"So what you're telling me is that the locket is fake, yes?" Sheik demanded. Zephir nodded shyly. It wasn't his fault that the locket wasn't real, but he still felt as though he failed a simple mission. Leaf, who was sitting to his right, rubbed his hand softly with his fingers.
"I wasn't aware of the fact that it was a fake until after I had already taken the potion. Even then, I didn't dwell on it because Voldemort had showed up immediately afterwards and all my attention was focused on him. Besides, I still wasn't feeling well. The potion was very strong." Zephir said quickly. Sheik looked towards his son and noticed the distress on his face. Zephir always worried his bottom lip with his teeth whenever he was anxious or scared. The fact that he was doing so right now meant he was worried.
"Zephir, I'm not mad at you. It was an honest mistake that any one of us could have made. All we need to do now is go find out who R.A.B. is. After that we can get the locket and then continue on as usual." Sheik said softly. Zephir let out a loud sigh of relief and grasped at Leaf's hand for comfort.
"So how are we going to find out who R.A.B. is? I mean he could be anyone. He could be dead for Din's sake!" Leaf said.
"First off, we can track his magical signature off of the note he left. It's very faint, but we can still use it to track him down. After we find him, it should be relatively easy to get the locket." Sheik said.
"Sheik is right boys. Use your aura sight to find the magical signature. It's good practice for future missions. It's how Sheik found you, Zephir." Impa said sternly. She pointed at the fake locket and told the boys to get started. Everyone switched to aura sight and noticed two auras. One was stronger than the other. The stronger one was obviously Zephir's so the other one had to be R.A.B.'s. Zephir thought it looked familiar for a moment, but he dismissed the idea as pure coincidence.
From there, the day continued on as usual. The Sheikah guarded the school, Drew taught flying lessons, Draco watched and the students learned. Zephir made sure to be extremely observant as he guarded the school. He kept his aura sight on and made sure to check every single student he came across for their magical signature. So far, he was having bad luck. None of the students' magical signatures were even remotely similar to the one on the locket. It was maddening. None of the other Sheikah had found anything either. They knew it was only the first day, but they were hoping that they could find something.
Lily had noticed that something was off with her oldest son at lunch that day. He was tense. Normally the Sheikah would be laughing along with Drew, but today he was silent. His hands clenched his fork tightly, he viciously stabbed his salad and, the most notable difference, nobody at the table was smiling or laughing. It set Lily on edge and she didn't like it. She decided that for once, she would be there for her son. She calmly walked over to the Sheikah table and was greeted with annoyed glares. She fumbled slightly, but then regained her composure and moved closer to Zephir.
"Erm…Hello. Is it okay if I borrow Zephir for a moment?" She asked timidly. Zephir stood up quickly and made his way over to Lily. He motioned for her to go and she led them both out of the Great Hall and into an empty hallway.
"What's bothering you?" Zephir was slightly taken aback. That was rather forward of her.
"Can you keep a secret?" Lily nodded eagerly. Zephir knew she was telling the truth and so he continued. "We are working to restore Voldemort's soul. He wasn't always completely insane. When he was younger, before he rose to power, he split his soul into several parts. His sanity slowly deteriorated until he became the monster you know today. His first ideas weren't terrible. They only became warped as time went on. We hope that if we restore his sanity, the war will end and there will finally be a balance between Light and Dark. You can't have more of one than the other. Dumbledore has ruined that precious balance and we need to bring balance to the world."
"That still doesn't explain what has you so tense and worked up." Lily retorted. Zephir shifted nervously on the spot. He knew it was probably a bad idea telling Lily about what the Sheikah were up to.
"Well, last night I went to go fetch another one of his soul pieces and upon my return, I noticed that the locket was fake. Someone already got the real locket and replaced it with a replica. I'm just upset because we don't know who took it. We've been trying to use the magical signature to get clues, but we haven't found anything. I know it's stupid to expect results on the first day, but still." Zephir said through clenched teeth. Bringing up the subject had only aggravated him further.
"Okay, well I can't say I know what you're going through because…well I don't. You're right. It is foolish to expect results right away. It might take you months until you get results, but however long it takes, do not give up. I hope that your..erm…father taught you how to persevere when things get difficult."
"Oh don't you worry. It took a lot of perseverance to get through training. One time dad made Leaf and I go out into the woods with only our weapons and water canisters for three days. Thanks though. You know… for trying to help me. I know you're trying make up for your past mistakes and it means a lot to me that you're making an effort." Lily smiled softly.
"I was wondering, could I- could I hug you? It probably seems like a very silly reques-" Lily was cut off by a body hitting hers. She looked down to find Zephir latched onto her. With a watery smile on her face, she slowly wrapped her arms around her estranged son.
Later
The Sheikah were all gathered in their common room once again. The fake locket was resting on the coffee table and everyone was sitting around it. Impa leaned forward and picked up the locket. She held it up to her face and narrowed her eyes.
"This damn locket has pissed me off more in the last 24 hours than that one time I had to stay in the muggle world for a week. I haven't found a single trace of the magical signature." Impa growled. Sheik put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. The locket was putting them all on edge. They had been snapping at each other all day and the students noticed as they tried to distance themselves from the Sheikah.
"We'll just have to be patient. I invited Sirius and Remus to visit if that's okay. They always knew how to cheer me up. I'm hoping that they can brighten the mood in here." Zephir said quietly. He was afraid to say anything wrong and set off everyone else in the room.
It wasn't often that Sheik would be in a bad mood. When he was though, everyone made sure to stay clear. Zephir was often witness to his rage. Sometimes while he would be studying ancient history, Sheik would come into the room grumbling to himself about whatever it was that was bothering him. Zephir would ask if he was okay and would only get a sharp reply as an answer. His dad would remain mostly silent for the rest of the day, except for the occasional grumble of course. His brows would be furrowed and his lips would be pulled down in a tight frown while he went about his day. Zephir learned to avoid his dad when he was angry as did the rest of the Sheikah village.
"Okay fine. When are they coming over?" Sheik grumbled quietly. Zephir shrunk back in his seat and curled into himself slightly. He was afraid of pissing anyone off.
"They said that they would try and be here around dinner time. If not, they'll be here after dinner. Is that okay?" He asked. Sheik nodded and stood up slowly. He patted Zephir's shoulder and then went upstairs to the loft. Everyone sighed and went about their before dinner activities.
Impa went to the training room and left Leaf and Zephir alone with each other. Now that the loveseat was free, Zephir moved over to it and sat down next to Leaf. Leaf opened his arms and Zephir curled up in his lap and let him run his fingers through his soft blond hair.
"So, how was your day?" Leaf said with a hint of a laugh. Everyone was having a bad day.
"Oh it was truly fantastic. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, I found no hint of the magical signature, and I saw a rainbow. How was your day?" Leaf laughed.
"It's better now that we're cuddling on this couch!" Leaf said with a smirk. It wasn't often that they got to be alone and just cuddle with each other so they took advantage of it whenever possible.
"Mm. You're definitely not wrong. Unfortunately for you, I'm fucking hungry. Shall we go get dinner?" Zephir suggested. He looked up into Leaf's red eyes and smiled.
After dinner, they had ended up back in the same position on the loveseat. Zephir was waiting for Sirius and Remus and while Sheik and Impa were sharpening their knives. No one was saying anything. They were all too annoyed to want to strike up a conversation. Finally, a small knock followed by a loud obnoxious one was heard. Zephir leaped off the couch and ran to the door. He threw the door open and it revealed his godfather and Remus.
"Yay you're here!" Zephir said enthusiastically. Sirius looked at him oddly and slowly moved into the room. He immediately noticed the tense atmosphere in the room.
"So… you all seem very lively today." The Sheikah looked up from their knife sharpening and glared at him before returning to their work. Sirius slowly turned to Zephir and raised a questioning eyebrow.
"We've been trying to track a certain magical signature and we haven't had any luck. It's very frustrating. Especially since the only hint we were given was the initials 'R.A.B.'." Zephir explained.
"Wait a second, R.A.B.? Those were my brother's initials! Regulus Arcturus Black! He died years ago, but I might be able to help!" Sirius now had the attention of every single Sheikah in the room. Sheik used his aura sight immediately and noticed that Sirius had a similar magical signature to the one on the locket.
"It's him. R.A.B. is Regulus. This is perfect. Now we just need to find out where he hid the real locket." Sheik said. He grabbed Sirius and Remus and shoved them onto the nearest couch. "I need you to tell me everything you know about your brother and this locket." Sheik said. There was a spark of recognition in Sirius' eyes. The Sheikah all moved closer.
"Well it does look kind of familiar. I think I've seen it somewhere around Grimmauld Place. Hold on one second. KREACHER!" Sirius shouted. The house-elf appeared with a loud pop. "Kreacher, have you seen this locket before?" Sirius pointed to the object in question.
"Kreacher has never seen this locket in his life." He said, though it was blatantly obvious that the house-elf was lying. He was looking everywhere, but at Sirius and was wringing his hands together.
"Do not lie to me Kreacher! Now, I'll ask you one more time. Have you seen this locket before?" Sirius demanded harshly.
"Yes master. It is Master Regulus's locket." Kreacher said reluctantly. Zephir intervened and moved in front of Sirius.
"There's another though isn't there? The real one right? It's very hard to destroy isn't it Kreacher? You've tried because your master demanded it of you and you couldn't destroy it. Isn't that right?" Zephir said excitedly. Kreacher nodded and Zephir's smile grew larger.
"Kreacher, go find the real locket and bring it back here now." Sirius commanded. Kreacher disappeared with a pop. They sat in awkward silence for about a minute before the elf popped back into the room. In his wrinkly old hand was the real locket. The dark magic permeated the air and all the Sheikah let out a collective sigh of relief. They finally had the real locket within their grasp.
A/N: Once again, sorry for the very long wait. Real life was a bitch. I'm hoping to wrap up this story soon. There's not much left in terms of major plot points, but you can expect this story to end in maybe five to ten chapters. Please review and tell me what you thought!
