Author's note: AAARRRRGGHHH! Sooooo sorry I left for so long sweetie pies! It's just that exams came up and by the time they'd finished, so had the TVD series on television. That meant I had no more inspiration of spark to continue the story. But now, both the VD series and 'The Originals' is in town as I'm having a heyday! I thought I'd leave out all the ending of Season 4 I'd planned with Virgil in it because let's face it- that's old. Also, I've kind of had enough of the Stefan-Damon-Elena involvement in everything (sorry diehard Stelena and Delena fans!) and want to separate myself a little. After all, this is a fanfic about Klaus and now very conveniently, he has his own TV show. So...guess what? I'm putting the story in 'The Originals'!
Sorry again about the long delay! Feel free to send death threats. -_- anyhow, I'll try my best with the story and please do review! I've tried to keep true to Klaus's on-again, off-again character so feedback would be appreciated!
P.S. please don't mind maybe week long breaks. Unfortunately I have mock exams coming up (I hate school -_-) and sometimes I'm really busy. Rest assured, as long as Joseph Morgan continues to give top notch performance on the TV, I'll keep him alive in my fic.
Love y'all! (I talk too much)
Why did she even think of Klaus in the first place?
Why?
Virgil stopped just outside the Lockwood mansion as this thought came into her head. In all honesty, was there anyone she could trust with the information that had just crashed on her head like a thunderstorm?
Elena: her sister. Not by blood, but still someone who had taken her in when Virgil had been sent to her. She had taken care of her and been the mother and sister in one that she'd always wanted. But she was too closely linked with the Salvatores. And the Salvatores put her life ahead of even their own, so if Virgil endangered her, it would be bye-bye Virgil.
Bonnie and Caroline...really? She wasn't the girl they'd been best friends with since they were in diapers. And once they finally found out the truth about Virgil's link to the two most dangerous immortals in the history of the universe, there would be no more "hey girl! Let's join the prom committee together!" from Caroline or nice girly chats with Bonnie.
And now with the parchment she had clutched in her hand, Virgil was starting to think if her life wasn't just a big joke the universe was playing to amuse itself. Everything was a lie. Everything.
She opened the scroll again.
There it was. In plain witch words for any witch to read:
My mistress wishes this to be kept a secret and if I took the liberty of confiding to anyone, I would have my tongue cut out and my powers stripped. But I cannot hold such a tremendous secret in my heart. The violet-eyed child will no doubt reincarnated once again- it is her fate to be chased and hunted down for the immense magical power of her blood. I hope that this parchment will be a warning to all my fellow sister witches in the future.
My mistress Qetsiyah endowed the child with all the powers of the witches who died in the yearly Harvest rituals for eighteen years. This child grew up to be the most formidable weapon in Qetsiyah's artillery until, of course, the lady found out that Silas had fed the child his elixir.
This child has too much power. So much so, that it is unnatural and goes against the laws of the spirits. As soon as she is reincarnated, she must die. All the witches of Qetsiyah's bloodline receive the task of getting together and killing her; if there are any less than a hundred, the child will triumph.
The child can be used to kill Silas but she cannot be allowed to live herself. She has too much magic running through her veins- sooner or later, it will start to affect her and she will snap- just like her parents did.
I have read her destiny. She is linked to the destruction of all witches.
So much for politeness. The apprentice must have known her name but yet she still called her "the child" as if Virgil's name was a curse. Other than that, this was wonderful- all unicorns and rainbows. Sooner or later she would go insane like her parents and lose control and then goodbye witches.
And what then?
Witches were too important to just disappear off the face of the earth. But Virgil didn't want to die again. Not now once she'd come back to life again.
This brought her back to why she had gone looking for Klaus. He had nothing to lose with the disappearance of all witches but he would be affected if she were to snap and go insane. After all, two thousand years ago, vampires hadn't been invented because Mama Original hadn't been born yet. This very well meant that Virgil could be the destruction for all supernatural beings. Or non-supernatural also seeing as the population of humans was far greater.
But what could Klaus do?
He's the most powerful immortal on this planet right now. He could take me away from here, away from the people I love and kill me if I go haywire. After all, I bet only he could manage it.
Virgil didn't like being self sacrificing. She didn't like it at all. But she'd rather spend her life to the fullest if Klaus took her away from all this and showed her the world before her inevitable breakdown and demise, than spending it here where if Bonnie Bennett found out about her origins, she'd be obliged to do what was best for her people- and it didn't help that she was one of Qetsiyah's descendants.
Question was, Klaus never did anything out of the goodness of his heart. What would he want in exchange?
Of course. The one thing he always wanted.
Power.
This thought made her think again. Maybe she should keep this scroll hidden from him for now. He could take it in many ways, not least for his own advantage- he was Klaus after all. She decided that the best way to approach this was to target the one side of Klaus he always tried to hide from everyone: his fear of loneliness.
(Author's Note: I kind of changed the sequence of events in Season 4 to speed things up, but as fanfics are supposed to be just a different interpretation of a story from a different author, I don't feel guilty. Some of the Klaus fanfics I read were better than the TVD series that's why I took the risk too. ^_^)
Virgil found him at last. But she wished she hadn't.
He looked insane.
Covered in blood, eyes bright, red lips set in his usual sullen pout- oh, and the unmistakeable stains of blood all over his face, hands and clothes.
"What-have-you-done?" she whispered.
She was standing on the opposite side of a fence to him just outside the woods. Whatever he had done, he had done in the thicket of the trees behind him under cover of the darkness.
"I did exactly what I should have done in the given situation," he said quietly. "Where's Tyler Lockwood?"
"Klaus would you even believe me if I said I genuinely don't know?" she sighed. "You've murdered your hybrids."
It was a statement. A plain one. Their was no disapproval, shock or horror- it was just an observation. It surprised Virgil as much as it seemed to surprise him.
"You don't sound at all whiny," Klaus remarked.
"What so you mean "whiny"?" she frowned, breathing a mental sigh of relief as she saw his face relax a little. She was on tenterhooks.
"Well, usually, someone like the Gilbert girl and Caroline would present me with a list of reasons why the White Oak tree should still exist because someone needs to impale me on its branches. You, on the other hand, look surprisingly calm."
"Killing is never the best thing to do Niklaus," Virgil said. "But those poor souls whose lives you just ended had no other better alternative. If they hadn't unsired themselves they would have been set for an existence of slavery- now that they had, you would have hunted them down no matter what anyone said to murder them. I can't speak against what is so obviously your nature. You're a hunter, a survivor- but I never said anything about the fact that I approve. I just chose to ignore."
"Yes, I thought the judgemental side would turn up sooner or later," he nodded, "now if you'll excuse me- I have one last rebellious "slave" to track down."
He opened the gate of the fence and made to walk past her, but Virgil reached out a hand and grabbed his arm. She tried not to reel at the stench of blood as he turned to raise an inquiring eyebrow.
"Klaus, I came to ask you a favour," she said.
"Ask a favour?" he said with mock surprise. "Why? I just tried to strip you of your honour a few hours ago. And yet you come to me for a favour?"
"Trust me, if I had another option I wouldn't even look at you," she said coldly.
She saw his eyes flicker with something and got the sudden thought that he must be used to people only coming to him for help as a last resort. Well- not her problem. She wasn't the one who'd decided to become the 'Daddy of all Baddies' had she? That title had to come with side effects and if Klaus was now feeling them, again-not her problem.
And yet, she could at least give the semblance that she cared. Family was everything to the Originals: 'Always and forever'. And now, it seemed as if true to Niklaus's words, Virgil was a part of it whether she wanted to be or not- without her they wouldn't be alive today and her blood ran through all their veins. She had to treat Klaus like Elijah did- with an iron hand disguised by a cotton glove.
"Look- I'm just feeling a bit edgy right now, okay? I didn't mean to snap. If I ask politely will you consider it?" she asked.
"What do you want?" he said brusquely, starting to walk quickly back across the field.
She had to run to keep up with him. "I just have a very bad foreboding that Silas will come back to life- and along with him, so will Qetsiyah. We can't stop them from returning- they were always meant to come back and if they're coming now then that's it. But I need to be as far away from here as possible when that happens."
"Why? A little family reunion never did anyone any harm," Klaus smirked.
Virgil tried to ignore the long sword he was spinning in his hands as he walked. God forbid a human saw him right now.
"Listen," she said sharply, once again grabbing his arm.
He pulled up just as sharply and jerked her towards him. "Grab my arm again and you won't have a hand to grab it with, do you understand?" he hissed.
"Why? You'll chop it off with the sword, huh? Do it- I dare you," she sneered.
Adrenaline coursed through her body. Their faces were inches from each other. This man was the most evil creature born possibly ever and yet deep inside her heart, she knew he wouldn't life a hand to hurt her. Was this how Caroline felt? Damn strange feeling.
He shoved her away from him with a disgusted look and rammed his sword into the ground. "Give me one good reason why I should take you away from here on a road trip."
"Because , Niklaus Mikaelson, of what your mother did 1000 years ago," Virgil replied quietly. This was a theory she had made up to scare Klaus into taking her- it might even have some truth in it but it was better than telling him the contents of the parchment in her pocket.
"Qetsiyah loathed herself for creating the immortality elixir after Silas abused her trust. That's why she made the Cure so that when Silas reawakens, he would take it and pass over to the side where he'd be faced by an eternity of torture from her. If she comes back and realizes that your mother brought her daughter back to life just so she could feed her blood to her own children and grant then immortality, you remaining three Originals will have to carry the weight of her revenge. She is one of the most powerful witches in the history of the universe- if she finds out my blood runs in you she can easily link you to me and then kill me all over again. That means that I'd take all three of you and the whole vampire race with me. How does that sound? Niklaus Mikaelson will cease to exist. As much as most people will find this a cause for celebration it's not good for me because I've barely had a chance to live my life properly before my insane mother or yours decides to bury me in the ground again."
Klaus studied her for a moment without speaking. For a heart stopping moment, Virgil thought that he hadn't believed any of it.
But then-
"And here I thought you had some genuine concern about me dying," he snorted mirthlessly.
Virgil looked away from his face for a second- she was trying not to feel sorry for him but it was hard not to sometimes. He was only an insecure, lonely soul trying to disguise the fact with actions that surpassed the normal bounds of cruelty and sadism. People like that were hard to find but when you faced them, they were even harder to deal with. Which was why she said:
"I promise you, if you ever give me enough reason to care about you like I do for Rebekah or even for Elijah and all my adopted family and friends, I'll give you the chance," she said.
They continued to look at each other.
"Keep your bloody chance. I don't need your sympathy," he snapped and turned to walk away.
Virgil sighed. This man's heart was like a diamond. And not in the good way- because everyone knows diamonds are almost impossible to crack.
But it didn't mean she wouldn't try.
(Author's Note: Sorry guys, you may find that I'm rushing through season 4 of VD here because I need to get to the part where Klaus leaves the town. So-wwyyy.)
Klaus had given into her request, but only after another week of absolute torture had gone by.
By the end of it, there was no doubt that Silas was back alive and kicking.
Katherine had the Cure, Bonnie was under a spell, Jeremy was dead, Elena had turned off her emotions and was somewhere in New York by now, Klaus had bitten and then healed Caroline, Klaus had sworn vengeance on Elena for Kol's murder, Klaus had told Tyler to run because he was going to hunt him down and kill him, Klaus had-
To hell with Klaus.
Virgil had remained in his mansion, not being able to go to Elena's house and see her sister doubled over in pain at Jeremy's loss. Under normal circumstances, Virgil would be in the same state but she knew otherwise. Jeremy was supernatural- he was a hunter- he could return from the other side. All it would require was Qetsiyah herself or one of her descendants. But seeing as Bonnie could die from the spell, Virgil was hoping her witch mother would hurry up and make an appearance so that Elena could strike a deal with her.
It was hard keeping this knowledge contained inside her and not being able to tell anyone. Rebekah was still enamoured with Matt and Elijah still hadn't turned up. Not to mention the burning pain somewhere inside what felt like her heart when Kol died. She didn't know what it was but it must have something to do with the blood connection.
That got her thinking: if she was in this much physical pain over the death of one Original, then surely the pain in her heart a year ago should be explained by the deaths of Finn and Mikael? Rebekah had told her about how they'd died and it seemed the days Virgil had run a high fever were the dates of their deaths. It was scary. What if something happened to all of them and she died with them. After all, the baloney she'd fed Klaus might be true but in the opposite way.
The front door crashed open and shut. Virgil leapt off her bed and ran out of the room.
"Rebekah? Oh, thank god! I thought I'd go insane with loneliness in here!" she exclaimed, flying down the stairs and straight into the arms of the blond vampire.
"Where's Nik?" Rebekah asked.
"No idea. I'm guessing he's still at the Salvatore mansion trying to work out how to get at Silas. It won't be that easy," Virgil replied. "But I thought you were searching for the Cure?"
"I am. I came to say goodbye. That bastard Damon ran off to search after a lead without me."
"You're leaving as well? That leaves me with Klaus all alone!" Virgil exclaimed.
"Look sweetheart, I'm sorry but you know how much that Cure means to me. A new life, a new beginning- family."
Virgil couldn't say anything in return, not when she saw the way Rebekah's eyes softened at the thought of family.
"Fine. I guess I'll have to stick this one out for myself," she shrugged.
"I'll be back as soon as I can to make sure my wanker of a brother hasn't done anything to you," Rebekah promised.
"He won't. he knows of my powers and the selfish dick needs them so he won't do anything to me. Just promise that if I call and I need you to come back, you'll come."
Rebekah promised and after one last hug, she vanished out of the door.
Virgil sat down on the floor where she was standing and felt her soul get cold. For the first time in her life, she felt empty. She had no aim, no direction and no meaning. All she could do was wait for her "dear parents" to come around and murder each other so that she could finally live her life without having to fear that either one of them would kill her again.
When Klaus returned, the first thing he saw was the curled up figure on the rug in the front hall. Had she seriously fallen asleep on the ground?
For a moment, he just stood there and looked at her. He'd never really noticed how fragile looking she was. These witches were all the same- they looked as breakable as glass and yet they had the power to send a hundred vampires to their knees wailing in pain.
He walked forward and scooped her up in his arms. She mumbled something in her sleep and her arms tightened around her neck.
"It's alright, love, it's alright," he murmured softly and her head settled onto his shoulder as he carried her to her room.
Author's Note: Don't you think Klaus's love interests on both TV series are really inconsistent? I mean, first there was Caroline- and he really seemed into her. But then there was the one shot with Hayley and that led to her pregnancy and now there's Cami in 'The Originals' who he seems to like just as much as Caroline- more even. Has he forgotten about Caroline? AArgggh! So confusing! No wonder the poor man's a homicidal maniac! So I'll make the story my way and give him one! Yaayy!
P.S. how do you all feel about smut in the next chapter? Wait- why am I even asking? This is an M rated story after all...^_O
