I am super super super sorry for the big delay! In my defensive, my other story is slightly popular and I sort of got writer's block when it came to this story. Hey, at least I update!
Anyways, a big thank you for everyone who reviewed, favorited, or are following this story. I hope I didn't lose any of my readers. Enjoy the chapter!
I do not owe the Hunger Games.
Later that day, Johanna and Blight were sitting in the waiting room, anxiously watching the clock tick by as it got closer and closer to the time for Johanna's appointment. Looking around the room with a worried gaze, Blight noticed that all the couples in the room were either married or about sixteen. He smiled softly at a teary eyed girl- she was no older than fifteen- whose boyfriend was squeezing her hand. He was so, so grateful that he was no longer that dumb sixteen year old, rather a twenty year old with a decent job that made at least enough money to support his family.
Johanna was reading a book that Madge had been begging her to read the past few weeks. The other girl had gabbed on and on about how good Beautiful Creatures was, until Johanna had finally given in and told her she'd read the darn book.
"You're so full of crap, you could pass for a toilet," I-
"Johanna Mason?" An overly-perky nurse called out, holding a clipboard firmly in her left hand as she plastered a false smile to her face. Johanna held up her hand, sadly closing her book. Blight helped her stand and the nurse lead them to a room. "Hello, I'm Mrs. Grey," the nurse introduced, "Now, you need to change out of your clothes and into this," She handed a gown to Johanna who took it reluctantly. "As soon as you change we can get started. Any questions?" The nurse asked.
"Nope," Johanna shook her head and waited for a moment, watching as Mrs. Gray retreated out the door, closing it shut with a click. She cast a quick glance over her shoulder. "Blight, face the wall or something, I have to get changed."
He made an incredulous face and snorted. "I'm not a five year old in time out. I think the fact that we're in this room is reason enough for me not to turn around and 'face the wall or something'."
Johanna rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to argue, but decided she'd get absolutely nowhere with Blight and instead compromised to changing quickly. When she turned back around to face him, the first thing she noticed was the pile of gloves- blown up into balloons- lying around his feet. She scowled and shook her head disapprovingly, leaving Blight to grin innocently. Without saying a single word about it, she sat down on the large, padded, leather chair, leaning back on it and taking a deep breath. "Honestly, sometimes you act like the same idiot that got himself stuck behind bars," Johanna muttered under her breath, crossing her arms over her chest.
Blight's smile faded away and he walked over to his girlfriend, carefully taking her hand in his. "I'm really sorry about getting arrested like that," he said solemnly, his thumb sweeping across the back of her hand.
Johanna sighed, running her free hand through his brown locks. "I know you are, Blight. I just, I get so worried sometimes, I can't help but think maybe one day- ouch!" Johanna was cut off by a sharp kick to her stomach.
"What- what's wrong?" Blight asked quickly, panic dripping into his voice.
"It's the twins," Johanna huffed. "They're kicking like they want to make the all-star soccer team." She looked up at Blight and smiled weakly. "You wanna feel?" Johanna took their intertwined hands and placed his on her stomach.
He waited for what felt like an eternity, but was really only seconds, before one of them kicked. Hard.
"Wow," He breathed out in awe, still amazed by the fact that two living beings were growing inside Johanna. He was so enthralled by the babies' kicking he didn't even feel the tears of joy in his eyes. "Are you going to cry?" Johanna accused, noticing how Blight's eyes glistened. "Don't you dare cry on me, Blight! If you cry then I'll cry!" She snapped, feeling tears in her own eyes. "Stupid hormones," Johanna mumbled under her breath.
Blight only laughed, and leaned down to kiss her forehead. "I love you," He whispered, smiling at his beautiful girlfriend.
"I love you, too," Johanna whispered back. Just then, Mrs. Gray walked in without even bothering to knock, that false smile still stuck to her face. "Alrighty, let's get started shall we?"
"Star, for the five hundredth time, I don't want you hanging out with that Grace kid," Finnick said sternly. He had been arguing with his sister for quite some time about it on Skype, but she continued to ignore his thoughts.
She had come back from cheer practice not to long ago and had been talking about a Sophmore football player who asked her out to a movie date.
Well, if you could call it that. They only saw each other as friends, after all.
Star crossed her arms over her chest, pouting obnoxiously. "But Finnick!" She whined, "We're just friends! Besides, Jason has a thing going on with Piper!"
Finnick closed his eyes in frustration, rubbing his temples as he thought for a moment.
His teenage sister would be the death of him.
"Well," Finnick finally sigh, defeated. "I'm just glad it's Jason and not that Jackson kid."
Star rolled her light blue eyes at her brother's immaturity, "Are you seriously still holding a grudge against that?" She snorted just at the idea of it. "Finnick, it happened a year ago."
"But he beat me, Star! I was unbeatable until that stupid freshmen punk waltzed his way in," Finnick lifted his chin up in a snobby way, crossing his arms. "Nobody beats Finnick Jefferson Greyson Odair."
"Whatever Finn," Star muttered and glanced at her phone. "Oh! It's Jason! He's outside, I gotta let you go, bro."
Finnick sighed sadly; he missed the long conversations he used to have with his sister. "Alright little sis. Love you, Star. Be careful, okay?"
"I will Finnick." With that, Star ended the video chat, leaving her older brother to his thoughts.
His sister was growing up so fast that sooner rather than later he'd be back in Panem, just in time to watch her graduate.
"Too soon, too soon," He whispered to himself, shaking his head in disbelief.
"What's too soon?" A familiar voice asked, and Finnick turned around to find his girlfriend walking into the room.
"Nothing much, Love. I just keep thinking about the fact that in only three years I'll be back in Panem watching my baby sister's senior graduation." Annie grinned at her boyfriend, walking over and kissing his forehead.
"Three years is a long way, Finn. Try not to think about how old you're getting." She teased.
"You're mean, Cresta," Finnick snickered, unable to keep the smile off his face. Annie only giggled, giving her boyfriend a quick kiss.
Two days later, they left the hotel to tour the more rural side of Texas, much to the joy of the boys. Marvel's cousin, Jack, lived in a small town that they were planning to stay in for a while. The twenty two year old had a home that would hopefully fit them all.
"And you're sure your cousin isn't weirdly obsessed with rodeos or anything, right?" Glimmer inquired. Despite the amount of times she had been at Marvel's house, she had never seen nor heard about this cousin.
Laughing, Marvel shook his head. "I don't think so." He glanced at the picture Jack had sent him. "He owns a small ranch just outside of town that we can visit sometime." Smiles could be seen throughout the RV. No one had been on a ranch since their school trip to 10's livestock farms when Glimmer had declared herself a vegetarian.
Two hours and a game of poker later, they arrived in the town. Glancing out the window, the first thing that popped out at Marvel was the lack of trees. The second was the heat.
Doing a double check to the thermometer displayed on his dashboard, he let out a low whistle. "Guy's it's over ninety degrees!" A collective groan echoed through the RV. "It's a good thing Jack lives near a pool…" Marvel finished to cheering.
They parked the RV in front of the house and Marvel called his cousin to make sure he was home. "Jack says he's home but the door isn't working. We'll have to climb in through the window." "I just had a pedicure!" Glimmer shouted.
"And one of us is in her fourth month of pregnancy, if you've forgotten." Johanna reminded them.
Gale stepped up to the door. "Don't worry, Jo. With your mood swings, it would be hard to forget even if we wanted to." He stood there, gazing at the door for a moment, before swiftly taking it down with just one kick.
A collective glance towards Gale practically screams 'Was that necessary?' He shrugs. Putting an arm around Madge's shoulder, he says, "Well? Go on in, Marvel."
Marvel took a moment to glare at the hunter before slowly walking in, careful to step over the splintered door that lay broken on the ground. He called out for his cousin once, looking to his left. Just as he turned towards the other side he was promptly judo-flipped to the ground.
"Ow!" Marvel groaned, rubbing the back of his head with his eyes squeezed shut.
"Marvel!" Clove shouted, anger quickly flooding over her to the point where she couldn't stand there any longer. Using her past defense lessons, she quickly tackled the attacker to the ground. She quickly pinned the guy down, shoving her knee into his back.
"Hey! Wait! Let me go!" The unknown guilty party speaks up. "Marvey, get this pyscho chick off of me!"
"Marvey?" Gale questioned, smirking. "I'll have to use that one." For a moment Marvel let Clove pin his cousin down, picturing himself in Jack's position. He smirked at the thought, but then shook himself out of it.
"Clove, get off of him," He demanded, walking over to his girlfriend and wrapping his arms around her waist. He pulled her off of Jack and set her down next to himself, watching as she glared viciously at his cousin.
"This idiot tried to jump you." She said.
Marvel coughed. "That idiot is my cousin," he clarified. "Believe it or not that is how Jack greets people."
Cato and Gale burst into laughter, leaning against one another to keep from falling over as Clove turned a bright shade of red.
"Wow, Clove, you must really have something against Marvel's family," said Johanna, walking into the house to use the bathroom.
Jack couldn't help but shamelessly rake his eyes over each girl that passed him, smiling from ear to ear and letting out a wolf whistle. "Hey Marvel, why didn't you tell me you had such hot friends?" He winks at Katniss, who rolled her eyes in disgust. Peeta possessively wrapped an arm around Katniss's waist, pulling her close to him and letting Jack know 'She's taken'.
The boy with the bread took a good look at Jack, and couldn't help but notice how vastly different he looked from his cousin. While Marvel was lean and slightly muscular, Jack was insanely muscular. He was also taller than Cato, who stood at 6'2. Marvel dressed in casual clothes, jeans and a tee shirt, Jack was clad in a muscle shirt with an eagle printed on it. The words 'Born to Fly' were directly under the majestic bird's claws. He also had on dark, tight jeans and the obvious cowboy boots. Basically the average Texan guy.
"So Jack, I'd like you to meet my friends." Marvel introduced. "Friends, this is my cousin."
Back in Panem, the weather had cooled a bit from the blistering heat that only an alien from Mars could survive. School was just around the corner; only two weeks away, and the cheer squad and football team of Panem High were elated at the prospect. On the first day of school the cheerleaders would put on a show at the pep rally, a school tradition, to welcome everybody back. They had been working on their routine as well as a few new ones since cheer camp.
Prim, who had wanted to be a cheerleader since that very first time she saw Katniss standing upon the pyramid about to win captain of the year, was more than excited.
"Girls, make sure you're not bending your knees when you kick," instructed JV's cheer captain, Drew. "We don't want to look incompetent, now." By no means would anyone consider Drew Tanaka the nicest person in the world, but she was a good captain. "Okay, girls, break time!"
All of the cheerleaders collapsed on the ground, exhausted from the two hours of practice- and how hard Drew forced them to work. Star slowly rose from the floor, grabbing three water bottles from the cooler. She handed two of them to Prim and Rue.
"I swear, Drew will be the end of of me," Star said, taking a gulp of her water.
"It's not that bad," Rue objected, retying the bright red bow on top of her head. "Besides, we did mess up half of the routine."
"True, but it was only the first minute. We finished strong." Prim pointed out. The three girls sat in a makeshift circle, talking to each other about anything and everything for awhile until three Sophomores sat down in front of them.
"Hey guys," Annabeth Chase, a gorgeous girl with bright, curly blonde hair and light grey eyes, greeted.
"Hey," The freshmen chirped, excited to see Annabeth. They liked her well enough since they shared a cabin together along with the other two girls by her side, Piper Mclean and Hazel Levesque. Even when they returned back from camp the girls made it a point to stay in touch and even have sleepovers every now and then.
"So," Annabeth began, easily getting everyone's attention. "Percy's sixteenth birthday is coming up this weekend, and a couple of his friends along with us are planning a party as Jason's house." The freshmen found it adorable how Annabeth blushed at the mention of the football player as she spoke.
"You three want to come?" Piper finished for Annabeth excitedly, unable to handle the dramatic pause.
All of the girls were shocked by the invitation, and shared raised eyebrows and questioning looks with each other until finally Star spoke up. "That would be awesome!" She beamed, radiating elation. She flashed the same million dollar smile her brother had before asking the real question. "Um, Is uh, Is Leo going to be there?" Hazel giggled at the girl's question and nodded her head.
"Of course! It wouldn't be a party without Leo's 'Joke'" She put air quotes around 'jokes' which made all the girls giggle.
"Alright ladies! Break time is over!" Drew called, interrupting the six girls as she blew her obnoxious pink whistle.
Another hour of cheer practice went by; in which the girls spent most time panting and sweating, before it finally ended. Star and Rue decided to hitch a ride with Annabeth since she lived near them. Annabeth also offered a ride to Prim, but the blonde declined since she didn't live that far from the High School. Although that was with some sort of mode of transportation. Without one she was left to shiver in the cold as she walked since she had stupidly forgotten her cheer sweater.t
"Aw man," she muttered, wrapping her arms around herself in a weak attempt to keep warm. She walked a few steps, grumbling to herself, before she felt the warmth of a jacket fall upon her shoulders. "What the…?" She mumbled, turning around to see who had just bestowed this gift upon her.
"I thought you looked cold," A voice that made Prim's heart pound spoke.
"Rory?" She asked, looking at the boy who had saved her from the cold.
He chuckled and stepped up so he was standing next to her. "Sorry if I scared you, but since you didn't hear me calling for you I just decided to catch up." Prim felt her cheeks flush accordingly at the thought. He had caught up to her and gave her his jacket.
"That's so sweet," She grinned and set her bag on the floor to slip her arms into the sleeves, sighing in content as warmth soothed her frozen arms. "Thanks, Rory."
Together they walked in a comfortable silence for a while until Rory suggested they get some ice cream. Even with the cold, Prim readily agreed since her mom was still at work anyways. Since the ice cream parlor wasn't that far away it didn't take the two long to get the delicious dessert and get back on track towards Prim's home.
"So Prim," Rory began, anxiety dripping into his voice. "Can I ask you something?"
"Shoot," Prim said, feeling butterflies in her stomach as her mind swept through all the different possibilities. Rory took a deep breath and gently intertwined his fingers with Prim's, turning her to face him.
"So, you know how we've been doing all these things together, like getting ice cream?" He asked, holding his own up for proof. Prim nodded quickly, wanting him to just get on with it.
"Well, I was wondering… will you…" Prim felt her heart began to beat a mile a second as she stared into his beautiful eyes, waiting. This moment was finally here, finally happening. Nothing could ruin it.
"Will you wear my jersey at the first home game?" Rory asked expectantly.
Okay, so maybe that could ruin the moment, but hey! All Prim has ever heard is that if a football player ever asked you to wear his jersey it meant he liked you, so that was something, right? "Sure Rory, I'll wear your jersey." She said, the biggest smile on her face.
They had lived with Jack for a few days and it had all gone well so far, much to Glimmer's surprise. in all honesty, everyone was a little surprised. Before they had even arrived they had already been preparing for a chubby man in his mid-twenties who wouldn't know what 'clean' meant if the word slapped him in the face. What they got was a good-looking guy with a neatly organized house that didn't smell like the expected sweat and dirt.
Today Jack had planned for them to head out to his farm that was only about an hour away. Everyone was excited about going to the farm besides who Glimmer, who wasn't big on them.
"It's so dirty! And some idiotic duck always ends up following me," She scowled before shoveling another bite of breakfast into her mouth that morning. "I hate ducks," She added, mouth half full.
"Ducks like to follow pretty women," Jack commented, winking not-so-subtly at the Glimmer. Cato glared at Marvel's cousin. Not at all impressed with his flirting skills.
"Get your own girl," He growled.
Jack's smug look caused Cato to go red. "Chill Blondie; I got a girl." He informed, smirking, "She's just not here."
"Where's she at?" Marvel asked curiously.
"New York," Jack answered, taking a bite out of his bacon. "Hopefully she'll be back before Halloween." Once everyone had finished breakfast they all got dressed and headed to their respective vehicles. Jack had planned to lead everyone to the farm in his truck while the RV, which Cato still called Cherrybomb, followed behind.
After a long, boring hour they arrived at the farm. It wasn't very big, but it was adorable. There was a small, red barn where horses watched them from, a chicken coop, a goat pen, a pig pen, and of course it wouldn't be fun without Glimmer's worse fear; ducks. They wandered around everywhere they like they ruled the damn world.
"I think I'll stay inside, thank you," She muttered, sitting back down and continuing to read her Seventeen magazine. "Logan Lerman is so cute…" She added as she flipped a page.
Without warning, Blight yanked the Magazine from Glimmer's hand and picked her up, tossing her over his shoulder. "Come on, Barbie, you're going whether you like it or not," he smirked. Laughter erupted from the group as Blight carried Glimmer out of the RV and quickly slammed the door shut. He then hid the key on Johanna, somewhere where if Glimmer even reached for it she'd get a black-eye.
Even though Jack was amused by the whole ordeal he figured it was time to get down to business and turned towards his farm, whistling loudly. Within seconds a black stallion emerged from the shadows, loyally walking up to his owner.
"This here is Aero," Jack patted the horse's neck before heading off to get the riding equipment and put it on him. After he had the horse saddled up he turned and smiled at everyone. "And we're going out for a ride." The guys each picked their own horse and they all went out to ride in the open fields.
When the guys were done the girls, also got a turn minus Johanna. As they were riding, Cato noticed a large black animal and decided to let his curiosity get the best of him. "Hey Jack, what's that animal you got back there?" He asked the cowboy.
Jack looked over at the young man thoughtfully, taking a moment to figure out what he was talking about. "Oh!" He finally exclaimed, realizing what Cato meant. "You mean Thor?" . The cowboy laughed out loud. "That's my bull. Sometimes I let those rodeo guys use. I've had him since he was born."
Something clicked in Marvel's head and he also remembered the bull. That animal was Jack's prize possession; he was as special to Jack as makeup was to Glimmer.
"Can we ride him?" Cato asked, followed by cheers of agreement from the rest of the guys.
Katniss, however, saw the danger in this where the guys didn't. "Wait, Cato, you aren't-"
"Well sure you can!" Jack beamed, interrupting Katniss, who huffed in annoyance. "I'll go get him ready for you."
Once Jack was out of eyesight, Katniss smacked Cato's arm. He flinched and turned to her. "Hey, what was that for?"
"You know you can't ride a bull right?" She demanded.
"Yeah, so?" Cato deadpanned.
"So?" Madge laughed at his stupidity. "You could get killed, idiot!" Annie stood between Cato and Madge. She had been listening to the pointless bicker go back and forth, and finally picked a side.
"Guys, I think this is the perfect opportunity."
"I know Annie, they shouldn't- wait! What did you say?" Madge asked, awestruck by the prospect Anni was siding with the guys. She needed to hear this again. Annie calmly repeated what she had said, smiling at Madge.
"What can go wrong?" Unfortunately for Annie, she had no idea how much she would regret those words later.
Anything can go wrong! Fortunately, I already started writing chapter 20 and I am sort of almost done so expect another update soon.
Again, I am super sorry for the delay and please forgive. Until next time!
