At Teikō Junior High winning was everything, perfection was expected among all students in one form or another. But what outsiders recognized most was their famous basketball team, known for having over 100 members. The most well known starters all of Japan were on the team and quickly became known as the Generation of Miracles. One starter, however was always forgotten due to his low presence. Kuroko Tetsuya was acknowledged by the other prodigies despite being overlooked by the general public.
In her last year of junior high one girl, who admired the team throughout their basketball career from afar, noticed how the team seemed to be slowly drifting apart. She noticed the team began playing selfishly, only relying on their personal skill instead of working as a team. The girl was glad when the school year ended, she couldn't be happier to be surrounded by new people and in a new environment. Believing none of the members of the Generation of Miracles would go to a new school which had no reputation, this girl decided to go to Seirin High School.
This is the story of Yukimura Airi and her interaction with the Seirin basketball team and the members of the Generation of Miracles, as well as her growing infatuation with the sport.
Today was the first day of high school for Yukimura Airi, she would be attending Seirin in hopes of finding a was to be involved with the basketball team, and the fact that she wouldn't have to take a train or bus to the school was a plus as well. While attending Teikō Junior High she never got the chance to be involved with the sport, but this year she was determined to change that.
"Ne, Airi-chan, it's time to wake up! You have school~" A woman with short red hair and wide cyan colored eyes stepped into her sixteen year old daughter's room. She wasn't shocked to see how messy and disorganized the bedroom was, her daughter wasn't the neatest child.
A groan slipped through the girls lips as she slowly sits up, her wild untamed locks slipping off her shoulders. "School starts too early…" The teen mumbles as she stands up to strech, waking up her entire body from slumber though her expression still made it seem like she was half asleep.
"That maybe so but you hardly do anything to want to spend more time in bed. You didn't even see any of your friends over the break!" The middle-aged woman let a delicate pout form on her lips as she watches her daughter head towards the bathroom. She never imagined that she would have a child so anti-social and lazy, but then again you can't choose which parent the kid will take after.
"I already told you, I had no friends in junior high." The younger of the two retorted before closing the bathroom door, effectively ending the conversation as her mother squawked loudly in response. That was a lie, she did have one friend but she'd rather spend her time in the house playing video games than 'hanging out'.
Airi took a quick shower before letting out a soft sigh as she takes in her reflection, anyone who knew her mother could tell the two were related right off the bat. Her hair was the same shade of red, but appeared messy and was rather long, her eyes were the same cyan color and shape, though from years of the minimal amount of sleep she had noticeable bags under her eyes.
After waking herself up fully, the teen got dressed and headed downstairs. Her mother, who seemed to be the only one in the house besides her, was cleaning the kitchen after having made a large breakfast she knew her daughter wouldn't bother to eat. But hey, it's the thought that counts. Airi looked around the kitchen noting silently that her father was nowhere in sight, her mother must have kicked him out of the house so he could get to work on time.
"Ah, Airi-chan, you better get going or you'll be late! You don't even have time to eat the breakfast I made~!" The middle-aged woman exclaimed when she noticed her daughter had finally come to the kitchen, only to waste time looking around.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm heading out." Airi waved her mother off before moving to slip on her shoes and leave the house.
"Ne, you act so much like your father!" She heard her mother shout before she closed the door fully, making her roll her eyes.
Walking down the street the red head's face was pulled into an impassive expression, which just so happened to be her default expression. She took note of several teens who wore her school's uniform running the campus and a soft scoff passed her lips, why bother running when they knew they would be late anyway. She never understood people's logic. She made it a point to walk even slower and by the time she reached the school gates the only people around were people who were recruiting club members, and they were taking down their signs and stalls. A spark of interest passed over the girls eyes for a split second as she stands before a stall that read 'Basketball'.
"Ne, is the manager spot available?" She asked, getting straight to the point, causing the two students who had their backs towards her to flinch in surprise.
After getting over the initial shock, both students turned around to eye the new comer warily. Airi took in their appearance with a brow raise skywards. One of the students was a short girl with short brown hair and brown eyes. The other was a boy with spiky black hair wearing glasses.
A happy smile forms on the face of on the girls face, while her companion shifts uncomfortably in his seat, not used to a person staring at him so intensely. "Hai, it is!" She spoke loudly, causing Airi to cringe and take a step back in surprise.
"Do you want it?" The boy asked, a hand moving to adjust his glasses momentarily. He hoped the redhead was nothing like the girl sitting next to him or else the team would suffer the wrath of two sadistic women.
"Yeah." The red-head drawled out out as she pushes a hand through her messy locks, wincing slightly as her fingers caught in one of the many tangles. The nonchalance and her awkward moment were noticed by the boy, who nearly let out a sigh of relief as her actions seemed to soothe his fears. Airi, on the other hand watched as the brunette girls smile widened noticeably, earning her a quirked eyebrow.
"Then it's yours! Meet us in the gym after school! Oh, I'm Aida Riko, second year and coach of the team! This is Hyūga Junpei, second year and captain of the team." The girl, Aida, stated as she obviously looks the younger girl over. She seemed lazy and unmotivated, but she could have other redeeming qualities.
"Yukimura Airi, first year. Nice to meet you Aida-senpai, Hyūga-senpai." The girl bowed slightly out of respect for her elders before heading for her class, as lethargic as ever. Both upperclassmen watched as the girl shuffled away, a deadpanned look on their face.
"I didn't think you would give that position away so easily, I almost thought we'd never get a manager. What's this about?" Knowing Aida could have a hidden agenda behind letting the strange freshman take the role without any problems made Hyūga nervous.
"Don't worry about it~" Aida replied a little too cheerfully, she definitely had something up her sleeve.
By the time Airi got to her class the school day was already thirty minutes in. As she entered her classroom the students who chattered loudly among themselves quieted down when the teacher turns to glare at the red-haired girl. "You're late!" He shouted, his face red from frustration and anger. How dare a freshman walk into class so nonchalantly thirty minutes late.
"I noticed." Was Airi's simple response as she eyed the teacher, obviously not affected by his glare or his yell.
"Che, introduce yourself to the class." His face turning a brighter shade of red at this students absolute disregard of his authority.
"Hai, Sensei." The girl wrote her name on the blackboard slowly while letting out several signs as well as yawns, earning herself odd looks from her peers. She turned towards her classmates after finishing, letting her eyes travel over each and everyone of them before pausing at a familiar pair of sky blue ones.
"My name is Yukimura Airi. Nice to meet you." Was all she said before making her way over to the last seat open, which just so happened to be behind the boy she recognized. She didn't fail to notice the gossiping that started immediately after she sat down, she was just more focused on the male in front of her who was slowly turning to meet her gaze.
"Ohayo Yukimura-san. I see you still haven't gotten over your bad habit of being late." He spoke in his usual monotone as he stared at her blanky, strange that it was his default expression.
"Ohayo Kuroko-kun. Maybe if school didn't start so early I wouldn't be so late.. Actually, even if it started later I would still come in late, never mind." She replied before letting out an obnoxious yawn and letting her head fall against her folded arms, falling asleep immediately.
By the end of the school day everyone seemed to be talking about the lazy girl who showed up to class thirty minutes late only to fall asleep. This didn't seem to bother Airi as she walked through the halls hearing several people comment on how unladylike she was. Just to add salt to the wound she shoved her pinky in her ear with an impassive expression, eyes twinkling at the appalled sounds they made. She cracked a small smile at their disgusted expressions, all of their reactions were just too funny.
Airi soon met up with Aida and Hyūga at the gym, looking around she noticed all the recruits and current members of the team were already there.
"Yukimura-chan, you're late!" Aida shouted reprimandingly, hitting the younger girl with a paper fan as soon as she caught sight of her.
"You never specified what time I had to be here, Aida-senpai. All you said was to meet you in the gym after school, so technically I'm on time." Was the redheads response as she made no move to avoid the assault from her upperclassman. I wouldn't do her much good anyway, Aida seemed like the type of person who didn't mind a chase.
"That's not an excuse-"
Airi stopped listening to the brunette in favor of listening to the conversation between several first years, though the constant hitting and nagging her senpai was doing made it hard.
"Isn't our manager cute?" One said, not caring that his voice seemed too loud for a private conversations.
"She's a second year, right?" Another answered, his voice just as loud as the first. "But that's true! If she was just a bit more sexy.."
"Who's that other girl? She's pretty cute too.." The third in the group added on, elbowing the other two lightly.
"Really? Isn't she that girl that came late today? Wish I had the guts to do that.."
Airi watched on in mild interest as Hyūga punched all three boys atop their head, one after another. "You're wrong!"
Aida decided then that she would take a break from abusing her underclassman to introduce herself to the other freshman, much to the other girls pleasure. "My name is Aida Riko, I'm the coach for Seirin's basketball team!" She shouted loudly, placing her knuckles against her hips.
Behind her, Airi mimicked her stance causing her other senpai's to snicker silently next to her.
"Wha- He's not the coach?!" The three freshman pointed to an old man, who looked ready to topple over at any second, standing near the entrance of the gym.
"Ah, that's Takeda-sensei. He's the advisor for the team." The brunette explained, turning her gaze towards the older man, who raised one of his shaking hands to wave at everyone.
"What a raisin.." The red head muttered, earning herself an elbow to the stomach.
"But then, why is she here?" Someone asked, pointing over to the girl who was bent over in pain.
"Oh, this is our manager. Yukimura Airi-chan." Hyūga answered, giving the girl a pitying glance before helping her to her feet.
"Right, well since that's out of the way… Take off your shirts!" The coach shouted gleefully, getting astonished looks from nearly all the junior members.
After several minutes of nothing but complaints, the freshmen recruits lined up in only their shirts and sneakers. Aida eyed each one of them as she slowly walked the line, making sure they knew their weaknesses and how they could correct them.
When she got to the end of the line she stared at a guy who was several feet taller than her, he had dark red hair and eyes, and an aura of danger seemed to ooze off of him. 'This guys numbers are off the charts! This is natural talent!'
"Aida-senpai, you're drooling." Airi called out teasingly, causing the other girl to hurl her clipboard towards her head. "Why are you so violent? Is this how you treat all your potential friends?"
"Shut up!" The brunette shouted in response, her face a bright shade of pink to make her embarrassment known. "Anyway, I think that's everyone.. Wait, where is Kuroko Tetsuya-kun?"
"I'm right here." Said a teen with light blue hair, who suddenly appeared causing nearly everyone to jump in surprise.
"Eh?! When did you get here?!" The coached asked, placing a hand her rapidly beating heart. This guy had no virtually presence and the fact that no one heard him until just a moment ago was odd.
"I've been here since the beginning." The bluette responded nonchalantly as he had gotten used to going throughout his day without being noticed.
"You're from..Teikō?" Hyūga asked, looking over Aida's shoulder at Kuroko's club application.
"Yes."
The captain placed a hand on the younger boys shoulder with a wry smile. "You weren't a regular player though, right Kuroko?"
"I've played in quite a few games actually."
At this, almost everyone shouted in disbelief. This ghost-like, shrimp played in actual matches along side the Generation of Miracles.
"Alright, take off your shirt Kuroko-kun!"
That night Airi got little to no sleep, she spent the majority of the night playing video games in the solace of her room. By the time she felt too tired to stay conscious any longer it was already 4 in the morning. After turning off her game system the girl crawled under her covers, falling asleep as soon as she got comfortable.
"Airi-chan, your mother says it's time to get up." The girls father entered her room four hours later, a yawn passing his lips as he pressed his side against the door frame.
Her father was a tall, lean man with shoulder length black hair and bright green eyes. He sported the same heavy bags under his eyes as his daughter, who groaned out a soft no at his statement.
"No fair, if I have to get up so do you." The man grunted as he moved across the girls room towards her bed. He swiftly pulled the covers off the redhead, causing her to fall off the mattress as she was tangled in the blankets.
"Ah, Tou-san.. I don't want to got to school today." Airi whined as she wrapped her arms around one of her fathers legs, almost falling asleep until he shook her off.
The girl's father ran his fingers across his forehead, moaning softly about his wife having to deal with him like this every morning. He strides to the girls closet to grab her uniform, laying the already wrinkled clothing on her bed.
"You can't miss the second day of school. It is important that you get a good education, no matter how boring or trivial it might seem… At least, that's the speech your mother gave me in high school. Now get ready, you don't want to be late." He gave the teen a hard stare before a soft yawn passed through both the father and daughters lips. With that he left the room to start getting ready for his day as well.
On her way to school the cyan-eyed girl saw a familiar classmate walking a couple feet ahead of her. She let out another soft yawn while rubbing the sleep out of her eyes before deciding to greet him.
"Ohayo, Yukimura-san." His monotone voice spoke from her right, causing her to glance at him. It was a good thing he beat her to the punch as it would take her a while to work up the effort to catch up to him.
"Ohayo, Kuroko-kun. Do me a favor, will ya? Let me lean on you until we get to school." The redhead responded, ignoring the odd looks she got from the other students who just so happened to walk this route to the school.
"Do you remember what happened last time I let you lean on me? You nearly got strangled." The phantom player answered, his mouth twitching upwards in just the slightest at the memory.
"It's not my fault…" She started to retort, whining childishly before turning her head to look at him thoughtfully. "I have this rare condition-"
"I didn't know laziness was a condition." Both Airi and Kuroko looked to their left to see a tall boy and their classmate, Kagami Taiga, walking along side Airi. They shared a look, wondering how they didn't notice someone so large walking with them.
"Kagami-kun, you're a lot taller than Kuroko-kun.. I'll lean on you instead." Without waiting for permission the girl shuffled to the side, resting against the tall teenagers side.
Kagami, not wanting to just push a girl away from him, sputtered loudly and tensed visibly. "The hell?!" He finally managed to get out, turning his head to glare at the girl. "It's a good thing you're a girl, you know that?"
"Thanks a lot. I'll remember this moment forever." The girl responded teasingly, nearly stumbling as she tried to keep up with his long strides.
'Geez, if you can't keep up lean on someone else!' The tallest teen thought, his eyebrow twitched in annoyance as he struggled to make his strides smaller.
"What a cute couple." Kuroko stated as he walked ahead of the two redheads, nose deep into a book he suddenly pulled out.
"No one's a couple, weakling!" Kagami shouted, earning the attention of several people who just so happened to be passing the gate of the school at that time.
"You boys are always so full of energy."
"You're just lazy!"
"How ill-mannered are you, Kagami-kun?"
"Like you're one to talk!"
The students of Seirin watched, with surprised expressions, as the two teens walked into the school bickering. This school year would prove to be interesting indeed.
