Chapter 1

Meriwether College Prep.

It was seven in the morning and I was standing in a fire escape. Yeah, you read that right a fire escape, but it was in front of a certain boy's window, which makes it sound much worse. I was wearing my Yankees hat so he wouldn't see me, but I had to warn him monsters were coming.

"Percy! You're going to be late!" a woman, most likely Percy's mother, yelled.

I backed away from the window and quickly texted Chiron. Most half bloods don't have phones, it attracts way too many monsters. I'm different though; I can handle some monsters. After I was done texting him, I slid the phone into my back pocket and assessed where I was going.

Percy had a new school: Meriwether College Prep. The school was different; it was a progressive school that's supposed to help ADHD and dyslexia kids, like us.

I walked there easily, dodging the crazy New York traffic, and followed Percy, trying to find a moment he was alone. So far, I was unsuccessful.

His first class was English, and the entire year they had been studying Lord of the Flies, so his final exam they had to stand outside with no adult supervision. While they were standing outside I witnessed a brutal wedgie contest, two pebble fights, and a tackle basketball game held by the grade bully, a kid named Matt Sloan. The way he bossed the other kids around like they meant nothing to him made me so mad I wanted to give him a wedgie. I was bored basically the entire time.

The second class was science. In science the final exam was to mix two chemicals until they exploded. Percy's science partner, and only friend at this school, was a cyclops. This caught me by surprise. How a cyclops got into the school, why Percy couldn't see it, and why it hadn't attacked him yet was completely unknown to be. But, needless to say cyclops are extremely clumsy, so Percy and the cyclops were the first ever group to ace the exam under thirty seconds. The teacher called the hazardous removal squad, which she surely must have on speed dial.

In Social Studies, my new favorite class, they drew longitude and latitude maps. I almost laughed out loud when I realized this; there was no way Percy could draw a longitude and latitude map. Percy was bored, as always, so he opened his notebook and saw the picture I sent him a while ago. I smiled, surprised and happy he kept it with him. Matt, the bully, then leaned over and noticed the picture.

"Is that your girlfriend?" Matt asked, taunting Percy. He ripped out the picture and looked at it with his buddies. Percy tried to grab the picture, but he couldn't reach it. Matt ripped it up and make it into spit wads. Now, more than ever, I wanted to kill that kid myself.

The next class was gym. It was now or never. Percy had to get out; I had to rescue him before it was too late.

In the hall, I whispered "Percy!"

He turned around quickly and searched the hall. I stood and waited for him to see me before he walked into the locker room, forgetting I had my invisibility cap on. He quickly scanned right over me and made a highly confused face before walking straight into the locker room. I sighed out of frustration and went through the girls locker room to the gym.

From the other student's complaining, I learned a man named Coach Nunley was the teacher. He was much too busy to teach; he was quite interested in his Sports Illustrated magazine. The boy I wanted to strangle, Matt, organized the teams. His team was of course the "great" team, while Percy's team was full of useless nerds and Tyson.

Matt started the game and, unfortunately for everyone else, that's when things got interesting. I watched in horror Matt's so called "friends" started morphing into the last thing any of us wanted to see, Laistrygonians Giants.

With a loud BOOM one of the giants slammed the locker room doors shut and seemed to laugh as he watched the rest of the class scramble.

"Let them go!" Percy yelled, trying to look bold.

Instead the giant waved his hand. The red rubber balls on the centerline, turned into bronze fireballs.

Both Percy and I's eyes widened.

"Coach!" Percy yelled in alarm, looking over.

The coach didn't do anything. I, however, popped up and tried to run towards them to help. Frustrated, I screamed; I was stuck, not able to move from where I was. My jacket was stuck on the bleachers. No one could hear my scream over the fireball commotion. A giant threw a fireball an inch above my head and I ducked just in time before I turned into a giant kabob. I pulled on my jacket desperately, looking up as a giant explosion shook the room. Percy was now standing in front of the locker room doors, right where a giant decided to throw a fireball. Percy ducked just in time and the wall exploded. The rest of the kids scrambled for the opening escaped, running as far away as they could. It was just Percy, Tyson, the giants, and me. I gave one last tug with all my strength and the jacket came free, only with a giant rip in the side. I took off my hat and shoved it in my bag, killing a giant with my knife then running as fast as I could to wear Percy was. The last giant was about to fry him, but, you're welcome Percy, I stabbed him right in the gut. He exploded into monster dust.

"That girl... That's the girl!" Matt said pointing to me.

I punched him in the face.

"Lay off my friend!" I yelled at him.

"Annabeth!" Percy exclaimed, "How did you... how long have you..."

"Pretty much all morning," I said putting my knife away, "I've been trying to find a time to talk to you, but you were never alone."

"The shadow I saw this morning! That was...," He blushed,"You looked in my bedroom?"

I couldn't help but blush too.

"No time to explain!" I said, tugging on his arm.

A woman ran in with security guards.

"There!" she yelled, pointing to us.

"Meet me outside and bring him." I whispered pointing to Tyson, I slipped on my invisibility hat and ran outside.
