Stolen Smiles

Angus was bored.

Kat and Hale were fighting again while he and the others looked on with interest, although he knew that his brother was faking to be asleep, Gabrielle was fake reading a magazine on her phone, and that Simon was fake writing another paper for his college class. Nick however, made no attempt to hide his interest.

He was looking back and forth like he was watching an air hockey match.

Angus felt sorry for the boy. He was the outsider, and while many didn't trust him, he did feel pity.

Nick and his mother had been a team for so long that all Nick wanted to do with help her, but ended up hurting her and everyone else.

He was glad that the boy was back on the team.

Everyone thought that Nick had feelings for Kat, but it was obvious that he saw her as a sibling.

Angus yawned and stretched.

"Going for a walk."

No one paid him any attention.

He sighed and decided to walk in the park.

He enjoyed seeing everyone, it was such a busy place. Everyone was hurrying around distracted, it was perfect for pick pocketing, but that was more Nick's domain than his.

He thought about the younger boy. Nick and his mother Amelia had moved back to America. Nick had revealed that he was two when they moved to Paris. Nick admitted that he has no idea why they moved back.

However, if there was one thing that Angus loved, was a good mystery.

Nick mentioned that his mother went jogging every evening and morning.

Angus decided to follow her, just out of boredom and curiosity.

So here he was, walking in Central Park, looking for Amelia Bennett.

He spotted her under a tree. Her long brown hair was pulled into a ponytail and she was wearing a purple sports bar and black running shorts that were tight around her body. Her headphones were around her neck and she looked annoyed.

Then she smiled a sweet coy smile and took off running and Angus watched as a familiar looking man ran after her.

He followed them and ducked behind tree and people to avoid being seen.

He felt like a spy.

He couldn't help but wonder if that was how his cousin Grant felt.

He followed them till they reached the duck pond and he watched as the man tackled Amelia by grabbing her waist. He watched them tumble down to the ground and heard her laugh and the deep chuckle from the man.

"Lia."

It was gentle and sweet, full of love. The way Hale said Kat's name.

Angus watched in shock as the man leaned down kissed her.

When the man pulled away, Amelia pushed herself up.

Angus couldn't hear what they said but he could tell they were arguing a bit. Then Amelia got up and walked away. Angus didn't follow her, he wanted to know who the man was.

He was in shocked when the man turned around.

He knew this man.

Saw him often. Worked with and for him. Worked with his daughter.

The man who was tenderly kissing Amelia Bennett, a police officer, was none other than Bobby Bishop, an infamous thief.

Angus couldn't grasp it. He wasn't sure what was harder to grasp- the fact that they should have been enemies or the fact that their children knew each other very well and cared for each other.

He needed some help, and who else to go to but then to three of his teammates.

He cornered his Simon in the hallway and convinced him to come to his room, stating there was to be a small, No Kat and No Hale, meeting.

Hamish was easy, as they did share the room.

Gabrielle was harder but he managed to bribe her with the offer of carrying her bags the next time they went shopping with no complaints.

So they all met up in his room and he told them what he saw.

There were many emotions in the room.

Shock, wonder, curiosity, and interest to meddle.

Simon was shocked and began researching famous thief and police officer relationships.

Gabrielle was shocked and wondered how everything happened. She was curious to figure all this out.

Hamish just wanted to meddle.

So it was agreed upon, they would meddle, without Kat, Nick, or Hale knowing.

Kat and Hale were easy to distract, they spent most days arguing and planning.

Nick was the challenge as he got bored and normally tagged around with them.

So they told Nick that they were spying on some and old friend, and made sure to distract him.

They spent weeks observing the two. Dates in crowded places, kissing in secret places. Hand passes, with messages. Secret smiles.

It was obvious, if you knew what to looks for.

Obvious and dangerous.

But they were in love.

Angus knew that look.

It was the look at Simon and Gabrielle threw at each other when they thought that no one was looking.

The look their father and mother had whenever they were near each other.

The look Hale and Kat shot at each other when they were annoyed or angry at the other.

The look their cousin had whenever her fiancee's name was mentioned.

The look of love, no matter the age was strong.

Angus knew that Bobby and Amelia's story wouldn't have a happy ending but he couldn't help but root for them.

He wanted them to make it, to defeat the odds.

He wanted them to prove to him that love conquered all things.

He wanted a reason to believe in love again.

For there was a time, when he was like that.

When he used to sneak out to see her. When he used to grab her hand and kiss her under the cherry tree as the sun set. When they used to smile at each other, secret sad smiles.

But in the end, his feelings didn't matter. She was the mark. Her family pearls to be exact.

He would never forget the look of her face when she caught him.

Everyone looked at them in shock and he knew that they knew that his feelings for her were not fake.

He remembered her throwing the pearls at him, with tears streaking her pretty face. He remembered how she stepped back whenever he moved forward.

He remembered the feeling in his chest, that summer when her engagement was announced.

They were 16 when they fell in love.

They were 18, when he lost her and she got married.

He saw the picture of her and her husband, and how happy, in loved they look.

He saw the way she looked at him at her wedding, and he knew that he had lost her forever.

He hoped that Bobby and Amelia would fare better.

Angus was sitting with everyone at dinner, when Nick dropped the bomb.

He turned to Kat and asked her. "What to do you thinkā€¦ Ireland or Greece?"

Kat stared at him blankly and Nick sighed.

"For the honeymoon?"

Hale began asking Kat what was going on and their voices rose and then Nick screamed.

"I mean for our parents."

Everyone shut up.

"O-o-our parents?"

Nick looked at Kat in shock.

"You didn't know. You didn't know that our parents were dating."

Kat shook her head silently.

"They used to be high school sweethearts. Separated when they were in college. They began dating after meeting through us."

Kat sat dumbfounded.

Nick shook is head quietly.

"You didn't know."

"They are getting married?"

"Next summer."

"How long did you know?"

"When Angus and the others began spying on them."

"Did you all know?"

Silence gave her the answer she was looking for.

She turned to Hale.

"Did you know?"

"Kitty-Kat."

Her eyes filled with tears and then was out of the house.

Hale chased after her. He returned later with her swung over his shoulder, both of them soaking wet.

The next morning Kat was gone.

Nick left too, full of guilt, but it was Hale who went and dragged him back home.

Angus and everyone else was quiet.

They heard of Kat's jobs but they kept their distance.

Hale took over and they brought in some new members.

They once saw Kat in London.

They were in the middle of a ball.

She (his old love) was there, with her husband, and little sister. She didn't recognize him, something that made his heart break. Then he heard a gasp from Nick and looked up to see Kat talking to her. They laughed and smiled.

Hale turned and saw her and Angus saw all the emotions on his face.

One of the new members, Shay, took Hale's arm and steered him away.

Simon and Gabrielle staged a fight in which Gabrielle stomped off leaving Simon alone with a look of pain on his face.

Hamish and another new member, Winnie, posed as security and waitress.

He turned to look at the girl on his arm.

"Are you ready, love?"

Minerva looked at him and smiled.

"Of course darling."

They waltz around the room, taking in everything.

Nick and his girlfriend, Amber, were flirting with two guests and getting information off them. A few of the new guy members were dancing and talking to people.

Hamish knew the exact moment that they were in trouble.

She, seemed to be scanning the crowd and then her eyes landed on him and Minerva. He saw the recognition and the anger.

He watched as her husband seeing his wife distracted, pulled her in for a long kiss, making everyone cheer.

Then she dropped the bomb.

"We are expecting twins!"

Everyone began celebrating and drinking and Hamish saw their job become easier.

Then his eyes met Kat's and he saw her looking at something behind him.

He turned to see Hale kissing Shay and then saw Shay's boyfriend came up and throw a punch. The brawl was to draw as many guards as possible and leave the way open.

However he saw the pain in Kat's eyes and it wasn't until Minerva touched his shoulder did he drag his eyes away from her.

"That's her. Katrina."

He nodded.

Then Amber walked past them and began talking with his old love.

He saw Nick and Hamish disappear and Gabrielle grabbed the guard following Hamish and gave him a long kiss that made Simon jealous.

He took a deep breath and then dropped to one nine.

"Min. I have known you for two years and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"

The distractions all worked. The guards were outside with Hale and Alec. Shay was sitting by a table having gathered a group of gossiping ladies and eager men. Amber was standing next to Kat and her and many other rich woman. Gabrielle was flirting with some men and Simon was chatting up the lone female security guard.

Winnie had gathered all the waiters and waitress in one corner. Hamish was busy with Nick returning the pearls he had stolen a long time ago.

Everyone's eyes were on them and no one noticed Nick and Hamish walk back in.

"Yes!"

Minerva threw her arms around him and kissed him and Angus told himself that it was all a con, but that didn't help his heart and he looked at her blonde curls and sweet smile and something in his heart felt funny.

After the con, they all went to Hale's limo to celebrate. They spotted Kat walking and Hale ordered Marcus to stop. Marcus scooped her up and threw her into the limo despite all the yelling and kicking.

The atmosphere was tense.

When they got to the hotel, they all got out.

Hale stuck behind to talk to Kat.

"Kat."

Kat jerked her head to Shay who was kissing her boyfriend.

"Thought she was your girlfriend. She's your type. Long hair, leggy, rich princess."

Hale laughed.

"Shay's anything but rich. She earned all her money herself and she and Alec have together since they were 15."

Kat didn't say anything.

"Besides, I prefer my girls short. Hair, figure, legs, everything but her heart."

"Hale."

Hale couldn't stand it anymore and kissed her hard.

When they pulled away, Kat looked at him and then ran.

Angus didn't say a word when Hale never returned to their suite. No one said a word as Shay and Alec came back at around 3 AM with a drunk Hale.

No one said anything as Hale began kissing girls during missions.

During the summer, they all headed off to Ireland for the wedding.

It was a small and sweet affair.

Nick walked his mother, Amelia down the aisle where Hale as best man stood next to Bobby. Gabrielle was bridesmaid and Simon the ring bearer. Angus and Hamish were the flower boys. The maid of honor was supposed to be Kat but no one knew if she would show.

Everyone smiled as the two exchanged their funny but true vows and Nick couldn't help but wish that Kat was there, she was now his step-sister.

Shay later told everyone that Kat had sat next to her during the wedding.

Kat had snuck in at the last minute and sat next to the dark haired girl who she had seen kissing Hale. She knew there was nothing going on but it didn't stop the pain in her heart.

She tried to ignore Hale and instead focused on her father and Nick's mother.

She had run away because she was hurt that everyone had kept a secret from her. It wasn't because she didn't like Amelia. She was thrilled that her father found happiness again, she just wasn't sure how their relationship would work out.

She hoped that it worked out but she was a thief, so she saw all the scenarios.

However, she was how happy both of them were and it made her smile.

She had planned to leave immediately after the kiss but the girl next to her had grabbed her wrist tightly and the next thing she knew she was being picked up and lifted to where her father was.

She turned to other side and saw the man who had punched Hale on the other side of her.

However, she didn't think about it when her eyes landed on her father and Amelia and Nick.

Her father's eyes widen when he saw her and then she felt the two on her side let her go. Kat stared at her father and then she stumbled into his arms and she felt his hug her tightly.

"Kitty Kat." He whispered and Kat let a few tears out onto her dad's shoulders and she felt him let out a few in her hair.

"Daddy."

Angus smiled at the scene and watched Gabrielle take a few pictures of the two.

"Thank you." Kat smiled at the words her father whispered to her.

Then she pulled away and turned to Amelia.

The two looked at each other and everyone held in their breath. It was Kat who made the first move. She stepped closer to Amelia and held out a hand. Amelia shook it strongly and then to everyone's surprise Kat leaned in to hug her.

"Thank you." This time it was Amelia who was blinking back tears at the two words.

Then Kat turned to Nick and it was Nick who hugged her tightly.

Kat was stunned to see how much taller he has gotten. In the past 6 months he must have grown about 8 inches, making him the same size as Hale.

Kat who had plans to leave quickly and unseen suddenly didn't want to go.

She had fun watching Amelia handcuff her father to the chair so he wouldn't escape and try to get out of dancing.

She laughed as her father broke out of the handcuff and instead handcuffed himself to his new wife.

She watched as Nick and Amber teased each other.

She watched as Simon danced with Gabrielle and as Angus and Hamish danced with Minerva and Winne.

She noticed Hale looking at her the whole night but she ignored him.

Her eyes instead focused on Shay.

She felt jealousy when she had seen the two kiss. Knowing that she had a boyfriend didn't lessen her worries.

However watching them, made it obvious that Shay and her boyfriend were in love.

Shay sat down next to her and handed her a glass of alcohol.

"Something tells me you will need this to talk to him. Liquid courage. He loves you."

She got up and pulled Alec to the floor where they waltzed around, looking like Cinderella and her Prince.

Angus watched her get up and look at Hale and then walk outside. Hale followed a few minutes later.

He followed after that.

"The moon is bright."

"Do you want to dance?"

Angus watches as Hale led Kat around as they danced around, he smiled.

Katrina Bishop was one hell of a thief. She didn't steal Hale's Monet but she stole his heart and smile. Now she was giving them back.

Amelia Bennett was one hell of a thief too. She had stolen Bobby's heart. Stealing hearts were the toughest things to steal in the world of thieves.
