Hi guys! This is my first story I've ever published. It's short and not real great, but any reviews would be super. Please don't be too mean. I don't own Carlisle or anyone else. They belong to Stephine Meyer.

Even the Strong Have a Breaking Point

Carlisle looked serious. I hadn't seen him this way in years, so I decided to confront him. He didn't speak, he simply took my hand and ushered me into our bedroom. He sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled me into his arms. I was growing concerned. "Are you alright?" I asked. "I- I am worried about the upcoming visit." He said "I don't want it to come to a fight." I touched his cheek gently, trying to reassure him. "It won't come to that. It can't. We've done nothing wrong." He just shrugged. "Esme, if it comes to a fight, I want you to leave. I can't even think about you getting hurt." I stood up. "I can handle myself. I don't need to run. Besides if it comes to a fight, I want to fight and if necessary, die with my family." He winced at the word "die". "Esme, please, I don't want you to talk about death. What if it comes to a fight? What if you die? Do you know what that would do to me?" His voice is still calm, but there's a desperate edge to it. "What if you die?" I ask, ignoring his questions. "What would I do?" He is silent. "Don't you think I'd want to be there?" I added. That's when he broke down. He fell to his knees, sobs racking his body. Everything he had been holding in finally came out. I knelt down next to him and held him. "It's all my fault. If anyone is killed, I will be to blame. They are my friends. They wouldn't be here if I hadn't asked them. Alice and Jasper would still be here. My family is falling apart and I can't fix it." I rub his back and try to quiet him. "It is not your fault, it will never be your fault. They wouldn't have come without you. They all know the risk. Please, don't blame yourself. Alice and Jasper will come back." I know my words are probably futile, but I tried. I just hold him for a while. "You can do this Carlisle. You are strong, but even the strong have a breaking point." I whisper. He takes a deep breath and nods. I help him get to his feet. "Thank you." He says. "We should go back downstairs." I take his hand and look up at him. "We're going to get through this." I say. "I promise."
