Reid strode into the BAU bullpen, stopping just inside the doors to observe all the hustle-bustle of the office. He was still a little unsteady on his feet, but after two weeks he was adjusting back into his life as a human. Gazing around the office, he drew in a big breath, feeling slightly rattled from how different it seemed. It seemed to be much bigger than before, but also more narrow. Besides that, all the colours were just so much brighter; he had to stifle the urge to just cover his eyes from all the sudden, more vibrant, activity. And he couldn't smell anything; except maybe fresh coffee from the break room.
"Hey, Pretty Boy!" called a voice, breaking into Reid's almost overwhelmed thoughts. Turning his head, Reid smiled when he saw Morgan sitting at his desk, waving an arm at him. Emily was leaning on her own desk, grinning over at him.
Smiling gently, he made his way over to his own desk, which had been restored by his team. He slung his messenger bag off his shoulder and set it down next to his desk, plopping down into his chair with a sigh.
"Here ya go, Reid." laughed Morgan, holding out a cup of coffee. Reid's eyes lit up and he grabbed it, taking a quick gulp of the hot liquid. Ever since he had become human again, he couldn't get enough of his precious coffee that he hadn't been able to drink as a dog.
"Thanks Morgan." He grinned. He leaned back in his familiar chair, smiling as he caught sight of the stack of files on his desk. In truth, he couldn't wait to get back to work.
"You settle in ok?" questioned Emily, glad to abandon her own work in favour of chatting.
"Yeah, thanks." smiled Reid, taking another sip of coffee.
After his disappearance, the team had been forced to clean out his apartment, packing all his things and taking them away. Reid remembered that day, because he had been there as Guardian. Halfway through packing his shelves of books, Garcia had burst into tears and had to leave. He still remembered the twisted look on Morgan's face as he had followed Garcia, hoping to comfort her. The rest of the team had had to finish on their own. After, it was Rossi that had taken all his stuff back to his own house, storing them away in one of his spare rooms just in case Reid was ever found.
Last weekend, the team had got all his stuff and had helped Reid unpack into his old apartment again. It had been a very happy day, complete with laughter, lemonade, and fresh cooked brownies courtesy of Garcia.
Speaking of, thought Reid, where was she..? A small scream answered him and he smiled again as he was sudden grabbed from behind in a tight hug.
"Hey Garcia." He laughed, twisting around to return the embrace.
"Hello my junior G-man!" she exclaimed happily, "Look, I made cookies for you!" Reid reached over and took one off the plate she was carrying, giving a noise of pleasure as chocolate chips melted on his tongue.
"Thanks, they're really good." He said, biting off another chunk as she set the plate down on his desk, giving a gleeful clap of her hands.
"Hey, don't I get any?" complained Morgan with a laid-back smirk on his face.
"Nope," declared Garcia, "These are for Reid."
"Awww, come on!" Morgan whined, making Emily burst into laughter. Reid took another cookie then offered the plate to Emily, who grabbed one and bit into it, giving a nod.
"Delicious!" she agreed. At Morgan's look, Reid coughed out a laugh before he offered the plate to him as well.
"By the way, what did Hotch tell Strauss?" asked Emily conversationally. Morgan shrugged his shoulders.
"Hell if I know." He said, stealing another cookie off Reid's desk. Garcia swatted him away with a squawk, glaring at him. The agent raised his eyebrows and made a show of lifting the stolen cookie to his mouth and taking a big bite of it. He choked slightly as he was suddenly whacked in the back of the head by JJ, holding a small stack of files.
"Behave." She scolded gently.
"Hey, JJ, do you know what happened with Strauss?" Emily asked quickly, cutting off Morgan's noise of protest. JJ frowned and shifted the files in her arms, reaching forward to grab her own cookie.
"No clue what Hotch told her, but Rossi was there to back him up and I haven't heard of anything bad happening. I just think she's glad that we got Reid back and that nobody died in the process.
"Reid," said Garcia hesitantly, "Are you sure..? I mean, I could try to track Matthews, if you're worried that is." Reid shook his head.
"I don't think Matthews is dangerous. Also I don't think any of us could possibly track him down."
"I could try." Garcia said confidently. Reid only grinned at her and took another cookie. He opened one of his files, one ear on the conversation around him, and started to write. The soft sounds of his team lightly bickering and laughing made him feel light as air, and he let himself be washed into a feeling of security.
The rest of the day went by fairly fast, with none of the team really getting any work done. Reid was frequently drawn into Morgan and Emily's conversations, and Garcia popped by every hour or so just to hug him and bring them more cookies and coffee. JJ would walk by every so often, going about her work, but would always make a point of going past their desks and checking up on them. More than once, Reid glanced up to see Rossi watching them all from his office, a look of peace on his face. And Hotch, who came down from his office only once to give Reid some files, had stared him dead in the eye and said, "It's good to have you back."
By the end of the day, Reid was tired but very happy. Gathering up his bag and all the left-over cookies scattered across his desk, he stood and made his way with the rest of his team out of the building.
"Hey, Reid; want to come out with us?" asked Morgan, "Get some drinks or something."
"Not tonight, thanks." He replied. He sighed under his breath as he felt his team carefully watching him. He had felt them watching him all day, and knew it would be a while before they all relaxed again and stopped checking to make sure he was still there. On the first night back in his apartment alone, Garcia had phoned him no less than five times; and that didn't even include the rest of the team phoning just to "check he was settled in alright."
Waving a hand at his team, Reid walked away in a way that could only be called graceful, a smile on his face and his hands tucked into his pockets.
That was something everyone on the team had noticed; his steps, once awkward and hesitant, had changed to elegant and swift footwork. Being a dog had obviously improved his balance, even now that he was a human. They also were surprised to see how much more confident he was. He no longer fidgeted nervously near strangers and stumbled over his words, he seemed much more at ease and confident in himself. He also, amazingly, held eye contact, when beforehand he never would have dared to do so, especially with alpha males like Hotch. They also noticed how whenever he smiled, it was more like he was baring fangs. His behaviours, although not all dog-like, seemed to have adopted some of the old dog instincts; such as his protective nature over the team.
This new Reid, not much different from the old Reid, was a pleasant shock to the team; he was finally coming out of his shell.

Reid stepped into his apartment, making sure to firmly shut the door behind him and keyed in the password on his alarm system. He had never had an alarm system before, but Hotch had demanded that he get it and Rossi had winked at him and paid off the bill, even as he weakly protested that he didn't have to do that. He dropped his messenger bag down besides his couch and flopped down, untying the purple scarf around his neck and hanging it on the lamp on the side-table next to him. He closed his eyes and relaxed, sighing with the pleasure of just being peacefully back in the privacy of his own home. His eyes popped open when he heard a meow, and a weight dropped onto his chest.
"Hey there, Oscar." He smiled, picking up his small black and white kitten. The kitten gave another meow and started to purr, curling up on Reid's chest. He absent-mindedly stroked the kitten as he stared out into his darkened house. He hadn't bothered to turn on any lights, and even though it twilight, a fair amount of light came from his sliding glass door where the streetlights below shone brightly with the rest of the city. He preferred this natural light to the fluorescent lights that stung his eyes.
He smiled down at his kitten and thought of how Matthew's plan had worked out remarkably well, despite all the complications. After he had ran away from Morgan, Guardian had tracked down Matthews's apartment, which wasn't too hard, and had managed to get in through an open window. There he had searched where Matthews had told him to look and had found the cure; then, the hard part was finding the old warehouse where Matthews had wanted him to drop off the formula, to be used later. Using the help of neighbourhood and street animals, most which had been cautious of him and his strange scent, he had managed to wander basically lost half-way across the city. In the pouring rain, with sore feet and an empty belly, clutching the container protectively, it was a small street kitten that had been brave enough to finally help him. Thanks to his directions, Guardian was able to drop off the formula and make his way back to the team. He had promised the kitten he would make it up to him, and Reid had; the very next day, after being released from the hospital that had pronounced he was unharmed, he had tracked down the kitten and taken him home.
Now, the small kitten Reid had named Oscar happily lived with Reid in his house. Reid had already made arrangements that his next-door neighbour would take care of Oscar while he was away on cases; but for now, he just savoured the feeling of the kitten's soft fur and rumbling purr.
Stretching down to grab his bag, Reid was careful not to dislodge Oscar. He chuckled lightly as he pulled some papers from his bag, thinking of how Garcia would freak when she discovered Reid had a kitten; so far, the team didn't know about Oscar.
The amusement in Reid faded away as he scanned the papers he had shifting through them. After he had become human again, and once all the hype had died down, Reid had made a visit to a trusted doctor in secret, to get him to do some tests.
He frowned, reading the results of various tests including brain scans, x-rays, and blood-work. He seemed to have, instead of the normal twenty-two pairs of chromosomes humans normally had, a shocking number of thirty pairs. It was odd, because dogs had thirty-eight pairs; Reid now had a number of chromosomes half-way between a dog and a human. Besides that, his bone structure was odd, almost disjointed; although there was a note saying that this odd development didn't seem to effect his health. And his brain scans… Those were just weird.
Reid sighed, and carefully getting to his feet, he laid Oscar back down on the couch, were the kitten curled into a ball and continued to sleep. Covering the tiny cat with a corner of an old blanket, Reid dropped his papers back down on his coffee table and headed for bed. After all, he couldn't do anything about the weird changes that had come over his body and if they didn't affect his health… Well, he couldn't really complain, not with things back to normal.
Making his way down the hallway, he unbuttoned his shirt and threw it away, not really caring if he made a mess; he'd clean up later when he wasn't so tired. A burning ache spread through Reid's body and he flexed his hands sleepily, yawning widely. With a small hop, he jumped up onto his bed, his pants abandoned on the floor. Sighing, he curled into a ball, his ears twitching drowsily. Tucking his tail over his nose, the last of the burning heat washed through his body, leaving him exhausted.
Yeah, he thought, closing his eyes, Things are back to normal. Or as normal as they ever are going to be.
Just so you guys all know, I was originally planning a sequel to this story, where even though Reid is changed back into a human he finds he can shape-shift into a dog as well. Over time, he finds he begins to lose control over these powers and it becomes more and more difficult to hide them from the team, and he was to figure out how he can stop it. Sadly, this sequel will probably never be written, although I kept the original ending because I really like it. So at the end of this story, yes, Reid shape-shifted into a dog :D Hope that clears things up.
Also pay no attention to any of the medical/science stuff going on above. I have no clue what I'm doing and I'm pretty sure having thirty pairs of chromosomes is impossible but it was one of the first scenes I had for this story so I had to add it in.
Lastly, an other enormous thank you to all of you who: favourited, followed, and reviewed me and this story! My love for you knows no bounds! I hope to see you on other projects I'm working on, which will include both more CM stories and some new Supernatural ones! However, I probably won't be uploading anything for a while; I want to get far enough into one of my stories so you guys will get regular updates. You'd like that, wouldn't you? Anyways, good-bye friends, this is The-Blackfirewolf signing off.
NOTE: This story will, many years from now probably, be rewritten and republished with new material since this story suffers from rushed writing, spelling and grammar errors, and plot holes that are a mile wide. Basically this entire thing is just a mess and one day I'll fix it (maybeeee). So, if the time for rewriting does come, would any of you be interested in beta-ing for me? Just leave a small note in any of your reviews, or message me, and I'll put it on a reference list for when I drag this story back through the mud. ALSO, JUST BECAUSE THIS STORY IS DONE DOES NOT MEAN I DON'T WANT REVIEWS. EVEN IF THIS STORY WAS WRITTEN FIVE YEARS AGO FEEL FREE TO SHOOT ME A REVIEW. I'M ALWAYS EAGER TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY, SO REVIEW AWAY MY FRIENDS AND THANK YOU SO MUCH. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE WORKING WITH YOU :D
