Hello, my beautiful readers! I know I'm a day late, but our internet was down yesterday. See you next Friday (unless, you guys get 5 more reviews (; ) Enjoy!

We spent the rest of the day touring America's capital, as the Washington Monument wouldn't be ready to use until sunset.

We leisurely strolled the grounds, which weren't too terribly exciting in my opinion. At least, not compared to the beauty of London. Carter, on the other hand, was about ready to wet himself in excitement. He frequently pointed and yelled at several of the stone buildings, spouting random facts about each. Yawn.

Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate an impressive feat of architecture, but it doesn't positively blow my mind. I did rather like the Lincoln Memorial. That thing is way bigger than it looks on the penny. The statue inside was as tall as four of me standing on each other's shoulders. The giant pool in front of the Washington Monument was pretty cool too.

I thought Zia and Carter both were going to refuse to leave the library. Apparently, it contains over thirty-six million books. (Yet another fact courtesy of Carter. )

Bast and I, on the other had, were bored out of our minds. Our only entertainment was the plethora of magazines, but one can only read so many fashion and beauty articles before they surrender to boredom.

After what felt like an eternity, it was time to travel to Memphis. Ye-haw.

As usual, I was expect to open the portal. After all, I was the best. With all of the tourists buzzing around, it's a miracle that no one saw us. When I mentioned this to Carter, he just scoffed and spouted something about 'the mist'; I didn't really pay attention.

We stumbled out of a sphinx statue in downtown Memphis, and I had to clutch a rail for support. Traveling so far in two days was taking it out of me. I continued to hold on until the side walk stopped spinning. Dog boy and Walt better appreciate my effort.

"Now, where do we find Thoth?" Zia wondered out loud. I remembered that she was the only one who hadn't been with us on Thoth's wild goose chase.

"Graceland." I said hesitantly. "Didn't he live in that university over by Graceland?"

"I think so, unless he finally moved to Memphis, Egypt like he originally planned." Carter answered.

"Don't be such a Debbie Downer." I scolded. "Let's try not to get lost, okay? Because Memphis is a lot bigger than D.C."

I must have jinxed it, because, low and behold, we got terribly lost in the city of country music. I'm talking about, make a giant square and somehow end up where you started, despite turning different directions. We were so lost, I'm pretty sure we walked passed the sphinx we used to travel like three different times.

"That's it." Zia panted. "I'm calling a taxi, and they'll take us to Graceland. If we can't find it from there, we're screwed."

True to her word, she stepped off the curb, onto the crowded shoulder of the road and whistled a sharp, ear-splitting call.

Thankfully, the nearest cab pulled over for us. Zia's whistle could probably break glass. It was a bright yellow bulky car, and it's driver honked impatiently for us to get in.

Once we had all clamored inside, he gruffly asked "Where to?"

"The University of Memphis." I spoke up, waiting for Carter to have my epiphany.

" I thought we were going to visit Graceland." Carter remarked through gritted teeth.

"We were, but our friend at the university gave us a ride to Graceland last time we visited, and we need to see him first." I tried to be cryptic, but probably failed miserably.

Apparently, it was enough to make Carter remember how we were teleported to Graceland, rather than walking, and there was no guarantee that the two were in the vicinity of each other. "Oh, I'd almost forgotten. Yes, we'll just go to the university."

Bast and Zia peered curiously at us, but remained silent until we had arrived and payed the driver.

"I thought you said he lived near Graceland." Zia demanded.

"I forgot that instead of directing us to Graceland for his quest, he simply opened a portal and dropped us off." I corrected.

"Wasn't that during the Demon days?" Bast asked. "You can't open portals during the Demon Days."

"A god or goddess of magic can." I countered. "Are you coming with us this time?"

She hesitantly glanced about. "I think not."

"Why?" Carter questioned.

"I have my reasons. Now go, I'll be here when you get back."

We finally resigned. "Fine. We should be back soon. Have fun, I guess."

"Be safe, kittens." She smiled before disappearing into a shadow. Sometimes I wonder if Bast is bi-polar. (I think the answer is probably.)

With no baboon to escort us this time, we wandered the halls of the university, searching for something familiar. Unlike the total chaos the was Thoth's lab, everything appeared to be spotless.

We almost gave up, but then we heard it. Augh! Uh! The sound of baboons.

"This way!" Carter dashed down a corridor, closer to the primate noises. Zia and I ran after him, hoping to keep him in sight. For someone extremely uncoordinated, and slightly out of shape, he runs fast.

We rounded one last corner and ran right into the god of knowledge himself. Small words fell off of his lab coat with his every movement, turning into small, various items. His blond hair looked recently electrocuted and his kaleidoscopic eyes were brimmed with suspicion.

"Kanes." He muttered before straightening up. "What brings you here again?"

"We come bearing a gift." Zia said smoothly.

His eyes lit up like a child's on Christmas. "Well then! Come into my office, and get off of the floor, Pharaoh Kane. It isn't very regal."

Carter hauled himself up from the ground, having taken the brunt of slamming into the god, and followed embarrassedly.

Thoth led us to a large, cluttered classroom and gestured for us to take a seat. "What is it."

I looked meaningfully at Carter, who promptly reached into the Duat, (I still haven't mastered that), and pulled out the box.

"In exchange for her assistance, Ma'at had us make a delivery." As soon as I had said Ma'at, he snatched the package out of Carter's hands and gently opened the lid. Thoth first pulled out a small card, trimmed in lace and decorated with hearts and a touch of glitter.

"She remembered." Thoth smiled softly, carefully closing the card and laying it on a clear spot of a nearby table.

"Remembered what?" Carter furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.

"Our anniversary, the day I became her consort and scribe." He answered proudly.

"Consort? Don't you mean married? " I rolled my eyes.

"No. I meant what I said." He huffed icily.

"Then what is a consort?" I scoffed. I knew it was unwise to mock a god, but our deal had been done- there was no backing out now.

"A consort is the spouse of a royal or elite member of society, but not royal or elite themselves." You could always trust Carter to step in as the human dictionary.

"You don't consider yourself royal?" Zia inquired. "You're the eldest son of Ra, the sun god himself. I'd consider that royal."

Thoth ignored my disdain and Zia's doubts. Instead, he was transfixed by the yellowed papyrus rolled in his hands. He exerted the slightest of pressure on it, caressing the paper gently with his fingertips. "I do not lord over a great realm. Ra lords over all of Egypt, Nut the sky, Geb the earth, Shu the air, Osiris the underworld, and Ma'at the Duat. I would have been next in line for the throne if Ra had retired of his own accord, but he did not, and Horus is instead; such is the way of things."

Carter gave a not-so-subtle glare to everyone, conveying the need to drop the subject. "So, what did she give you for this monumental occasion?"

"The Scroll of Shadows. It is one of the few that I don't have in my library." He replied absentmindedly. "What did she promise you in return for making the delivery?"

"A set of scales to measure order versus chaos." Carter replied promptly. "Ma'at said you would have them here."

Thoth finally laid his scroll back in the antique box to scan the area. "I'll be back. Take the door to the left, and then the third one to the right to find the baboons. They're playing basketball; you may join them, if you wish." More word-objects sprung up in his wake, tumbling of his lab coat and transforming. Crawdads, minnows, and worms wriggled on the floor before a pair of ibis flocked to the feast.

"I didn't say you could take a break." He called over his shoulder. The great birds jolted away, and gazed guiltily at their half-finished meal before gliding back to their computers. Click, click, thump. The sound of over a hundred ibis beaks frantically clacking against keys was now near-deafening.

"Come on." I tugged at the couple's linked arms, and led the way to the baboon basketball court.

Thoth's overgrown monkeys didn't remember me, but clearly remembered Carter, as they shoved him into a bleacher and grunted what I assumed was baboon for "No!" Another primate handed him a flip chart, obviously saying. "Here, you can keep score instead."

The baboons's version of war raged on for what felt like hours, until finally, Thoth stepped through the doors. He was wringing his hands embarrassedly, and a pink blush lit up his face. Everyone turned to stare at him upon his arrival, which only served to make the god even more uncomfortable. "I can't find it." He finally blurted sheepishly.

Yay! Another chapter done. I don't know why, but I don't particularly like this chapter. I kind of think it lacks excitement. What do you guys think? Let me know in the reviews!
