"That's it?" Antares asks as Cassi and Jake get up, hand in hand, and go outside. "You get a note from Grama and mention happily ever after and you just… are?"
I smile. "Basically. Of course we've had our differences since then. Your father and I worry about our relationship if we go a week without fighting. But Bryan backed down, gossip from Elizabeth's newspaper eventually disappeared, and we made it to where we are now. We got three beautiful children. I promised I would only tell you the interesting parts, and the interesting parts are over."
"Oh," he says, sounding disappointed. "Maybe you can tell us another story sometime?"
"Maybe I will. For now, I'm going to get some dishes done. You're welcome to come help me."
"The Muggle way?"
"Of course. You're underage and Jake could come back at any time. I'll be working the Muggle way, too."
"No thanks. Muggle things suck. I'm gonna go play some video games."
"So there are some Muggle things you don't mind doing?" I say, half to myself, as he leaves the room.
In the kitchen, the sink fills with soapy water and Scorpius joins me. "The story's over then?"
"The telling is. Our story is long from over, Scor," I say, turning off the water and facing him. We kiss more passionately than the situation calls for. When I turn back around, I see Cassi and Jake sitting on the pavement outside our house, talking animatedly. "And theirs is just beginning."
"Do you think she'll tell him about being a witch?"
I look them over. Cassi is winding her unruly hair around a finger, not looking Jake in the eye. She isn't flirting. "Not yet. She's wiser than we give her credit for, I think."
"She's still three years from adulthood. She might be wiser than we give her credit for, but she's not nearly as wise as she thinks she is."
"Is anyone?"
"I am," Scorpius says. "I married you."
My cheeks heat up under his compliment. Twenty years together doesn't change anything. Not really. He wraps an arm around my waist as we watch our daughter outside. Whether she ends up with Jake or not, this will always be the beginning of her love story. Endless possibilities tumble out of their conversation. There are so many things that could go wrong. But it doesn't matter. There are so many things that could go right.
"You know," I say, nestling into Scorpius's side, "my mum used to read me this Muggle poem about how love is a star for every wanderer. I'm so much luckier than that, though. I got a whole constellation."
