Chapter 7
The first pirate to appear in the little clearing where the group, consisting of Eve, Peter, the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell had gathered in, was a long and lanky guy. He was pale, but his cheeks were colored with an angry red. He wore a rather pompous hat, so Eve briefly wondered if this was the pirate captain. But on closer inspection she noticed that the hat missed the feather a typical pirate captain was supposed to have, so Eve hoped this was an ordinary ship mate. His clothes were at least four sizes too big for him and he had a big pointy sword fastened on his hip with a red piece of cloth.
Eve let out a small "Eep" when she saw that very real, very sharp weapon.
He squinted his small eyes when he heard her and looked in their direction.
"I- I do believe I found 'em cap'n!" he yelled behind him, and then he squinted in the direction of the group again.
Even though they were a stone throw away from each other, the pirate's eyes didn't focus on the group. Instead, his eyes kept roaming over their forms, before switching to the greenery around them again.
Eve could now understand the choice of clothing of Peter Pan and the boys, for they all wore the colors of the forest, either something brown, green, or black.
Eve however, hadn't prepared for a near blind pirate when she went to sleep that night and was wearing pink pajamas.
She gulped when she realized that she was wearing a very bright color. It was the girly kind of pink that made her shiver when somebody wore it, the kind of pink that little girls wore, the kind of pink where princess dresses were made of.
In her defense, it was an old pajama that once, had been so big she could almost live in it. And now it could be used as something between either a long shirt or a short dress.
Still, Eve blushed and hid behind Peter, who was just broad enough to hide behind.
Once she did, the tiny eyes of the pirate immediately roamed further away from the group. He looked around himself some more, before he looked behind him again and took a deep breath.
"Cap'n, I do believe I lost them!" He then yelled.
Eve felt thorn between laughing, face-palming and crying. She eventually decided to stick with making herself even smaller when she heard an enraged shout in the distance. She couldn't hear exactly what was being shouted, but the man in front of them answered with an "Aye aye, cap'n!" and then walked in their general direction with a determined face.
Eve pulled at Peter, silently conveying that now would be a good time to run.
But Peter, being as he was, only put his hands on his hips, threw is head in his neck and proceeded to laugh loudly.
Eve flinched at the noise and at the gaze that now snapped back to them. The lost boys didn't seem bothered and even joined in laughing. After Peter was done laughing, he jumped into the air again and floated towards his group of make-shift fighters.
"Alright, soldiers. Spread!" He shouted, after which the boys immediately scattered while still laughing or giggling.
Eve didn't know how they did it, but in the blink of an eye she had lost sight of half of them already. She looked around wildly, saw a leg disappearing in one bush, heard giggling in the other, and quickly decided to also hide herself in the growth
She dashed to the biggest looking bush and hid behind it. Looking sideward, she spotted Bird behind the tree next to her, trying to muffle his laughter with his hand and failing.
Eve tried to signal to him and luckily he noticed her. He beamed at her and then put a finger in front of his mouth: "Shhhh!"
The only one that was making noise of the two was him, so Eve gave him an awkward smile and nodded hesitantly that yes, she would be silent. Bird then focused on the clearing again and Eve followed his gaze.
She found a spot through the greenery where she could see the pirate. She gulped and shuffled backwards, hoping that as long as she didn't see him, he wouldn't spot her.
But her thoughts on pirates were distracted when the light buzzing of Tinkerbell reached her right ear. Eve looked in said direction and saw Tinkerbell floating not an arm length away of her. The fairy started buzzing harder after Eve had spotted her, then floated a circle around her head before taking off deeper inside the forest.
When Eve didn't follow immediately, Tinkerbell stopped and buzzed again, sounding impatient. So Eve, wanting to befriend this mythical creature - because, well, it was a mythical creature - followed the little fairy obediently, all to gladly leaving the clearing behind her.
Other voices soon joined in, and she guessed the other pirates had come into the clearing, but soon even those voices faded away until she only heard the chirping of foreign birds, the rustling of the tropical trees and the buzzing of a certain fairy.
They must have traveled sometime before Eve deemed it safe again to talk, and she asked with an uncertain voice: "Where are we going?"
She didn't expect a vocal answer from the fairy, but she hoped the little creature could at least made it clear with hand signs or something.
Alas, the creature only paused in her way for a beat, before flying forward again. This time faster than before.
That little thing sure could fly fast.
Eve soon was running after her, trying to at the same time watch the forest floor for treacherous things to fall over and the sparkling thing in front of her. Meanwhile, she wondered if this was the best course of action. She unconsciously slowed down when she thought about how in the stories, Tinkerbell tried to kill Wendy. She came to a full stop when she realized that. If the stories were true, Tinkerbell was a murderer.
So, to escape a group of probably murderous pirates, she had come to follow a murdering fairy? Because that was so much safer?
She should have stayed with Peter. For all his jokes and childishness, he seemed the safest of them all. That said something considering he was probably now fighting with old men.
Being in thought, she didn't notice when Tinkerbell came closer and she jumped when the buzzing was at her ear again.
Where was Peter when she needed him?
