Chapter 12
Jessie couldn't believe it once she saw where PJ's double date was going to be.
"Kwikki Chikki?" she said with disbelief. "I've never even heard of this place."
"I work at the one back on Denver," PJ said. "And I was thrilled to find that there's one in the Big Apple. That means that for our double date tonight, I get five percent off."
"How romantic," Jessie muttered.
"Now just remember to act natural," PJ said. "And according to the text Skylar sent me, she and Chad are already inside and have saved us seats."
"Oh, trust me, I can act natural," Jessie said. "But define natural: I mean, am I a super model, or a high profile TV actress?"
PJ shook his head. "Neither. Er, at least I don't think you're an actress or model."
Jessie rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Let's just go in."
PJ and Jessie entered the Kwikki Chikki, located the booth that Skylar and Chad were sitting at and slid into the empty seats.
"PJ, I'm so glad that you were able to make it!" Skylar said happily. "And I love the restaurant you chose!"
"Yeah, nothing says romance like Grade F, fast food chicken," Chad muttered.
At that moment, a waitress walked over to the table. "Hello, welcome to Kwikki Chikki in New York City," she said in a monotone voice. "Can I start you all off with some drinks?"
Jessie, Chad and Skylar ordered water while PJ ordered grape juice.
Once the waitress left, the conversation began.
"So, PJ, who's your new girlfriend?" Skylar asked,
"This is Jessie," PJ replied. "And—"
"I'm a TV actress," interrupted Jessie.
PJ looked surprised. "You are?" Jessie stomped on his foot under the table. "Yes, she is," he said through gritted teeth.
"So what TV shows are you on?" asked Skylar.
Jessie paused. "Well…uh…I'm on that one show… on that one network… that everyone's talking about."
Skylar nodded thoughtfully. "I think I've seen that show."
Suddenly, Chad stood up. "Please excuse me, I've gotta use the bathroom. I'll be right back." He walked towards the back of the restaurant.
The waitress returned with drinks a couple of seconds later. "I will be back with you momentarily to take your order," she said after distributing the drinks.
"Aren't we supposed to get menus?" Jessie asked.
The waitress narrowed her eyes. "Are you telling me how to do my job?"
Jessie shook her head defensively. "Nope. Carry on."
The waitress glared once more before walking away.
When PJ picked up his cup, it slipped out of his hands, fell into his lap and burst open.
Jessie jumped out of the booth just barely missing the grape juice. "PJ!"
"Sorry," PJ apologized as he slid out of the booth. "I'd better go to the bathroom to clean this out."
