Disclaimer: I do not own How to Train Your Dragon or Brave nor do own any of the character.
Since it is my first crossover I would love feedback.
This is set after Merida and Hiccup have both experienced their own adventures-movie plots-. Merida is fifteen and Hiccup is sixteen.
Also I am sorry but I am bad at accents so Merida does have an accent that everyone notices and will comment on, but I will not be writing like she does, its just to difficult for me, so I apologize in advance.

Since the witch in Brave was never names and the Pixar theory claims the witch is Boo, I named the witch Boo
Sorry it took so long school has been killer.
Merida point of view
Just like I expected Toothless took off like a demon from hell. He leaped and I leaned in as close as I could to his back trying my best to mold myself to him. From the corner of my eye I could see the boy's dragon behind us moving more like a snake the way it slithered.
Not wanting to be caught off guard I looked back in front of me, watching the track. There was a turn up ahead and right as Toothless started to turn himself I leaned with him. Although we completely the turn we were to wide enough to allow the Nightmare to glide forward. 'That little cheater he's gliding,' I thought and based on the growl coming from Toothless, he also knew that the boy was cheating.
"Come on Toothless no holding back." I whispered "I don't want to loss to that lad anymore than you do." Toothless hissed in agreement and before I knew it took off. The dragon in front of us was moving back and fourth not allowing us to take the lead.
"Toothless the rim climb the rim" I whisper noticing that the next turn had a wall of compacted dirt, probably so that the dragons would be forced to turn. Toothless tensed his muscles and leaped onto the rim, the wall crumbling a bit from our weight. "Big leap" I muttered looking down at the Nightmare below us, the lad glaring at me. I felt the push off and did my best to sit straight leaning forward on the saddle raising myself a bit taking the same position I would when Angus leapt over a log.
Toothless landed with a stomp, but wasted no time taking the lead. Riding a dragon was definitely different than riding a horse or even a bear. Bears aren't as fast as horses or even dragon, but their strives were powerful and you could feel every move they made. A horse can have speed and well trained the ride at full speed will fell minimum. However on a dragon even when you can hear them hitting the ground you can only somewhat feel the impact what you feel is the speed the wind passing behind you, to me it was almost like flying. 'If riding is this amazing I can't wait to see what flying feels like.' I thought, pushing myself closer to the front of the saddle.
The race wasn't even close. The Nightmare was bigger and probably stealthier, but Toothless was smaller faster. For most of the race Toothless and I were in the lead. Just as we saw the end, I could see everyone waiting for us at the finish line, some were cheering, but I couldn't exactly make it out with the wind in my face. "Come on Toothless." I muttered noticing the dragon behind us shifting.
Something didn't feel right, but all I could focus on was the finish line. That was until the shouting got louder "MERIDA BEHIND YOU" I could hear Hiccup shout. So I looked over my shoulder and noticed the dragons mouth was open red sparks flying out of his open mouth, as something bright and hot started to form in the back of his throat. "MERIDA GET OUT OF THERE."
"Toothless" I say in a harsh whisper, pulling the head of the saddle to the right leaning as far as I could. Toothless turned and just in time as a stream of fire shot out beside me. "That little cheat" I muttered, growling. The lad speed up catching up to me, but what I wasn't expecting was the extended wing of his Nightmare. I quickly ducked his wing just barely scratching my head.
Toothless snarled and began to pick up speed, but the lad wasn't making it easy. We had to swing out to avoid wing attacks, which kept slowing us down. 'Damn it' I thought, the thought of losing to a lad like this was making my blood boil. 'Hiccup did warn me he didn't play fair' I thought, 'But than again if you play with a cheater always be ready to best them.' I thought, letting one of my hands reach for the bow slung over my shoulder. Bow in hand I gripped the saddle as I pulled an arrow. I knew how to shot off of Angus and never miss, but Toothless was moving to fast and I wasn't used to shooting this way, but hopefully I wouldn't need to.
"Toothless I need you to speed up just enough for the dragon to see us" Toothless nodded and with a burst of energy shot forward. The lad and his dragon looked at us for a moment, and taking a deep breath I let go of Toothless saddle, using all my quad strength to keep me on Toothless. I pulled back the arrow and aimed it at the boy.
The Nightmare shrieked and the boy instantly yanked on the dragon's saddle causing them to pull a hard left. The sudden movement confused the dragon and it tripped over its legs, it still screeching in terror. As Toothless began to speed up the finish line in view I quickly grabbed onto the saddle, the bow still in my hand, but the arrow slipping onto the track, but I doubt I would need it, it didn't seem like the lad wouldn't be getting up for a while.
We crossed the finish line and the student cheered their dragons roaring with them. As Toothless stopped I had to catch my breath, my heart beating wildly from the experience. It was amazing, like nothing I had ever done before, but almost getting set on fire and beat by a dragon wing definitely got a girl's adrenaline rushing. I took a deep breath placing the bow on my back, as I tried to lower my beating heart.
I watched as Hiccup rushed over to us, he was smiling, but you could tell that he was worried his face was like reading an open book. He walked to Toothless side extending his arm out to help me down. Normally I would snap exclaiming that I wouldn't need help, but I had to much adrenaline to happy about winning to even care. Hiccup had his silly grin and based on my cheeks hurting I knew I was smiling very hard.
"I did it," I whisper as he helped me off of Toothless saddle.
Hiccup nods his head "That you did" he says squeezing my hand as I make my way to the ground. "Pretty close call with that fire though I told you to be carful."
I rolled my eyes the smile still on my face "I'm alright aren't I." I watch as Crow lands on my shoulder giving me a nice nod.
He looks over me for a minute before picking up a strand of curly hair bringing it to my face. "Singed hair." He says but I just roll my eyes taking the strand out of his hand.
"Better than a burned face I suppose." Hiccup was about to say something when a loud shout and roar came behind us. We both turned to look and it seems the lad and his dragons were finally crossing the finish line.
"She cheated" he hollered his dragon roaring along with him as he dismounted his saddle.
Hiccup seemed to glare at the boy and it may have been my imagination, but I could have sworn that the boy flinched. "You cheated first, it was a race there was no use for fire."
"She point a arrow at me" the lad shouted, "at my dragon she could have killed us." Crow landed on my shoulder and started snickering because he knew just as well as I did that if I wanted the boy dead he'd be dead. "Does she even know how to use that thing I mean-" before he could finish that sentence I pulled the bow form my back and grabbed another arrow firing it at his feet, the lad jumped back and before he could protest I grabbed another arrow and began to shot the targets on the race course. It didn't matter how far they were of how crowded the board, all of my arrow made a bull's eye.
I could feel the other's eyes on my back, but I didn't care no one underestimated my ability to use a bow. Hiccup gave me a look that pretty much asked if that was necessary, and I lifted up my chin saying yes it was. Hiccup sighed turning back to the boy who was getting red in the face again, but before he could start yelling a giant blue dragon I have never seen before landed on the course. It had a giant round like body with small arms and legs, covered in blue scales with white dots, you could see its sharp teeth coming out of its mouth and riding on its back was Hiccup's father.
"What's going on?" he asks looking at between Hiccup and the lad his eyes wandering to me for a moment since I still had the bow in my hand his eyes were watching me carefully which to be fair was understandable since I did put a sword to his throat.
"Hiccup is cheating." The lad exclaimed which I sneered at, almost raising an arrow at the lad.
"He nearly set Merida on fire." Hiccup says staring dead into the lad's eyes. I watched, as this time the lad did cringe.
The lad opened his mouth to try and reply, but Stoick shouted "ENOUGH" he jumps off his dragon and marches to Hiccup and the lad, his shoulders squared back his jaw set. "Nothing happens on this island that I don't know about-" I rolled my eyes at that if he really did than he would know that I was a Scott and that Crow could really talk.
Something important must have been decided because the lad was huffing his dragon and he leaving the field, while Hiccup seemed to have a small smile on his face well at least until his father called him over to his side. I tried to read their lips to see what they were talking about, but they spoke to rapidly to read everything. 'Its something about a trip…a hunting trip…with dragons…what are they hunting that they need dragons.' I thought, Toothless nudging my side.
I watched as Hiccup nodded rolling his eyes and than nodding again. Soon his father walked back to the dragon and they both walked away. Hiccup came back to the class and exclaimed that class was over.
He gently grabbed my elbow and started leading me away. "What happened?" I asked, the bow still in my hand, Crow leaning in just as curious as me.
Hiccup bites his lip, rubbing the back of his neck "how good are you with that bow."
"The best" I say raising my eyebrow.
"How good are you at hunting" he says not looking at me.
"One of the best" I was starting to wonder where he was going with his.
"That's good to know." He paused and just kept walking.
"Hiccup" I hissed not liked being kept in the dark, but he only placed his finger to his lip before pointing to the village. I scrunched my face in distaste knowing that we wouldn't be able to talk until we reached his house. Word must have gotten around about my riding and bow skill because everyone seemed even wearier of me than before. 'So much so not bringing attention to myself' I thought 'than again a mute stranger plucked from the sea near death is bound to catch some attention on their own.' I thought, trying my best to walk straight me head held high.
Before I knew it someone was pulling on my clothes it was a little girl probably five or so. She was a small thing with blonde hair tied in three braids she was covered in mud and sopping wet. "Are you a witch?" she asks, no hesitation tugging on my clothes for an answer.
I shake my head no, but the girl just pouts tugging harder. "Yes you are you survived the frozen ocean so close to winter, you can control dragons, and you have a crow." At the mention of Crow he ruffled his feather his beak opening to talk. I quickly flicked his stomach a puff of air escaping him instead of words.
"Lillirum you can't go and ask people if their witches its rude." Says Hiccup patting the girls muddy head.
The little lass pouted further "it rude to lie to, she's a witch she has to be, its okay we're nice to witches here as long as you're a good witch. You are a good witch right." The lass smiled now getting excited with each word. I could only blink at the child.
"Come on Lillirum your moms probably wondering where you are, you know you shouldn't be out of the house." The little girl pouted, but released my pant leg.
"But if she's a witch she could help me." The girl whispered. Hiccup flinched before kneeling down and picking the girl up wet and muddy. The girl wrapped her arms around Hiccup's neck, her eyes downcast.
"Toothless take Merida home, I'll be there in a little bit." Not giving any reply Hiccup and the girl walked further into the village whispering to each other.
Toothless nudged me shaking his body. I looked at him oddly, but he nodded at me and then turned looking towards his stomach, his saddle still in place. I smiled and wasted no time jumping into the saddle. Once Toothless thought I was ready he took off towards Hiccup's house. The villages' stares and whispers left behind.
We made it to Hiccup's house in no time, but I wanted to see if I could actually shoot off the back of a dragon. So picking different spots on trees as targets I asked Toothless to keep moving. The dragon must how picked up what I wanted because he slowed down to a trot allowing me to get used to feel. Little by little he speed up and little by little I started to get the hang of it. My first few shots were off, but after some readjustment I was getting better.
"You're a natural" I hear someone say, not expecting the sharp stop I found myself flinging off of Toothless saddle falling completely over Toothless head. "Merida" I heard as I groaned. I blinked a few times to see Hiccup or rather Hiccups standing over me.
"Uhh" I groaned trying to blink away the two other images of Hiccup. I could feel someone pull me up in a sitting position.
"You all right" he asks, moving my hair out of my face.
I scoot back "I'm fine" I snapped a headache starting to form.
"Sorry" Hiccup says lowering his head "I was just impressed no ones ever gotten that good that fast." Hiccup lifted his head up a crocked smile on his face and for some odd reason my heart seemed to flutter. I gasped in surprise, Hiccups face quickly turning to worry. "You sure your alright." He didn't give me a chance to answer as he pulled me to my feet and dragged me in the house. "Toothless bring the bow" he says we walk through the door. He places me on the couch and runs into the other room.
He comes back after Toothless does bow in his mouth. He sits in front of me dropping the bow in my lap. I scratch underneath his neck and he coos. Hiccup comes in and places something cold on my head. I flinch before realizing its ice. Taking the ice covered in a rag I begin to relax. Hiccup moves to Toothless starting to undo his saddle.
The silence wasn't uncomfortable, but I found myself breaking it anyway "Who was the little lass in the village."
Hiccup doesn't look up from Toothless saddle "Her names Lillirum, she's a wild little thing."
"Should I be insulted or happy that she thinks I'm a witch?"
Hiccup flinched again, but this time he stopped working "She was born to early, and is always known to get sick, the elder says that she has a weak heart. Her mother tries to keep her in the house to make sure she's all right, but she loves climbing trees and dragons too much to stay put. We tried to put her on a dragon, but she got to excited and her heart couldn't handle it, she fainted."
"So she was hoping I could…heal her." I said, feeling sorry for the lass.
"She always prays for a better heart, she thought if you were a witch you could give her a better heart."
"Magic doesn't work that way," I say looking at my own lap. "It doesn't just fix peoples problems that easily, there is always a price." I said thinking back to Mordo and my mother.
"Merida are you…I mean you don't….that is…I just" he sighs clearly frustrated with himself.
"I'm not a witch, but I do know a thing or two about magic." Hiccups nods before taking off Toothless saddle.
Silence takes over again until I remember what I wanted to ask Hiccup. "Why were you wondering about my hunting abilities?"
Hiccup sits down on the couch next to me. "Well you see Berk doesn't have a lot of game so we travel to other islands to collect food for winter. With the dragons we can travel further and faster. We found an area full of game about a day and a half ride south from here. My father is leading the last hunting party before winter, usually I stay here and try to manage the village, but this time he wants me to go with him…"
He strays off and looks a bit nervous "so you want me to come with you." I say hopefully finishing his sentence correctly.
"You don't have to go" he says quickly "I just didn't think you'd want to be here alone you know, but if you want I can ask-"
"I'll go" I say, Hiccup silencing himself before looking at me.
"You will"
I nod "I would always go hunting with my dad, it will be fun." I say with a smile, but Hiccup just gave an awkward chuckle.
"Yah fun"
"What is it?"
"Well its just winter seems to hit that land pretty early not to mention it can be quite dangerous and its always has snow and ice, its like covered in it and-"
"And you're not good at hunting are you." Hiccup's whole face goes red.
"No" he mutters not looking at me. I only chuckle, but that seems to make it worse because his shoulders seem to drop.
"I'm not laughing at you Hiccup, its just you seem so embarrassed by it like it's the end of the world. I know lords that can't even shot and arrow let alone hunt. I know grown men that don't know how to find a simple track."
"But they aren't Vikings" is all he says as he gets up with the saddle and leaves the room.
I waited for Hiccup to come back in wondering what I could say to make him feel better, but before he did, his Father walked through the front door. A large smile on his face, as he dumped a large sack on the ground "whose ready to hunt?" He says with a smile on his face. I couldn't help, but nod a smile on my face. 'The least I could do is try to enjoy myself while I'm here.'
