Day: 14
Harry POV
Harry opened his eyes when his feet hit the ground, savoring the feeling of the familiar magical transport. It was startlingly bright compared to the mist he had been in seconds before. Eyes smarting, and not caring in the slightest about his surroundings, he returned the weird bird hug he was getting as Fawkes. Whom seemed determined to burrow into his chest.
"I missed you too Fawkes," Harry laughed out as he spun round. Fawkes pulled his head from his chest making eye contact with Harry. Lightly giving his mental defenses a the equivalent of a knock.
"Sorry Fawkes," Feeling slightly foolish, Harry hastily lower the defenses around his mind. He had forgotten to lower them after escaping Mile and Claude earlier that day. A barrage of mental images assaulted his mind as Fawkes escaped his hug to move onto his shoulder, leaning on his head liberally.
It was Fawkes way of communicating. Not so much words as emotions and impressions, and pictures. While not as precise as words, it had an intimacy about it that was hard compare. Right now, Harry was mainly feeling overwhelming happiness and relief, with undertones of sadness. A sad scene of Fawkes leaving the mountains on earth many years ago, to searching the camp for him when the first humans arrived on Pandora. Then finishing with Fawkes crashing into him.
"Sorry I took so long mate," Harry said scratching Fawkes's head in a familiar way. "It was hard to find a ticket here, almost everyone on Earth wants to come."
Looking around Harry took stock of his surroundings. He was on a flat clearing of stone on a cliff, the clouds dark grey and rolling spread out as far as the eye could see below. Other large stone formations jutted out of the clouds in random intervals with thick green tops of vegetation. Vines and foliage as wide as a house seeming to connect all the structures like ropes spanning miles apart, some vines disappearing below the clouds.
The sky was alien, the gas giant Pandora orbited was off in the distance next to the sun. Another of its moons smaller than the rest, was on the far side of the horizon. Undeniably no longer on Earth, undeniably beautiful. It was the best welcome, Pandora had given Harry. Behind him a shear cliff face rose straight up more than a mile with a large cave opening at its base. A waterfall rumbled off the far edge of the clearing appearing to just fall endlessly. He imagined the top of this mountain was covered with trees and moss like the others he could see in the Plateau Harry stood on had to be large as a city block, and even still it appeared to only be a small ledge of the whole formation.
Fawkes bunting him with his head, demanding his attention disrupted his musing.
"Where are we Fawkes?" Harry said, exploring the plateau in front the cave. Images flashed before his eyes. "The hallelujah mountains, eh?"
Relief, and sadness overcame his mind. A image of a broken Hogwarts back on Earth echoed in Harry's mind. Looking at Fawkes Harry closed his mind and leaned his head into him. "I know buddy, we are all thats left. Earth will soon perish. Pandora is home now. We fight for Pandora now."
Walking to the edge of the ledge, Harry sat down with his blue feet dangling over the edge. Fawkes moved to his lap, looking out at the grey sea of clouds and floating mountains peaking out. For a time they just let their minds wander to what they had lost, taking solace in each others company. Sharing years of memories and catching each other up on their adventures. Slowly a firm resolve began to form, a contagious thought, and acceptance of a new home. Harry and Fawkes could not ignore the facts, their new home had a cancer. Earths problems had followed them here, and the peaceful indigenous population was poorly prepared to deal with the destructive power of the humans. This time they would strike, root them out, and protect their new home. They would not move again, they would not fail.
"This means humans extinction, and I will be the hand that delivers the blow. I fought Voldemort to protect human life, and now a century and a half later I will be the one to end it." Harry said out loud to Fawkes, sighing as he realized there was .
"Alright, Fawkes you should take me back soon. I'm sure Grace is having a seizure. Why did you bring me here?" Harry finally asked, stroking Fawkes's head marveling at the healthy condition his feathers were in. Fawkes had a burning day recently, it would appear the new planets atmosphere agreed with him.
Taking off from his lap Fawkes landed back on the plateau, flopping flat on the stone, pressing his face to it, wings spread wide. Through their connection Fawkes encouraged him to do the same. "What are you playing at?" Harry asked skeptically, earning an undignified squawk from Fawkes.
"No I'm not doing it too," Harry said walking over to him. A sense of frustration flooded his thoughts as Fawkes lifted his head to only to flop his head again.
"Alright, you win. I'll play." Laying on his stomach, Harry pressed his cheek to stone so he could still see Fawkes.
"Its warm Fawkes, and tingly." Harry said starting to understand, as Fawkes satisfaction bled through their connection. It was the unmistakable thrum of energy. "The mountains are unobtainium. That's magic I feel isn't it?"
It was unmistakable, it was intoxicating. The shear amount of magic energy seeping out of the mountain was breathtaking. Not quite like the caves underwater because the radiation had open sky to dissipate in but still invigorating. Its how the mountains floated, Harry began to piece together the information. Solid chucks of unobtainium, floating in the sky. "Oh how have the RDA not realized this yet? Detection devices, and gadgets wouldn't work up here, too much saturation of magic."
Fawkes disgust was clear as he snorted. Pointing with a wing towards the cave Harry, Fawkes shot him an image of Grimmauld number 12.
"A new Base your thinking." Spinning around Harry couldn't help but smile, not a base. "This will be our new home."
Walking at a quick pace towards the cave, Harry triggered his holster, smiling as his wand slid into his hand. "Should we see if this cave has monsters? I've been itching to stretch my new core."
"Expecto Patronum!" Harry shouted pointing his wand, exhilarated as he felt the magic surge from him to do his bidding. A blinding flash of white light obscured his vision, his wand bucking upwards slightly from the power. Smiling Harry strode towards the patronus. "Its good to see you again dad, its good to see some things don't change."
~QM~
To say things were chaotic when Harry returned with Fawkes would be an understatement. It was late afternoon when Harry and Fawkes reappeared in blast of flame. Fawkes had taken Harry straight to Hometree. The central space is dominated by the skull of some enormous creature, mounted with much embellishment on a totem. By the light of the cook-fires, Harry can see the cylindrical gallery that appeared to run up the center of the tree.
Grace slammed into him like a ton of bricks. "Barney you basterd where have you been.." Whatever Grace was going to say was drown out by numerous Na'vi shouting incomprehensibly at him.
Many bows, and spears were held at the ready by numerous warriors. Mutters of 'demons', and 'alien' were being shouted by the frightened warriors. Harry couldn't help but chuckle as Grace's faced drop as she realized their predicament.
"Calm! Brothers and Sisters!" A deep voice called out, a female Na'vi pulled herself into the center of the circle of warriors. She was richly dressed compared to the other women of the tribe, Harry guessed nobility of some sort. "Calm Omaticaya."
The Na'vi slowly lowered their weapons and quieted, Harry was impressed by the amazing weight the woman had with the people.
"My name is Mo'at, I am Tsahik. Eytukan the clan leader is out with a hunting party." She began, catching Harry with an intense stare. Turning her back she addressed the crowd. "This is a blessing from Eywa, there is nothing to fear. Many times the Red Songbird has proven its virtue. See how it rests comfortably with this sky person."
Slowly bows and spears were lowered, the people relaxing into neutral stances.
"What is your name?" Mo'at asks, turning back towards Harry.
"Barney." Harry answered firmly, relieved by her assistance. The Tsahik held great sway in the tribe as the one who interpreted the will of their god Eywa.
"Barney, we have much to discuss." Turning to the crowd she raised her voice. "Stoke the cook fires! Tonight we feast, and welcome our new teachers. Our great mother gives her blessing. This is a good sign. We have nothing to fear from Barney."
The crowd cheered, breaking up and scattering in various direction.
"If you will follow me, Barney, Grace and Evaline." Mo'at instructed, more an order than a question. Leading the group up a spiraling staircase that seemed to go up an unmeasurable distance the group came to a small a clove a short ways up.
Sitting cross legged, Mo'at motioned for the group to join them. "Please sit, we must talk. We will not be disturbed here, this is private place for prayers to Eywa for those too sick to travel."
"Thank you Mo'at," Grace began as she sat.
"Barney," Mo'at began ignoring Grace. "Where did the Red Songbird take you?"
Harry barely suppressed a chuckle as Fawkes shuffled sheepishly on his shoulder. 'Been Showing off have we?' Harry thought through their connection, smiling as Fawkes took a sudden interest in some feathers on his wing. Deciding a half truth would be best Harry began, "To the Floating Mountains Mo'at, I know not for what purpose."
Mo'at did not respond immediately staring into Harry's eyes with an immeasurable look on her face. Holding out an arm, Fawkes happily fluttered to rest upon it. Stroking Fawkes tenderly she began in a low whisper. "This is not the first time this has happened. My first daughter, when she was young, decided to go hunting on her own feeling she was ready. She was too little however, and took a tumble off a cliff, severely cutting her leg. It was already late evening when I was informed she was missing. The Red Songbird was there when I was told she was missing. It was then, it burst into flame as it did today, reappearing shortly after with my beloved Slewyin. The cut was deep and she had lost much blood. Before I could tend to the wounds the Red Songbird cried into the cut."
Glancing away from Mo'at Harry looked at Fawkes, then at Grace who still looked confused. Mo'at continued staring into Harry's eyes. "The wound healed as the tears landed, almost instantly. Only seconds after, a thin scar remained. Healed. This bird is a gift from Eywa. My mate and I decided to keep Slewyin's story quiet, fearful of fate of the Red Songbird should the other tribes find out of its healing power. Even the Na'vi would fight over such a gift. It appears the bird took you a great distance, with no harm and back." Harry could only nod, it didn't seem right to interrupt.
"The Na'vi do not trust the sky people, this is true." Mo'at stood passing Fawkes back to Harry. "Yet, the Red Songbird trusts you. This gives me great hope, I will be watching you Barney."
"This feast will begin shortly, I must go find my daughters." Mo'at finished dismissing them, leaving back the way came not waiting for them to catch up.
The trio sat in silence for a couple minutes, Grace staring intensely at the bird. "Did it really take you to the Hallelujah Mountains?"
"Yes. High above the clouds. Quite the spectacular view." Harry responded honestly.
"How did the fire not burn you?" Evaline asked, reaching over to grab his hand.
"Yes, how are you still alive?" Grace demanded.
" Just lucky I guess," Harry said with a chuckle, deciding to throw Grace a bone. "It was almost instantaneous, warm but, not uncomfortable."
" Just bloody great. Nothing science can explain." Grace muttered, standing she turned to harry appraising him. " Barney, Evaline, this never happened. If the RDA gets wind of this only two things will happen. Our department will be discredited, or they will try to catch a sacred bird to dissect and learn how to teleport. Barney after the feast tonight you and I are having a long off record talk about this bird."
"A Date?" Harry said trying to lighten the mood.
"Shut up Barney."

Day:15
The next morning saw Harry teaching the Na'vi English. The Class was predominately children, but there were several adults in his class who attended the English portions. The most notable were the Two teenagers of Mo'at and Eytukan, Neytiri and Slewyin. It now made sense why Claude Davis had approached him the day before to tell a fake version of RDA's history. These two young women would someday hold much power within the tribe.
The school was a quaint little structure on the very edge of the village. It was a large wicker house with big open windows. It had a simple chalk board on the one wall, and various pictures of Earth in sealed frames on the walls. A large teachers desk sat off to the left side of the board. The students sat on the floor and chatted quietly - they were practicing the phases Harry had up on the board for them. It appeared that despite the Na'vi and RDA's efforts the class wasn't overly popular. Less than a dozen students gathered on the mats in front of him.
Harry was tired, Grace had kept him up late after the small feast. They had gone over in painful detail all his observations of how the travel with Fawkes had felt, sensations, impossibilities despite the obvious evidence.
The class had been working through Robin Hood together. It had always been a favorite of Harry's and he had figured why not give them something fun.
"Barney, what is hero?" Neytiri asked suddenly, startling Harry who had been lost in his musings.
"A who?" Harry asked less than eloquently, walking over to where Neytiri and Slewyin sat. They sat among a group of three males, similar in age to themselves, all on the brink of adult hood. They were Nikiro, Ralu, and Entu. At the feast Harry had learned that Neytiri had achieved her status as hunter just the past year. They all listened intently, it appeared they had chosen Neytiri as spokes person.
Pointing at the board, Neytiri tried again in broken English, struggling through the sentence. "The hero saved the day. What is hero?"
Switching from English to Na'vi Harry sat down on the edge of his desk carefully. He was still getting use to the tail. "A hero is one of the people, a man or woman, who is good and inspires the people. Usually accomplishing some mighty feat no one thought possible."
Neytiri looked away in thought. "Like Toruk Makto?"
"Like Toruk Makto." Harry Agreed. "A hero is a leader with a strong heart. No fear. Last shadow is mighty opponent, yet a bond was made when none thought it possible."
"A strong heart." Neytiri repeated making eye contact, her gaze intense.
"No fear." Harry finished, driving the point home.
"Is Robin not bad because he takes what is not his?" Ralu asked, leaning back confused. Ralu was the largest of the students, big for even Na'vi standards. Harry imagined he would be a fierce warrior someday.
"Robin never kept it for himself, he shared generously with those who needed it most. The people he stole it from, had gained the wealth by stealing it from those who could not defend themselves." Harry said, crossing his arms struggling for words. "Robin stood up for the people, against those who would take advantage of them. Protected them from greed, from people who take what does not belong to them. Gave back what was stolen. Robin had the strength to protect those who could protect themselves."
"How did Robin know when he needed to act?" Entu asked, glancing out the window.
"When his people could take no more. When the injustice became to great." Harry said tiredly, realizing he had the whole classes attention. "When it seemed like no one else could help. That is when a hero is born."

Richard Cain Pov a.k.a Doc
Richard was mentally berating himself, he should be inside his barrack with his squad getting ready for bed. Not freezing his ass off in a guard tower on Hell's Gates perimeter. How was he supposed to know his superior officer would take offense to Richard simply asking if his parents were related. Some people were so touchy.
Worth it, Richard couldn't help but think. Even if it meant he was staffing a heavy machine gun on the perimeter. The guard tower was not much bigger than a couple hot dog stands, but the RDA had squeezed a massive machine gun, a table and a bunk up into the tight quarters.
It wasn't all bad, Richard had company. A young Medic David Nelson was with him this evening. David was cleaning his gun on the table staring out into the surrounding forest. The man had been posted guard duty after his squad had been all but wiped out a couple days earlier. More dead, marines. All Richard wanted to do was finish his shift, and get back to Earth alive, back to his wife. Only five months one week left.
"I don't think I'm going to make it Doc." David states sombrely, bringing Richard back to the present.
Taking a second to glance at the kid Richard shakes his head, "And why would you say something dumb like that?"
"My last mission." David responds quickly. "Its not the men we lost, I've been through a war before. I've lost friends but, that's the job."
"Then what has your panties in a bunch?" Richard tried again, playing with the belt of rounds that fed into the gun. Each bullet was as long as his hand. Making a show of pulling off his mic, and transmitter. David continued to unplug the mic and pull the battery from the transmitter putting it on the table. Motioning for Richard to the same. The action made Richard uneasy to say the least, but he disassembled his radio as well.
"I'm not suppose to tell anyone but, I can't shake the feeling since the mission that I'm being watched." David began to ramble picking up speed.
"Then you shouldn't tell me," Richard cut him off, putting the belt down and turning to David at the table. "You know the RDA has bugs everywhere, especially if your being watched."
"They won't work in the rain, I'm going nutty as is with the rain pounding off the roof." David dismisses immediately, not denying the fact of the bugs. "This may be my only chance unsupervised to tell someone."
Thinking over Richard decides to hear him out, but if David asked him to put on a tinfoil hat he was drawing the line. "Alright, what happened you last mission?"
Standing David began to pace back and forth in the small watchtower, running his hands over his close shaved head. When he finally started, David was rushing through, spitting out words as fast as his mouth would let him.
"You can't tell anyone. We were supervising an Ore truck, and it broke down. Once the truck went down the convoy just carried on with out us, no amp suits dropped back, no scorpion gunship nothing. Within moments we were fully engaged in a skirmish with the Na'vi. I lost five." David trailed off getting a haunted look in his eyes. "New neuro toxin, nothing I could do. The crazy thing was the truck never broke down. It was sabotaged."
"Sabotage," Richard muttered subconsciously, taking a second to process the barrage of information. "How? Who?"
"How is easy. A controlled detonation on the driveshaft of the ore truck, cut clean through. It was supposed to cut in two places but the wiring on the second charge shook loose on the drive. We found the explosive once the fight was over, it was poorly mixed. Who is a bit harder."
"An amateur?" I interjected cause him to stop pacing thankfully. "The bad wiring and poorly made explosive screams amateur."
David stopped, grabbing the chair from the table and pulling it right next to Richard's gun seat. "See that's just what Colonel Quartrich said, that it was possible a sympathetic tree hugger group that got people on Pandora."
"But you don't agree?" Richard more stated than asked. "Colonel Quaritch was on the mission?"
"Yes, it was only his second mission out since he has been here. A good Commander, probably the only reason anyone made it through the ambush." David explained leaning back in his chair, before sighing slumping forward onto his hands his elbows resting on his knees. " No I don't agree. Quaritch was the one who suspected something was wrong. While we waited for the others to search, he confessed the other possible saboteur could be the RDA."
If Richard was shocked before, it had nothing on this. "The RDA. Why?"
"I don't know why, but it feels wrong. Why haven't we heard about the incident in the camp news that there was a sabotage, not even in debriefing the next day was it addressed. All that was said was the truck broke down, and note of the men being killed. The other amp suits never dropped back, the gunships were delayed. The distress call was not logged. If its the RDA, we are all dead. They are going to clean us up, I'm not sure what is going on but the RDA does not leave loose ends."
"Woah David, slow down there. Lets not jump to conclusions." Richard interrupted, raising his hands. "There's no motive, what does the RDA gain by killing you? They brought you light years out in to space. If they did miss killing you the first time you'd already be dead. Lets work the problem."
Leaning back again David crossed his arms defensively. "Why didn't we get support then? Why did the convoy's escort just carry on? Why did the scorpions take so long to get to us?"
"Awe common David you know how the coms get in the rains here. Its like when were in the flux, nothing but the long range gets through." Richard tries to calm David, who is getting visibly angrier.
"Well, if not RDA then why didn't they announce it to the camp."
Fair point Richard had to admit. "Maybe the RDA suspect someone, didn't want to alert them."
This stops David cold in his tracks, a blank stare overtaking his features before he breaks out in a broad smile. "Of course, the terrorist group would be getting the same news we do! It would let them know they were coming, and they'd disappear like smoke."
"Best let the group expose more of its members before dropping the axe." Richard agreed, this seemed much more plausible.
"Probably, from the bloody Science sector of operations, the whole lot of them seem like tree huggers." David finishes standing excitedly, pulling his chair back to his gun at the table he was reassembling.
Richard's mind was reeling however, of course it'd be from the science section. He had to talk to Barney. A cull was coming, who he associated with could mean life or death for him. Schooling his features, Richard started putting his radio together, walking over to David who was still smiling slapping him on his back. " See not so bad, kinda boring when your employers aren't trying to kill you, eh?"

Day: 18
Harry's POV
It had been a challenging but rewarding couple days at the village teaching. The older students, were already surprisingly progressed in their English. Slewyin was by far the most advanced. Harry had a chance to talk to her at the end of a class. Slewyin was curious why Fawkes had taken to him in such a way. Fawkes had taken to watching the class as he taught, it gave Harry a warm feeling. Reminding him of the days when he used to teach at Hogwarts. Slewyin was to be the next Tsahik, taking over from her mother when she was ready.
Time not spent teaching, Harry spent watching the villagers, and exploring Hometree. Harry had been watching for accidental magic, any signs that the Na'vi population was magical. In honesty, it had been rather disappointing so far. It would seem due to the much higher levels of radiation on Pandora - or perhaps the species being exposed to magical radiation for a longer period of time - that the effect on the Na'vi species was more passive. Much like a dragon, or a chimera. While they could do no magic of their own by command that Harry had seen so far, their physical features were greatly enhanced, bone strength, endurance, immune system. There was very little conscious magic, other than Mo'at who appear to be a Aura reader of sorts as far as Harry could tell. Being fair though, it was only later in his life he had become a researcher, it was never really his talent. Harry became a researcher when wizard kind needed him to be researcher. In honesty, he was more a guns blazing think later type. It was possible something later on would show up, it was too soon to tell.
At the moment, Harry was working on a project unrelated to Pandora's survival. Although in retrospect, a happier and more focused Harry might help ensure Pandora's survival. When Earth's food wars began and plant species started disappearing the real tragedy in his opinion was the disappearance of tea. Harry hated coffee, but once tea had disappeared there was little choice. The dream was to find something reminiscent of an Earl grey, but Harry supposed even a peppermint would be a victory.
"Smells good," Harry muttered holding a purple fruit about the size of a softball. He was kneeling between two rows of some sort of fruit tree in the mud, and it was lightly drizzling. The storm had yet to end, although, it had lightened up dramatically the last couple days.
"First attempt purple ball thing." Harry finished, holding the fruit at eye level.
A laughing Avatar approaching him interrupted the next ground breaking observation in the tea project Harry was about to say. "Purple Ball thing, shouldn't you know its name?" René Harper asked as he reached Harry, kneeling down with him to inspect the fruit. To say René was oddly dressed was an understatement in Harry's mind. The Avatar was wearing rubber boots, wool sweats, and fishing vest covered in a variety of brightly colored hooks, and flies. A fishing hat, with corks dangling just above eye level sat upon his blue head.
"I ain't no botanist. René, I thought you were still out on the coast?" Harry asked genuinely surprised, it had sounded like he had lots of work when Grace went off on him the other morning.
"Finished it off yesterday. Submitted the research this morning. It'll take her months to go through all my data. I'm likely to be here a couple weeks till she does." René dismissed his concerns, picking up his own purple fruit taking a bite. "What are you trying to do here?"
Harry stood shrugging, still distracted by the corks on René's weird hat. "Find something that is easy to drink steeped in water."
"Isn't there a couple tea machines on base that already do that? Beep. Beep. Boop. Press a couple buttons and it makes you any of a hundred flavors?" René tossing the core of the fruit over his shoulder.
"You mean that synthetic nasty juice." Harry said childishly making René laugh. Tucking a couple more of the purple fruit into his satchel, Harry stood finally giving René his full attention. "And what can I help you with René?"
"I overheard your discussion with Claude Davis, I was impressed how you stood up to him." René said offhandedly, playing with the collar of his sleeve.
"Claude wanted me to brainwash children. Condition their minds to be more accepting of the RDA. I never even considered it." Harry responded tiredly, at some point he was sure he would experience fallout from his refusal.
"Even if its only Na'vi children?" René asks, his eyes boring into Harry's intensely as he wait for his answer.
"They are children, I will always protect children. Na'vi or not." Harry responds resolutely, crossing his arms trying to figure out René was playing at.
"Do you support what the RDA is doing here Barney? Should we be here?"
Harry studied René's face. It was a loaded question, not one that should be spoken aloud. Questioning the RDA was a sure fire way to get in trouble. "What do you want René?"
"Do you think we should be here?" René repeated himself, he appeared calm to Harry, only his tail flipping back and forth betrayed his anticipation.
"I'm unsure, it doesn't seem the Na'vi want us here." Harry stalled, debating how much he should tell René about his feelings.
Thankfully Harry never had too elaborate, René jumped in eagerly. "Barney did you watch many movies back on Earth?"
Truthfully, the new direction caught Harry off guard. For a couple seconds Harry just started at the man. Maybe there was more to people calling René crazy than Harry thought. Closing his mouth with a snap, Harry answered honestly. "Yeah, I watched some movies."
"Did you watch many movies about aliens? Humans immortalized stories of an advanced race of aliens that arrives at our home planet. Aliens that bring with them technology we can never hope to match. Why did the aliens come to Earth Barney?" René asks, his eyes alight with manic energy.
"Resources." Harry whispers, knowing where René is going with this now.
"Exactly Barney, Resources. The aliens always come to harvest our resources. Their success means the extinction of Earth. Why are we so good at writing these movies why do we fear this outcome? Why? Because its what humans would do."
"Look at this place," René gestures to the RDA complex spinning in a circle with his arms spread wide, his feet sloshing in the mud. Harry takes advantage of René's turned back to snap his wand out of his holster.
"Muffliato." Harry whispered quickly, sliding his wand back into his holster. The whole movement takes less than a second. René's words are practically treason as far as the RDA is concerned, its best they are not over heard.
"Who do you think we are in this story? Its what we are doing right now. WE ARE the bad guys in this one. Humans are here to take what we want, and we don't care how. Even if we have to kill the locals to get it. Humans are the parasite, we are the monsters who are harvesting Pandora. Wielding weapons they cannot hope to understand or match. Have humans shown an ability to go beyond their baser emotions of greed and hate? Have humans been able to achieve peace? Humans destroyed our Earth during our last wars, depleted our resources, and now we've come to Pandora to do the same. So I'll ask again Barney, should humans be here?"
Harry already knew where he stood. He had already pledged he would defend the Na'vi. That he would repel the humans. Harry would see to the Humans extinction before he allowed them to destroy Pandora, even if it cost him his life.
Harry was no stranger to secret organizations, and secret resistance movements. He had been the youngest member of the Order of the Phoenix, and Leader of Dumbledore's Army. This was not just some simple debate, Harry was being recruited, René was dangerous, he could feel the blue hairs on his arm standing up."No, its not right."
"I have some friends I would like you to meet Barney. There is something bigger than a simple mining operation going on here. People are going missing, people who never existed on base. There are Na'vi going missing with no trace from the villages.
Its time for the end of the movie, the turn of the tide, its time for the aliens to be destroyed. Otherwise the wildlife, the trees, the Na'vi will all perish."
René stares at Harry as he waits for his answer, his corks swaying slightly on his hat. The magic readily obeys Harry as he reaches into René's thoughts, entering his mind as he holds eye contact. René's surface thoughts are just as wild as Harry predicted, the man's anger his own species clear in his mind. A single impression, forms as Harry sifts through the anger into one coherent word.
Rebellion.
"Barney!" A voice rings out further down the garden, saving Harry from answering René. René tensed immediately, spinning on the spot, a hand flying to a pocket inside his fishing vest.
Smiling Harry Greets his savior, releasing the magic sustaining his silencing spell. "Evaline! I see you escaped Grace." Evaline is sprinting down the row towards him, closing at an alarming rate. Even in an Avatar Harry must admit to himself that she quite the looker, with long slender legs. She was wearing a tight pair of sweats, and baggy Raincoat that had Avatar program stenciled on the front. Evaline's Avatar had a single blond streak through her dark black hair. An oddity Harry hadn't seen in any other Na'vi he had met with so far. Harry stepped in front of René to intercept Evaline, uncomfortable with what he suspected as a pistol in René's fishing vest.
Skidding in the mud to slow down, Evaline slid into Harry giving him a firm hug. Her tail wrapped around his leg by his ankle like an extra arm, as she held him. Giggling she released him, "Barely, Grace roped me into helping her make slides of her new tissue samples of Hometree she collected. She was grabbing another case when I made my escape to a link, it feels good to stretch these legs."
Glancing over his shoulder at Rene, Harry is relieved to see him standing calmly. Stepping around him, Evaline greets René warmly who still looks uncomfortable. "René! You look ready to go fishing! When did you get back from the coast?"
"Evaline its good to see you," He responds more calmly, slipping his hand back out of his vest to shake her hand. "Sadly no fishing today, just enjoying sometime in my Avatar. I got back yesterday, finished up my research."
"That's exciting! Grace will be happy!" Evaline responds pleasantly.
"I hope so," René says tiredly. "Well, I must be off. Data to crunch, the work never ends. We'll continue this later Barney. Evaline."
Stepping around them both, René rushes off before Harry can respond, his rubber boots slopping in the mud.
Watching René's retreating form, Evaline cocks her head slightly as she watches him go. "What did he want?"
"I'm not sure." Harry lies smoothly, smiling as her beautiful violet eyes find his, immensely glad the color was the same with her Avatar as it was with her human body. It was still one of his favorite features of her.
~QM~
It was almost midnight, Harry was back in his human body laying on the ceiling of an empty hallway invisible. It was easier to avoid being bumped into than on the floor. He was tapping his wand impatiently against his leg, stakeouts were not one of his favorite things. Harry had seen in René's thoughts earlier that morning in the Avatar garden that his little resistance had a meeting tonight. He was waiting for René to sneak out to go to headquarters. Harry figured any self respecting rebellion would have one. He would be disappointed if they met an empty office or something. Tonight, Harry would attend their meeting invisible, to see what the group was about before he decided if he would help them.
The week at Hometree had been a boon for his magic. Each night Harry and Fawkes would escape to floating mountains plan on their new home, exploring deeper into the cave in the clearing. The close proximity to unobtainium was exhilarating and kind of intoxicating over long periods of time. While strength had really only marginally increased with his new Avatar body, his recovery had improved dramatically. The Avatar core seem to recharge faster with the abundant magical energy on Pandora. Decreasing how long he felt exhausted between spells, and increasing the amount of powerful ones he could cast quickly. By the end of Harry's week stay at Hometree, the umbilical transfer of energy between his Na'vi body and human had finished. Harry's human self felt alive once more, fully charged magically. It was now time to get to work, which meant gathering intelligence, and unfortunately stakeouts Harry thought bitterly.
Just as Harry thought the boredom was going to kill him, René's door slowly slid open. Rene was dressed in all black combats, a startling change from the fisherman Harry had seen earlier. Amateur Harry thought comically - who wore all black combats - why not just scream to everyone your up to no good. René stepped out into the hallway slowly, listening for movement. Seeming satisfied, he took off left down the hallway, Harry following with silenced steps on the ceiling.
Seven lefts, four rights, five flights of stairs brought Harry all the way to an obscure passage somewhere between the cafeteria, and the dorms as far as he could figure. Large stainless steel panels covered the walls in seamless chunks, giving the passage a very sterile feeling. Stopping at a seemingly random wall panel that covered the wall from foot to ceiling, René pulled a small square black brick out of his pocket placing it against the surface of the wall by his foot on the right hand side. Pulling lightly on the brick, Harry was surprise to see the panel pull away as well, revealing a tight tall passage appear barely wide enough for a person between large pipes and electrical. Pulling the brick off the door with a soft clang, René disappeared into the passage, pulling the door closed behind him with a snap.
"Magnetic locks eh," Harry muttered silently having silenced himself. Running a hand down the wall panel, still hanging from the ceiling. Waiting a second to make sure René was away from the door, Harry waved his wand at the door, first applying a nonverbal silencing charm. Continuing Harry cast an alhomora at the door, chuckling silently when it popped open a couple inches. "Locks meet magic."
Opening it fully Harry walked on the roof into the passage closing it behind himself. Not a moment too soon as loud footsteps could be heard sprinting his way. Throwing himself flat to the ceiling, Harry watched as René sprinted to inspect the door, a assault rifle pointed out ahead of himself. Two men followed on René's heels, each with their own weapons. Skidding to a halt under Harry he stopped, inspecting the locked door.
"Just a false alarm guys, doors closed. It probably didn't make proper contact as I closed it." René whispered lowering his gun best he could in passage. "False alarm guys, were good."
René's friends looked relieved as they turned around, heading back down the passage. Standing back up Harry followed the trio, cursing himself for being so sloppy. It appeared to be some sort of dead space between the two rooms, a service entry perhaps. Harry walked for about 300 yards down the endlessly straight passage, before it abruptly ended. A rickety wooden ladder was hanging on the wall, leading up to a hatch on the ceiling.
Dropping back onto his stomach Harry crawled along the ceiling above their heads, as they waited for the first guy to open the hatch. Stopping just by the hatch Harry allowed the guy to open it fully, before silently throwing a tripping charm at him.
The man slipped hard, missing the rung he was climbing falling back onto the second guy who was climbing after him. In a pile of tangled limbs they landed at the bottom, allowing Harry to slip into the attic unimpeded.
As far as secret hideouts went, Harry immediately ranked this among the worst three he'd seen as he floated up to the new ceiling. The room was maybe three cars wide and only a couple cars long. A sloped roof was barely 8 feet on the high side, dropping off to less than four on the far side, dramatically reducing the usable space. Exposed rafters, electrical, and piping hung on the walls, cluttering the space. On the low walls four bunks were along the floor, a small kitchenette, and table were over on the far side. A map was up on the tall wall, pins and writing littered its surface. An old school radio sat on a desk below it.
"Dammit Reggie, you dam near crushed me with your fat ass." A brutish man complained in low voice hanging his combat vest on the wall, leaning his gun up below it. Must not be that soundproof Harry mused. " A ladder to much a challenge for you fly boy?"
"Shut it Chis. Its a tight hallway, tough in the gear." René stopped the argument before it could begin, likewise hanging his gear. Laying back on the ceiling, Harry pulled himself back over a rafter to lay above the table. "Alright, lets get to it, we don't have much time tonight."
Grabbing three coffee from the kitchenette, the brute Chris wandered over to the table. Taking special care to roughly drop the last cup in front of the man Harry tripped, slopping a bit on whom Harry assumed was Reggie.
Reggie hissed quietly as the coffee burned him, "aaaggh. Fuck off Chris! I said sorry."
"Enough." René said in a low threat, placing his hands on the table palms down. "No Miranda tonight Chris?"
"No, she got a late shift on the coms wasn't able to trade." Chris replied, leaning back with his arms behind his head.
"Did she say if she was able to get the shift next week?" René asked rubbing his hands.
"She was able, her team is go for operation Titanic." Harry groaned at the lame code name as Chris replied.
"Excellent, and your crew Chris?" René eagerly standing to walk over too the map.
"Also go, my guys are ready. Where you able to get your baking done?" Chris replied bored, taking a sip of his coffee.
"Yes, thankfully. 25 more pounds than we expected. Grace has been on my ass again. I handed in my research today, the data is so convoluted it'll take them a couple months to realize its crap. Meaning we have only a little bit of time left out at the coast link to prepare before I am shutdown." René sighs, coming back to the table. "I placed it in its usual spot for your guys to pick up."
Silence dominated as the crew exchanged glances. It was Reggie who broke the silence, "I guess that leave nothing left but to do it, the sooner the better. Are you sure this one isn't too far René?"
"I'm sure," René responded immediately. "Anything new on the broad wave radio?"
"Same stuff mostly, just broken sentences, little words. We are aren't getting any closer, Miranda thinks we will never break it." Chris responds walking over the radio grabbing a sheet of paper. "These are the new lines of code from today."
Grabbing the sheet, Rene leans over the new lines on the table. Straining Harry isn't able to make out much, just seemingly random letters grouped together in apparently the language jargon. "Are we sure its not an enigma code machine?"
"Its not or we would have broken it by now, this is something different. In the last three years we've only managed to decode three snippets. 'Going to hell' being the first, 'Recruiting of volunteers' the second and frankly we have no clue for what. I think we should abandon it." Chris states firmly staring at René, "Its not worth our time."
"We must keep trying, the RDA is up to something. This code we are intercepting is our only chance." René responds firmly pushing the lines back across the table.
"Fine, but I think its a waste of time." Chris responds curtly. "How did your talk with the new driver go?"
"Poorly, we got interrupted before I could finish. I'm not sure I'll be able to try again before operation Titanic wraps up, but I think he's on Pandora's side. I'll observe for now." René sighs, leaning back in his chair.
"I think its best we call it a night," Chris states checking his watch.
"Yes, we should go." Rene agrees, tiredly running a hand over his face. " Titanic is go in one week. Prepare your teams, no meeting until after the operation is finished. Remember why we fight."
"Pandorian Aboriginal Life Survival!" Chris and Reggie responded immediately standing up, giving René a rough salute before heading to their gear by the door.
"Good luck, Pals, Watch your step."René said quietly, finishing his cup of coffee as he headed to the kitchen.
Harry couldn't help but laugh up on the ceiling, as the trio started cleaning up and prepping to leave below him. PALS? Hermione spirit, was probably laughing at him somewhere. It was almost as bad as SPEW. Focusing up Harry pulled himself back over to the hatch to wait for his chance to exit. "Operation Titanic, what are you planning René?"
