'Gooooood Morning Campers! It's time to wake up and greet the new day!'
Alyssa jerked awake and moaned as 'Mom's' overly cheery voice rang through hidden speakers and echoed through the camp. The small blonde sat up and rubbed her shoulders and arms as she realized how cold it was and looked around the cabin for a second before she saw that the door was wide open letting the early morning air in. She stared at it oddly, remembering that she had locked it but shrugged thinking maybe the lock hadn't been secure like she had thought. Slipping from her bed she went over and closed the door before digging through her bags to retrieve some clean cloths. As she changed she listened to the announcements which were now being given by Gomez who, judging by the shouting and grunting that took place for a moment, had actually wrestled the sound system from 'Mom'.
'Sorry about that everyone… Today is a new day here at Camp C-Sharp and today is also the day you all will receive your schedules for your classes and your free time… I will also like to remind the drummers that the trash cans are NOT drums so please don't take them; to the trumpet players, please don't lose your mouth pieces because we do not carry spares…. Um… Oh! To the tuba players please don't pour soda into your instrument, because trust me, it seems like a good idea… It's not… And I would like to remind you ALL that hanging other peoples' underwear from the flag pole is also against the rules. And yes Jeff, this is directed to you… See you all at breakfast!'
Alyssa laughed as she pulled her shirt on, grabbed her guitar and walked out the door. Everyone was running back and forth in a panic trying to get ready. She could even see Nico attempting to carry half his drum set over to the arts and crafts building. With a slight smile Alyssa went straight to the mess hall for breakfast and again she was shocked to see another buffet.
"What the heck is with all the food?" She said out loud as she grabbed a plate.
"What's wrong with having a choice?" A voice said and she spun around to see Gomez standing there with a smile and an empty plate in his own hands.
"Nothing's wrong with it, it just seems like a lot of food is all… It's almost like they are trying to make us fat so they can eat us or something." She smiled at her little joke and Gomez laughed a little too but it almost seemed a little nervous. It dawned on her that Gomez always seemed nervous when it came to morbid jokes, Alyssa just turned back to the buffet and grabbed a poppy seed muffin and a cold carton of milk before heading towards an empty table towards the back of the mess hall; Gomez filled his own plate before following and sitting down in the seat across from her.
"So you didn't sing last night, what's up?" He asked before shoveling a few bites of eggs into his mouth. The small blonde across from him didn't say anything at first as she nibbled at the corner of her muffin. "Stage fright?" Gomez pushed and she shook her head. "Then what?"
"When I play I wanna make the people who listen focus on the moment, to really get into the song and just be spontaneous or even cry if the music calls for it… It wasn't because I had stage fright or something I just didn't feel like the time was right." She answered and Gomez looked at her with reddening cheeks. "Besides I had nothing prepared and I also tend to write strange or disturbing songs… Some of them others can relate to if they get past tone of it and actually listen to the words." Alyssa shrugged and finally just bit into her muffin.
"Wow that was deep… How old are you?" He asked and she looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Seventeen, how old are you?" She returned the question with a slight smile.
"Me? I… I'm twenty-two." He then looked down and stared at his food and Alyssa returned to her muffin. She was a little surprised by his age because he looked like he could be the same age as her. Caleb and Nico arrived and retrieved their own breakfast before they also sat down on either side of the small blond like they did for dinner. The whole age conversation was dropped right away and discussion about classes took its place. Gomez fished a few papers out of a bag and passed them to the three campers in front of him and they took them to study.
"Boo yeah I got Rhythm and Dance with Alyssa!" Caleb punched the air with his fist as Nico snorted.
"Voice…." He said bluntly and tossed his paper onto the table. "I don't have any classes with any of you…" He griped and Alyssa glanced at the paper then her own.
"You and I have free time from twelve to three before we have our final classes." She pointed out and Nico 'humphed' and leaned back into his chair, obviously still not pleased. At this Alyssa shrugged and looked back to Gomez who she then realized was gone. This surprised her since she never heard him get up.
Looking around she finally spotted him in a far corner of the mess hall with about five other people, all dressed in the bright blue shirt that was that color of the day for the counselors. 'Mom' was there too with her pink scarf around her neck. Alyssa found it odd that only that group of counselors conversed like this but Jeff and about three others were not a part of it. Speaking of Jeff, he had plopped down in front of her and her friends in Gomez's vacant seat.
"Hey twerps… Ready for the big first day of classes?" He said as he peered at their schedules. "Awesome, you have free time in the afternoon. I'm in charge of swimming…" He looked at Alyssa with a smile. "Be sure to come and take a dip sometime… Water's great." Alyssa scowled at him and shoved the rest of her muffin in her mouth, chased it down with the rest of her milk and stood with a clipped goodbye to Nico and Caleb. They nodded to her before shooting Counselor Jeff dirty looks.
Alyssa walked about camp with her guitar in front of her, hanging from a thick strap, strumming it lightly with no real focus or intent. She hummed to herself as she gazed into space, unaware of the body now walking beside her until they cleared their throat. She looked to see a girl with short black hair and pale skin. She was taller than Alyssa and wore a white t-shirt under a pair of jean coveralls that had a bunny on the front. She carried a silver trumpet in her hands.
"Hello!" She said happily.
"Hiiiii…." Alyssa responded in an unsure manner. She was never one to welcome random strangers who just start following her around from out of nowhere. After all you never know if their a wack job or not. "Do I know you?"
"… No…" The girl said and she looked down at her trumpet as she fiddled with it. Alyssa continued to walk but the girl still followed.
"Who are you?" The small blonde sighed and the taller black haired girl frowned for a moment like she was thinking. She then shook her head and put her trumpet to her mouth but no sound came when she blew into it. They both frowned at the beautiful silver instrument to see that nothing was wrong with it. "What's your name?" Alyssa tried again.
"… Bunny…" She said quietly almost like her mind was someplace else. Alyssa opened her mouth to speak but another voice calling her name caught her attention and they stopped walking. The small blonde looked away only for a split second but when she looked back Bunny was alone. She looked back again to see Caleb running towards her waving.
"Come on! We need to get going or we'll be late." He shouted as he changed direction and Alyssa followed him. Unaware of the grey skinned, black haired girl that stood among the trees. Clutching her silver trumpet to her chest as she watched the happy campers running about, her coverall's covered in dirt and blood.
Alyssa stood in her first class and copied 'Mom' as she performed dance steps to some strange music that you normally see people do that 'interpretive' dance stuff with. Of course Alyssa's mind and heart wasn't in it because she was still disturbed by the little vanishing act that girl pulled on her. She still couldn't see how it was possible since they had been walking in a relatively open area. What's even more disturbing is that Caleb said he hadn't seen anyone with her at all.
Once the class ended about an hour and a half latter Alyssa sat on the steps strumming her guitar again and looking around at the campers on free time. With a sigh she pulled out a note pad and began to scribble down a few words before setting it aside and playing her guitar again. She paused when she saw someone pick up her note pad and she looked to see Gomez. He read it through and seemed to turn a little pale before clearing his throat and speaking the words out loud.
"Counting days like numbers, they all pass their prime. And again hypnotically swimming through time." He looked at Alyssa questioningly and she just shrugged at him.
"Just random words I may or may not use." She explained to him and ne nodded as he sat the note pad back on the ground.
"Soooo…. It's free time for you…. Are you going to go do something like watch a movie or go for a swim?" He asked and Alyssa shook her head.
"I'm really not one for a movie, and… I kinda… Can't swim…" She admitted ruefully and Gomez couldn't help but snicker. He sat down next to her and remained silent as she just kept running her fingers along the strings of her guitar, watching the campers to see if she could find the stranger girl that called herself 'Bunny' but sadly no luck. Caleb ran past wearing nothing but a pair of swim trunks and sneakers, a group of blond girls passed by exchanging makeup tips and whining about how some obscure part of them looked. And then there was the group of boys near the flag pole who were trying to heave a smaller boy-wearing a pair of oddly large glasses-up it. At this point, Gomez left her side and shouted at them to stop and leave the poor kid alone. All the boys dropped the bespectacled kid and scattered, running in different directions in an attempt to confuse Gomez and so that he couldn't get a good look at their faces. Which would have worked any other time! If Gomez hadn't caught one of them by the arm and slammed him to the ground with a solid thud. Gomez yanked the boy back to his feet while twisting his arm behind his back and holding it there. Gomez looked sadly back to Alyssa before marching the bully away as he shouted at him about rules and such. Alyssa sat impressed at the shorter counselor's surprisingly ample strength.
Once her free time was over with she attended her last two classes of the first day. Her final class was voice which was taught by 'Mom' whose real name, Alyssa had found, was Angelica.
Angelica spent the time gauging how well they sang. And apparently!
… Alyssa was 'pitchy'.
