When Lily turned eleven Harry took her on the traditional trip to Diagon Alley, just as he had with Al and James. Harry made sure to gather all of the traditional school supplies before stopping at Eeylops Owl Emporium which in his own personal opinion was the best part of the trip.
"Go on Lily, have your pick. Any animal except a rat, your mother would kill me if you got a rat." Harry said, nudging the girl forward. With her father's permission granted Lily moved forward, wandering the shop as her father talked with the owner. Contrary to its name the shop housed all sorts of animals and Lily had her pick, something she took very serious. So she perused the cages looking at the owl, but Al already had an owl, and in her opinion he wasn't all that great. There were ferrets, like James had but they weren't very attractive in her opinion. There were cats, but they all seemed to have ulterior motives.
Lily sighed she was very quickly running out of options. Finally Lily reached the back of the shop, where she could no longer see her father; she had also reached the end of animals. Giving up hope on finding her perfect new friend, Lily turned to head back when two yellow eyes caught her attention. They were hiding under a stairwell, in a cupboard, with the door only slightly askew. Lily moved forward opening the door more fully, there laid a shaggy black dog. They stared at each other for a moment before coming to a decision. They moved towards each other at the same time; lily sinking to her knees to hug the dog as he moved forward to lick her face. That was how Harry had found them, and his gut told him he was going to have to contact professor McGonagall for a favor.
