"Take my hand!"

I watched in horror as my brother was parted from me by the mountains themselves. I could not breathe. There was no time to react or think, as the mountain giant we were on stood and swung at the next mountain giant. Our leg hurtled towards another mountain and I heard Thorin yell for us to jump, so I did. Grasping at the wet rock around me, I turned to see the other half of our company—and my brother—desperately trying to hold on as the mountain giants fought. Their giant lost, and came hurtling towards the cliff we were clinging to. I heard Thorin call out again—my name or Fili's, I couldn't tell which, but then the giant smashed into our cliff and the bottom dropped out of my world as I watched it fall into the canyon below. How could he survive this? My brother…

"it's all right, they're alive," I heard Gloin call. Alive? The ledge we were on was too narrow, and I at the end of the line. It wasn't until we entered the cave that I was able to reach my brother. I grasped his shoulder. "Fili," was all I could say. He turned and then we clung to each other in relief.

"I thought you were…" I started

"I know," he stopped me. Then he held me away from him, forcing me to look him in the eyes. "I'm all right. And so are you." His arms wrapped around me as they had so many times before, my big brother taking care of me once again.

"Fili, Kili, get some sleep." Thorin placed a hand on each of us, gently separating us. I covered his hand with mine, no words to express the feelings in my heart. He squeezed my arm, letting me know his own relief that we were both all right, that he hadn't lost us. Fili gathered us both to him, always the one more mindful of when hugs were necessary. He smiled as Thorin gruffly pushed us away, and I grinned back at him.

"Here," Fili said, "we can sleep here." He spread out his blanket, I spread mine next to his, and we lay side by side, as we always had.
