It was nothing big, nothing grandiose, they went through the motions as if she were a hunter herself and in the end… she'd been part of the team, Team Free Will. They collected her body, built a pyre, salted and wrapped her in bandages, then burnt her upon that pyre, a funeral fit for royalty.

They stuck a cross in the ground with her name on it, in a small woodland clearing not too far from the Men of Letters HQ and they spread her ashes amongst the growing grass of spring.

Not too far away, a pair of blue eyes watched the brothers from the shadows. Now aware of the fate of the demon that had earned redemption in his eyes, the demon he'd grown to care about. Sam had noticed him there, but hadn't said a word, Dean didn't notice, which was probably for the better, as Dean would have tried to talk to him, talk him out of running away… he knew he'd have come back if he allowed Dean to talk.
Castiel listened to the boys, he hadn't thought that they'd say anything for the fallen demon, comrade… uneasy friend, but they did.

"Meg… you were a pain in the ass from day one" Sam started "a lying pain in the ass that almost got us killed a few times, and you got friends of ours killed too, good friends"

"But in the end… you were one of us, an you earned it, rest in peace whore." Dean finished, tipping a bottle of Meg's favourite whisky onto the ash covered ground. "You were good in the end."

Castiel watched, as they left the area, Sam throwing an acknowledging nod in Castiel's direction when Dean wasn't watching, Castiel returning the nod without a word, thankful of his silence.

When they were gone, Castiel approached the makeshift grave, running his fingers across the tip of the cross, a hardly fitting symbol for a demon but somehow fitting for Meg in particular, she died atoning for sin, her own sure, but sin none the less, he only wished it could have earned her a place in Heaven.

"Goodbye Meg… I'm sorry" he whispered "I'm sorry it ended this way" with that, he knelt down and pressed his palm to the damp grass, his hand shimmering for a brief moment before he vanished, not to return.

In weeks to come the boys would drive past the area and week after week, a new tree would have sprouted, a new bush filled with flowers, perfectly grown green grass filled the area and they just knew…

For the first time in history, the deathbed of a Demon, had been blessed by an Angel.
