Mai took the dagger with both hands and breathed in deeply. she knew what she had to to do, but she was not ready for it.

Mai the wild, bubbly, crazy ghost hunter. Who had fallen for the hard headed, self absorbed, cold ghost hunter boss. yes they were very different, but they were the same in many ways.

if only things were different, than it wouldn't be so hard to leave. if only Naru had continued to stay cold to her, than it would not be so hard. but now Mai realized that things will forever be changed, even if she chose to stay or not. because she had found out, what she was really to him and what he was to her.

leaving was gonna be so hard.

Naru and the others quickly rushed out of the tea room. they ran to the room Mai was at, but when they opened the door. Mai was not there. they begun to worry and ran out of the room and came down stares. they saw Mai in the hall opening the door to the outside.

"Mai" Mai slowly turned around.

"oh, hey" she smiled, but everyone saw that it was fake. Mai was different and everyone noticed right away. they all froze in their tracks afraid to move. her eyes showed no emotion, no vivid color that Naru recognized and grew so fund of.

"Mai what is..."

"did you find Masako" she said interupting. Masako stepped out from behind everyone as if she was hiding at first.

"Mai, lm here. lm all okay." Mai looked at her and gave her a slight smile.

"lm glad." she said words to quietly they had trouble hearing.

"Mai" Masako said coming closer.

"there is something l need to ask you." she said in a soft comforting voice.

"about what? the house?" Mai's eyes suddenly seemed to regain their color and she sprang back to life all of a sudden, but she was not herself, she was not their Mai. she was not Naru's beloved Mai. she seemed worried. the look in her eyes. afraid, scared as if focused on a totally different situation.

"yes, the house."

"what do you want to know? l will tell you everything."

"Mai, l found this in the tea room where l was held captive." she said coming closer so Mai so she can see the letters.

"osamo said that he saw on the mail box in front of this house letters that spelled out tani, but looked like some where missing. these are the missing letters. if you put them together they spell out your last name. Mai you used to live in this house." Mai nod's her head a little.

"do you want to know everything?" she ask's. everyone hesitated at first, but then all at once slowly nodded.

"my parents, l, lived here. l was not originally born in Japan, but here, in the united states, in Florida. my parents never wanted me to know that l was born here. so they locked away my memory's, untill l came here myself and started to remember." everyone did not look so surprised as if they all knew that from the letters they found. only Naru stood frozen in his tracks. he stood there looked more worried at her, every time she spoke. he looked as if he was gonna lose her, if she kept on talking.

"l was born with a disase. every night l would start feeling terrible pain. Naru has witnessed this." everyone looked at him, but Naru did not move. he wanted her to stop talking. it could all remain a secrate, he didn't need to know about her past. he just wanted her back, he wanted the real Mai back.

"my parents, they wanted to find a way to free me from it. my parents before they moved here. this house was used for terrible things. the people who lived here before them summoned demons and ghosts. it was all for fun and games before they really did summon a demon and were killed in the process because the demon needed a sacrifice to possess this house." Naru wanted to cover his ears. he wanted to stop listening. but her voice rang in his ears like a loud bell and he was forced to listen till the end.

"the house spoke to them one day. my parents tried to find any way possible. they were desperaide you see. it told them how to fix this problem. it led them to those many bloody rooms you saw before. my number l guess was 52. they laid me down onto a wooden table. l remember being awaken during the whole process. it wasn't painful, yet it took a long time. l remember seeing something seep out of me. and then a girl appeared. she looked exactly like me, looked a little older but no dought was me. l found out this right away. my parents looked happy. l remember then looking strate at me and telling me 'look your new sister' but then the voice came again. it told them the process was done. they looked a little worried but then relaxed. you see. she was the other half of me. like a twin sister but more. she literally came from my body. she was the pain, the pain that was stored inside of me, the pain that was taken away from me and created her. we were like sisters, really close. we understood each other because we were the same person. but then the house, it wanted more. so we left. we couldn't take Manika with us. it was so hard to see her stay back. my parents tried to escape by coming to Japan. but the demons curse followed them. not long after they died from it." Mai paused every couple seconds catching her breath, as she kept talking. no one dared to interrupt her. it was like they were listening to a horror story. and they couldn't believe it that this happaned to Mai. all this happened to their Mai.

"Manika stayed at this house and lived with the pain and was so lonely. she thought that my parents didn't care about her. betrayed her and left her all alone in this house. the house offered her to get ride of the pain if she. if she killed people. she would kill them with their fears, the house feeds on that and she will take their souls in her body for the pain to go away. and she agreed. you see" Mai said her voice shaky.

"the house, when it gets enough souls, when l decide to stay with Manika. it will devour us both. it needs us to be complete. if its complete this house will be like a night mare coming out from a horror movie. terrible things would happen, much terrible than death, if we do not stop it. thats why...thats why" Naru was starting to figure out where this conversation was going and he did not like it. he saw Mai reaching behind her back.

"Mai no!" he shouted.

"you must get ride of me." she pulled out the golden dagger and held it in front of her. the pointy end to her chest. everyone gasped and lunged forward, but then they all stopped when they heard Mai talk again. her voice braking.

"cant you see. l am the host. if l die, the house die's with me. l am the only one who can do this. who can stop it from destroying us all." she said her voice totally changing as if she would break down in tears.

"but Mai you dont have to do this, we can find a different way. together." Mai shook her head.

"lm sorry Naru but there is no other way. please dont make this harder than it already is." she reached into her back pocket and pulled out the photograph Naru had given to her. she flipped to the back with no writing.

"l finally understood what the writing in the back photograph finally means." she said tears spilling onto her checks. she was talking about him and only to him. she looked up and stared into his eyes through her tear stained eyes.

"l want to protect you Naru." she said dropping the photo. using bother her hands she pushed the knife through her chest. everyone's eyes widen they could not believe that this was happening. right in front of them. Mai fell to the floor. spitting out blood. her sweater drained in her blood. Naru caught her before she reached the glass floor. he held her tightly for a couple seconds before he set her gently down. Mai slowly looked up, as she saw tears falling onto her checks, noticing that Naru was crying. he prest onto her chest with his jacket trying to stop the bleeding. letting her blood spread all over his shirt.

"just let me go" Mai said softly.

"l can't" he said breathlessly.

"l just can't let you go. l'll do what ever it takes to save you."

"do you hear it, can't you tell the house is crumbling." she was right. the ground was starting to tremble. everyone was around Mai in a big circle. Mai looked around at everyone and smiled. she took a deep breath that was her last.

"lm glad l got to protect you all" with that said she slowly closed her eyes and lay motionless. this time it was the real thing. Naru started crying and couldn't control his tears. everyone around her started sobbing quietly.

"why Mai?" Ayako asked.

"why?"

"poor thing she was so young." said John.

"l kind of get it why she did it. we are her family and she wants to protect her family." lin said.

"but" Naru said. everyone stared at him because they knew he was the one most hurt.

"she wont get to know if she really did protect her family or caused it more pain." he swooped his hand under her bangs and moving them aside. he kissed her forehead gently.

"you will always be in our hearts, espashilly mine. l will never forget you." Masako watched as a small ball of light left Mai's body and vanish. Masako knew it was Mai.

Manaka's plans did not go as planned. instead she found herself in a totally different location of the house. a room stood in front of her. she walked right inside. she thought a key was needed since she has never seen this room, but no, it was open. the room was like an office. in the middle was a desk and on the desk was a box. next to it was golden locket. Manika walked up to the desk. took the locket with both hands and opened it. her eyes widen when she saw the two pictures inside. her and Mai. a tear escaped her eye.

"our parents have never forgotten about you." she heard a voice behind her. Manika turned around to see a glowing figure of a person, white like a ghost. Manika's eyes darkened.

"so what, this does not prove anything."

"do you, do you remember that time, when we played outside. remember that time when our mom brought out cookies and lemonade for us." a quick flash appeared in her head and quickly despaired. Manika's eyes softened.

"remember when you first appeared, they said her's your new sister." another flash appeared, but stayed longer.

"remember how we used to know what each of us was thinking, and how we would always laufe when we would finish each other sentences." Manika remembered this and smiled.

"yea, l remember we would have tea party with our dolls and stuffed animals. and when they wont do something right you put them on time out." her smile turned into a little laufter, but then it fadded away. untill she realized what had happened. she looked up at Mai, horror on her face.

"oh Mai." she said braking into tears.

"what have l done Mai? what have l done?" she said covering her face with her hands. Mai just smiled.

"guess you forgot about all that, lm glad you remember."

"lm so sorry Mai, lm so sorry." she than realized what she could have done. she quickly ran out of the room and into the hallway. the house behind her was crumbling.

everyone heard loud footsteps coming their way. everyone looked up. Manika quickly ran down stares.

"l can help" she said quickly.

"its all your fault" bousan said getting up.

"its all your fault, thats she gone." he yelled at her. Ayako got up controlling bouson, but gave an evil look to Manika.

"how can you help her? how can you save Mai" Naru let Manika come closer. she nealed down beside her.

"l can give her my life. l am her other half, so l was born from her. that means l can save her by giving my other half to her. she will have no pain, but there is one thing."

"what is it?" John asked.

"she wont remember anything from three years ago." they all gasped.

"that means she wont remember us." he said calmly. she nodded.

"l want to give her my life. it is the least l can do since l already caused her so much pain." everyone moved aside letting her get into her possession. Manika closed her eyes and clapped her hands together. soon a bright glow appeared in her hands. she moved it to Mai's chest and let it flow into her. everyone waited pashintly.

Masako was surrounded in a yellow warm light, with white puff balls flowing up. Masako looked around. untill she saw her other half in front of her.

"hello" Mai said. Manika smiled.

"you have always been a sister to me and l will never forget that. you will be inside my heart forever." she said in a sweet, warm voice claping her hands together on her chest. she soon looked up at Manika.

"but l shall take my leave." Manika only smiled and nodded. the warmness and glowing light soon dissapaered and Mai soon found herself opening her eyes and staring at a whole bunch of people, with red eyes and puffy noses all looking so happy to see her. she did not know who they all where. Mai sat up. everyone all at once hugged her.

"we are so happy to see you." Ayako said.

"huh, who are you?" Ayakos smile dropped.

"Manika, did say she would forget three years of her life."

"Manika" she looked confused. but then her face softened and she said with such a warm and sweet voice.

"my sister." than she noticed blood that was dripping from her shirt to her jeans.

"what is this? why am l bleeding?" she started freaking out, noticing her wound in her chest.

"someone call the ambulaNCE" bousan yelled. Naru got up and walked over staring outside. the house was completely into pieces, so it means the demon was destroyed. Ayako walked up to Naru, with a expression that she was sceeming something.

"so arent you happy to see Mai alive and well." Ayako teased nudging him on the shoulder. Naru tried to look like his usual, calm self, but Ayako was Making it difficult.

"Ayako quit playing around." he demanded.

"oh come on, just tell me how you feel seeing her. we all know how you really feel about her."

"Ayako"

"come on you know your happy." right then he just broke and started crying on Ayakos shoulder. the priestess looked shocked at him, but then smiled a motherly smile and patted him on the back.

"lm so happy to see her. lm just so happy, so happy." he cried. that was all he kept saying and couldn't say anything else. he said those words with a smile on his face.

Masako noticed this and felt uneasy, because deep down inside she was a little upset. its not like she wanted to Mai to died or any thing. Mai was the most person who was worried and tried to find her when she went missing. its just she never seen Naru look so happy and actually crying. and Naru never cryed untill now. she felt a little jeoluse.

later on the ambulance came and took Mai away.

a few days later.

the gang visited her at the hospital. they all greeted her with gifts and happy faces, all what a family would do. only she couldn't remember any of them. when they all left. Mai turned her attention to the tv that had a news channel explaining about how they found over 200 hundred bodies of tourists who came to rent in the destroyed house. than Mai heard a knock. Naru walked in carring a bukay of flowers. Mai's favorates. he handed them to Mai. Mai too them with a grateful smile. she sniffed them and breathed in their deep sent. Naru watched her. giving her one of those small smiles that slips out now and then. Naru got of the bed and started heading for the door.

"wait." Mai said. Naru looked back grateful she called out to him.

"lm sorry to ask, but who are you to me." Naru thought to himself. he couldn't say what he really wanted to say, because she probably wont remember the kiss so he said something else instead.

"a friend."

"friend, lm not good at making friend."

"we all are fiends, we are really close." Mai sets the buckay down and noticed that something is inside. she takes it out and notices its photograph of them both. she flips the back seeing the writing. a flashback flashes in her head as she remembers picking up the same photograph. Mai looks up as if she just remembered something very important.

"Naru" she slowly said.

"l remember you, Naru"

okay,, sso there you have it the last chapter. As you already might have figured this out. there would be a sequal to this chapter.

oh one more thing. the ghost who asked Masako to help her, or helped Masako, needed them to find their bodies. that was the only way their souls could be free. l dont think l explained it in this chapter. l hope l expalined everything well, and didn't confuse you. if you have any questions just ask l'll be glad to answer.
