I sit there on my little cloud weeping, as I watch thousands off bombs get dropped off over the Capitol. Why are people so cruel? I mean, back in District 11 our Peacekeepers were harsh, but they kept us safe, but to bomb thousands of innocent Children because of a battle for freedom? They should've just kept The Hunger Games – there was only 23 deaths each year after all. I wipe away my tears and stand up – well, float up anyway – and I bump into my Brother, Thresh.
"Happy birthday little Mockingjay." He says sadly, holding out a beautiful star-shaped cupcake with a single sparkler poking through the icing.
"Thanks Thresh." I say, nearly crying at his nickname for me. Little Mockingjay. Only because I can jump from tree to tree so gracefully that I could be flying. Well used to anyway.
"Rue... I know your sad about this but, just think about it okay? After this The Hunger Games will be over, everyone will be free from his evilness." He says, spitting out that last part like poison.
I turn around and look through the clouds to watch the carnage unfold, and my breath catches in my throat as I watch a familiar dark braid run through the crowd as the bombs go off, sending fire flying through the air. It's Katniss. My Katniss. I find myself screaming as she's engulfed in flames, Katniss Everdeen, The Girl on Fire. Only now it's a sick joke, as I watch her skin turn black and start to flake off her skin.
"Katniss!"
Thresh holds me back for some reason, even though there's no way I can save her.
"Rue! I'm so sorry!"
Tears pour down my face as I watch her burn, and for the first time I noticed she's running towards the fire, not away from it, like any normal person would. But then again, Katniss isn't normal, she was the one who allied up with me and protected me in our Games, and stayed with me until I died in her lap. I watch her lips forming one single word and I try to figure out what she's saying.
Prim?
Suddenly I find myself watching Katniss's memories – or what I think are her memories anyway. I watch her watching her sister slowly starve to death, tucking in her sisters shirt into her skirt before the reaping, volunteering to take her place in the 74th Games, watching her grow up, and finally I see what's just happened through Katniss's eyes. I watch Primrose turn into a human fireball and burn to death, but it's all in slow motion, and suddenly I find myself back in the present, collapsed in Thresh's arms.
"Rue? Are you okay?"
"Yeah." I say weakly, and suddenly I hear a thump behind me.
I see a slight, pale girl – about my height – with her blonde hair in two plaits that hang over her shoulders, wearing a simple white shirt and black knee-length skirt behind, and I know instantly who it is, even though I haven't ever seen her before this. Primrose Everdeen. And I don't know why I say it but I say:
"Tuck your tail in Little Duck."
