I don't own anyone at all unfortunately.
Steve was frozen at the Director's words, staring at the screen uncomprehendingly.
"Black?" Tony said incredulously, his voice sounding distant in Steve's ears. "Are you saying Black is magical?"
"According to this machine Stark," Fury's voice said. "Of course, we have no evidence of her being magic but this does put her in danger, seeing as the people who kidnapped the Potters and Dr Lupin are going to track her down."
"Well then let's go put her in a safe place quickly," Steve said urgently, already moving towards the door. To his surprise and frustration, none of the others moved, they were all staring at him in confusion.
"What?" he all but growled edgily. Harriet was in danger. He couldn't care less if she was magic or not, the fact that she was in danger because he'd left her was on the forefront of his mind.
"No one knows were Black lives Capsicle," Tony said slowly, hands up in surrender position. "We have no way of knowing besides contacting her and hoping she responds, or by crashing her next meeting."
Steve stared at them all for a moment before turning back to the lift. "Where are you going?" the four other Avengers called, startled.
"To the Black's place," Steve said simply.
Everyone stared uncomprehendingly at him for several long seconds before Tony's eyes widened. "No, no, it can't be! Seriously?" Steve nodded his head. Tony glared. "That's so unfair!"
"And now I'm really confused," Clint announced as he looked between the two of them. "What's happened?"
"Steve's secret girlfriend is Black!" Tony complained. "That's so unfair! She rejected me, I was totally sure she was asexual."
"Wait, you're going out with the Harriet Black?" Clint said, jaw dropping in surprise. Steve once again nodded his head, this time impatiently.
"How did you-"
"I'll tell you on the way, let's go now!" Steve finally snapped and they went silent, eyes wide. Steve didn't realize just how tight his grip on the bar in the lift had been until it had crumpled in two. "That can come out my pay check," he said, deathly calm. "Just get in."
Understandably, everyone got in.
The Avengers (minus Thor) were all watching dubiously as Steve knocked urgently on the door of Harriet's place. Sirius opened it and eyed all of them. "Hi. You guys are the Avengers right?" he said, munching on a chicken wrap.
"Sirius, is Hari home?" Steve said quickly.
Sirius blinked and peered at Steve. He blinked again. "By the Mage, my goddaughter is going out with bloody Captain America," the English man said in surprise. He turned back to the others. "You can all come in I guess, except Stark."
Tony flipped his faceplate up, a scowl on his face. "Mr Black, that is not cool."
"You're not cool," Sirius retorted with an identical scowl.
"I just realised how alike you guys are," Clint said as he looked between them, and received twin glares for the comment.
"Sirius," Steve said gravely. "I think Harriet might be in trouble."
Before Steve could even blink, Sirius had him shoved against the wall with a thin wooden stick pressed into his throat, all of the familiar mischief in Sirius' eyes had disappeared. "What the hell did you do to her!?" he snarled in an animalistic-like way. Immediately the man had all of the other Avengers' weapons aimed at him, but he didn't seem to notice or care.
Steve felt like he'd been punched in the gut. "She's not home?" he croaked. It shouldn't have taken her that long to get home. Even just walking from the theatre to here would only take her thirty minutes or so. But she couldn't have gone missing in that short time, could she?
"Where did you leave her?" Sirius asked lowly.
"This is where I left her," Steve said as he stared at the corner. He bowed his head in shame. This was all his fault. He should have ignored the pager after all.
"Looks like she was captured after all," Natasha commented, pulling out her phone to, no doubt, call Fury.
Sirius kneeled on the ground, eyes scanning around with a small frown marring his face. Steve walked over to him and knelt down next to him. "So is Hari really magical?" he asked quietly.
"I don't trust you enough to answer that," the dark haired man bit out, looking at Steve with a gaze full of pain and determination. Steve acknowledged this with a nod. "Though one thing you should know Captain," Sirius said, sneering the word and making Steve flinch. "Is that Harriet is far from defenceless. Whoever took her, caught her by surprise." Sirius' glare intensified. "And I swear, if you are the reason Hari is in danger, I will kill you slowly and in the most horrible fashion I can think of," he promised darkly.
Steve gulped slightly and nodded his head. "How did you come to the assumption she was magical anyway?" Sirius asked as he sniffed the pavement.
"There was a machine," Steve began to explain. "It tracks magical signatures-"
"I've found something!" Clint called and held up a golden wristwatch that Steve recognised as Harriet's. Sirius' head snapped up and he was instantly looking at it, inspecting it. He cursed.
"Without this she won't be able to contact us," he said bitterly. He walked up and down, examining the path. "Alright I think I've got it," he said finally, before looking at them all suspiciously, wondering whether or not he could trust them. His eyes settled on Tony. "Stark, can you search up three people for me?"
"Of course," Tony said, offended that the other man even considered the fact Tony couldn't do something. Sirius looked at the watch in his hand silently before looking at Steve his eyes showing confusion, frustration and above all, fear. And the fear made Steve's stomach clench painfully. Sirius' eyes flickered over to Tony. "Antonin Dolohov, Fenrir Greyback and," here Sirius paused to take a calming breath, "Severus Snape." Steve did not miss the utter look of loathing when Sirius said the last name and he doubted that the others did either.
"Antonin Dolohov - wanted for murder, plagiarism, theft… Fenrir Greyback – wanted for murder, assault, rape," Steve's blood went cold at hearing that, "and destruction of property," Tony said as he read it off his screen. "Severus Snape – his record is clean, but he's been spotted around the other two before." Tony looked up at Sirius, eyes widening. "You think these people have her?"
"I'm practically certain of it," Sirius corrected, glancing around, thinking.
"They come from France," Tony said, tracking them via Jarvis. "But as far as I can tell they haven't been here or even gone back in at least five years." Sirius growled in frustration.
"Perhaps they went by a different way," Bruce commented quietly, eyebrows pinched together as he thought. "They have a billionaire with them right? They don't want anyone to know."
"But even if we know they're in France there is a million places they could be hiding," Clint pointed out. He was frowning. "SHIELD could probably track them…"
"No," Sirius said, looking frightened. Steve realised with a pang why. Anyone who had even the slightest 'superhero' quality to them had been rounded up by SHIELD. Seeing as SHIELD was with the army, if Harriet was indeed magical, they would no doubt take her away and subdue her if she did not agree to help them. And as Harriet had told him many times before, she could not stand the army. Steve's stomach clenched again.
"We can do this another way, without involving SHIELD," he said, looking pointedly at Clint and Natasha. Natasha eyed him before reluctantly closing the phone. The two, while still SHIELD agents, had lost attachment to the place after Coulson's passing. They were Avengers first and foremost now.
"Well then what do you propose Mr Black?" Tony said as he eyed the other man with a raised eyebrow.
Sirius bared his teeth before he glanced at them and then back at Steve. "Fred Weasley the Barista," he said suddenly. Steve blinked at the sudden change of topic. What did the Weasley boy have anything to do with this? Tony had already searched him up it seemed.
"Sure, he lives not far from here. In fact, right there." Tony pointed at the dingy apartment building that could be seen at the end of the street.
"What's so important about him?" Natasha asked as they walked over.
Sirius eyed her before explaining slowly. "Hari mentioned him this very morning," Sirius said as he watched Steve. Steve felt like he was being x-rayed under the godfather's intense gaze. "She also gave him something. One of those hand held phones everyone has."
Walking into the building (and scaring the lady who was at the reception) they all tramped up stairs to the room. Fred opened the door, obviously had just been asleep, and yawned widely, asking without looking at them, "What?"
"Fred Weasley?" Sirius said carefully. Fred's head snapped up and his eyes widened as he saw them all. He looked ready to faint. Steve was really getting edgy by this point and stared hard down at Fred making the boy's eyes widen.
"Sirius said that you've been given something by Hari. Is this true?"
"Oh, ah, yes!" Fred said, suddenly rushing back into his apartment and digging under some dirty washing. Natasha wrinkled her nose in distaste. Finally he emerged with a sleek phone which had the familiar black fox on the back. "Here," he breathed, handing it to Sirius. Then he blinked. "Oh I also got something else!" he said before he pulled a black ring out of his pocket.
Steve watched as Sirius almost dropped the phone, going deathly pale. He made to pick up the ring before taking his hand back if stung. "Rogers take it," he croaked, looking terrified now. Steve removed it from Fred's hand and held it gently in his. The stone was very cold, as if had been sitting in the freezer its whole life. This piece of jewellery Harriet would never leave behind, Steve knew. The whole time he was with her, she would always unconsciously touch it, as if it reassured her. He hadn't really thought much of it before but now, seeing Sirius' reaction, he knew it was more than just a ring.
"Hey Mr Black, it's just a ring right?" Tony said uncomfortably, looking unnerved at Sirius' reaction.
"This is very bad," Sirius said as he fumbled with the phone. "Without that Harriet is practically normal," he mumbled, obviously throwing all caution out the window.
"Practically normal?" Bruce repeated quietly. Sirius finally found what he was looking for and pressed a button.
"Please enter Marauder passcode."
"I solemnly swear I'm up to no good," Sirius whispered.
Harriet's face appeared on the screen. "Padfoot," she began. "I've some news that shouldn't be relevant but if you're watching this, than it appears I was wrong." She grimaced, her green eyes looking pained. "After meeting Fred Weasley, I did some research," Steve glanced at Sirius to see he was absorbed in what she was saying. Even Tony was looking interested. "Voldemort's here too Sirius," Harriet said, her green orbs wide with fear. Steve's breath caught. He had never seen Harriet so terrified. The emotion looked so foreign. "I-I don't think he's himself, but at the same time," her voice suddenly went so quiet that Steve almost missed it. "I don't want to kill him again," she whispered. "I've got too much blood on my hands Sirius. I killed you, and Remy, and Ma and Da." She blinked back tears. "Tom, Tom's a monster but I can't kill him again Siri. I can't." Suddenly she got a determined look on her face. "Little Hangleton Riddle Manor Sirius. Merlin can help you locate it." Harriet's face went wistful. "And tell Steve I love him. If I wasn't a trouble magnet," she said with a grimace, "It probably would have been a simple happy ever after romance." She smiled wistfully before shaking her head. "Anyway, this is just a failsafe. I doubt that Voldemort is himself." Her smile was blinding. "A date with Steve! Oh I'm excited! If he wasn't a damn technophobe," she said with a pout. "I could tell as soon as I saw him. I seem to attract them to me don't I? I love you Siri, don't ever doubt it." There was noise coming from the side. "And that's you getting up. Merlin, stop the film and put up blueprints. I need to finish the new laptop for the meeti- End of Message."
There was a long silence that did nothing to quell the millions of questions running through his mind. It was Fred Weasley who broke the oppressive silence. "Who's Voldemort?"
Steve watched as a bitter smile appeared on Sirius' face. "Lord Voldemort, as he liked to call himself, was a mass murderer in the world before this one," Sirius said as he turned to look at the other Avengers. "I don't see any reason to keep this from you, as if this is Voldemort, than I'm gonna need some help taking him down." His eyes softened as they hit Steve. "I'm sorry Steve. It seems it isn't your fault after all," he said quietly, obviously ashamed about his earlier reaction. Steve put a hand on his shoulder.
"It's okay," he said, accepting the apology. "So could you explain about this Voldemort?"
Sirius nodded. "Yeah. But first we need to find Riddle Manor. Come on, let's get back to my place." He turned to leave when a throat cleared. They turned to see Fred standing uncertainly at the doorway, his eyes on the phone. "Oh!" Sirius said as he realised what the problem was. "Here."
Sirius handed the Apparate over, Fred smiling gratefully. "I won't speak a word of this," Fred promised solemnly. "But I just wanna know. Did Harriet and I ever know each other...?"
"…in your past life?" Sirius finished. "Yeah. You had a younger brother who was her best friend. Your family of nine took her in when she was younger. I think you two went out at one point, I'm not too sure," he said with a small shrug.
Fred looked surprised by this but nodded his head in appreciation. "Thanks."
Sirius smiled. "You're welcome."
As they walked to the Black House, Sirius seemed to be formulating a plan. "So did you know any of us in your past lives?" Clint asked, curious. Everyone couldn't help but believe Sirius when he explained his and Harriet's situation, and how they'd come to be in this world. Steve thought it was quite interesting and wondered what he was in a past life.
Sirius blinked before looking at them. "Now that you mention it, I think I did. Stark over there for example," he said, waving at Tony. "He was a nosy Ravenclaw. Halfblood, always prying into everyone's business. I pranked him often. Can't figure out why I didn't remember that before." Tony looked offended at this. Sirius then pointed at Natasha, his memories of his Hogwart's day slowly returning to him. "You – or well, your past life you - and I had a one night stand. I remember that very well. Slytherin and very, very flexible," he said with a perverted smile that made Natasha twitch. He looked at Bruce thoughtfully. "I think I heard of you from Remus once, you were a werewolf. He said you were one of the alright ones." Bruce looked fascinated at this news. He looked at Clint before shaking his head. "I don't know you," he said with a shrug. "Or Steve. You were Muggles I suppose." "
Muggles?" Clint repeated.
"Non-magical," Sirius clarified. They entered the Black house and Sirius spoke instantly as they entered. "Spirit, locate Riddle Manor in Little Hangleton."
"Yes sir," a voice, that momentarily Steve thought was Jarvis, replied.
"An AI," Tony said, fascinated.
"I am Merlin. And I am a Magical AI," the AI replied to Tony. "I am far beyond the capabilities of a normal AI." Sirius was brought to Steve's attention as he threw something at the Captain. As Steve caught it, he saw it was some sort of sweet. Clint already had his in his mouth, sucking it furiously. Natasha was unwrapping her own with a curious look on her face.
"What is it?" Steve said as he unwrapped his own. It was a small yellow candy. Steve put it to his lips and almost spat it out. The candy tasted like a very sour lemon.
"It's a lemon drop," Sirius said as he unwrapped Tony's for him (Tony couldn't do it with the Iron Man suit). "As for what it does, it will allow you speak French." That made both Tony and Bruce look like they wanted to dissect it. "It's magic," Sirius said with a shrug. "An old thing my friends and I came up with for a prank. Once you suck them, you can't speak anything but French for twenty four hours."
"You're gonna give me some of these later," Tony announced as he sucked on his own, his face becoming pinched.
"Sir I have arrived at a problem," Merlin piped up. "I have detected a magical barrier that blocks all sorts of technology over all of Little Hangleton. I cannot get a read on the exact location but I have a basic idea. For me to break through the barrier it will take approximately three days."
"That's too long," Steve said as he glanced at Sirius who nodded grimly in agreement.
"Where is this Little Hangleton?" Tony asked, his eyes gleaming in determination.
As they flew across to Little Hangleton, Steve couldn't help but be worried for Harriet as Sirius explained Voldemort to the Avengers. "He sounds worse than Loki," Steve said grimly.
"I wouldn't doubt it," Sirius said with a short, bitter laugh. "Loki may be a Norse God but he wasn't near as immortal as he claimed. He could still die. Voldemort had only one weakness, which was Hari. If Hari hadn't ended him, he would have taken over the world with ease."
Suddenly the Quinjet shook as they hit something dead on. "That must be the barrier," Natasha said dryly as Clint piloted the plane to land. As they clambered out, Sirius, to their surprise, took off his watch and dropped his car keys and wallet on the ground.
"Nothing running on electricity can pass through that barrier," Sirius explained. That led to the whole team emptying many things into the Quinjet. Tony, Steve could tell, felt exposed as he just had a gun to defend himself with. The Iron Man suit which ran on the Arc Reactor, still used electricity for its backup power. Tony was most definitely going to change that the next chance he got. As the team would soon found out, Riddle Manor was a lot harder to find than any of them had imagined.
"This is frustrating!" Steve finally exploded, surprising his team with his outburst. It was their second day of searching. The first day they had just gotten lost. Little Hangleton was not as little as they were made to believe.
"Maybe we should try the yellow pages?" Bruce suggested.
They all stared at him before Tony laughed lightly, though it was slightly strained from the lack of sleep. "Oh Bruce! You are a miracle worker! Let's find a copy."
While the others went in search for the yellow pages, Steve stayed back as he watched Sirius looking into the distance. "She's been with Voldemort for two days," Sirius said with a sigh.
"She'll be fine though right?" Steve said, trying to stay optimistic.
Sirius smiled crookedly, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Sure Steve. We don't know if this Voldemort has magic. Though it would be safe to assume he does, seeing the magical barrier that surrounds Little Hangleton."
"I found it," Natasha called and everyone looked over to her. "It's just down the road. I don't know how we could have missed it."
"Must be a notice-me-not charm," Sirius said as he glanced towards the road. His hand inched toward his dud wand.
"Let's go then," Steve said as he got to his feet and followed Natasha down the road. Seeming to blend out of the trees as they stared directly at it, the manor loomed dauntingly over them as they snuck up to the door. It was decided that Sirius and Steve would enter first, and with a quick kick, Steve smashed the door open. He was shocked by what he saw. Disseminated around the room were several bodies, clothed in dark robes. Clint rolled the closest body over to reveal Greyback's face staring blankly up at them, eyes thrown wide in shock and a bullet hole clean through his temple.
