Welcome! Sorry about the delay, but you know how College can be! I won't attempt to stall you any longer. Welcome to the rewrite of The Necron Interference!
Humanity. A race full of promise. Trapped on their planet for thousands of years, they ascended to the heavens on ships made of living metal. It was there they discovered something. Their star, Sol, the one that breathed life into the Earth, had in fact been killing them. Children in space, away from the effects of Sol's radiation, lived long lives, centuries longer than people who lived in Sol's light. Without a viable method of Faster than Light travel, they create ships out of Living metal. An entity unto itself, it is nigh indestructible, and can fix itself with minimal outside interference. With powerful engines, they drifted across the blackness of space, finding new worlds, establishing Teleport Portals, creating an interstellar footbridge.
With the average lifespan being three hundred years, the Human Empire flourishes. But, the now realized roots of Sol are never forgotten. Scientists toil for years, seeking an answer to why Sol kills Humanity at a far faster rate than other cosmic radiation.
It is around this time that Humanity encounters another race. Known simply as The Old Ones, they could manipulate the Warp, a separate dimension of pure energy. It gave them Faster than Light travel, powers that were by all rights Magic, and virtual immortality. A society based on worship and religious faith, they clashed horribly with Humanity, a technology focused species.
The old ones, by virtue, were a proud, arrogant race, believing all that they created or decided was the best, be it in art, music, or politics. Humanity was a species that lived and thrived on scientific principles, who constantly tried to find a better way, realizing that nothing was perfect.
It didn't take long for diplomatic relations to degrade. Numerous events took place, slowly weakening the relationship between the two species. Finally, after almost a thousand years, the two went to war.
Human technology was great. It possessed the ability to tear holes in space, manipulate orbital paths of planets, unlimited energy generations, and the Living Metal, what was considered to be their greatest creations. But, in the face of The Old Ones, who had The Warp, Faster than Light Travel, and a power completely unknown to them that could change the very scientific principles that founded their civilization, they were unable to effectively combat them.
World by world, system by system, Humanity fell. For every battle they one, they would lose 10. Finally, after 100 years of battle, they were driven to Earth, under the lethal gaze of Sol. With Humanity beat, The Old Ones left, creating a Warp Storm that would enshroud the System from travel, either by their ships or by Humanity's ships.
For an uncountable period of time, Humanity was trapped. It was during this time they renamed their species. From Humanity, a word that described what they once were, to Necrontyr, a word found in the roots of their language, loosely translated to 'Many Dead.' Their entire civilisation was built upon death. Be it the death of friend or foe, their civilization was built upon the dead. A fitting renaming.
With no way to leave the system, and with no way to fight The Old Ones, they suffered, trapped in the system. What neither faction considered however, was the presence of the Warp on Sol.
The Warp storm, enshrouding the entire system, nearly tripled the output of harmful radiation. The Necrontyr began to die, burned beneath Sol. The Earth's magnetosphere, unable to block the radiation, buckled, leaving people to suffer.
It didn't matter how far they went from Sol, with radiation on one side, penetrating all but the thickest of Living metal walls, to the Warp Storm, keeping them from leaving, they were trapped. It was then, during their hour of need, that they found it.
The cause of all radiation from Sol, for its fast death. The reason the Necrontyr suffered so, was found. An entity, not of the Warp, but so massive, it covered the entirety of the System. Its body was the Radiation, and it fed on Sol.
Thinking to turn it into a weapon, they spent years, and generations, creating their grandest achievement. The Starlight Bridge. A device to give this, being, a body, a form so that it could interact with Humanity. While it had many goals, the ultimate goal was to use it to break the Warp Storm and defeat the Old Ones.
It was on a particular day, with black storm clouds rolling across the sky, a great pyramid, made of Black Living metal, framed with red Gauss energies, more powerful than Green Gauss Energies, that the Starlight Bridge was activated.
The entirety of the being, this, God of the Material universe, was compressed, folded, and formed into a Body of Living metal, now known as Necrodermis, or 'Metal of the Dead'. Given a form created by the Necrontyr it was their finest work. And so awoke Mag'ladroth, The Void Dragon.
With a mastery of technology, and no longer hindered by Sol's crushing radiation, Mag'ladroth helped guide the Necrontyr to what they once were. Shortly after His awakening though, the Necrontyr discovered something. Mag'ladroth required food.
Not in the traditional sense, of calories and fats and nutrients, no, he required energy. Power. For it was not that the Radiation lessened the life span of the Necrontyr, but rather Mag'ladroth feeding from the sun that shortened their lives. The effects of living within what many called a God, shortened their lives.
Plans are made. Plans to destroy the Old Ones, and feed them to Mag'ladroth. Named a C'tan, or Star God in their language, he helped Humanity devise new weapons. Infantry grade Gauss weapons, powerful computers, and technology that would fight the warp, granting them a mastery of technology completely unheard of.
But, with the Warp Storm surrounding their system, they had no way to leave. With limited resources, the Necrontyr began their ultimate project. A plan to survive, to wait out the Storms.
The first stage was to build a Dyson Sphere, a previously fictional concept to create an impenetrable sphere around Sol. Using the combined intellect of a super advanced society and the advanced mind of Mag'ladroth, the sphere is created. Utilizing the mass of the star itself, matter to energy converters took the mass of the star and turned it into Necrodermis. Advanced construction techniques takes already powerful metal and creates an engineering marvel. 600 years pass, and the construction of the sphere is finished. With a diameter of the orbital radius of Earth, it has miles and miles of protective plating. Underneath is a central layer of utilities, meant to keep the populace inside safe, and the shell secure. The inside layer is soil, water, rock, all the products of Earth, spread across the entire inside of the Sphere.
Stage two began 400 years later. With the population growing, and the Warp Storm showing no signs of letting up, vast think tanks were created, all focused on developing a viable, long term storage option for the Necrontyr. Many options are devised, ranging from a time locked pod, to a cryogenic system. It was during these experiments that Phase travel was developed.
Taking an object out of phase with the current reality, phase travel was a boon. By removing an object from the set of laws binding this universe, anything was possible. Travel was dictated by the laws the object set upon the space around it.
Initial attempts at using this new technology on a ship wide scale to pass through the warp storms are met with failure, as no matter how far these ships go, the Warp Storms persist. Work continues on a viable long term stasis option.
A problem arises however. Attempts to placate the Void Dragon's hunger are not working. It continues to hunger, to feed. However, a return to its previous form is unacceptable, as that would mean the shortened life spans and radiological threats to the Necrontyr. Amazingly, a student at a local technical academy comes up with a solution.
Give the Void Dragon a digital body.
AI's were not a new concept, not by a long shot. Some measure of success had been achieved, but storage had always been an issue. How to create an AI, a true, living AI out of digital code. Such a thing was impossible, even for the Necrontyr.
Work begins on a machine designed to turn the Void Dragon into computer code. Working with the being itself, it takes many years until they create a machine. Like the Starlight Bridge, but with a different end result.
It takes all the power of the Dyson Sphere to complete, but the end results are far greater than could have been imagined.
The Void Dragon, existing as a digital life form. No longer requiring energy to feed, as its being was composed of energy far purer than any of its previous forms. It now existed on the informational super highway, existing entirely inside the collective network of the Necrontyr's computer systems. And what computer systems they were.
Quantum computers, capable of computing massive amounts of data. Data storage taking shape in the form of Necrodermis crystals, storing an almost infinite amount of data in the palm of a hand.
Years pass. The Dyson Sphere is reinforced, ships and their armaments are improved, and infantry scale weapon systems are improved. Red Gauss energy has become the norm, stabilized to the level of Green energy but with the same power of red.
Finally, after almost a thousand years since the re-reincarnation of the Void Dragon, the warp storm ceased, revealing a universe far different than that which they left.
So, clearly this is a very different universe than which I originally created. I, personally, am liking it far more. I would expect a chapter in the next few hours, I have apparently developed a slight case of insomnia. Therefore, I find it easier to stay up.
Now, in case you have questions regarding Red/Green Gauss energies. Given that the Void Dragon, god of all technology, was awesome, it is my belief that he managed to create a form of the always lovable Gauss energy that was superior to the traditional green. Red Gauss energy is more powerful, but less stable. However, a better containment system, like the one the now digital Void Dragon has helped engineer, leads to better... well... everything.
Now, yes the Dyson Sphere is an impossible concept according to our science. Yes, things like cold fusion can't exist. Well, fuck you too buddy, this is fanfiction. If I want my Necrontyr to fly through the sky shooting rainbows out their asses, or if I want Charlie Sheen to arrive on a ship made of Blue meth, it's my choice. Hope you enjoy. I look forward to the next chapter for you to read.
