Darkcloud POV - Takes place roughly 6 moons after the end of RtoR.
I trudged through the brambles, grumbling under my breath as they snagged on my fur. I really hate the genius whoever though it'd be a good idea to live in a thorn patch. Mapleclaw was clearly having the same problem, but she was also having troubles with everything these days.
Apparently being an expecting Queen was not fun. She constantly complained (more than usual) and ever since Bramblestar banned her from doing warrior duties, she has been worse than usual.
This was the last Gathering she was going to until after she had her kits. And she was not happy about that fact.
I watched as for the millionth time, Mapleclaws fluffy tail caught on a bramble and she had to tug it free. Larchwhisker took a step forward, about to help her but my sister merely glared her down, "Touch me and you die."
Larchwhisker didn't touch her.
I let out a short sigh of relief as we finally made it out of the thick undergrowth and to the lake. I could see ShadowClan appearing out of their territory too. But with ShadowClan, came Scareyes, who was being guided by Applefur.
Scareyes was given her warrior name shortly after I clawed out her eyes. She had moved to the elders den right away and was basically completely useless to her Clan.
I still don't regret it.
As I watched ShadowClan, I couldn't help but notice someone slinking in the background. Someone who didn't belong to ShadowClan. I narrowed my eyes, but was only able to make out the brown tail before it had disappeared.
"Darkcloud?" I snapped out if my trance when Toadstep called my name.
"Thought I saw something..." I muttered. If it was anyone else, I would have told them to mind their own business, but this was Toadstep. I wasn't exactly friends with him but it's not like I could hate the cat that was about to start a family with my sister.
We reached the island and I easily made it across the fallen tree and hopped down. Gatherings used to be fun when I was an apprentice and came with Honeyfeather, Larkwing, Mapleclaw and Thistlefang.
But now I was a warrior and Larkwing and Thistlefang were dead, Honeyfeather was back at camp, nursing her three newborn kits and Mapleclaw was too busy handling her social life.
By social life I mean checking up on a few kits she saved many moons ago. They weren't exactly kits anymore but they practically idolized her.
I trotted up to my sister was sharing tongues with the new warriors. "Hello mouse-brains." I nodded sarcastically to the four. The dark gray she-cat rolled her eyes and lashed her tail.
"I'm not as naive as I was back then." Smolderfur stomped her foot.
"Well you sure act like a kit. And you're kind of short too. You look like an apprentice who has to clean the elders den." I sneered and her brothers and sister snickered.
"Let the gathering begin." Bramblestars voice rang out over the clearing and I snorted. Someone needs to tell my father how absolutely stupid and pathetic he sounds.
"ThunderClan has been plentiful in prey and it seems that this will be a good leaf-bare. Sunstrike and Mapleclaw have also moved to the nursery recently and three sunrises ago, Honeyfeather and Foxleap had their first litter of kits." Bramblestar announced.
Onestar took that as his cue to step forward, "All is well in WindClan, though we've been scenting rogue on our territory lately... and ThunderClan." the WindClan leader narrowed his eyes at Bramblestar and the fur along my back immediately rose.
"Don't start anything, Darkcloud." Brightheart snapped at me and I hissed at her. Even though I was made warrior nearly 8 moons ago, she still treats me like an apprentice.
"Have you seen any ThunderClan warriors on your territory?" Bramblestar challenged.
"Sedgewhisker said that she spotted a dark brown cat lurking in the shadows, though it was too dark to see him clearly." Onestar snapped back. "We've also had Curlpaw say she's seen a black she-cat running across the plains and into ThunderClan."
Black she-cat?
"We've scented ThunderClan on our territory as well!" Mistystar piped up. Blackstar looked like he wanted to say something, but going along with his better judgement decided to just shut up for once. "And rogue as well..."
"That's just stupid!" I snarled, "Why would ThunderClan go all the way across the lake to have to deal with the stench of rotting fish?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure we have better things to do other than running around the Clans and causing trouble." Mapleclaw sneered. At that comment, Reedwhisker narrowed his eyes.
"Maybe it was you we're smelling." he accused and both me and my sister snorted.
"Yes, I am clearly going all the way to RiverClan." Mapleclaw said sarcastically and motioned to her fat stomach. There was no way she was walking all the way across the lake if she didn't need to.
"Well, that doesn't stop your brother!" Reedwhisker snapped and all the attention was turned to me. My claws instantly slid out and my fur bristled. "Your entire family is full of snakes! Ever since you three were born, you have caused nothing but trouble!"
How original. Really, I've never heard that one before.
"I agree!" RiverClan cats started shouting and my tail lashed. Looks like it's another Pick On Darkcloud Day.
"It was a blessing from StarClan when I heard Thistlefang died." Reedwhisker added. That was the last straw.
My eyes darkened and I took a few steps forward so I was towering over the RiverClan deputy. "I'll give you one chance to repeat that, and if I don't like what you have to say, RiverClan won't be having a deput anymore."
"ENOUGH!" Blackstar roared. He had been silent until now. "We do not know who has been lurking around the Clans but it is clear that ThunderClan weren't aware of this! If anyone knows anything about this, then step forward!"
I was half expecting one of the younger warriors like Barktooth of Shrewfoot to step forward and admit to their mistake. But she was the last cat I expected to see.
Night stepped out of the shadows, her black fur with scattered gray hairs hung off her starving frame but her amber eyes still gleaming with the same malicious expression as they were so many moons ago.
"Nightcloud?" Crowfeather gasped and she smirked.
"Miss me?"
The crowd fell silent. Even I was at a loss for words. I thought I had made myself clear when I told her I wouldn't hesitate to kill her if she ever showed her face again.
"What are you doing here, Night?" Onestar snarled. She was clearly not a favorite amongst her former Clan.
"You wanted to know who was sneaking around the Clans." she shrugged, "Actually, that's a lie. I came back for revenge."
There was only silence.
"And there's only one cat who can give that to me." Night whirled around and looked directly into my eyes. Whispers rose from the crowd. None of them understood; I only ever told Mapleclaw and Thistefang about my interaction with Night and Breeze on the day of the battle.
"I thought I made myself clear when I told you to leave." I snarled.
"Darkcloud, what is going on?" Bramblestar asked sternly. "Have you been meeting up with-"
"Even your own Clan doubts your loyalty!" Night laughed, "You should have taken my offer when you had the chance!"
"And you should have left when you had the chance." I retorted. "Now it's time you went and met up with your son in the Dark Forest-"
There was gasps when everyone figured out what I meant. But Bramblestars voice boomed over the others.
"Darkcloud, you will not fight at the Gathering! I have let you get away with countless despicable acts but this is where I refuse to let you go any fur-"
"Countless acts?" I repeated, "I have never done anything to make you say that! I have never fallen in love with another Clan cat, I have never trained with the Dark Forest, and I have fought for this Clan with my life!"
Bramblestar opened his mouth but I cut him off, "You don't even understand what lengths I have gone to protect this Clan! What my family has done for ThunderClan! I am not asking for your permission to kill this traitor, but if StarClan has a problem with it then they can intervene themselves."
"So StarClan, send me a sign! Send me a sign if you want this to end!" I called to the moon. We all waited expectantly for something to happen. For a cloud to cover the moon or for lightning to strike across the sky. But nothing happened.
I slowly looked from the sky back to Night with vengeance in my eyes. "It's time to die."
All confidence seemed to drain from Nights features as I lunged forward, bowling her into the dusty ground and digging my claws into her sides. I threw her across the small clearing that the Clans had made for us. Nobody intervened.
My fury was boiling with every step I took closer to her, "You started a war, you stole innocent kits..." I slashed my claws against her chest, making her fall back. Night scrambled to get back on her feet but I knocked her over again.
"You are the reason Larkwing is lying in the ground right now. You're the reason I was outcastes by my own Clan!" I spat as I slashed my claws against her stomach. She was almost too weak to fight but she managed to lunge at me and bowl me over.
I leapt to my feet and the two of us began circling each other. This was a fight to the death.
"You blame your problems on me but I'm not the one who turned everyone against you. I didn't put words in your mouth or unsheath your claws for you. Every reason these cats hate you is your own fault!" Night hissed. Her paws shot forward and scratched me across my nose. I winced and took a few steps back.
"I haven't done anything wrong-"
That's when I lost it. It was like all the anger just exploded in side of me and I had t take it out of Night. I launched myself forward in a flurry of clawing and bites, hitting anywhere that would cause the most amount of pain to the lying she-cat.
"You tried to get me to kill my own father, you pathetic snake!" I snarled and dug my claws into her throat. This was her end.
Night wasn't dead yet as I pulled myself away from her. Blood was pouring out of her neck at a disgusting rate but no one helped her. My last words were still sinking in but all seemed shocked.
"Throw her body in the lake when she finally dies." I ordered before turning and walking away. Night and Breeze were finally gone; they couldn't hurt me or my family anymore.
I would of course be questioned when Bramblestar got back to camp but I knew that no matter how hard he pushed me, I would not give him answers. They were dead and that's all that mattered.
They couldn't roam the Clans, stealing kits and starting wars. They couldn't hide in the shadows and leap from tree to tree, spying on me and my family. They were gone forever.
But even as I thought this, I knew my problems weren't over yet.
I miss these guys so much :'( Oh, and if you figured out my little hints I've been dropping throughout these One-shots (especially this chapter) leave the answer in a review! If you get it right, I will write you three one-shots of any characters you'd like!
