CHAPTER THREE:

AN: THIS FIC IS ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE, I TELL YOU! ALIVE! MWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA—cough,cough.

Yeah, I decided this HAD to be updated and watching 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' put me in the mood. I just hope it comes out okay. (wrings hands together).

.

PS: After writing this chapter and re-watching 'Captain America' I want to eat steak….mmmmm,steak.

.

PPS: I'm going through some difficult….situations right now guys and, for those of you who know the Lord, I could really do with some prayer right now. Thank you.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

She was panicking.

.

Steve Rogers may not have been an expert with the ladies (despite their attention to him after his transformation) but he had some idea of how to calm people down after leading many attacks in the War.

.

Walking over to a nearby comfy chair, he sat down and settled the young woman in his lap, not thinking to question why he wasn't blushing ten ways to Sunday over the action. "Heah, heah, I need you to listen to me," he tilted her head up gently so that she was looking him in the eyes, her own hazel ones full of fear. "It's alright. You've been through a lot, maybe you just got your phone number mixed up; I've known men who've forgotten their own last names after a battle. What you need to remember is that you're safe here."

.

"No, no, nonononono. I did NOT forget my phone number." She said this all very quickly, fisting her hands in his shirt. "This doesn't make sense. They wouldn't have moved without telling me!" Her eyes narrowed at him suddenly, spitting fire. "And I HAVEN'T been through a BATTLE!"

.

"Okay, okay," he decided to just agree with her.

.

"That may be because you might not exist in this world." The sound of Tonys voice made them both look up.

.

The mechanical genius had genuine sympathy in his brown eyes as he carried a silver tray with a play of medium steak and a glass of some kind of brown liquid.

.

Even though Steve Rogers was used to things that would probably boggle others brains (coming into the year 2009 after being frozen in 1942 was just one example) he still found what the genius said a little hard to swallow. "Come again, Tony?"

.

"Well, think about it, Cap. She came through a wormhole. Where in the rule-book does it say that the other end of that wormhole had to be in our world? Or do I need to remind you of our blonde, thunder-making friend." the billionaire stopped to stand infront of her. "Here's your steak, sleeping beauty now, come on, eat up."

.

She just blinked up at him then looked at the tray. "I, I really don't think I can eat right now."

.

"Aw, come on Princess, after I made this specifically for you?" then he shrugged. "Well, Jarvis made it, but I told him to so, really, it came from me." The genius then gave Steve a surprisingly stern look. "Put her down, Capsicle, she needs to eat."

.

The Super-Soldier returned the look with one of his own when Cassie sniffed the air, completely oblivious to the alpha stare-down that was going on literally over her head. "It does smell good…" she reached up and under her glasses to rub a tear from her eye.

.

"There, see?" Tony rubbed it in. He walked over to a small table and sat the tray on it before going back and holding a hand out to help her up out of the Captains lap.

.

Unconsciously, Steves arms tightened around the young woman in his lap before he noticed and forced himself to let go. He tried to ignore that strange triumph that shone in Tonys eyes as Cassie took his hand and let him help her up. When she wobbled a little, both pairs of hands shot out to steady her but she was making her way soon enough over to the little but ornate table where the food was waiting.

.

Ever the gentleman (at least when it suited him) Tony pulled her chair out so she could sit down.

.

`This is insane…..completely and totally insane. Maybe I'm still dreaming? Yeah, that has to be it. I'll wake up and I'll be in my own bed….` But, still, she had never had a dream as…..tactile…..as this one was. She could even smell the steak as she cut into it.

.

"Speaking of wormholes," Tony said gently, pulling a seat to sit across from her. "I need to know what you remember last."

Steve looked like he wanted to roll his eyes and only refrained from doing so just barely. "Really, Tony, is now the right time-"

The Iron Mans head snapped to the American soldier with another glare. "Now is the best time, while it's still fresh in her head." Again his voice gentled as he looked back at her. "Okay, sleeping beauty, what do you remember last."

.

She chewed, swallowed and shrugged. "I remember going to sleep in my own bed then waking up in that big one." She gestured vaguely back towards the bedroom she had come from. "Which kind of contributes to the whole dream theory."

.

"So you don't remember falling out of the sky and generally causing a mass panic?" Tony asked gently.

.

Cassie gawked at him and Steve groaned and put his face in one hand, debating whether or not he could get away with putting the Iron Man in a sleeper hold.

.

"Uh, no, I don't remember anything like that." Their visitor finally said, eyes huge.

"Well, no worries, no harm was done," Tony said jovially. "Though you did make the front page of the newspaper. And I was the one to catch you, by the way." As if to present damning evidence in a court-case, Tony whipped a copy of said newspaper out of his back pocket and presented it to her.

.

There, in black and white on the front page, was a somewhat grainy picture of a man flying just below something like a cyclone with a female form in his arms. Below the 'cyclone' poised a man holding something that looked like a huge hammer, a great, big, monster on steroids, another female form, a guy holding what looked like a bow and arrow and another man in a masked suit holding a stars-and-banners shield.

.

The headline read; 'Stranger From the Sky; Free-Falling Femme rescued by the Man of Iron.`

.

Steak forgotten, Cassie pushed herself away from the table. "Oookay, I think I need to go now. If I could get a taxi to an airport or something, I need to get back to Ohio….." suddenly she groaned and let her head fall in her hands, speaking to herself; "….but that takes money….Lots of money. I need to pay for a taxi, a plane ticket…"

.

"Ma'm, with all due respect, I think you should stay with us until we know what's going on here." Steve Rogers said gently as he stood, moved over to her chair and placed a calming hand on her shoulder.

.

She looked up at the man who looked like a farm-fresh country-apple-kinda guy and sighed. "Well, since this is most likely a dream, I don't see how it could hurt….."

.

That was when the mechanical voice of 'Jarvis' spoke through the walls again. "Sir, Bruce Banner has arrived."

.

"Ah, the jolly green giant himself," Tony said, rubbing his palms together as if plotting something dastardly. "Send him on up, Jarvis."

0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

AN: And there's another chapter after perhaps a year of being left alone. I'm sorry it's so short but I wanted to get it posted before one in the morning and it is now…. 12:48 pm midnight here.
