Starting Over

Epilogue

3 years later…

"Daddy's gonna be home in a while. Do you wanna come downstairs?" asked Ellie.

"Yeah!"

Ellie picked up her two-year-old, Carmen Elizabeth Gutierrez, and took her downstairs to play in the living room. Aalyah and Dominik were already downstairs, watching television.

"Hey, guys," greeted Ellie.

"Hey mom," replied her step-children. Since Angie attempted to kill Ellie, Dominik and Aalyah had been referring to Ellie as their mother. The first time it happened, Ellie had silently cried about it because she felt as though they trusted her fully.

Ellie didn't think about Angie often anymore. Since the incident, Ellie hadn't seen her- and she wanted to keep it that way. Angie had pled guilty to assault, and was now serving a ten year jail sentence. In addition, she was forced to give up her parental rights for good. This meant that Ellie and Oscar now had full custody of them. Since Ellie no longer worked, she was able to take care of them when Oscar was on the road.

Ellie looked at the children as they sat peacefully in the living room. Dominik was still watching TV while Aalyah read a story to Carmen. Ellie felt so blessed that this was her life. A few years ago, she never would have believed that she would be a full-time mom with two step-children and a child of her own, nor did she think she would ever get married. But in just a few short years, all of those things had happened- and Ellie wouldn't have traded it for anything.

"I'm home!"

Ellie snapped out of her thoughts and picked up Carmen to greet Oscar. Dominik and Aalyah followed close behind.

"Oh, I missed you all so much," greeted Oscar. He hugged Dominik and Aalyah before planting a kiss on the cheeks of his wife and his young daughter.

"We all missed you too," replied Ellie.

Oscar glanced at the time and saw that it was ten o'clock at night. "I think we all need to go to bed. Especially you," he said as he looked at his youngest child.

"Aww!" whined Dominik and Aalyah.

"I know, but it's a school night, guys. I do not want to have to drag your butts out of bed because you two stayed up too late," explained Ellie.

Everyone made their way upstairs to get ready for bed. Ellie helped Carmen get ready for bed before she and Oscar kissed her goodnight. After they said goodnight to Dominik and Aalyah, the couple went to their own bedroom and got settled into their king-size bed.

"How long are you going to be home for?" asked Ellie.

"It was supposed to be for a week, but I booked some time off, so I'll be home for a month," answered Oscar.

"Well I'm glad to hear that. I missed you so much."

"I missed you too, babe. I love you so much, Mrs. Gutierrez."

The use of "Mrs. Gutierrez" caused Ellie to giggle slightly. He hadn't called her that since the day they got married.

"I love you too, Mr. Gutierrez," she replied.

The couple embraced and shared a passionate kiss, happy to be in each other's arms once again.

"You know, when Angie and I broke up, I honestly never thought that I could be happy ever again. But I'm so glad that you proved me wrong. I'm so proud to call you my wife," expressed Oscar. He became a little teary-eyed thinking about how much love he felt for his wife and his children.

"And I'm so proud to call you my husband," replied Ellie. She kissed his lips to prove her point. Oscar wrapped his arms around her and returned the kiss.

"So starting over wasn't so bad after all," said Oscar.

"Not if it means being with you for forever and a day," responded Ellie.

The couple kissed one more time before falling asleep into each other arms, happy with how their lives were at that moment in time.
