Hey guys! I was having this idea in my head and my friend persuaded me to write a story about it. So here I am, posting my very first FanFic. I hope you like it. Any constructive criticism and feedback are welcome!

Takes place right after chapter 340: Gift (The end of the Grand Magic Games Arc).

Yesterday's History - Chapter 1, And so it begins...

It was early in the afternoon when honey-colored eyes watched out over a busy street beneath a not so busy apartment building. The scene below seemed to be distorted by a thin layer of frost that stuck to the window, making it even more inviting to the blonde resident that had busied her eyes these past few minutes following each and every one that had passed by. She loved this street and everything about it just screamed at her to enjoy the winter's snowy days with the rest of Magnolia. She felt the feeling stir in her bones, but it soon faded away when her eyes wandered toward the little orange armchair that stood to her right.

Lucy Heartfilia, current owner of the lovely apartment that was just mentioned, was finding herself in quite a delicate situation. She was bored. Not the type of bored where you just don't know what to do, but the kind which is in actuality even worse. She was in fact troubled because she wanted to do so many things at that moment, but just couldn't since there was one rather big problem that was keeping her from acting to her heart's content.

That problem went by the name of Natsu Dragneel, also known as her charming partner in crime, and he was the reason why she was so frustrated right now. She felt like she was some kind of pet simply due to the clear instructions of Natsu that basically forbade her to do anything other than sleep and breathe. It felt like she was a prisoner in her own house. Naturally, Natsu himself, as dense as he was, had not fully comprehended the reason as to why he had been acting so overprotective all of a sudden.

This whole ordeal began when, on their last mission, events took a turn for the worse. Lucy had been in dire need for Jewels since she not only had to pay off her rent for her apartment, but she also had to pay for the damage a certain hothead had made when he had nearly caused her building to collapse. After this event Natsu tried to make up for it by dragging her on a simple, well-paid mission. He had even promised her his share of the reward. The mission itself seemed to be easy and fun enough at the beginning, but ended with a big bang. Literally, for Natsu had blown up the bridge on which they had been standing, resulting in their plummet towards the ice-cold river below.

Under normal circumstances this would not have been so bad, but as it so happened to be Lucy was the only one of their team that had to suffer the consequences. Happy was safely airborne and Natsu, of course, with his inhumanly hot body, was also completely fine, at which Lucy had almost cursed if she wasn't slightly attracted to his well-toned figure. The almost frozen river had given Lucy a very bad cold and in another attempt to make up for this Natsu promised to take care of her, which she initially thought of as a very sweet gesture.

It had been three days since her encounter with the freezing river and she honestly felt moderately good. She didn't want to admit it, but Natsu was the main reason for her fast recovery. Even though he was very strict and acting too much like a worried mother – which at times both amused and annoyed her – he did his utmost best to help her in any way he could.

The only problem Lucy had now was the fact that he didn't stop worrying about her. He had even whacked her so hard on the head that it had instantly knocked her out cold for an entire day, just so she wouldn't be able to sneak out and get herself even sicker. It was his way of showing her how much he cared, though Lucy often wished he'd show it with chocolates or with other less painful gestures.

Having been forced to stay locked up in there hadn't been all that bad, though. Natsu provided enough entertainment every time he attempted to cook anything remotely decent that didn't include fish since that was the only thing he and his 'roommate' Happy ever ate. Of course, Happy never complained about having to eat his favorite food every day, but Lucy on the other hand was not a big fan of half-cooked fish. While busying himself in the kitchen Lucy could often hear Natsu knock something over, followed by a curse and the words "Nothing happened!", which always made her dread the moment he would present her the food.

Honestly, thinking about how protective he had been these past couple of days, Lucy felt rather confused about it. It made her heart flutter in ways she didn't understand yet, but her head always brought her back to reality. The entire idea was just stupid in and of its own. Natsu Dragneel, Fire Dragon Slayer of Fiore's number one guild, probably capable of defeating their guild's strongest female mage in a fit of rage, would never, ever let love occupy his thoughts. Lucy knew Natsu well enough to know how his simple mind worked and for some reason she found it quite disappointing that he never really looked at her in a different way.

Lucy remembered the painful words that had spilled from his lips when she said she'd better choose the next mission. That painful, stabbing jolt crept back inside her heart when she thought about how he told her that it would only trouble him if they were to go on another mission if she was in that state. She never meant to be a bother to him and at that moment she even yelled at him to go on his own then, but he just smiled at her and refused to leave her side. She didn't understand how a simple guy like him could act so complicated at times.

Lucy shifted under the covers, her feet swinging over the edge of her bed before glancing at the source of those light snores that had sung her to sleep these past few nights. A smile crept on her face as she noticed how he had positioned his body on the small armchair. His arms and legs were dangling over the armrests and the position could not possible be comfortable, even for him, but three days ago when she had asked him if he wanted to share the bed with her – which had been a onetime offer only – he had refused, saying that he'd only keep her up all night. At that time, she hadn't paid much attention to his choice of words, but now the implications were crystal-clear.

Her cheeks flared as she bit her lip, but the thought soon faded as her mind tried to calm her beating heart with reason. Natsu, in her eyes, was way too innocent to have meant it like that. He didn't even know what it truly meant to share a bed with a girl, even though he ended up in hers most of the time. In his simple mind, he and Lucy would never be Natsu and Lucy because they were friends, Nakama as he liked to call it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Lucy's mind continued to wander off as she stared at the back of her orange armchair. It bothered her that he couldn't just use the word 'friend' like normal people did, even though she knew well enough why that was. Her best friend was a simply guy and he just couldn't care less about love and all its complicated things, but he did care about his friends. To Natsu, his friends were even more important than his own life. That was why they deserved the more important term of 'Nakama'.

Somehow Lucy smiled at the thought of that, but only for a moment. Her thoughts were interrupted by a chill running up her legs as a result of being exposed to the chill air in her room for too long. She looked back in Natsu's direction before taking in a deep breath. His light snores continued to fill the silence in her room as the afternoon sun started her ever so slowly descent, ready to be replaced by the moon in less than eight hours. Lucy looked at the clock, the time convincing her that it was the perfect moment to attempt another escape. She didn't want to wake him because he would roll her up in her covers again like a caterpillar as to keep her from escaping.

Lucy gulped, the idea was to go for a clean escape. Last time she made the horrible mistake of telling him she intended to leave, resulting in him knocking her out. She rubbed her hand over the bump on her head as she thought about it before taking another deep breath to calm her senses.

She listened for his breathing and when she was absolutely certain the Dragon Slayer was still sleeping, she placed her feet on the ground, making another chill run up her spine. Not even three seconds after her pedicured toes had touched the parquet his voice called out to her. "Where are you going, Luce?"

She froze, giving herself a mental slap in her face for forgetting how sensitive his inhuman hearing was. She also somehow couldn't help but notice that Natsu's voice was slightly deeper than normal. This thought occupied her mind for a few seconds before snapping back to reality. She really needed to get out of there and if running away was the only way, so be it.

She remained as silent as she could, hoping he would just think he imagined it all. She still had a slim chance because he hadn't actually seen her yet. At that point, Lucy's mind went into overdrive, planning an escape for every possible situation she might get herself into if she'd get caught.

If quick enough she could jump out the window behind her. Natsu did it all the time even when Happy wasn't there to catch him and safely fly him down. However, even if she dared to jump down, unlike Natsu, Lucy could seriously hurt herself since she wasn't blessed with his abnormal high pain threshold.

Another thought popped into her head, which had been even more insane than her previous one. Because even if she were to try to jump Natsu and knock him unconscious before he got the chance to take her out, she'd have to be stronger than him, which at that moment was not the case. She also had to make sure he wouldn't get too excited to fight because her apartment would most likely be incinerated in the process.

"Lucy?" His voice broke through her thoughts once again. When she looked up and his eyes finally met hers, she suddenly lost the ability to think or even form coherent words in her mouth. His dark eyes stared into hers, waiting for a reply that would never come. It was at that moment that she noticed something about him for the first time since she had known him. When she didn't reply, the look in his eyes changed, concern evident as he asked her if she was alright.

He sighed. "You know you can always ask me anything, right? If you wanted to leave, you should've just said so. Or did you really think I wouldn't notice if you were going to sneak out?" He gave her a toothy grin in an attempt to get her cheerfulness back, but all she could do was stare at him as he smiled that goofy smile of his. She had to admit that his smile could make her weak in her knees and she was extremely happy that she was not standing on her feet at that moment.

"Princess Lucy thought she could outrun a dragon!" Natsu laughed out loud, "Don't you know how the fairy tales go, Luce? The dragon always wins!" but when he still couldn't get a response out of his partner, he stopped. Even though he could usually get a reaction out of her whenever he said those kind of things, she was still sitting on the edge of her bed, frozen like one of Gray's magic ice sculptures.

When Natsu got up and started walking towards her, she followed him with her eyes, watching every move he made. She saw the muscles of his jaw contract beneath his skin as he swallowed when she kept on staring him down. She watched him as he moved closer and closer, feeling her cheeks heat up when she finally noticed how little clothing he was wearing. She didn't blame him for walking around half-naked, though, because suddenly it really was incredibly hot in there.

"Your face is all red, Luce. You still feeling sick?" He sat down next to her, their eyes connecting for a brief moment before she looked away. He placed his hand on her wrist, applying light pressure, forcing her to look back at him. Her cheeks flared even more and she forgot how to breathe. It was obvious she liked him, but Lucy herself was not ready to acknowledge that yet. Partly because she knew Natsu could never share her feelings. The dense Dragon Slayer next to her had never heard of the word 'love' and the only vocabulary he possessed when it came to relationships was that of 'nakama' and 'family'.

"You're really burning up!" As his warm hand touched her forehead, she couldn't resist the urge to just close her eyes and enjoy the warmth he was radiating. Her mind was yelling at her to stop acting like an idiot and when she finally got the message, she pulled her head away from his touch and looked in another direction, hoping he hadn't seen the evident blush on her cheeks. Her body started to scare her. She did not want to react to him like that because it would probably ruin the friendship they already had.

Natsu's smile fell, a sudden sadness befalling him, though he did not quite understand why she affected him this much. He wanted to see her smile. He wanted to make her heart race, loud enough so even a normal person could hear it. He wanted her to be happy.

"Why wouldn't I be hot? It's like a freaking sauna in here!" Lucy finally said as she made eye contact again. At that, Natsu's face immediately lit up, making Lucy fully aware of his staring eyes on hers. "A-and you sitting so close to me, it- It isn't helping much either!" She stuttered and as realization set in, Lucy hoped he hadn't heard the last part.

There was a silence before Natsu burst out in laughter. "So, you're saying I'm hot? It's not entirely due to my sexy body, I have to give my magic some credit for the hotness, though, but thanks for the compliment, Lucy!" That made her smile, still aware of the faint blush that was covering her cheeks, but it did not matter anymore.

"Don't be so full of yourself! And I know very well how fairy tales go, thank you very much! For your information, dragons always lose and a handsome and valiant prince comes to slay the beast and rescues the damsel in distress!" Natsu smiled as he listened to her explanation, watching her happy expression while she talked.

"Not in my fairy tales they don't." Lucy stopped laughing as he said that. His expression had changed again and she panicked when he suddenly started to lean in. He gently grabbed her hand in his before placing her palm on his chest. She gulped, not knowing what to do. Her heart was racing and she could feel the excitement boil inside of her body. He leaned in even closer and whispered in her ear. "Do you feel how hot I am? It's because.." Lucy couldn't speak. "..I'm a dragon."

It took Lucy a few moments to realize what had just happened while Natsu was clutching his stomach as he laughed. "Lucy, you're so weird! Of course I'm hot! I'm a dragon, remember!" He laughed even harder, having problems catching his breath. Lucy threw her pillow at his face in an attempt to hide her own tomato-red one. She should've known that the thing she was expecting would never in a billion years happen. Not if he had to initiate it.

Suddenly, she was pulled to her feet and shoved inside the bathroom. She had to steady herself on the white porcelain sink due to the fact she hadn't been on her feet for a while now. She turned her head, wanting to ask what was going on, but she was met with a white door. As she looked at the closed door she remembered the time that Erza had forced her to buy them since turquoise curtains were the only thing sheltering her from the prying eyes of intruders. Said intruders obviously being Natsu and at times even Gray or any member of her team for that matter. "You should buy doors, Lucy! Mira gave Natsu a copy of your apartment key and he can enter whenever he wants! You don't want him to see you when you're bathing, right? Right?!" Those words had been engraved in her memory since Erza had never been so scary as when said redhead had pushed her into a store. Lucy didn't even have the courage to tell Erza that Natsu never even bothered to use the key because he always came barging in through the window.

"Luce, are you sleeping in there? I'm not hearing you undress yourself!" Before Lucy could even respond to that, Natsu already provided her with an explanation. "The whole reason you wanted to sneak out was because you're bored, right? Well, so am I! So let's get out of here!" Lucy smiled and for the first time in three days she was happy that Natsu had chosen to stay with her instead of heading off to the guild on his own. She loved how he always was so selfless when it came down to his friends and she had often found herself looking for that kindness in others, but nobody could quite compare to his.

When Lucy emerged from the bathroom, clad in a white halter-top, which was held up around her neck with two black ribbons, and a black miniskirt with white knee-high socks to match her top, Natsu just stared in awe. He had been putting on his vest, but the moment she had stepped into his line of sight, he couldn't move. Her hair was held together by a black ribbon at the side, exposing her soft neck, which made Natsu's heart leap.

"What?" She tilted her head slightly, "Do I look weird?" self-consciously looking down.

"N-no. Not at all." For a moment, Lucy thought she had seen a faint blush on his cheeks, but discarded the thought as she was once again thinking about how Natsu wasn't capable of blushing for anything other than things that excited him. This thought made Lucy sigh. Her partner really was weird sometimes because any other guy would kill to have her and there Natsu was, not caring about anything she did or how she dressed up for him. And even after all this time Natsu still was convinced she was the weird one of the two.

"So, where are we going?" She asked, suddenly feeling excitement bubbling in her stomach, snapping him out of his own thoughts. She noticed how startled he was by her question and suddenly, curiosity replaced the excitement, wanting to know what his mind had been occupied with just then.

"To the guild of course! Let's go on a mission!" He smiled, quickly averting his gaze from hers. He headed for the door, opening it for her. She had to admit that she was surprised when he acted like a true gentleman for her, having to stifle a giggle as to not let him notice how amusing she thought this was. It just didn't fit his character at all, though she might be able to get used to it.

She was still curious, her eyes staring him down as she walked towards him. He was trying to hide something from her and she was set on finding out what. Her own mind was working, trying hard to think of a way to get him to spill his secrets. Her thoughts were abruptly interrupted however, when she tried to pass him. He slammed his hand in front of her against the other side of the door-post, blocking her way. She looked up into his face, confusion in her brown eyes. The quick action had startled the Celestial Spirit Mage to the point where she couldn't muster up the words to form the words to even respond.

He leaned in, so very slowly, it made her heart stop as he touched his forehead against hers, their eyes never breaking contact. Tingles were spreading in her body from that contact point and she had difficulty registering what he was saying. "Listen carefully, ok. When I find out your cold is getting worse, you're going straight back to bed. No complaining and no excuses, got that?" He stared into her honey-brown eyes and she managed to nod slightly as her heart hammered away in her chest, her curiosity long forgotten.

"Good." He grinned, backing away and walking ahead of her like nothing had just happened.

She, however, had to steady her shaking frame against the door-post to not fall to the ground.

"So, she's finally back." A hooded figure said as he watched his two comrades walk in.

"Yes. After seven years, the princess has finally returned." Another hooded figure said as he kneeled before the first.

"Not a princess, a queen." The third said, after closing the wooden door behind them, shutting out the only supply of clean air they got in – what seemed like – such an old room, that it hadn't been used in over a decade.

"You must be happy that your fiancé is among the living again. If it weren't for The Vermillion, though, she would've been of age right now and we could've made our move sooner, but I guess we can't be angry. After all, The Vermillion did save her from him." The hooded figure appeared to be a young man as he revealed his face and rose from his throne.

"You were lucky that their Master saved them, we all were. What would we have done if she hadn't?"

"If I can remember anything about The Vermillion, it is that she doesn't like innocent blood to be spilled. Especially not if it's her own fault. You see, The Vermillion was and still is very much aware of that girl's identity and she will do anything in her power to save her from the horrible fate that awaits her." The young man said as he looked up and met the eyes of his two comrades, who were kneeling before him.

"Prince, may I ask how you even knew that she was the one?"

"Let's just say that a little bird told me to stay away from her. She said that we weren't supposed to interfere. How ironic it is, because our dear Lucy has joined her guild."
