Currently he was aboard SHIELD's main hellicarrier flying above the Atlantic Ocean after just receiving his orders to head to Amity Park. He had heard of this city and their problem from the news while they were flying across Poland on another mission. There were too many inconsistencies in the story being told for the information to prove reliable though and he absolutely hated going into a situation with no information. Unfortunately for him, that didn't matter as he didn't have a choice. He couldn't ignore an order from the Security Council, only deviate from it to a degree. No, he had to do this. Well at least he would get to say he fought a ghost.

Turning to face Maria Hill, his second in command and lieutenant, he said, "This ship has a new course. Take us to Amity Park, Indiana."

Most of the citizens of Amity Park were busy doing their normal everyday things. Whether that be shopping, yard work, socializing, or just relaxing after a hard day of labor. There was a lack of ghost attacks that day and most wanted to use that to their advantage. Peace and quiet was a rarity after all. That was before everyone saw the huge shadow that enveloped the city. If they looked up, they would notice a giant aircraft carrier flying across the sky with four huge engines keeping it afloat. Several groups of F-18's flew past it while in formation, causing a loud booming sound to erupt in the sky, almost like an alarm or wake up call. After a couple minutes of tense silence, troop transports took off from the carrier and began landing in different parts of Amity Park. To an outside observer it would look identical to an invasion. Fortunately, or possibly unfortunately, that wasn't the case. On the television and radio of every home and store in Amity Park came a message transmitted from the hovering fortress. Nick Fury stood in front of a black banner with the SHIELD logo imprinted on it and a microphone in his hand.

"People of Amity Park. My name is Nick Fury, director of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, codenamed SHIELD. We are here on orders from the United Nations to secure this area and stop the growing threat of these so called supernatural apparitions, or ghosts. With permission from the United Nations and the president of the United States of America, Amity Park is now under Martial Law. You all will take orders from me and my subordinates from now on. Any ghost, no matter their affiliation, will be shot on sight. My men are specially trained for these types of situations so do not worry. We will try to act as swiftly and quietly as we can. That is all."

As soon as the message cut off, soldiers could be seen marching down every main street of Amity Park and still more transports came bringing supplies, including weapons and armored vehicles, down from the helicarrier.

No one in Amity Park knew what was going to happen. They just knew that their home had become a staging ground for a battle soon to come. A battle against ghosts.
