Tris POV:
"WHAT?"
"I SAID, DO YOU WANT ME TO GET US SOME DRINKS-Oh, hello Peter." I blush furiously as Peter wraps his arm around my waist. I lean against his chest and Christina winks at me before running off to get drinks of her own.
Peter smirks at me. "LET'S GO FIND FOUR," he shouts over the music.
Across from us, Eric watches two younger men play beer pong. His eyes meet mine and he winks prominently towards Peter and myself.
"Come on," I say, tugging Peter's shoulder. I can't stand for any more of this nonsense.
Peter and I end up sitting down on a couch that has a red wine stain on the arm. From another party, I'm guessing. The room's walls are covered in black paint, and neon lights hang from the ceilings. The party host, Zeke, pours beer from a keger to some older members. The music is so loud that when I shout I can't hear myself. Peter yells something in my ear and I give him a weird look before he stands up, points to the drinks and walks away.
I sit on the couch waiting for Four for fifteen minutes. It feels like an hour. I finally decide to get up and use the bathroom. I walk over empty beer bottles and broken CD records, rubbing my eyes from the horribly stenches.
I've been in Zeke's apartment plenty of times. He shares it with Shauna, Uriah, Lynn, and Marlene, and between the five of them, the apartment is nearly as big as the Chasm. But with nearly half of Dauntless in here, it seems so much smaller.
My fist knocks on the door. When no one answers I do it again, then again, but still no answer. So I turn the handle, and open to Four kissing another woman passionately.
I stutter out a syllable. "H-how could you?" I bring myself to say. My purse drops onto the counter and it finally startles Four from ripping the woman's shirt open.
"Tris," he whispers.
"Oh my god," the woman says. "I am so sorry. We were just-"
"Ahem," Four clears his throat. "We were just-"
"And I was just leaving," I say quietly.
"Wait!" Four calls. The woman backs away from Four and buttons up her sparkly blouse. "Tris," Four says. "I'm sorry. I've had a few drinks. I'm not thinking straight."
"Oh my god," the woman repeats. She fixes her flawless curls in the mirror. "What is going on between you two? Tris, aren't you engaged to Peter."
The door falls shut and I rest my head against it. A tear slips down my face and I sniffle. The woman hands me a tissue. "Thank you," I whisper. "Please don't tell anyone." I rearrange the purse on my shoulder and twist the door handle.
Four buttons a few undone buttons on his shirt. "Thank you," he tells the woman. I'm just about to leave when he grabds my hand. "I'm sorry Tris. Please, don't go."
I shake my head. "You've already taken my dignity. I best be on my way."
"I don't want to rush it! Dad, she's not ready. I need more time."
"The ceremony's at the end of the month, Peter. There's not much else we can do. Max and I have made a deal, and we intend to keep it."
The two open their mouths to stare at me as I shut the door behind me. "Excuse me," I say shakily.
"Leaving so soon?" Eric asks. I'm expecting his voice to be sarcastic. But it's not. It's comforting.
"Yeah, sorry. I just, I don't know," I blabber on. I take a deep breath. "It was just, not what I needed tonight."
"You know Tris, I'm sure Peter would be willing to go back in there with you. I don't intend on keeping him any longer," Eric says.
"Oh, no thank you," I say. "I'll just be going back to my own apartment. Long day tomorrow."
Peter smiles at me. "I'll walk you."
Eric nods at his son before walking back into the room. "Trying to get away from the noise?" Peter says, making small talk.
I shake my head.
"C'mon," Peter says. "There's got to be some reason why you left."
"Four," I say with a sigh. "I...I caught him making out with another girl."
Peter's eyes go wide. "Oh, no no no," he says, as I try to turn in the direction of my apartment. "Come on, I'll take you somewhere that will cheer you up."
We end up walking into the Pit, grabbing two chocolate milkshakes, and sitting in a little alcove near the railing that I never knew was there.
"My dad designed it for dates a while back," Peter says. "Come to think of it, he probably designed it for us. He shoots me a smile and I laugh nervously and sip my milkshake. "You want to tell me anything more about tonight?"
"Dinner was nice," I say simply.
"I'm not talking about that Tris, and you know it."
I shrug. "I just needed to use the toilet and when I walked into the bathroom, Four was making out with another girl. They saw me, and now the lady knows our secret." I rub my temple nervously.
Peter gives me a sympathetic smile. "If there's one thing I know about Four, he's very loyal. He would never cheat on you. He must have been intoxicated by something."
"Whatever," I say with a shake of my head. "Maybe it was silly of me to even take a chance at being with Four. Stupid, even. I should have just obeyed my father." I close my eyes and sigh.
Peter shakes his head. "Tris, you are anything but stupid. You're smart, and beautiful, and loyal, and, gosh darn it Tris, I am in love with you."
The next day, I do not meet Four in the Control Room. I've decided on my job; I want to be a Faction Ambassador.
So I spend the day lying in bed and eating the chocolate bars I had stashed away for a special occasion.
Maybe I was stupid to love Four. He is two years older than me. He's more mature, but at the same time more needy. I might as well just marry Peter, make Eric and my father happy, and live the life I am destined to live.
I pull out the romance book that Caleb had snuck me on Visiting Day and read it for what feels like the hundredth time. A love triangle is going on between three of the characters, and it only aggravates me more. I slip the book under my pillow as someone knocks at the door.
"Just a minute!" I call, as I hide the chocolate in my sock drawer, make the bed, and change out of my pajamas.
"Hello," I greet, as I open the door. Then I look up to see Four. "Goodbye." I begin to shut the door, but he catches it with a hand.
"Tris, hear me out."
I shake my head.
"Tris, please."
"No," I say. "Please, just leave me alone. You've done enough damage."
"And I intend to fix it," Four says. He walks into my apartment and looks around the room. "I had a few drinks. My mind was not in the right place."
"We were supposed to spend the night together!" I say, louder than usual. "I was going to spend the night at your place. Today," I take a deep breath. "Today you were going to show me around the Control Room and we were going to have lunch together."
"Do you believe me?" Four asks, "Because if you don't, I do not know what I'm still doing here."
"That's the thing," I say with a whisper. "I do believe you. I'm just not sure I still love you. Now please, get out of my apartment."
