"Morning guys...", William greeted as he stepped into the living room, where Anne, Ulrich, Yumi, Patrick, Kenny, Christa, Omid, Carlos, and Luke were sitting in.
"Hey," Kenny said.
"Where's Lee and Carley?"
"They're spending a little, uh... 'quality time' together," Anne said, making quotation marks with her fingers.
"Ooohhhh," William drawled out with a blush.
"I knew they'd hook up sooner or later," Rugby said as he walked by them throwing his coat on. "Hold on, where are you going?", asked Christa.
"I'm just going out to see if there's any supplies nearby," he answered.
"You're not going out there alone," Aelita said as she stood up. "I'm coming too," Anne said as she slipped her jacket on.
"Guys, you be careful, and don't go too far," said Kenny. "If anything happens, just give us a shout and we'll come running."
The three then made their way towards the door. "Can I come?", asked Clementine.
Rugby froze in his tracks. "Clem, you know how dangerous it can be..."
"I know, but I want to help," she said. "I can take care of myself."
The group was silent for a moment. "Alright, you can go with them," Kenny sighed. "But bundle up and stick close to them."
The girl nodded and slipped her coat and gloves on. "You got your gun?", asked Anne. Clementine nodded. "Good, let's go," Rugby said as the four stepped outside.
Patrick sighed. "Lee is NOT gonna be happy with this... "
The quartet walked through the knee deep snow, or in Clementine's case, marched.
Anne glanced over her shoulder and rose an eyebrow. "You OK back there, Clem?", she asked.
Clementine nodded. "Yeah, I'm good," she said. "Hey Anne? What did you mean when you said that Lee and Carley were spending quality time together?"
Rugby, Aelita, and Anne froze, their faces turning beet red.
"Uh...", Aelita began nervously.
"They were just hanging out," Rugby said quickly. Clementine shrugged. "OK," she said before walking past them. The trio let out a sigh of relief.
"Nice save. I seriously need to be careful about what I say around her," Anne muttered as the three caught up to Clementine.
"So, um...", Aelita said, hoping to start a conversation. Anne suddenly froze. "What is it?", the rosette asked.
"There he is...", Anne growled. Aelita quirked an eyebrow before she looked in repent of them and saw a cat, the same one that had attacked Anne the night before. "That's the little monster that clawed my face off!" The cat hissed at this.
Aelita frowned as she noticed the gleam in her visible eye. "Anne, you are NOT fighting a cat in the woods in the middle of winter," she scolded.
"Aw come on, I just wanna get back at him," Anne said as she stepped forward. Rugby grabbed her by the collar of her jacket.
"No."
"Just a little bit? I want some payback!"
"Uh-uh."
In the end, it took Rugby, Aelita, and even Clementine to drag Anne away from the cat. Anne grumbled and shoved her hands into her pockets. "OK, so what should we look for?", she asked.
"Any food or medical supplies that could be useful," said Rugby. "Well, I think we should head back to the cabin. Haven't found anything so far," said Aelita. Anne looked up at a tree and got an idea.
"Hmm... give me a minute," she told them before she started to climb up the tree.
"... OK, I think she's lost it," Rugby commented. Anne responded by chucking a pine cone at his head. She then narrowed her visible eye and scanned the area.
"Nothing... nothing... nothing... nothing... a camp... nothing... no-"
Anne then realized what she had said and nearly fell off the tree branch in surprise. "Huh?!", she asked as she regained her balance and looked into the distance. Just about thirty feet from their position was a camp. By the looks of it, the camp had been long abandoned.
"HOLY CRAP!", she exclaimed.
"What? What is it?", Rugby asked. Anne climbed down the tree with a wide grin on her face. "I think we hit the freaking jackpot! This way!", she said as she took off towards the camp with Rugby, Aelita, and Clementine following close behind.
"Wait up!", Aelita called as they chased after her. Several moments later, they screeched to a halt and gaped at the scene. The camp looked like a tornado had torn through it. There was debris scattered everywhere. An old van with shattered windows was parked next to a tattered tent.
"Ah, geez...", Rugby muttered. "Well guys, we better start looking."
The group nodded in agreement as they walked away in different directions. Aelita headed towards the tent. She knelt down and examined it. "Think somebody's been sleeping in here?", she asked. "Mm, can't tell," Rugby said with a shrug. He then walked over to a box, knelt down, and pulled out a doll. "Well, we definitely can't eat this," he said as he put it back.
Anne wandered over to the van and took a look inside. She picked up a photo, showing a picture of a man, a woman, a child, and a dog. "Looks like these guys were a happy family...", she muttered. She shot a look of sympathy at Clementine before she put the picture down.
Nearby, Clementine walked over to a grill. She peeked into it, only to find a hole at the bottom of it. "Nothing here...", she sighed. Just then, she heard a rustling coming from the bushes. "Who's there?", she asked cautiously.
Much to her surprise, a dog stepped out of the bushes. She gasped. "It's a dog!", she exclaimed, gaining the others' attention. "No way!", Anne said as they walked over to her. The dog wagged it's tail and barked. "Hi there, boy," Clementine greeted as she checked the collar. "It says his name is Sam," she informed them. "Hey Sam, where are your owners?", Rugby asked kneeling down.
The dog simply walked away and started sniffing around. "OK... y'all find anything yet?", he asked. "Nope," Anne answered. "There's one place we haven't checked yet...", Aelita said as her eyes wandered over to a trashcan. "Well, we gotta check everywhere," she muttered as she walked over to it. The rosette grimaced as she dug around the contents. She then pulled out a can filled with beans. "Alright!", she said with a smile before she turned around and waved it to the group.
"What'd you find?", asked Anne. "Some beans, that's all," Aelita said. Just then, Sam began barking and growling at something. "Hey, what is it, boy?", Clementine asked as they walked over to him, but froze when they saw what he was barking at. It was a walker tied up to a tree with a knife stuck into his arm.
"Looks like the poor guy tried to cut the bite out," Rugby muttered. "That knife looks useful," he said. His eyes wandered over to a tree branch on the ground. With a sigh, he picked it up. "You might wanna stand back," he warned as he raised the branch high. He then brought it down on the walker's head. The walker groaned and reached at him. Rugby growled and brought it down harder. The walker moaned weakly before Rugby whacked it two more times and it fell limp. He gagged at the smell and yanked the knife out of the arm before wiping it on his jeans.
"Ah man... this is still pretty sharp," he commented. He then turned to the group. "Here Clem, you're gonna need this later. Just be careful with it, OK?", he asked as he handed it to her. The girl hesitated a moment before she nodded. "OK," she said as she took it and placed it in her pocket. He then looked at Sam, who stared up at him with big, sad eyes. The teen gave him a look of sympathy. "Sorry boy, it had to be done...", he muttered. Sam whined and looked down.
"Alright, I guess that's all this place has. Let's go back," Rugby said standing up. They began to walk away from the camp, but Sam started following them. Aelita looked over her shoulder and rose an eyebrow. "Why are you following us?", she asked as she stopped and turned around, as well as the others. The dog barked and pawed at her leg. "I think he wants to come with us," Clementine said.
"What? We can't! What would Lilly or Kenny say?", asked Rugby.
"Come on, Rugby. Do you really want to leave a poor dog like him out here where he could get eaten easily?", Anne asked as she scratched the dog behind the ears.
"Well..."
"Pleeeaaassse...?", the two girls asked as they, as well as Aelita, gave him the puppy eyes. Rugby sighed. "Alright..."
Sam yipped and wagged his tail. "OK, Sam, time to go back," Aelita said to the new member of the group as they turned around and headed back towards the cabin.
"You let her do WHAT?!", Lee asked as he and Carley faced Kenny, Luke, and Lilly. Kenny scratched the back of his head nervously.
"She said she really wanted to help," he said.
"Besides, Anne, Rugby, and Aelita are with her," Lilly brought up.
"Still, it's the middle of winter and there are walkers everywhere! Who knows what could happen to them?!", Carley snapped.
"We're back."
They whipped around to find the four walking in along with a dog. "Clementine, are you alright?", Lee asked as he knelt down to the girl's level.
"Yeah," she said with a nod. "This is all we've found when we were out there," Rugby said as he set the can of beans down on the table. Luke looked over his shoulder and noticed Sam. "Holy sh**! Is that a dog?!", he asked with a smile.
"Yeah, we found him at this abandoned camp. We found one of his owners as a walker, but we don't know what happened to the others," Anne said.
"Why'd you bring him here?", asked Lilly.
Rugby shot her a look. "Well, he couldn't just leave him there!"
"Are you crazy?! We can't keep a dog!", Lilly snapped.
"Seriously Lilly, how many dogs do you see today? Not a lot!", Rugby retorted.
"Alright, settle down you guys," Lee said as he took a step forward. "Rugby's right. This dog is a survivor. He's lucky enough that no walkers got to him."
"Having a dog with us means that we'll have to feed him too!", Lilly said.
"Just give him a chance, Lilly," Carley sighed. "Besides, how can you say 'No' to a face like that?"
Lilly looked down at Sam, who stared up at her intently with his big, brown eyes. Her frown faltered for a split second.
"Fine...", she muttered in defeat. Kenny then knelt down and scratched Sam behind the ears. "Duck always loved dogs..."
Everyone froze at the mention of Duck's name. Luke blinked in confusion. "Who's Duck?", he asked.
The atmosphere grew thick as everyone turned to Kenny. "He was my son..."
"Oh..."
Luke cleared his throat. "Um, sorry if I brought up a touchy subject...", he said as he left the room. Anne adjusted her hat and edged towards the door. "I'll be in the living room if y'all need me. Come on, guys," she said as she stepped out of the kitchen with Clem, Rugby, and Aelita in tow.
Things were actually quiet the next day. The kids spent their time playing with Sam, who was enjoying the attention. Anne, Pete and Nick had gone out to catch some fish. When they didn't return after several hours, the adults headed out to find them. As for the rest of the teens, they sat in the living room with the kids.
"I'm bored...", Becca sighed.
Billy was on the floor, giggling as he hid his head in his arms while Sam tried to lick his face.
"Hey, look what I've found!", Sarah said as she stepped into the room holding a camera. "Say cheese!", she said as she snapped a picture of Aelita. "You wanna take a picture of me?", she asked. Aelita smiled and complied. After she took the picture, it slid out, showing Sarah smiling.
"Huh, you don't see cameras like that anymore," Patrick remarked.
Sarah's smile fell. "Where's my dad?"
The group of teens were silent. "Guys? What's wrong?", Sarah asked. "You're scaring me."
"He'll be fine," Ulrich said. Sarah was silent for a moment before she began to sniffle. "S-sorry... I just need to...", she trailed off as she sat down and pulled her legs up to her chest. Odd knelt down to her height and gave her a reassuring smile. Sarah smiled back. "You wanna see what I found, Odd?", she asked.
Odd shrugged. "Sure," he said as he followed Sarah up to her room. Once the two reached their destination, Sarah reached under her bed and pulled out a Glock 17, much to Odd's surprise.
"I was wondering if you could show me how to use it. I couldn't find any bullets. I hold know how to protect myself," the girl said. Odd sighed. "Carlos is so gonna kill me for this...", he thought. "OK, but remember, this is not a toy," the blonde said. "First, you gotta remember, it's just a thing."
"I know," Sarah said with a nod. "OK, what do I do?"
Odd gently took Sarah's arms and had her hold them out in front of her. "First of all, don't lock your elbows. The most important thing is to always aim for the head," he explained. "Got it, but what if it's a person?", she asked. "Then you just keep shooting," Odd said. Sarah held the gun in front of her and turned around. "What should I shoot?", she asked, accidentally aiming the empty gun at Odd's head.
"GAH! Not the face!", Odd exclaimed as he ducked down. Sarah gasped. "S-sorry! Sorry...", she said nervously. "It's OK, but next time, be careful where ya aim that thing, alright?", he sighed. "OK...", Sarah said with a nod. "Come on, let's get back downstairs," Odd said as he stepped out of the room with Sarah in tow. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, Odd gave a wave. "Hey guys, sorry we took so-"
The next thing they heard nearly made everybody's heart stop. Someone was knocking at the front door loudly. Sam immediately stopped playing with Billy and began to growl. "Sam, quiet!", Rugby hissed. The knocking grew louder.
"Sarah...", Ulrich said slowly. "You guys weren't expecting anyone, were you?"
The girl shook her head. "No," she answered. Jeremy immediately hopped up.
"Hide! Hide!", Jeremy whispered. "Where?!", asked Jamie. "Upstairs, now go!", he ordered as he ushered them up the stairs. "Sh**, we'll make too much noise!", Rugby hissed. "Who's gonna answer it?", Tim asked nervously. Yumi stepped forward. "I will. Tim, Rugby, Becca, and Jeremy, get upstairs with the kids and make sure they stay quiet. The rest of you, hide outside and stay out of this guy's sight!", she ordered.
Once everyone was out of her sight, Yumi turned around and edged towards the front door. As she got closer, she could see the outline of a man in the window. She reached to lock the door, but the man opened it before she could.
"Hello there," he greeted. Yumi's face remained neutral, but inside, she was freaking out.
"Um... hi," she said slowly.
"How are ya?"
"OK, how about you?"
"I'm doing just fine, thank you. My family and I are set up a ways down river. I'm kinda surprised we haven't run into each other yet. What's your name?"
"OK, this guy officially creeps me out," she thought. "...Yumi."
"Huh, by the sound of your name, you must be Chinese, right?"
Yumi frowned. "I'm Japanese," she deadpanned.
"Sorry," the man apologized as he stepped in. "Mind if I come in? It's freezing out here."
"Would you please leave?", she asked as the man began to wander around the cabin. "This is a nice place. Is there anyone else around here?", he asked.
"I'm alone," she said with a straight face.
"Really?", asked the mysterious man. "Yeah," Yumi said with a nod.
"Anyway, I'll cut to the chase; I'm out looking for my people. Seven of them to be exact. They've been gone a long while and... I'm worried that they've might have gotten lost. Maybe you've seen them. Couple of farm boys and an old man... Spanish guy and his daughter. Quiet girl, a few inches shorter than you. A big black guy, this big... And a pretty little pregnant lady."
Yumi's fingers twitched ever so slightly. "That's a lot of people to lose," she commented. "Tell me about it. This whole d**n thing is a pain in the a**."
He then wandered into the kitchen and his gaze fell on the sink. "That's a lotta dishes for one person. Looks like a hurricane came through here," he remarked.
Yumi reacted quickly. "I don't do the dishes," she said as she casually leaned against the counter.
"Well, I don't either. Just passing through or have you been here for a while?", asked the man.
"Just passing through. I'm looking for my friend," she said quickly. "Got separated from him during a walker attack."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
He then noticed Yumi eyeing a knife on the counter. The man reached for it and faced the teen with the knife in his hand. "Where does this go?", he asked.
"In that drawer over there," Yumi answered immediately. The man placed the knife in the drawer before he wandered to the window. "Hm, one of those cars yours?", asked the man. "Uh, yeah. The pickup's mine," Yumi said. The man nodded before he walked out of the kitchen and into the living room.
"Well, this is a real nice place. Kinda cozy," he commented as his gaze fell on a red flannel shirt lying on the couch. "I knew a guy who wore shirts just like this," the man said. "I knew someone who always wore shirts like these too. I also got separated from her...", said Yumi. "So what's this guy's name?"
"Carlos."
"Sh**..."
The man took a step forward, but his gaze lowered and noticed something on the ground. He picked it up and showed it to Yumi. It was the picture of Sarah.
"Who's this?"
Yumi's mind went into turmoil as she tried to come up with an answer. "Must be someone who lived here...", she said with a shrug. The man stared at Yumi intently as she crossed her arms. "You have no idea who these people are, do you?", asked the man. "I don't know what you're talking about," Yumi said without missing a beat. "Lemme ask you this... when you met them, how much did they trust you?", he asked. "What's your point?", asked the teen.
"If people don't trust you, how can you trust them?"
Yumi remained silent as she narrowed her eyes. "Well, I think I've troubled you long enough. I can let myself out," he said as he turned around and headed towards the front door. "Wait! Who are you?", Yumi called. The man stopped and looked over his shoulder. "You have a nice day, kid," he said before he left the cabin. Yumi walked up to the window and watched him trudge away into the woods. Once he was out of her sight, Yumi ran upstairs and into Sarah's room. When she didn't see anything, she sighed and walked over to a closet. She then yanked it open and jumped to the side as Becca, Clementine, Jamie, Billy, and Jeremy tumbled out of it.
"OW!"
Jeremy scrambled to his feet and dusted himself off. "Is he gone?", he asked.
"Yeah."
Rugby, Sam, Tim, and Sarah came out of their hiding spots. "What if he come's back?", asked Sarah.
Yumi remained silent.
The group all sat in the living room in silence. Clementine then stood up. "We need to find the others," she said. Jeremy was surprised that she was the one who said it, but nodded in agreement. They entered the kitchen just in time to see Luke and the other adults step into the room.
"Sarah!", Carlos exclaimed in relief as Sarah ran up to hug him.
"Did you find Anne, Nick, or Pete?", asked William.
Luke shook his head. "We checked the river, but all we found were walkers."
"And you didn't even bother to keep checking the area around the river?!", Tim asked.
"Calm down...", Ulrich said as he placed a hand on his shoulder. "Calm down?! Our sister is out there somewhere possibly in danger! How the f**k do you expect us to calm down?!", Rubgy snapped.
"A man was here...", Sarah said. The cabin survivor's eyes widened.
"What did she say?!", Rebecca asked.
Sarah looked down. "Someone came to the cabin. Yumi talked to him..."
"And you just opened up the door for him?!", Rebecca asked. "Hey, I didn't open the door! He just walked right in," Yumi retorted.
"She's telling the truth!", Sarah agreed. "Did he say his name? Did he say what his name was?", Carlos asked.
"Maybe it wasn't him," said Rebecca.
"You know d**n well who it was," Alvin told his wife.
"He didn't say," Yumi answered. "How could you not ask his name?!", Rebecca asked. "The guy had a gun! I didn't wanna make him angry!", Yumi said.
"Look, Yumi... just tell us what he looked like. What was he wearing?", asked Carlos.
"He was wearing a brown coat," Yumi said as she looked up, remembering the man's appearance. "Did it have a lining? A collar?", asked Carlos with a worried expression. "Yeah. Fur...", Yumi said with a nod.
"He talked about you, dad," said Sarah. "You're not gonna hurt anyone, are you?"
"Of course he won't, Sarah. Your dad is the nicest man I know, which is why he's not gonna do anything crazy, or... not nice, right?", said Luke.
Carlos placed a hand on his daughter's shoulder. "You know these are bad people, sweetie. They will do or say anything to hurt us."
"Alright, what do you think? Did it seem like he was coming back?", asked Luke.
Sarah pulled out the picture of her. "He saw a picture of me."
Carlos's eyes widened. "A picture?! What were you doing taking pictures?!"
Aelita stepped up. "I took the picture. It's my fault," she said. "No, I asked her to. It's my fault," Sarah said, coming to Aelita's defense.
"Sarah...?"
Carlos then sighed. "He was scouting. We got lucky. He wasn't expecting to find us. Yumi must have surprised him. If she and her friends weren't here...", he trailed off. "Well, he was too smart to stick around. But he'll be back with the rest. We don't have much time."
Luke nodded. "He's right. Everyone pack up, we're moving out," he said. Patrick groaned and slumped over. "Why is it that something happens at every place we stay at?", he asked himself.
"We have to leave now, sweetie, before he comes back with more bad guys," Carlos said to Sarah.
"Hold on, what does this man want?", asked Shel.
"To bring us back," Carlos answered with a look of fear. "Listen, I don't know what this man did to you guys, but I can tell it was something awful. It'd be best if you just stick with us," said Carley. Lilly then butted in. "Are you serious?! If they come with us, that's about...", Lilly paused to count the group members in her head. "That's about thirty people in this group! How are we gonna travel with this many people?! How are we gonna split the supplies?!"
"We'll figure out a way," said Lee. "We always do."
"Well, I'm not going anywhere until we find Anne!", said Rugby as he crossed his arms. "The kid's got a point. Nick and Pete are still out there too. Alright guys, pack your things and get them into the vehicles. Let's hit the road," Luke said.
Some time later, they crammed themselves into the cars and drove through the path in the woods.
"Everybody keep an eye out. We might miss something important," Kenny advised.
Rebecca turned to the Lyoko Warriors. "Sorry if I gave you guys some sh** back there. I'm just a little on the edge. It's just a tough time right now with the pregnancy and all..."
"It's OK," said Jeremy. "If it's not you guys I'm yelling at lately, it's Alvin, then I'm in real trouble."
"We can handle it," Ulrich said from his perch on the table. "We're not all little kids, ya know."
"I felt the same way when I was close to your age," Rebecca said with a smile. "My dad was always giving me crap and I always thought he didn't know a d**n thing."
Ulrich let out a chuckle. "My dad's just like that. He's always yellin' about me about my grades, and he says it's cause my friends hold me back," he said as the smile left his face. "Your dad sounds like a jerk," said Becca.
"He is."
Rebecca noticed the look on his face and decided to change the subject. "I know you did your best back there. You know, none of us would make it on our own," she said. "Sometimes it's hard knowing how dependent I am on everyone. I'm not used to that. I'm supposed to be a mom soon. Guess I just need to work on my patience. Alvin and I still don't know what to call her. Or him. Any ideas, guys?"
"Hm... how about...", Odd began, but was cut off when the RV screeched to a halt. "WHAT THE!", Ulrich exclaimed as he slid off the table and landed on the ground.
"What the h**l?!", he snapped as he got up. "Guys, look at that!", Kenny said. "What?", asked Rugby as he stared out the front window. His heart stopped when he saw what was in front of them; Anne's dark blue hat was lying in the snow in the middle of the path.
"Sh**!", he exclaimed as he and Tim darted out of the vehicle. "Guys, hold on!", Luke exclaimed as he, Odd, Carley, Lee, Kenny, Carlos, Clementine, and William followed them. Rugby knelt down and picked the hat up. "D**n it...", he whispered. "D**N IT!"
"She's gotta be near," Tim said. Clementine looked around and gasped. "Look!", she exclaimed as she pointed to something on the side of the path. William knelt down and examined them. "Footprints...", he said.
"They must be that way!", Tim exclaimed as he hopped up. "They could be walker footprints," Carley pointed out. "Do walkers walk in a straight line?", Kenny asked. Carley looked at the footprints closely and gasped. "You're right!"
"Come on!", Rugby exclaimed as he dashed past them. "Rugby, wait!", Odd called as they chased after him. When they caught up with them, Carlos grabbed Rugby and yanked him back as they stared at the scene in front of them. Several feet away from their position was a shed. There were about three walkers surrounding it. Luke pulled his machete out and quickly disposed of two of them. He whipped around and took care of the one sitting in front of the doors and shoved it out of the way. Clementine and the Rugby twins came up to his side.
"Nick, Anne?!", Luke called. When he heard a groan, he turned to Clementine. "Get the door, and be careful."
Clementine cautiously opened the door and peered inside, seeing nothing but a bunch of shelves. She then opened the door a little bit wider to get a better look. The four stepped in and found Nick sprawled out on the floor. The man looked up at them and smiled weakly. "Hey man. You got any aspirin?", he asked, clearly suffering from a headache.
Luke smiled. "Nick, you a**hole," he chuckled as he helped the man up. Nick's smile fell. "Pete's dead..."
"What...?", Tim gasped.
"Back at the river..."
Rugby gave him a look of sympathy before he suddenly remembered something. "Where's Anne? Is she with you?!"
Nick gestured over to a figure behind a shelf. The four walked over to it and found Anne slumped over on the ground next to a crate fast asleep with her arm placed on it, keeping her head propped up.
Rugby smiled in relief. "Typical...", he muttered as he knelt down and gently shook her shoulder. "Anne. Come on, get up."
Anne groaned. "Five more minutes...", she moaned sleepily before her eyes snapped open. "Guys!", she exclaimed as she sat up. Tim grinned. "Hey sleepyhead," he greeted as he and Rugby pulled her into a hug.
"You OK?", Luke asked as he stepped up to the three.
"Yeah," Anne nodded.
"What happened back there?"
Anne's face fell. "It was awful..."
FLASHBACK...
Anne, Nick, and Pete gaped in horror as they stared at the scene in front of them. There were several bodies scattered around the river with blood staining the snow, each with a bullet hole in their head.
"What the h**l?!", Anne asked. Pete walked up to one of the bodies and examined it. "Fulla holes," he observed.
"Who do you think did this?", asked Anne. "Not sure, but it ain't your average gang of thugs, that's for sure," he replied.
"Think about it. You're Carver, what do you do?", asked Nick. Anne rose an eyebrow. "Who's Carver?"
Pete and Nick exchanged a look, but remained silent. "Check those guys over there. Be careful. Some of them might still be moving," Pete said as he and Nick examined more of the bodies. Anne stepped up to one wearing a leather jacket and examined it. "This one's shot too," she said.
"Through the head?"
"Yeah."
"Check the rest, and look for ammo. We're running low," Pete advised. Anne stood up and looked to the other side of the river, seeing more bodies.
"Hey, there's more out there!", she called.
"This was no rinky-dink p***in' match," Pete said.
"What was it, then?", asked Nick.
"FUBAR," Pete said simply as he started to wade through the river. "Where are you going?! We need to get the f**k out of here!", Nick said.
"Gotta check the rest."
"What?! Why?", asked Nick.
"Nick, some of them may still be alive!", Anne pointed out.
"Who cares?!"
"Cause they might be able to tell us who did this. We gotta do this now," said Pete. "Stay here. Keep searching these," he ordered as Anne hopped onto a large rock and jumped to the other side of the river. "This is a dumb idea," Nick stated backing away. "You know, Nick, I don't like this either, but sooner or later, you're gonna realize a simple truth," said Pete.
"What? That you're an a**hole?", Nick retorted. "That nobody in this world is gonna give a sh** whether you like something or not. You gotta grow up, son," Pete said.
"Whatever...", Nick muttered. Pete sighed. "Come on, Anne. Keep a lookout on that tree-line, and check to see if anyone's still alive, alright?"
"You got it," Anne replied. She trudged over to a body near the edge and examined it. Her gaze drifted over to a bag next to the body. She knelt down to grab it, but was startled by a weak cough. The body shifted a little, proving that the man was still alive. "What happened to you?", she asked.
The man continued to cough. "What kind of sicko did this to you?", Anne asked.
"W-water... please...", the man rasped. Anne quickly pulled a water bottle out her bag and poured some water into the man's mouth. "Thank you... thank you...", the man gasped rolling onto his back.
"No problem."
Anne jerked up when she heard Pete cry out in pain. She looked up just in time to see a walker get shot by the old man.
"PETE!", Nick exclaimed. "You OK?!", Anne called.
"I'm fine! Just lost my footing!", Pete said. Anne narrowed her visible eye and saw that there was what looked like a bite on his ankle. Suddenly, walkers started hanging up on Nick.
"Sh**!", he exclaimed as he began firing at them.
"I'm outta ammo!", Pete yelled.
"Come this way!"
"Both of you get your a**es over here!"
Anne looked back and forth between the two. "D**n it. What do I do?!", she thought. She glanced at Nick, who was surrounded by walkers, and Pete being backed up by more walkers.
Anne shut her visible eye tightly before darting towards Nick. She jumped out of the way just as a walker lunged at her. She reached down and pulled her hunting knife out and stabbed a walker in the head as she reached Nick, who had just shot one of the walkers.
"NICK!"
The duo looked up just in time to see Pete get devoured by walkers. Nick gaped in horror as he reloaded his rifle and shot at the walkers. "PETE, NO!", he cried out.
"WE HAVE TO GO!", Anne exclaimed. Nick shot a look at the teen. "You could have saved him! How could you just leave him?!"
Anne froze.
You could have saved him.
You could have saved him...
She was yanked out of her thoughts by the sound of walkers getting closer. "RUN!", she exclaimed as she and a distraught Nick dashed away from the river and into the woods.
Anne shoved branches out of the way as the two darted through the woods. The two ran for several minutes before they came face to face with several more walkers.
"CRAP!", Anne exclaimed as they skidded to a halt. The two jerked to the left and Anne's hat fell off in the process. "In there!", she yelled as she and Nick ran into a nearby shed and slammed the doors behind them. No sooner than they did that, walkers began pounding on the doors as Anne and Nick tried to block them. They managed to open the door momentarily, but Anne and Nick quickly shoved them back.
"Nick, snap out of it! Do something!", Anne exclaimed. Nick, with a distant look, walked away from the door, leaving Anne by herself. "GAH!", she exclaimed as she tried to hold the doors close. Just when it seemed like they were getting in, Nick came back holding a crate and shoved it against the door, barricading it. Anne sighed in relief and leaned against the wall as Nick sat in a chair nearby. Once she recovered, she shot a glare at him. "What the h**l, Nick?! Are you crazy?!"
"Maybe I am...", Nick replied softly. Anne's gaze softened at those words. "Why'd you leave my uncle?", he asked. "Why'd you follow me?"
Anne closed her visble eye. "Pete got bit..."
"What?"
"He got bit. Back at the stream. He wasn't gonna make it. I'm sorry, Nick..."
Nick stared blankly ahead of him as Anne took a quick look around the shed. "What do we do now?", she asked.
"I don't care," Nick replied. Anne whirled around to face him. "Whaddya mean you don't care?! If we're stuck in here, we should take a look around. We might be able to find something to get us outta here," she said.
"Knock yourself out," muttered Nick. Anne shook her head and began to roam around the shed. She noticed a large piece of plywood propped up and moved it to the side, revealing many jars. Nick looked up and noticed the jars.
"What is that stuff? Let me see," he said. Anne brought a jar over to him. He sniffed it before he actually began to drink the substance in it. He noticed the look on Anne's face and said, "Whiskey."
"Ah," she muttered. "So... now what?"
Nick took a large sip. "F**k if I know. We wait, I guess," Nick sighed. Anne remained silent as she sat down, leaning against the crate, and brought one knee up to her chest, slinging her arm over it, staring straight ahead.
It was now dark outside. Anne had fallen fast asleep, still in the same position she was in earlier. She jerked awake by the sound of glass shattering.
"Wha?", she muttered as her vision became clear, seeing Nick slumped over behind a shelf, chucking the jars at the wall. She scrambled to her feet and walked up to him. "Nick, seriously, what's your problem?!"
The man raised another jar over his head and prepared to throw it, but froze. "I had to kill my mom..."
Anne's gaze softened. "Sounds weird when I say it out loud, huh?", he asked. "Luke always used to push me. I never wanted to go into buisness with him. I remember when he sold me on it. His big plan, some big f**king plan. A case of beer and he just said, 'Nick, we're burning day light.' And that was that," Nick said. "After six moths, we were flat broke. But I didn't care. We were having fun."
He took another gulp before he said, "I wish I was like him. I wish I could just keep moving all the time. But I'm just not... built like that." He paused for a moment. "Everyone I grew up with, it all happened to them. And now... it's gonna happen to us."
"We'll make it," Anne said reassuringly.
"Bullsh**," Nick grumbled. "I mean, what's the point? We'll just march to some new place and somebody else will die. It's never gonna stop. And eventually, it'll be our turn. I can't believe we've been here a day... it's been a day, right?"
Anne shrugged in response. "Hey kid, you want a drink?", he asked as he offered the jar to him. "It's gonna be your first, and your last."
"Nah, that's OK. I already got something on me anyway," Anne said as she pulled a can of Pepsi out of her bag and took a seat next to Nick. "So... you miss your parents?", he asked.
Anne froze. "Not really..."
"What?"
"I was bullied when I was younger, all because of this...", she said as she lifted her bangs up, showing Nick her right eye. "Their ideas of stopping it were weak... eventually, they thought it would all stop all together, but they were wrong...", she said, taking a sip of Pepsi. "Their stupid mistake ended with me getting beaten up by the bullies in public in front of a crowd..."
She paused for a moment. "Got fed up with all of it eventually, so my grandpa managed to get me into another school. My parents tried to make me stay, cause they thought I was overreacting. I told them they didn't know a single freakin' thing about what I went through there and left without looking back. I boarded a plane and flew to France, where the school was. That's where I met my brothers, Rugby and Tim, and eventually met Jeremy and the others too..."
Nick had an unreadable expression on his face before he sighed. "Look, kid, you should go, they're not coming for us."
Anne let her bangs fall back over her right eye. "What're you gonna do?"
"Stay here. I'm tired," Nick mumbled.
"We can make it," Anne said standing up. Nick didn't respond. Anne crossed her arms. "You know, I'm not gonna leave without you," she said.
"You kidding? And leave all of this?", Nick asked, gesturing to the whiskey jars. "You can't just sit here and die!", she exclaimed.
"Why not? What does it matter?"
"Listen, you still have Luke, and everyone else in your group. Nick, I need your help. Please."
Nick was silent for a moment. "You're right," he said, shakily getting to his feet. Ya sure you'll be able to walk straight?", Anne asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah."
Anne moved the crate out of the way. "Screw it, let's go," Nick said to himself. The duo opened the door and froze. There were many walkers in front of the cabin, blocking any means of escape. "Sh**...", Nick whispered as they slowly closed the door.
Anne then smiled nervously. "Hehe... so... you got a Plan B?"
END FLASHBACK...
"After that, we ended up stuck in here for the rest of the day, and thanks to Nick drinking too much whiskey, he's got a hangover," Anne finished.
"D**n...", Luke muttered.
Rugby then pulled out Anne's dark blue hat. "Here, found this in the middle of the road," he said. Anne smiled. "My hat! Thanks," she said, taking the hat and placing it back on.
"Listen you two, we need to go," said Luke.
"Why?", asked Nick.
"Carver's gang showed up," Luke said. "He knows that they're with us, and he's gonna be looking for us soon."
"WHAT?!", asked Nick.
"Isn't Carver the guy you thought shot those people at the stream?", asked Anne. "What happened at the stream?", Tim asked. Nick and Anne exchanged a look. "We'll talk about it later," Nick said.
"Can you make it?", asked Luke.
"Yeah..."
"Good, let's go," said Luke as they headed back towards the RV.
"Hey Anne?", asked Nick.
Anne looked over her shoulder. "Hm?"
"I just wanna say thanks for not giving up on me," he said. Anne smiled. "Don't mention it," she said. Nick's smile fell as his pace slowed down. "Poor guy," Tim muttered.
They then reached the RV. "Anne!", Jeremy exclaimed as the rest of the Lyoko Warriors ran up to her. "You OK?", asked Ulrich. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said. "Good, now everybody get back in," said Luke. They piled back into the RV as Vince poked his head out the window. "You ready?", he called.
"Yeah!", Shel called. She then pressed her foot down on the accelerator with Wyatt and Vince's cars following not too far behind, leaving yet again another safe haven.
NEXT TIME ON ATTACK OF THE WALKERS...
"I don't get it, it's been at least a month. Why would Carver still be following us?", asked Odd.
"What's the most important thing in this world? What's the one thing a guy would walk hundreds of miles in this kind of weather for?", Luke questioned.
"Can't shoot 'em, too much noise. But there's only two of them," Luke observed.
"Let's take 'em."
"AHH!", Becca screamed as she fell back. Just as the walker was about to grab her, Anne shot it in the head.
Odd rammed his crossbow into a walker's head.
"Jamie, Billy, RUN!", he exclaimed as he ran up to the two.
"LOOK OUT!", Ulrich called to Clementine as a walker staggered up to her.
The girl gasped as she gripped the hammer tightly in her hand.
The screen goes black and a gunshot is heard.
"NO!"
