Madame Vastra and Jenny both followed obediently behind Clara and River. Neither one of the two lovers wanted to make conversation on the short walk, in fear of the two travellers breaking down.
River held the TARDIS door open for them and wordlessly, they entered. Understanding her role, the TARDIS pulled up a map, showing the way to the medical bay in which the Doctor was being kept alive.
When they reached the bay, Vastra had to fight to hold in her emotions. She chose instead to raise a subtle hand up to her mouth as she struggled to hold back the tears.
She rarely showed emotion, but when it came to those close to her and good friends, she tended to make the exception.
"He just looks so-"
"Helpless."
In that moment, she was grateful for Jenny's ability to finish her sentences; had she have been unable to do that, Vastra would have been forced to finish it herself, and she definitely wouldn't have been able to stay so strong.
Her hand found her lovers' and Jenny squeezed it reassuringly.
"Now do you understand why we need your help, Madame Vastra? You are the only one who can help."
"I understand, Clara. I will help you. We both will."
Clara let out a choked sob and launched herself at the Silurian, clutching to her like she was her last remaining lifeline, "Thank you. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this means to me."
"Oh, I think I have an idea."
They shared a laugh and retreated back into the control room, unable to look at the Doctor anymore.
As they were about to leave, the TARDIS let out a sound-one that only Clara and River recognised as one of pain. River turned back and spread her palms out flat on the console. She frowned and turned back to those at the door, a look of panic clear on her face.
"What is it?"
She shook her head in response to Jenny's question, "I don't know."
