Foolish

You are the fool who fell in love
with our former friend,
a boy who is trapped in the past,
unable to accept the harsh reality
that the girl to whom you grew attached
is no longer alive and breathing.

You know better than even me
the extent of your necrophilia
and that it can inevitably end your life,
yet you refuse not to pursue
this drowned girl from our childhood,
as if she were still with us ten years later.

Yet, despite being fully aware
of the futility of your efforts,
you dress in those cotton clothes
and chase after our shared memories
in hopes of finding a nonexistent sign
that she might ever return to us.

We are both victims of unrequited
love, but while fulfilling yours is out
of the question, mine is an option
if you would only avert your gaze
from the ghost of that girl to the woman
who stands forever by your side.

Yet, like her life and existence,
you remain trapped in that summer,
and even I, your only remaining friend,
cannot restore your irreparable
self to its state of ten years ago,
no matter how hard I try.

So I remove the St. Bernard's lily
from my hair and cut the strands
as short as the flowers in her casket,
despite knowing with full certainty
that I could not possibly fall in love
again as deeply as I did with you.

You are the fool who fell in love
with our former friend,
but I am a far more pitiful fool
for loving you and believing
that maybe, just maybe, someday,
you would feel the same for me.

Author's Notes: I have so many feels for Tsuruko. ;-; She's my favorite character from AnoHana, and I wish she would get together with Yukiatsu. Oh, uhm, this was another college assignment, again for creative writing class. We were asked to write a letter poem, so I wrote about Tsuruko's feelings on Yukiatsu. Well, this is my take on their relationship, anyways. XD; Thank you for reading this far, and please review if you have any thoughts on this poem! Constructive criticism is always appreciated!
