Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha
Chapter 1. Coincidence?
...
Sighing in relief, Kagome Higurashi closed the laptop in front of her. "Last paper for today is done… "
She was about to turn of her desk light when her phone suddenly beeped.
"An email from the office?" She muttered to herself. Figured it must be something important, she immediately opened the message.
Ms. Higurashi, a client needs an immediate help in filing a suit for tortious interference. He will contact you tomorrow morning at your office hours for further information regarding to his request.
Here is the client's contact.
Naraku, Fujiwara. 080567567
She quickly replied the message.
Alright. Thank you for letting me know.
'Naraku Fujiwara… That's sound so familiar.' Kagome thought to herself as she tapped a finger to her chin. Oh right, how could she forget? Naraku Fujiwara is the current owner of the Shikon no Tama Corp, one of the biggest jewelry industry in Japan.
She yawned. "Mmm, what time is it now?" She gasped as she saw the clock on her desk.
"2 AM! Crap- Gotta sleep now… or I won't be able to wake up tomorrow."
.
.
"Morning, Hojo!" Kagome greeted the brown-haired man on the front desk cheerfully.
The man smiled sheepishly and greeted her back with exaggerated enthusiasm. "Ah, Higurashi, good morning! It's a pretty nice day out there, don't you think?"
Kagome returned his smile before she walked away, walking towards the lift. Just when she was about to enter, she felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around to see her best friend, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"Hey, lovebird, being so lovey dovey this early in the morning, huh?"
Kagome giggled as she entered the lift. "What is so lovey dovey, Sango? I just greeted him."
"Suuree…" replied Sango in a sarcastic tone, entering the lift as well.
Kagome rolled her eyes and pushed the lift button. "Sango, Hojo and I are only friends, you know I don't see him that way."
Sango huffed. "You're no fun, Kagome. You know so many guys would jump at the chance to date you!"
"Oh?" replied the raven-haired woman as she raised one of her eyebrows.
"Why of course! Think about Akitoki, Daisuke, Koga, oh! Talking about him, do you still remember how he declared to us that you had finally agreed to be his woman? He went on and telling us that you two are finally together when you clearly didn't even bother to look at his direction twice. I swear, that guy is so desperate! Oh, and there are Emi's brother, Hideki, and Sora, from the information department…" Sango went on and on with the list until Kagome decided to cut her in.
"And your point is?" asked Kagome, obviously not really interested with the topic.
"For God's sake, Kagome. You're going to be twenty-five this year. Twenty five, Kagome. You would only lose all the good ones if you keep being so picky!"
"And this is coming from a woman who's fiancé is the biggest lecher in the world…"
Sango blushed. "Well, it's… errr, it's complicated!"
Kagome just laughed. "What part of it is complicated Sango? Or… don't tell me, you actually like that type of man…? A lecher? Tell me Sango," she leaned to whisper in her ears, "are his skills that amazing?"
If possible, Sango blushed even harder. But before she could open her mouth to say anything back, the lift was opened.
"Well. I'm going to my office. See you later, soon to be Mrs. Houshi!" Kagome waved to her friend and walked out of the lift, making her way to her office.
"Wait, Kagome, I'm not done with-" Too late, the lift has closed right in front of her.
.
RIIINGGG
"Higurashi."
"Greetings, Ms. Higurashi. This is from your client, Naraku Fujiwara."
"Ah," Kagome nodded to herself. "Greetings to you too, Mr. Fujiwara. I've heard about your request from the management office. I believe your case is tortious interference?"
"Ah, yes… And for your information, I have the complaint, certificate, some collectible evidences and trusted data ready with me. I'm highly positive that this will help the law suit processing."
"Thank you for informing me before hand, Mr. Fujiwara. Now, we would have to arrange a meeting so that I can assess your complaint and document, and see if we can work it together. Will tomorrow afternoon work for you?"
"Tomorrow afternoon is perfect. I would be available from 1 pm to 4 pm."
"Okay. Will 2 pm be good, then?"
"It's perfect."
"All set then, please come to our office tomorrow at 2pm. I will be sending you an email of the office's address momentarily."
"Thank you, Ms. Higurashi. I'm looking forward to work with you."
"The pleasure is all mine, Mr. Fujiwara."
After the call ended, Kagome breathed a sigh of relief.
'Mr. Fujiwara sounded like a nice man,' she thought to herself.
.
.
.
A tall, pale-skinned male who looked no older than thirty walked quickly along the corridor with a grim look on his face, obviously very unhappy about something. Finally reaching his destination, he burst into the room without a knock and headed straight to the younger male who was sitting on the chair.
That younger male seemed to be a little bit surprised for a while before he frowned and glared at him.
"Sesshomaru, I've told you, knock before you-"
BRAAKKK. The guy called Sesshomaru slammed his hands to the desk.
"What the fuck?!"
"Inuyasha, you fucking idiot…" He hissed angrily, "What the hell is this all about? What's this shit I've been hearing? What stupid thing have you done this time?"
Inuyasha's eyes widened in surprise, but he soon understood what was his older brother talking about. "I see you've heard about that bastard Naraku suing us."
"More precisely, suing you alone, you bloody moron," Sesshoumaru hissed, "Do you remember the last time our company got into a dispute with him? He almost sent your sorry ass to jail! I know father shouldn't have entrusted the company to you."
Inuyasha chuckled. "So now you think you are more responsible than me? You humor me, Sesshomaru. 'Cause last time I checked, it was you who left the company and went to America with your beloved wife. When did you start to give a shit about our company again, hmm?"
Sesshomaru growled. "Leave Rin out of this. You know damn well how she needs the treatment there, and I couldn't possibly leave her alone."
"Exactly. You had chosen her over the business, so you have no right to judge my way of handling the business. Besides, you can't blame me if Midoriko finds that I am a much capable partner instead of Naraku." Inuyasha said with a smirk.
Sesshomaru gritted his teeth. "I hope you could find a way to manage this trouble, little brother. Cause' I'm sure as hell won't be helping you. I'm tired of you and your immature behavior. Just for your information, Naraku has began to look for lawyers all over Japan to bring this case to the court."
"Don't worry, Sesshomaru. If the bastard wants a war, then a war it is. Naraku could hire all the best lawyers in Japan for all I care, but I will win this case, no matter what."
.
.
.
"It's a pleasure for me to finally be able to meet you, Ms. Higurashi. I've heard a lot about you from my working partners."
Kagome smiled. "You flattered me, Mr. Fujisawa, please, take a seat."
Naraku seated himself before he took out a big envelope from his suitcase and handed it over to Kagome. "These are all the documents that I've prepared for you, Ms. Higurashi."
Kagome nodded. Carefully, she opened the envelope, taking out the neatly arranged files inside of it. As usual, she took a look at the first document, the complaint letter.
She was reading the first few lines carefully until her eyes caught HIS name written there. She gasped, feeling the old wounds began to reopen….
.
.
.
Knock Knock
"Mr. Takahashi?"
"Come in." answered Inuyasha in his usual gruff voice.
A woman around her early thirties came inside the room. On her white blouse was a tag with a name "Shiori Toyama".
She cleared her throat. "Mr. Takahashi, I have some news for you."
"Yeah?" Inuyasha answered without even sparing a glance at her. He was busy looking at the company's data from his laptop.
"I believe this is something important to you and you might want to know it."
"Uh-uh.." replied Inuyasha, obviously still not interested.
"It's about Naraku Fujiwara, Sir."
Hearing Naraku's name, Inuyasha abruptly faced his secretary.
"What about him?" He asked almost immediately.
Pleased that her boss was finally paying some attention to what she gonna say, Shiori continued, "It appears that Naraku Fujiwara has find a new lawyer to file his suit against the company. From what I heard, yesterday he visited the Yoshioka Law firm to have a meeting with a lawyer."
Inuyasha smirked. "I see. So he made his move already, eh? Is there anything else?"
The shorthaired woman nodded and handed her boss a letter. "This is a letter from the court to our company, directed to you."
Inuyasha opened the letter and read it carefully. His eyes widened in surprise for a second, but as soon as he regained his composure, he began to spoke calmly. "Call in the family lawyer, Myouga for me. Tell him I'm filling a motion to Naraku's lawsuit right now."
.
.
That night, Kagome almost couldn't sleep. Naraku told just her that their first trial would be held at the end of the month. That meant that the suit has already been responded. After not seeing him for years, who would've thought she would finally see him again in a court.
Inuyasha Takahashi, the man who used to light her whole world.
'But apparently that man didn't really love you. He betrayed you with another woman, remember? And then he had the guts to leave without any explanation.' A small voice in her head reminded her.
After that incident three years ago, she was told by Inuyasha's friends that he had left to continue his study in England. Who would've thought that he would come back that soon and took over his family's business?
.
.
2 weeks later
"Myouga, are the documents ready yet?"
As fast as his feet could bring him, the sixty-year old man tried to catch up to his boss, while struggling to hold the stack of files in front of him.
"Yes-Sir."
"Good." answered Inuyasha briefly.
"Sir, I wonder who is this person that Naraku is working with. I've heard rumors that it was a woman. Considering that she is a lawyer from the Yoshioka Law Firm, she might be quite an opponent."
"Who cares? Do you think I would lose to that loser? Besides," he paused and smirked, "A worthy opponent always make a fight better, doesn't it?"
.
The stone-floored room shined dully in the light that penetrated through the windows high on the walls. In the gallery part of the room, a few wooden benches were already seated by some of the spectators.
"It seems that we might be a little bit too early, Ms. Higurashi." Naraku said.
Kagome glanced at her watch and nodded. "Yeah…"
'God. I'll be seeing Inuyasha Takahashi in flesh in less than ten minutes.' She thought.
A few moments later, the judge comes in. He surveyed the room before he puts on his robe and getting ready to reach his altar.
Inuyasha came in a few seconds later. Without looking around, he walked directly to his chair, along with his lawyer. He caught a glimpse of his opponent from his seating, and noticed that there was a woman- no doubt was his lawyer, sitting beside him.
'So the bastard really has a woman to defend him.' He thought to himself. He couldn't see the woman clearly as Naraku was blocking his view from her. As he tried to get a better look at her, the judge suddenly motioned for the trial to start.
"This is case number 1C07-1118-AM-00521, in the matter of a lawsuit from Fujiwara Naraku, against Takahashi Inuyasha. Present in the court room are the defendant and his attorney, the plaintiff and his attorney, along with the deputy prosecutor, the probation officer, and the chief justices." said the Judge, "Let the trial begin." With that, he hit the gavel. "Deputy Prosecutor, please lead us to the issue."
"Inuyasha Takahashi has been charged for a tortuous interference act against Naraku Fujiwara, resulting in a breach of a legal, protected contract that concerns the Shikon-No-Tama Corporation."
The judge nodded. "We would now hear an opening statement from the plaintiff's attorney."
'Yeah, let's hear everything you gotta say and get this over with soon…' thought Inuyasha impatiently.
The woman who sat beside Naraku rose.
"Greetings, and my best respect to everyone who present in the court room."
Inuyasha frowned deeply. Why did that voice sound so dangerously familiar?
His eyes widened in realization. In a flash, a few old memories were playing back in his mind. Without thinking twice, he stole a glance at the owner of that voice.
And as he stared at the brown orbs of the raven-haired woman, Inuyasha could've sworn that his heart stopped beating for a few seconds.
"Kagome… Higurashi..?"
"Hello, Mr. Takahashi," she bowed politely, "Finally, we meet. I've heard a lot from you."
Inuyasha almost couldn't believe what his eyes told him. In front of him was the woman whom he thought he would never see again. But… How? Why? When? Hundreds of questions invaded his mind, but he decided to remain silent for the moment.
Kagome cleared her throat. "Today, I am here on behalf of Mr. Fujiwara, representing him in his lawsuit against Mr. Takahashi. Mr. Takahashi is responsible for his actions against Mr. Fujiwara, which caused a breach in the legal contract between Mr. Fujiwara and Midoriko Ishikawa, owner of the Hikari Corporation, consequently resulting in a significant level of damages for Mr. Fujiwara part."
"Any rebuttals for this statement from the opposite party?" asked the Judge in his usual monotone voice.
Myouga rose. "Yes."
"Please speak." Said the judge.
The old lawyer cleared his throat. "As a lawyer representing Mr. Takahashi, I am here to point out that Mr. Takahashi never has the intention to interfere with Mr. Fujiwara and Mrs. Ishikawa's professional relationship. Neither do he has done anything to disrupt their legal contract."
The judge nodded, "Please clarify your statement."
"Mrs. Ishikawa does not breach the contract because of the interference from Mr. Takahashi. The contract is breached because Mr. Fujiwara has failed to fulfill a deed on his part. That being said, Mr. Takahashi holds no responsibility for the breaching of the contract." Said Myouga firmly.
"And, how, may I ask, can you justify your statement regarding to Mr. Fujiwara's part?" Kagome quickly struck the statement back.
"Mr. Fujiwara had failed to present all the data of the company to Mrs. Ishikawa, which was already a part of their contract."
"And can you please justify that Mr. Fujiwara indeed had failed to do it?"
Myouga answered back, which automatically earned him another counter argument from Kagome. The two were immediately getting preoccupied with their heated debate.
As if he had just come back to the world of reality, Inuyasha began to watch carefully as Kagome and Myouga kept throwing statements and arguments against each other, raising their tone once in a while.
Is she really the same woman from three years ago? She was always fiery, but not this… strong and dominating. Her long, silky raven hair, her pale complexion, her high-pitched voice… God. He still remembered everything about her almost as clearly as he did few years ago.
After what seemed like years, the trial ended without a final result. But that was pretty usual for a first trial.
As the Judge dismissed the court, Myouga went to shake hands with Kagome. As fast as she could, the raven-haired woman returned the polite gesture while trying hard to prevent any more-than-necessary eye contact with Inuyasha.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes, realizing that she was clearly avoiding him. So he decided to give her a piece of his mind.
One by one, the people in the courtroom began to leave. Kagome was about to follow Naraku to the car, before she suddenly felt someone tapped her shoulder and she turned back. Realizing who it was, her heart began to race uncomfortably.
"It's you." Inuyasha said in a small voice.
Kagome tried to force a smile to him. "Why, hello. Mr. Takahashi. Guess we'll be meeting again soon for the next trial."
Inuyasha growled. "Kagome. Drop this shit and stop acting as if you-."
"Takahashi, I know that you're always lacking of manner. But how very rude and disrespectful of you, talking to my lawyer like that." Naraku's voice suddenly cut him off.
Inuyasha scoffed. "This bitch right here you called your lawyer is-"
"Inuyasha Takahashi, stop," Kagome hissed, "I don't really appreciate people calling me names. If you have something to tell me, please do it in a more civilized way, and Mr. Fujiwara? Can you… Leave us for a moment?"
Seeing Naraku's seemingly disagreeing look, she quickly added, "Don't worry. Mr. Takahashi is… an old acquaintance of mine. I just need to sort a few things out with him. I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier. I didn't think this is going to be an issue here."
Naraku sighed. "Fine. But if he does anything inappropriate, please don't hesitate to call." Naraku said calmly, "Then I shall leave."
"So, a lawyer, huh." said Inuyasha finally when he saw that Naraku Fujiwara was no longer in sight, "Funny. I had always thought you wanted to be a teacher."
Kagome shrugged. "Who knows? Three years can do a lot of change to a person you know… Or, maybe you just don't know me well enough." She couldn't help the sarcastic remark of her last sentence.
Inuyasha's eyes widened for a bit before his expression turned dark. "Listen, woman. What happened three years ago-"
"Was a mistake. I knew. We were still young, too naïve and had too little understanding of the real world, and particularly love. You know? I didn't blame you for anything that happened. In fact, in a way, I was grateful that you left. When I think about it again, maybe it was the only way so that we could both find our own future. In fact, I'm really happy with my life right now. So I guess we're cool now?"
Of course none of them was true. She was happy with her life- yes. But she couldn't really picture her life with any man other than him. She wanted to hear the explanation of his cruel act three years ago. She loved him, and had believed that what they had was perfect. So why? Why did he betray her and leave with no explanation?
"You're lying." Inuyasha simply stated.
"No, I'm not." She replied stubbornly.
Inuyasha growled slightly and grasped her shoulders, forcing her to look at him.
"Look at me." He commanded in a firm tone.
Kagome glared at the man in front of her. "What is it, Takahashi?"
"I want you to look straight at my eyes and tell me that you are content with your life now. Tell me that you were actually glad I left," he paused to lightly graze her cheek with his right hand, "tell me you don't have any feelings for me again."
"I don't have any more feelings for you, Inuyasha." Kagome said in a bitter tone. She wasn't exactly sure what she said was true though. But at the moment it seemed like the right thing to say. She shouldn't be harboring any more feelings for this man, right? After all he did?
"Lies," Inuyasha spat, "You're lying, Kagome. I can tell it. You may be smart, but not smart enough to fool me. How long do you think I've known you?"
"Oh? So now you think you know me the best, Takahashi? Hmm?" Kagome challenged, "So you think I'm smart? Huh? Is that why you left me without explanation three years ago? Because you thought I would magically figure it out by myself? Is that what you're trying to say?"
Inuyasha's eyes widened in surprise at her bombarding questions. "What the fuck are you talking about, Kagome? Who left without explanation? I had tried to-"
"Oh save your words Inuyasha, I don't wanna hear anything you said!" She yelled angrily.
Inuyasha growled, "Bitch, I said listen-"
"Is everything alright here?"
Inuyasha scoffed and glared at the intruder. So the bastard had come back. "No, Fujiwara. But it will once you get lost and let me-"
Kagome cleared her throat. "Everything is alright, Mr. Fujiwara. We're just discussing old matters. I think it would be best if we leave now."
Inuyasha glared at her. "Kagome, you-"
"It's Ms. Higurashi to you, Mr. Takahashi. And I shall see you next time." answered Kagome coldly before she walked away. Naraku soon followed, but not before he threw a mocking glare at Inuyasha.
"So she wants to play it that way…" He said to no one to particular as he watched the retreating figures of his enemy, and the woman of his past.
He didn't know why, but he was sure of it; she still loved him. After three years, her feelings had remained the same; she was just too stubborn to admit it. And he didn't plan to let it off that way.
