Date with a Demon Huntress

The footsteps were getting closer: measured, regular, the clack of leather heels on rain-slicked cobbles. Simon wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans and pushed his glasses higher up his nose in a nervous gesture. He wished Isabelle would hurry up. She might be used to doing all of this dangerous fantasy stuff in the dead of night, but he wasn't.

She rounded the corner with a smile on her face, wiping sticky black demon blood off her switchblade.

"Having fun already?" She nudged his elbow as she passed him.

Simon swallowed. Fun? They'd killed four demons so far, one of which was a Greater Demon, and he had a feeling the worst was yet to come. Yet Isabelle walked ahead confidently, chin held high, black hair brushing her back in a tight ponytail.

"Um, I don't think you've mentioned what the exact purpose of this nightly adventure is." Simon huffed as he caught up with her.

"I don't want you involved." She was staring straight ahead, focused on whatever creatures might be hiding in the shadows.

"Judging by the fact that I helped you break into an abandoned warehouse earlier tonight, it's safe to say that I'm already pretty involved." He skidded closer to Isabelle when he saw something twitch behind a dumpster.

"Don't forget the ugly worm you killed at the gates. I told you it was just like playing on your Xbox." She grinned.

"It wasn't." Simon shuddered. He wouldn't forget that hideous creature anytime soon. His eyes darted around and he felt as if something was watching him. "Isabelle, I think we're being followed."

"I know." Her eyes gleamed mischievously.

He reached for her hand but she shook him off. "Quiet." Isabelle hissed. She tensed up and reached for the blade behind her belt. She pushed Simon against the wall and stood in front of him protectively. Her electrum whip uncoiled from where it was wrapped around her wrist and Isabelle crouched, poised for the attack.

As her exhilarated laugh echoed in the alley, Simon groaned. "Please, not another one."

This wasn't what he'd been expecting when he'd finally managed to score a date with Isabelle Lightwood. She'd seemed to have walked right out of his favourite superhero comics, Black boots with silver belts, a tight leather jacket and black swirling tattoos covering her pale wrists. He'd been mesmerized, and quick enough to ask her out.

"Would it be our secret?" She'd asked him mysteriously, her eyes lingering on the comic he was reading.
"Of course." He'd stammered.
"I choose what we're doing?"
He nodded in agreement.
"Great!" She grinned. "Pick me up at ten."

Now she was fighting a foul-smelling creature that looked like a huge, black hyena. Its yellowish teeth snapped at her as slashed her knife across a hairy front leg. Simon stood still to keep the beast from noticing him and waited – for the fifth time – for Isabelle to slay the thing. The razor-sharp electrum whip circled around the demon's throat and slid it easily. The creature fell, a low thud on the wet stones, and crumpled in on itself.

Isabelle took a deep breath and turned to Simon, not a stain on her clothes or a hair out of place. She linked her arm through his and led him further down the small street. "This is the most fun I've ever had on a date," she said cheerfully.

"Good for you, but next time we're going bowling." Simon muttered.
