Epilogue

The rest of that winter was quiet, save for the main topic of gossip at Hogwarts. Although the castle itself had many secrets, keeping a secret within its walls was almost impossible. And though they acted with the utmost discretion, it didn't take long for everyone to know that the Potions professor and the Muggle Studies professor were much more than friends and co-workers.

That spring, Draco invited Anna to spend part of the spring break at Malfoy Manor with him and his mother. And, while no one would call the relationship between Anna and Narcissa warm, she soon realized how happy this woman made her son, so she tolerated the Muggle woman's presence and even managed to be polite.

At the end of the school year, the scores on the Muggle Studies sections of the N.E.W.T and O.W.L. exams proved outstanding, and Anna was offered a three year contract extension, which she enthusiastically accepted.

That summer she gave up her London flat, intending to make Hogwarts her home for the duration of her employment. She stayed with Draco at the chateau in France for a three week late-summer vacation, and returned for the school year tanned, rested, and blissfully happy.

That was, until the third day of classes.

She was walking a group of third years through the Muggle education system when Luna burst into her classroom.

"Anna! You have to come quickly! Someone has been in your chamber again!"

Oh no, thought Anna. This was supposed to be over! She dropped the book she had been teaching from and hurried out of her classroom. As she rounded the corner of the hall leading to her chamber, she saw her portrait door standing wide open. Bracing herself for whatever she might find inside, she sprinted the last few yards to the door. She stopped cold the second she crossed the threshold.

There was no disaster. Her mouth gaped as she saw the huge flower arrangements filling the main room. She could smell their sweet perfume. Dozens of miniscule fairy lights floated through the air, making the room glow.

"What in the world?" she whispered. Just then Draco appeared in the doorway to her bedroom, leaned against the doorframe and crossed his arms. He looked devastatingly handsome in a Muggle tuxedo.

"Good afternoon, Professor Jacobs" he said.

"What's going on here?" she laughed nervously.

"Some of the staff have asked me to convey their pleasure that you have agreed to stay in our world for another three years" he said, putting his hands in his pants pockets as he nonchalantly strolled through the main room.

"The pleasure is all mine" she replied.

"Well" he looked pointedly at her. "I said some of the staff are pleased with the extension. Some are not" he said, stopping in front of the largest flower arrangement and examining it.

Her heart dropped. What is he getting at? "Oh?" she said quietly.

"Yes" he said, still scrutinizing the flowers. "Take me for example."

She felt a hole open in her stomach. If he was breaking up with her, this was a cruel way to do it.

"You?" She could barely breathe.

He pulled a flower from the vase; a perfect, white, long stemmed rose, and approached her.

"A three year stay in our world, in my world, is simply not acceptable to me. I want more."

"'Anna, how long are you intending to stay here at Hogwarts?'" he quoted* and handed her the rose. Somehow, Elvis Costello's 'She' began to play.

She paused and looked into his eyes, as a beautiful smile lit her face.

"Indefinitely."

The tears began to fall as her heart soared.

"Or perhaps another way" he said. "Maybe, a Muggle tradition?" he said, loudly.

Her heart pounded as she watched him pull a small velvet box from his pocket and he gracefully dropped down on one knee. He opened the box and held it up to her. Inside was a beautiful emerald and diamond ring.

"Anna Jacobs, it would be my honor to call you my wife in any world where you would have me. Will you marry me?"

She reached out and softly touched the beautiful ring, as if it would disappear at any second.

"Yes" she managed to whisper through her tears.

"I'm sorry" he said, grinning from ear to ear. "A little louder please?"

"Yes!" she shouted. "Yes, Yes, Yes!"

As he jumped to his feet a loud cheer erupted from the hallway. Startled, Anna looked and saw what appeared to be half the student body applauding, along with Professors McGonagall, Lovegood and Longbottom.

"What?" she asked, looking at her aunt.

Professor McGonagall shrugged. "Muggle Studies lesson. Courtship and Marriage Traditions."

Anna burst out laughing as Draco slipped the ring on her finger. Some of the cheers turned to catcalls and wolf-whistles as he dipped her back over his arm and kissed her passionately.
