Disclaimer: Chapter 1
The Quarterfinal Rounds
"Bulma did you see us!?" Goku yelled out to his blue haired friend. He and Krillin were running to the group after being allowed their short break before the next matches.
"I sure did, I was cheering all of you on." She said smiling at the excited boy.
"Really? Thanks!" Goku said putting on a goofy grin and rubbing the back of his head, in his trademark Son grin.
Krillin looked around the group. "Hey where is Master Roshi?" He asked not seeing his martial arts master.
"The old man took off after you guys went to start your fights. Said he had a better view of the fights." Oolong said looking bored again.
"We don't know where he ran off to." Bulma said.
"Hey everyone." Master Roshi called from behind them.
"Master Roshi, we got into the final rounds!" Krillin said, not being able to contain his excitement from winning in the elimination rounds.
The old hermit nodded. "I know, I was watching you two."
Goku scratched his head. "Well how could you do that if only fighters were allowed inside?"
"I was watching from a secret place that I can't tell you." Master Roshi said quickly.
"When does your next fight start?" Bulma asked ignoring the previous conversation.
"Well the announcer guy said that he would call us over when it was about to begin." Krillin said.
"Yeah, and we get to fight in the main arena now." Goku said with another big grin.
"Great, I will make sure I get front row seats!" Bulma said giving him a thumbs up. "Where is Vegeta at?" She asked.
Both Krillin and Goku jabbed their thumbs behind them. In the direction they were indicating stood Vegeta in the shadows of a building leaning up against the wall with a scowl set firm on his face. He didn't look like he was going to be moving anytime soon.
"He doesn't really like being around people a lot." Krillin pointed out in his short time around the Saiyan. "Or talk much for that reason."
"But he is really good at fighting!" Goku interrupted. "Did you see all his matches? He didn't even half to touch his opponents, except Yamcha." He pointed out.
"Oh Yamcha! Is he alright?" Puar asked frantically.
Yamcha had been taken to the onsite medical center and he had yet to come out. They were all waiting to hear from him. It didn't look like much but the one hit he received was enough to almost knock him out.
"He will be fine." They all looked at Master Roshi who spoke in his wise old man voice. "The only thing that is hurting him now is his pride. He is upset with himself for losing so easily to an opponent that he had no chance of beating."
Vegeta, who could hear their conversation, looked at the old man in confusion. How would he know how strong Vegeta truly was by just watching him fight the other weaklings? Vegeta thought it best to keep an eye on the old man now. He was obviously more than he appeared to be.
"Hey guys." Yamcha said as he walked over to the group with his head down and his hands in his pockets.
"Yamcha! I'm so glad you are okay!" Puar cried out flying at Yamcha.
"More or less." He said in a defeated voice.
"Don't worry about it Yamcha, I don't think I would have lasted even half that long." Krillin tried to reassure the moping man.
"Yeah but I didn't expect him to be that strong." He said walking over and sitting on a bench near them. He closed his eyes and let out a sigh. "I guess I wasn't nearly as strong as I thought I was."
"You beat yourself up because you thought that you could beat a man you knew nothing about. You lost because you did not count on the fact that there is always someone stronger than you, and you can never stop improving yourself." Master Roshi said, offering some wisdom.
'Freeza,' Vegeta cringed as he absently thought of the tyrant when the old turtle hermit spoke. There was no lie in the words he spoke as far as Vegeta saw it.
"Yeah I know that now." Yamcha said propping his head up on one hand and looking far in the distance.
"Were you hurt bad Yamcha?" Bulma asked. She was concerned for his wellbeing of course. After all she wasn't as cold hearted as people made her out to be. It was that she just cared for Vegeta slightly more.
"No, I only had a few cracked ribs, nothing serious." He said still feeling down.
Vegeta watched silently as his mind reeled. 'Why do they show compassion for him? He is obviously weaker than the rest of them, but they try to rebuild his confidence.' His eyes narrowed at his inner stupor. 'Perhaps they want him to improve still. Make him keep training so that he could fight another day.' Vegeta scoffed at his own thoughts. 'That is nothing but weakness for them and him. No wonder earthlings are weak.'
"Will the eight fighters in the World Martial Arts tournament please report to the main building." The announcement came out from the speakers and everyone heard it.
"See you later guys!" Goku said as he began running in the opposite direction.
"Goku, wait for me!" Krillin called out after him as he ran to catch up.
"Come on Vegeta!" Goku yelled over his shoulder as he passed the stoic Saiyan.
Vegeta rolled his eyes and began following the two boys to the building they had come from.
The others waved and said goodbye. Master Roshi stood silently for a moment. "You all go ahead. I am going to see if I can find a better spot." Master Roshi said as he walked off in a different direction.
"Where do you think he really goes?" Oolong said watching the old man leave.
"Who cares? If he doesn't want to watch the fight than that is his fault." Bulma said leading the others to the arena to watch the match.
"Alright everyone, for the final fights you each will draw a number to determine where you will end up on the main bracket." The announcer said. "The numbers will be one through eight and I will call you up one at a time. First up, Goku."
Goku had a determined look on his face as he walked up and reached into the box. He grabbed a ball and pulled it from the box. He held it up for the tournament staff to see. "Alright, Goku is number eight." The announcer said writing it down. "Next up Krillin."
Each fighter went to grab their number each time their name was called and the bracket was set.
"Alright here is the list of the fights!" The announcer began. "Fight one, Krillin versus Bacterian. Fight two, Jackie Chun versus Vegeta. Fight three, Nam versus Ranfan, Fight four, Giran versus Goku."
Krillin made a disgusted face as he looked over at his opponent. The guy was huge and he smelled worse than anything imaginable. He didn't like his matchup. But it could have been worse, he could have been up against Vegeta in the first round.
Vegeta narrowed his eyes at the old man who called himself Jackie Chun. He looked very familiar but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Vegeta was going to be very cautious when dealing with him later on.
Goku looked up at his tall dinosaur like opponent and Giran stared back. In his mind Goku knew he would have to beat him fairly quickly if he was going to do any better than Yamcha when going up against Vegeta.
The first match had ended with Krillin being announced as the winner. It had been a hard fought, and very grotesque, battle between him and the smelly Bacterian but Krillin won. Of course it was only possible after Goku reminded him that he didn't have a nose so that he couldn't smell Bacterian's foul odor.
"Did you see that Goku? I totally beat him." Krillin said giving his friend a high five.
"Yeah it's a good thing you don't have a nose right?" Goku said laughing.
The two laughed at Krillin's bizarre match when the announcer came to the middle of the ring.
"Next up in the quarterfinal matches, a man who has had no trouble at all plowing his way through the competition without breaking a sweat. Please welcome Vegeta!"
Vegeta walked from behind the two as he made his way to the far end of the ring. The crowd cheered for him but he ignored them.
"Yay Vegeta!" Bulma screamed as he walked onto the ring. She was jumping up and down cheering for her "perfect boyfriend."
"His opponent, a man who has had an almost equally easy time getting here as his moves are formidable so don't let his appearance fool you. Please welcome Jackie Chun!"
Vegeta watched as the old man slowly walked over to his side of the dueling ring. He began to note how calm he looked and wondered if this Jackie Chun saw him fight, or if he was just another overconfident fool. When he turned to look at Vegeta, he saw how his face was calm, showing no fear or excitement. Vegeta narrowed his eyes as he was confused as to how this fighter would do.
"I wonder who this Jackie Chun is. He doesn't seem afraid of Vegeta." Krillin said looking between the two.
"I dunno but I wonder how he will do." Goku said as they watched in anticipation.
On the side of the arena Bulma kept on cheering for Vegeta, much to the annoyance of Puar, Oolong, and Yamcha, who were all right next to her.
"Come on Vegeta, you can whip this old guy!" She yelled.
Vegeta's eyes flashed towards her and he made a low growl in his throat. She could be so damn annoying at times.
The announcer went to the side of the arena and the bell went off signaling for the two to fight. Everyone stood in silence waiting for them to do battle but neither fighter moved.
Vegeta was staring at Jackie Chun with his arms at his sides and he stared right back with his arms folded behind his back. In each of his previous fights Vegeta had never been the one to charge his opponent but this one was different. He waited, just like Vegeta.
After a few more seconds Vegeta got impatient and took a step forward and Jackie Chun did the same. Vegeta frowned as each step he took the old man took a step as well. It was only a matter of seconds before they were only two feet apart from each other.
In a flash Vegeta swung his leg at his opponent's feet in an attempt to sweep his feet out from under him. Vegeta was surprised when the old man effortlessly jumped up avoiding the hit. Granted, Vegeta didn't try nearly as hard as he ought to, he didn't want to break his feet in one move.
Vegeta leapt forward at the same time the old man touched back on the ground. He swung his fist at the head of his opponent but was shocked once more when the punch went right through him. The force of his attempted attack made him fall forward. He quickly planted his hands on the ground and flipped himself over, landing back on his feet. He looked across the way to see Jackie Chun standing in a relaxed position.
"I'm afraid I will not be as easy to defeat." Jackie Chun said to Vegeta.
Vegeta's frown flashed instantly into a grin as he stood up straight, clenching his fists at the side of him. "Good, I would hate to be disappointed."
Jackie Chun finally set into a martial arts stance as his eyes bore into Vegeta. The crowd was confused as to what had happened and the announcer was trying to make sense of it as the two blocked them all out. To them it was just the two in that arena.
Vegeta had noticed that Jackie Chun used the afterimage technique to escape his punch previously. 'So he is a little skilled.' Vegeta thought. 'Let's see what other tricks he's got up his sleeve.'
Vegeta's image fazed away as he used the afterimage technique as well. He appeared in front of Jackie Chun and threw a slow punch. Just as he thought Jackie Chun used the afterimage technique once more. He looked up to see the old man coming down with his foot directed at Vegeta. Vegeta went to block the kick and deliver a punch but was again surprised to find that his punch went right through the image of the man.
Behind him, Jackie Chun swung his foot around and delivered a kick to the back of Vegeta's head. Vegeta felt himself start to fall forward as his face was full of shock. He caught himself and turned to see the old man in his martial arts stance once again.
"You had better start to use at least a little of your power Vegeta. Or you will be surprised this entire match." Jackie Chun said.
Vegeta glared daggers into the man. Throughout the tournament he had been only using one-one hundredth of his power and he still went really easy. It appeared he would have to stop going easy but not unleash any more power, not yet. He was not hurt at all, just shocked. It appeared that Vegeta had indeed underestimated the old man. Vegeta decided it was just by mere chance the old man was surprising him. The fact that this race was so weak had made him unprepared as to what to expect from someone who actually had some skill.
He didn't say a word as he jumped at the old man, no longer trying to be easy but still using a fraction of his power. He lunged his left fist at his opponent and Jackie Chun jumped over Vegeta. Vegeta quickly planted his foot and jumped after him. He grabbed Jackie Chun's foot and swung him around, throwing him back down to the arena. The old man recovered and flipped around, landing on his feet. Vegeta hit the ground and leapt back at him.
Jackie Chun did the same and they both raised their fists at each other's face. The crowd was stunned when both their images seemed to fade away as if they were never there. On the opposite side of the ring they reappeared. Jackie Chun had his right arm extended in an attempt to punch Vegeta and the Saiyan Prince blocked it with his left arm. He pushed the fist away from his body and advanced on the unguarded old man. Vegeta brought his right knee up and hit his opponent in the abdomen.
Jackie Chun held his gut in pain and Vegeta came up behind him, with his back to the old man. He brought his left elbow back and hit Jackie Chun in the back of the head. Jackie Chun fell to his hands and knees in pain and Vegeta used this to bring his leg around for a kick to send him out of the ring. His foot went right through his opponent and Vegeta stood back on both feet as it seemed he was the only one in the arena now.
Vegeta's eyes stayed glued to the spot where the old man once was. On his left Jackie Chun reappeared throwing another fist at him. Vegeta didn't move his eyes as he caught the punch with ease. "Is this the best you humans have to offer?" Vegeta said squeezing the other fighter's fist. "Pathetic."
But, Jackie Chun didn't cringe in pain and Vegeta squeezed harder. Jackie Chun just stared into the eyes of Vegeta. "Are you angry at me for being weak? Or angry at yourself for being too strong?"
Vegeta widened his eyes at the question and Jackie Chun pushed off the ground and released himself from the Saiyan's grasp. The old master threw off his shirt and pulled his fists to his sides. "It seems I should stop playing around with you. I will show you the true power of a master of martial arts." Jackie Chun said as his muscles seemed to grow. He looked to be in pretty great shape for an old man but that was before his power up. After that, his muscles were bigger and he looked a bit taller than before. 'This is as strong as I can get without doing my max power up,' the old master thought. 'I hope I can last long enough to see how he truly fights.'
"So, you can increase your power?" Vegeta said slightly amused. "Alright let's see what you are made of."
The two went at each other again and met in the middle. They both threw a punch that they both blocked. Then they both went for a kick that they both blocked once again. Vegeta quickly threw another punch and hit Jackie Chun in the jaw. He was still putting the vast restrictions on himself so he wasn't surprised when the old man didn't fall down. Instead he threw another punch of his own and connected with Vegeta's gut. Vegeta clenched his teeth and swung his other fist across and wasn't surprised when the old man used the afterimage technique again.
Vegeta turned around and looked up just in time to see Jackie Chun's fist. This punch had a lot of momentum and Vegeta recoiled fully at the blow. He didn't feel any pain from it but his body was reacting due to the extreme power restriction he was using. Jackie Chun advanced and went to kick the Saiyan Prince but he grabbed his leg and spun around throwing him across the arena. Vegeta went back on the offensive only to hit air where the old man once was. He clenched his teeth and turned back around only to stop.
The old master had his back to the crowd and had both his hands pressed together at the side of his body. He had set this up so that he could test one more ability on the Saiyan. He focused all of his energy into his hands as he called out. "Kame…"
Vegeta narrowed his eyes looking at the old man. He had gotten so carried away with his assault that he had fallen into some sort of plan his opponent had made. Vegeta had gotten angry after that one punch had surprised him that he let it cloud his judgment. "Ha…me…!" Vegeta saw the blue glow of a ball forming in Jackie Chun's hand and instantly knew what he was doing. It should have been obvious since Vegeta was not in the area of where the crowd was and how far away his opponent was.
In a quick decision Vegeta powered up little by little until he was at half of his true power. The faint clear flash of aura around him was a sign that his power had grown in a matter of milliseconds. And it was just in time.
"Ha!" Jackie Chun shouted as he unleashed his Kamehameha. He pushed his connected hands forward and the blue energy blast flew towards the Saiyan Prince. It was a giant Kamehameha that was bigger than Vegeta. When it reached him it swallowed his entire body.
While this was happening the crowd was still speechless and the announcer didn't know what to say. "It appears Jackie Chun is chanting something at his opponent. I'm not sure what to make of this folks. Wait, it appears there is a blue light forming in the fighter's hands. Yes, it is getting bigger! Vegeta is just standing there, apparently dazed by this light show trick. And, oh my, Jackie Chun has thrown this bright blue light at Vegeta!"
Goku was leaning forward from his spot waiting to see what was going to happen, as did Krillin.
Bulma cringed and her eyes widened at the spectacle. She could only watch in horror and hope for the best.
As the Kamehameha reached Vegeta he didn't move. His head was slightly lowered as his face was a look of boredom and determination. At the last moment he held his hand up to the blue blast. The Kamehameha hit his hand and exploded causing the ground around the arena to shake. The blast left the ground around it, in the arena, black and destroyed. A giant smoke cloud covered the area as the explosion went away.
Jackie Chun breathed heavily as he was exhausted with trying to keep up with the Saiyan and then firing a Kamehameha that big. Sweat fell from his brow as he scanned the smoke cloud.
Everyone waited in silence as the smoke began to clear. When the dark shadow of Vegeta appeared everyone gasped. He still had his arm extended out where he had blocked the Kamehameha. When the smoke went away completely his gloved hand was revealed to have no damage whatsoever. Even though the ground all in front of him was nearly wiped out he stood unaffected. The faint sound of wind could be heard coming from his body as the clear aura still rose from his body, a sign of his power. He still had the same half-bored half-fearsome look in his eyes as he slowly lowered his hand.
"Is that all?" Vegeta asked in a dejected tone. His eyes held no emotion as the arena erupted in cheers from the crowd. He thought about powering down but the old man was pissing him off. He held up his right hand and smirked faintly. "If not, then it's my turn."
Vegeta's smirk turned into a blank sense of shock as the old man walked up to him slowly with his arms behind his back. He stopped the concentration of power in his hand but still held it up as the old man walked over to him.
"I had no intention of beating you, young warrior." Vegeta frowned when he said that. "I was merely seeing if you were as strong as I thought. And, you were more. I forfeit, and you win." The old man said simply before he jumped off the arena and onto the ground. It was a ring out.
Vegeta stared in disbelief. 'You coward!' He thought. How could someone just drop out of a fight like that? He narrowed his eyes. Was this all that earth had to offer? Weaklings and cowards? No, the old man was smart, he did this for a reason.
He stood perfectly still just going through his thoughts as the announcer claimed him as a winner. His eyes followed the old man who walked around to the back and disappeared. Vegeta walked calmly after him when the announcer was done. He went around the back to a secluded place where the old man was waiting for him.
"I knew your curiosity would get the better of you." Jackie Chun said as Vegeta stared at him.
"You say that as if I am predictable." Vegeta said, his frown growing darker.
"You are, and, you are not. However, you didn't come here to talk about your predictability." The old man said.
They shared a moment of silence as Vegeta relaxed a bit before he spoke. "You are the old man, the martial arts master, are you not?" Vegeta said waiting for a reaction.
He was surprised when the old man responded in a very calm way. "I am Master Roshi, yes. I entered the tournament to make sure my students did not win. But now I see that I no longer have to worry about that with you here." Master Roshi said.
Vegeta narrowed his eyes. "I am not some sort of practice session for Kakarot and the bald man."
Master Roshi nodded. "Yes I knew you would say that. I also entered the tournament in hopes of being the first to fight you in a match. I see that I grossly underestimated your ki ability. But if you do this one thing for me I will offer you some assistance in terms of battle."
Vegeta raised an eyebrow at the old man's offer. "I do not need you to teach me anything. You weak, old, man." Vegeta spat out with venom.
"I never said that. I said I would offer you assistance. And I can tell that you are the type of person who teaches themselves. So if you heed my words you can greatly improve your ability." Master Roshi said.
Vegeta's face switched into utter confusion. "Why would you help me, when all I plan to do is destroy your pathetic planet one day?"
Master Roshi couldn't help the chuckle that left his mouth. "We will see about that." That made Vegeta's face turn back into pure anger. "But I must admit that I may be going senile by offering you this. However, I believe that you will not be the only one benefitting from this." Master Roshi's eyes went behind Vegeta. Vegeta looked over his shoulder to see Goku in the arena and stretching, getting ready for his match with the dinosaur thing. His gaze returned to the old man.
"Why would I help Kakarot?" Vegeta did not want to help the young Saiyan. Truth be told, he hated the fact that the small fry was able to beat him so badly in the forest that one night. If only he hadn't been worrying about the blue haired girl…
"Because, you want some form of competition on this planet. Even if it is Goku, you would relish the opportunity to battle someone at least half as strong as you. Am I right?" Vegeta's scowl softened and he pondered this. "Besides, we both know you will be on this planet for a while longer."
Vegeta clenched his teeth and looked at the ground. The old man was right, he was going to be stuck on earth for a long time. And for some reason, he wasn't THAT mad about it. Vegeta looked back up at the old man. "What do you want?" He said darkly.
"I would like you to just simply beat my students, without killing them. As for Goku, give him the thrill of a fight. As you know oh so well." Master Roshi said turning around and walking away. "After the tournament, I will uphold my end of the deal." He called out as he was walking away.
Vegeta watched him go then turned around to watch Goku's fight. It was not really even a deal. Vegeta was going to do that anyway but now he would get something in return. The match Vegeta fought went back through his mind and he thought it was interesting that a human could learn how to harness his energy and push it through one point in his body. Maybe the old man did have something to offer.
As Vegeta watched Goku's opponent forfeit as well, once he saw how strong Goku was, he kept thinking. 'What am I going to do after this?'
Fin.
A/N: Well there you have it. Master Roshi forfeits when he sees that the Kamehameha wave has no effect. And if your wanting to call foul on the fight you have to note that Vegeta was using only one-one hundredth of his power so… yeah. Anyway Vegeta never felt any pain, he was just surprised each time Master Roshi got a hit in. Master Roshi never stood a real chance anyway. So how's the rest of the fight going to go? What will transpire between Vegeta and Bulma? Will anything happen? What will Vegeta do next? Find out on the next episode of Dragon B- I mean, This Wasn't Supposed to Happen!
Oh and here are some estimates of what their power levels were during the fight. It is all just estimates done by me so take it easy if they are wrong.
Vegeta, one-one hundredth of true power: 180
Vegeta, half-power: 9001…hint, hint
Master Roshi/Jackie Chun: 110
Master Roshi/Jackie Chun, Increased power: 160
Master Roshi/Jackie Chun, Increased power Kamehameha: 400
And as always please review and tell me what you think everyone.
