Lead Me to Hell
Chapter 8
My dad is not dead like I thought.
He is not human, nor is he a demon.
My dad is a Greek god.
Not just any one, but the god of eternal time.
And I am a demi-goddess.
A half-blood.
It was a lot to take in and part of her was still taking it all in. After she'd awakened from her impromptu faint, Hades had left her in a large library with an ancient-looking book; it's spine thicker than her arms and pages made from papyrus. Even though the pages should have looked worn or aged, they looked as if they'd been freshly done. 'Or frozen in time.' Despite the book being in Greek, something she'd been ready to tell Hades she could not understand the words on the pages magically rearranged themselves and she could read them as if it were her mother tongue.
The death god rolled his eyes stating all half-bloods could, like she should know that.
"Are you positive," she was skeptical and a little afraid.
Being a reincarnated priestess that could travel back in time and guardian of a powerful artifact was already a lot to take in, but now to find out she was a half god—err goddess was a little too much.
"You should know that you are his daughter, if you can magically read Greek, as it is the book you hold can only be read by Aion or one of his descendants. Not that he has any—at not until now," he said wryly.
Turning on his heel he left her to read, one of the hell hounds circlings around before curling by her feet as she read the first passage.
It was written by a satyr named Adir in the 3rd century. It was clear this satyr held Aion in high regard as it was reflected in his tone and words.
Her brows furrowed together as she read over the next passage.
"He moveth with the lightess of steps, no sound from his unclothed form. Each one is unequivocally precise and assured in it'ascension and fall to the ground beneath him. When first following him it was with the confident belief that he simply wandered aimlessly. A wandering god. Now it doth not seem so. There is a purpose to his walk, yet knoweth not of that purpose do I. As Helios carried the light of a new day and Selene brang the long shade of the night, his steps did I count.
I found they too, were measured. Always was he consistent. Always moving, speaking, and eating in a constant cycle around a mountain that may have been the goddess Cybele, herself. Yet some invisible force kept him from nearing her."
Adir went on to speak about his first conversation with her supposed father. The profound and prophetic knowledge he blessed the satyr with by explaining the stars to him, explaining their purpose. It was then that Adir fell asleep and awoke far from the mountain and never saw Aion again. A lot was hard to understand by his manner of speech as she tried to decipher what she was reading.
Apparently daddy dearest was a nudist god, who walked in cricles around a damn mountain that may or may not have been a goddess. And mapped the stars.
'What the heck is this crap?'
If Hades was trying to provide answers, he wasn't. Istead she was confused even more. Irritation was filtering in as she flipped to the next section of the book. This part was by a unnamed priestess who served the earth-mountain goddess, Cybele, during the later half of the 3rd century. Her section proved much more informative than the satyr's if a tad weird.
And considering the things she'd witnessed in the feudal era that was saying a lot.
"I knew not who he was when I first met him. The voice of Lady Cybele came unto my dreams and prompted my feet in his direction upon my waking. From the temple of my benevolent goddess did I descend down to the lower base of the mountain. It was there that I saw him. He was still, he eyes watching drawing my eyes towards where his eyes lay.
There was a serpent crawling towards a small rodent, as it struck forward with quick movements it ate the mouse whole. While the snake lay enjoying its fresh meal a mighty bird descended snatching the snake from the ground in its sharp talon, as it made to fly into the trees a sleek feline lept through air gnashing straight through the bird and the snake. It was then an arrow struck the feline's flank and it bled to its death, soon the arts swarmed and devoured the corpse and what was left returned to the earth. Soon enough it began again."
The priestess' words reminded her of the teaching of Buddha and the cylical nature of life itself. Plants grow, small animals eat the plants, larger animals eat the small ones, and so on till death where the corpses feed the earth once more to start it again.
Many of the accounts she read spoke of similar things, even tales of his journey to the underworld were even spoken of, that convered an expanse of nearly a thousand years before taking a huge time jump. The last one gave her pause.
This one unlike the others was not written on ancient forms of paper or scrolls rather it was plain notebook paper. It was written in Japanese and as she read the date she noted it was only ten months prior to her birth.
December 1981
Hiro would flip his lid if he knew. My friend Daisuke Digo is a god. Nor is that his real name, it's Aion. I never believed he was half-Japanese like he told me when we first met. He's a Greek god—definitely explains his hot bod and his ma—," Kagome blanched at reading that. 'I do not want to know about that part of my father at all.'
Rubbing her eyes as if it could delete the mental picture her mother's words had created. She was positive it was her mother's words. Hiro was her grandfather's name. Obviously this was her mother's diary from when she was teen, remembering her grandfather talk about how rebellious her mother was when she was their age calling him by his first name.
But even if these were her mother's diary entries, 'How they ended up in this book makes no sense, unless anything written about my father ends up in this book.'
Her brows rose nearly to meet her hairline as she read over the next passage, only to read it over again in disbelief.
January 1982
"Aion took me to Mount Fuji today. He asked a favor of me. He wants me to give birth to his child. Her mother cannot carry it because of a curse, thus he needs someone to do it for her. I told him I couldn't because Hiro is sure to kick me out—not to mention the shame it would bring our family, but he said he'd marry me if that was what held me back. And what sane girl turns down carrying a handsome god's child.
I thought about the mother, even asked him if she'd be okay with him marry me. He simply stared at Mount Fuji, before flashing me that sexy smile saying she had given her blessing. So guess I'm gonna have a baby soon."
She flipped through the next couple of pages that prattled on about the downs and ups of being pregnant till she came to an entry dated a few days after her birth.
Sept 29th 1982
I had a little girl. I saw a starlight shinning from her chest and thought Kagome a beautiful name. Aion liked it although he insisted she have my maiden name. Hiro almost died when he found out, hee hee. Thus we named her Kagome Digo-Higurashi.
The book slipped from her hands, startling the hellhound who snarled at the heavy book hitting him.
She patted him as a way of apology before picking up the book and placing it on the end table. 'It's all good Kagome. So your mom isn't your real mother, she's the one who raised you and that's all that matters.
She sat back down on the couch, pulling the book back into her lap and continued reading going to the last entry in the book.
May 16th 1987
It's been a while since I wrote in here diary. Kagome has gotten so big, nature seems to come alive around her and animals from the forest always seem to flock to her. A wolf even approached her the other day and I almost had a heart attack. Aion had to calm me down explaining it was merely her mother's power awakening in her.
This hurts my heart. In the past four years we've raised her I'd almost forgotten that while I may have given birth to her she is not my child. She is a goddess, daughter of Aion and Cybele, the mountain earth goddess.
Aion gave me some heartbreaking news the other day. Kagome will have to leave me to return to her mother. That she has an great destiny in store for her and she must prepare for that day. A part of me wishes to keep her. To walk her to her first day of school, to see her graduate, get married, and give me grandkids one day. But I know her real mother must wish the same things too. It hurts to know that will not come to pass," there were tear-stains on the page. Her mother must have been crying as she wrote this, just like the rest of the book everything was preserved. Her tear stains were still damp as she caressed them. "I shouldn't feel so distraught what else should I have expected. That they both would stay. For I have come to love Aion just as much as our daughter. Aion knows my pain and has agreed to give me a child, one whom I may keep and watch grow up, but Kagome is my first born and she will never be replaced."
Tears prickled at the edges of Kagome's eyes.
'Oh mom.'
Hades took that moment to return, one brown elegantly raised as he pondered the girl who was looking like her world was completely shattered.
"Woman what is wrong now?"
He glanced at the worn book that had been in his possession for many centuries. Aion had left it with him the last time he'd visited the underworld. None of the Olympic Gods had heard from him in a long time, although many believed he was simply wandering the Earth living like a wastrel chasing after that woman.
Smirking as he thought about how Zeus would react to Aion's having a child. When the mandate had been passed out none had a way of contacting the wandering god, not that anyone expected him to fornicate with a human. Everyone knew of the curse placed on him by his brother Chronos, who was jealous of his brother's power and fame. Aion would forever wander the earth chasing after Cybele, his one and only weakness in the world, who would always be forced to run from him for all eternity.
Seeing as the woman had not answered him, he rolled his eyes. "Half-blood I will not—"
"Will you shut up!" She yelled, but immediately regretted it when she saw a flame light in the death god's eyes. "S-sorry," she stuttered out, not wanting to die. 'Can a goddess even die?'
"I found out what I needed to and you should know I'm not a half-blood. According to this I'm a full-fledged goddess. Daughter of Aion and Cybele," she whispered the last part, as saying it out loud seemed to cement that knowledge.
Hades jaw actually dropped.
