Clara groaned as she stirred awake. Opening each eyelid was a chore and she focused her tired body to respond as she ordered them open.

The familiar beams and lights come into focus. She was on the TARDIS.

She saw the familiar form of the Doctor next, his body hunched, tension lining his features as he turned to her.

"Doctor..."

He moved closer and clasped her hand. "You Impossible Girl."

"... You're married?"

The Doctor threw his head back and laughed. He wiped away tears of mirth as he returned his attention to her. "Oh Clara. With everything you've just been through, that's your first question?"

"You don't seem the marrying type," she croaked.

"I'm not," he replied. Clara watched his features subtly change.

"You loved her didn't you?"

"So much." He smiled at her. "River Song is no ordinary woman."

Words left her lips before they'd even entered her brain. "I know."

Later that night, Clara sat on the stairs as she tried to think it all through. Her brow furrowed as the Doctor moved around the TARDIS console, pushing buttons and pulling levers.

"Doctor?"

"Hmm?" came the distracted reply.

"If Professor Song, I mean your wife – River – is such a part of your life, why don't I remember her? Why didn't I meet her?"

The Doctor paused and smiled ruefully.

"Probably because when River's around, I don't need saving."
