The First Letter

Harry was walking towards the school. Dreading whatever both Dudley and Piers would do to him for the incident with the boa yesterday. They were likely to beat him up if they caught him. Harry was hoping he'd be able to avoid this as he was already in pain from the lashings he got from his uncle last night for the incident yesterday. The only reason that Harry was able to walk still was because it had been a night before school and his aunt and uncle couldn't bother in dealing with the school if Harry had been absent without them needing to give a reason for the absence. _

Later found Harry finding that his hope to avoid Dudley and Piers had come through, they were kept behind in class to finish the homework that they'd not done due to focusing on Dudley's birthday party. Since Harry wouldn't need to worry about Dudley and Piers he was leisurely walking towards the library to stay until the time that the Dursley's would allow him in the house to start doing his chores.

While Harry was in the library he read information about snakes, he wanted to look up talking to snakes. He'd never heard of it before and it was interesting for Harry. He liked looking up the things that happened around him, as it seemed like it couldn't be explained but Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon seemed to know what it was, and hate him more each time something weird happened.

Harry was not a stupid or oblivious child. He'd realized young that weird things happened when he was feeling particularly emotional at any point in time. Sadly, Harry was not able to figure out how to know when something was going to happen until after he'd started school. He was able to wish and make things happened when he really wanted to. He couldn't do a lot of things at first but as he got older he was able to things more often. Always making sure that things stayed clean or fresh, in better condition for longer. He also was able to make his aunts garden grow faster and healthier than everyone else in the neighbourhood. It got to a point that Uncle Vernon bought his aunt a greenhouse so that she'd be able to have fresh fruits and vegetables.

Of course his aunt killed every plant she ever tried to grow, so Harry was the one to tend to the greenhouse. He loved being able to watch how fast he could make the plants grow and how tasty it was. He learned early on to never try to get people to treat him better. It always ended and he got punished for it. From that point on he learned to divert attention from himself so that when he did the strange things nobody would know or think of it. Sometimes he got distracted and it got noticed, yesterday for example Piers shouldn't have been able to notice that Harry was talking to the snake.

Harry looked at the watch he was wearing and saw that it was nearing the time that he'd need to head back to the Dursley's, so he packed his things to leave. He'd not been able to find anything, yet again, about the things that he was able to do. Anything that he's been able to find was in fantasy books. The only word that came to mind for it was Magic. A word that Harry was punished for anytime his aunt and uncle heard it, but it was the only word that would even begin to describe what he was able to do.

Four years ago when he was seven, the school had hosted an event for parents of students to go to the school and explain what they did for work. When someone's dad, whom was a nurse at the ER of a hospital described what he and his fellow colleagues did to help save people, it peaked his interest and so Harry had gone to research how to become a doctor. Finding out that he had to go to a specialized school to become one and that it also cost a lot of money. Knowing that the Dursley's plan to kick him out as soon as they could when he came of age and that they wouldn't even give any thought in helping him pay to go to school. Harry made a point to do everything that he could to make and save money to be able to go to school. Since he knew that he wouldn't be able to keep money at the Dursley's he was able to get a bank account opened for himself only with his aunts permission, of course Harry had to make it seem like it was her idea for Dudley and only got Harry one because she wanted no questions to be asked.

As soon as Harry had gotten the bank account Harry started going around the neighbourhood looking for odd jobs. At first nobody wanted his help because of the delinquent rumours about him. When his aunt had found out from the neighbours she was furious! Harry had to think fast and make it seem like she was the one to want Harry to do it so that he'd straighten out. After convincing his aunt of that he soon was able to get lots of jobs. The neighbours drinking up the thought that the Dursley's were trying to instill responsibility in Harry.

Since Harry has the help of his 'magic' he makes 50 pounds a day from working around the neighbourhood. His 'magic' helps him do whatever he's asked to do faster or he makes it seem like he's doing it but not, he got the idea from reading the fantasy books and trying it out. As a result Harry learned to time the 'magic' for when he can't be caught.

Since learning about how to sew, knit, crochet, and many other crafts that he could sell when he was nine. Harry stopped the odd jobs about the neighbourhood and focused only on selling his crafts anonymously as he couldn't make it known that it was him. He needed to focus on being able to support himself when he left the Dursley's. Harry wanted to be able to leave the Dursley's right away when he could make himself look like someone else, he had actually planned on doing it, had started the process to do it. But in the end, Harry decided not to as he still needed to go to school, and he couldn't leave while still going to school as the Dursley's would just take him from the school. In the end he decided to live there and stay as much as he could out of the Dursley's way and save for when he was older.

As usual Harry arrived before anyone in the Dursley family would be home, he went about checking to make sure that all of the chores he needed done were done. Hearing a swooping sound behind him, Harry turned to see an owl had landed on the grass holding it's leg towards him.

Harry being shocked fell back. The owl hooted, cocked it's head and hopped closer and presented Harry it's leg. Harry saw that there was an envelope tied to it's leg leaned forward and untied the envelope from the owl.

Once Harry had finished untying the letter the owl fluttered over the the bird feeder the Dursley's had in the backyard and began to eat.

Harry after watching the owl make itself comfortable looked down to the envelope in his hands.

Mr. H. Potter

The Cupboard under the Stairs

4 Privet Drive

Little Whinging

Surrey

Harry was startled that he dropped the letter, the letter plopped onto the ground. Harry picked up the letter and turned it over and notice that it was a bit too thick to be regular paper. Noticing the wax seal, Harry carefully started to open the letter wanting to preserve the wax. After all it was quite curious as to how someone would know that he slept in the cupboard, and then mail him through an owl of all things.

Harry upon opening the letter began to read,

HOGWARTS SCHOOL of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY

Harry felt a warm fluttering in his stomach, he was right! Magic was real! Harry was so excited that he now had a real explanation for what he could do. He wasn't the only freak!

He wasn't the only freak. That's right, the Dursley's, they must have known, they wouldn't allow him to go and they certainly wouldn't pay for him to learn it. It felt like he'd just had a giant bucket of ice water dropped over him. He wouldn't be able to go, his uncle would surely beat him within an inch of death. Harry neatly tucked the letter safely back into the envelope and put it in his school bag. He looked to the owl who was watching Harry. Harry spoke softly.

"I'm sorry, I won't be able to go." The owl gave a bob of it's head and with a hoot flew off, back to the sender likely.

With a heavy heart Harry continued on his usual routine for when the Dursley's arrived home. Everything would go back to normal and the invitation in his bag would soon be but a memory of regret.
