My Life Would Suck Without You

Chapter 16

Caleb looked over at Janessa and took in how beautiful she looked under the moonlight. In his eyes, this was a whole new experience for him. His mind just couldn't wrap around the idea that she had grown up into a beautiful young woman. If that was even possible. Her personality was more lively than it was before. She had always been such a shy girl since she was a baby. The change in her personality really enticed him. Janessa took her shoes off before dipping her feet in the water. Everything about right now was just so peaceful and quiet. "What's been going on with you?" Caleb asked as Janessa looked at him before turning away.

Janessa looked at the surroundings before her. The wind blowing softly as she could hear the trees swishing. Did she really want to tell Caleb what was going on or did she want to hold back? Caleb deserved to know what was going on with her. He was one of her closest friends. Although she saw him as something more than a brother, he was still someone who meant a lot to her. He had every right to know especially if the rest of the guys knew what was going on. Looking back at him, she whispered, "My biological parents passed away last month."

Caleb shifted his gaze to her in shock before he questioned, "Janessa, I'm so sorry to hear that. Why didn't you tell me this sooner? Why didn't the guys tell me?"

"I asked them not to tell you." She replied as he gave her a questioning look, "I just didn't want to burden you with any of my problems. You had just been thinking of dating someone and were beginning to spend less and less time with us. So I thought that I'd rather not be the person to upset you or pull you away from spending time with Sarah."

"Janessa, I can't believe you didn't think to just tell me. Regardless of me dating someone doesn't mean that I'm going to just push you guys aside. You know that you're important to me. Just because Sarah is part of my life doesn't mean that I can't be there for you. I still want to know what is going on with you guys. You guys are my family. I want to always be there for you guys." He argued as she looked away from him.

"I don't know. I guess a part of me just didn't want to tell you because I was upset that you had pushed us aside to be with Sarah. Even though I knew that you had every right to live your own life because eventually you would move on and spend less time with us. I couldn't ask more of you especially with you ascending and everyone relying on you for everything. You've got a lot on your plate and I didn't want to add any more pressure to your life." She said kicking the water.

She looked down to see the moon reflecting on the ground and felt something warm reach for her hand. Staring at the hand that was now joined to hers, her eyes trailed up to meet Caleb's eyes to see him looking at her. "Nessie, I don't ever want you to feel like you can't come to me when something happens to you. I care about you a lot." He said.

Janessa let his words sink in a little before she made any comment, "I'm really sorry, Caleb for not telling you."

"It's okay. Just promise me no more secrets between the two of us." Caleb said as she nodded her head, "Good."

Caleb threw his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. Kissing her head, his thoughts tried to grasp all the things that she had to endure while he was busy hanging out with Sarah. The amount of stress and depression she must have gone through. The feeling of not only having to lose her parents but having her best friend leave all at the same time was just something he thought was unbearable. He heard her softly whisper, "I promise."

The following morning...

Janessa woke up early in the morning to get ready for school. Grabbing her backpack, she made her way downstairs to the kitchen to grab some fruits to eat. Walking into the kitchen, she went to see if Tyler's car was still at home. She let out a sigh when she noticed that he wasn't at home. "Looking for your brother, sweetie?" She heard her mom ask.

"Yeah. Did he head off to school already?" Janessa asked.

"He did but your ride is here." Rosalind said as Janessa looked at her.

"My ride?" She asked as Rosalind nodded her head and smiled at her.

"Mhmm. They're waiting for you outside." Rosalind said as Janessa grabbed a banana and her backpack before walking to the front door, "Have a good day at school, sweetie!"

Janessa walked over to the front door and opened the door to find Caleb there leaning against his car. "Caleb, what are you doing here?" She asked shutting the front door and walking down the front steps.

"Thought you might need a ride to school." He said as he opened the door for her.

"You sure you didn't send my brother off to school early just so you could do this?" She asked raising an eyebrow at him as he chuckled.

"Can't say I didn't do that." Caleb said as she laughed before getting in the car.

Caleb shut the door and walked over to the driver side. Getting inside, he put his seatbelt on and started the car. Janessa looked at him smiling and shaking her head. She couldn't believe that he would do such a thing. He looked at her asking, "What?"

"I can't believe you sent Tyler to school early." She said as he laughed.

"Well he was hesitant to let me pick you up at first." He shrugged as she giggled.

"You, Caleb Danvers, are something else." She said as she buckled her seatbelt.

"You shouldn't be surprised about that." He said as he started the car and drove off.

She shook her head at him smiling. It had been so long since she last had a good laugh or smiled at anything. She was so glad that the past few weeks started to slowly get back to normal and that she could live her life again. She owed it to her family for being her strength and letting her heal at her own pace. But she most especially appreciated Tyler reaching out to Pogue for help. If he had never asked Pogue to talk to her who knows what state she would be in. And she was so thankful to finally have Caleb know what was going on. Tip toeing around and avoiding him was hard enough but after yesterday she felt herself relax so much more. "Caleb." She said as he looked at her for a second, "Thank you for last night."

He flashed a smile her before saying, "No problem. Thanks for hanging out with me."

"Of course. It was nice finally being able to tell you everything that was going on and spending time with you." She said as she looked out the window.

She watched as they entered the parking lot of their school and Caleb parked the car. She saw her brother with Pogue and Reid waiting for them. Caleb turned the car off before they both gathered their stuff and got out of the car. Janessa shut gently shut the car door before walking with Caleb towards the group. "Morning guys!" She said as she hugged each of them and stopped at her brother, "Thanks for leaving me at home, Ty."

"Hey! I was waiting for you and then Caleb offered to pick you up." He said defensively as the group laughed.

"I'm kidding!" She said as she wrapped her arm around his waist.

Tyler pulled her closer to him. There would be no better feeling in this world for him than to see his sister smiling and laughing. He was starting to see her finally returning to her normal self and he loved it. "You ready to head to class?" He asked as he noticed her looking at someone sitting on the steps of the front of the school, "Everything okay?"

"I'll meet you guys inside." She said as they looked at her.

"Baby girl, is something wrong?" Caleb asked as she looked at him.

"No it's just I think that girl is new here. I was gonna introduce myself in case she didn't know anyone." She replied before she looked back at her brother, "Same me a seat or two?"

"Yeah we'll see you inside." Tyler said as she stepped away from the boys.

She made her way to the girl sitting by the steps and said, "Hi!"

The black haired girl looked up at her before responding, "Hi."

"Are you new here?" Janessa asked as the girl nodded, "Oh well welcome to Spencer. I'm Janessa Simms."

"Bea Ayala." Bea said as she shook Janessa's hand that Janessa had offered.

"What class do you have first?" Janessa asked as she noticed the guys passing by them to head to class.

"English." Bea responded as Janessa smiled.

"Oh I have English too. You wanna walk to class together?" She asked.

"Sure that would be nice." Bea said as she got up from her seat.

"If you don't mind me asking, did you just move here?" Janessa asked as they started to walk to class.

"Yeah my family is new here. We moved from California." Bea said as Janessa's eyes widened.

"I was from California originally but my birth parents didn't want me and that's how I ended up here with my adopted parents and brother." She said as Bea looked at her, "I'm sorry. I have a tendency to share too much."

Bea laughed before saying, "It's okay. It's actually a little reassuring that someone can understand what I'm going through."

"Oh for sure! If you ever need anything, you can reach out to me." Janessa said as they stepped in to class. Bea took a look at the class. She was unsure of where to sit or who to even sit next to. Janessa looked around to find her brother and found him sitting with Reid and two empty seats next to him. Pogue and Caleb were in the seats in front of them. She turned to look at Bea and said, "Did you wanna sit with my friends and me?"

"Sure if you guys don't mind." Bea said.

"We don't mind at all. Come on and I'll introduce you to them before we start class." Janessa said as the two girls made their way to the guys.

Janessa sat next to Tyler as Bea sat next to her. "Guys this is Bea, she's new here. Bea, this is Tyler Simms and Reid Garwin. And down in front of us is Pogue Parry and Caleb Danvers" She said as she pointed to her brother, Reid, Pogue and Caleb.

"Hi. It's nice to meet you guys." Bea said.

"Likewise. Welcome to Ipswich." Tyler said as Reid nodded.

"Nice to meet you." Pogue said extending his hand out to Bea.

Bea felt her cheeks flush a little before taking his hand saying, "It's nice to meet you too."
