Title: Silent Moment

Disclaimer: I do not own CSI:NY, Anthony Zuiker and CBS do.

Author's Note: A short one-shot that came to me as I watched the 13th episode, Nine Thirteen. Not sure of what year Jo was born so I would imagine it as 1961. I also want to thank my beta for taking time out her busy schedule to beta this one-shot!

Jo was in her apartment sitting by the window with no lights except the beam coming from the moon. So many thoughts were going through her mind right now. One of which was meeting the young man who received her sister's heart.

What she had said to Grant about her sister was all true. However, two qualities did stick out, one was how much Leanne loved her family and friends and the other she was unpredictability. Jo recalled the one moment when they were young and her unpredictability kicked it.

-Late Summer 1978, Danville Estate, Tuscaloosa-

Seventeen year old Jo and sixteen year old Leanne had been lazing around on a warm summer evening, enjoying the last of days of summer before school started.

Suddenly Leanne broke the quiet and said, "Josie, how about we make a bet?"

Jo looked over at her sister, "What kind of bet?"

Leanne began, "How about when school starts, whoever gets a boyfriend first has the other do double the chores."

Jo raised one eyebrow when she heard it and thought, is Leanne serious? I just barely broke up with Troy Allen and she just ended a relationship with Bennie Joel and she wants to bet on who might get involved quicker?"

Jo was broken out of her trance when she heard Leanne, "So how about it sis?"

Not one to back down, Jo put out her hand and with a grin she said, "You're on and are so going down."

Shaking her sister's hand Leanne replied with an even bigger smirk on her face, "Oh am I now? You are so wrong."

Jo was completely out of it until she heard Ellie ask, "Mom is everything okay?"

Jo smiled, stood up and replied, "Yes it is honey. Come here."

As soon as Ellie was close enough Jo brought her daughter into a super tight hug. Although Ellie had wrapped her arms around her mother she did managed to get out, "Uh mom you're squishing me now."

Jo loosened her hug and looked her daughter's eyes and asked, "Sweetie, what are you doing home early on a Friday?"

With a lopsided grin Ellie answered, "Mom it is 11pm and I made it home right before my curfew."

Not knowing what to say next Jo asked, "Ellie, what do you remember about your Aunt Leanne?"

Going into 'scrunched face' thinking mode, "Umm I know that she makes the best apple pies and that she loved to give me sweets."

Jo smiled and said, "I learned something even more amazing on my day off and it involves your Aunt Leanne."

Seeing Ellie's eyes light up, Jo led the teen girl to the couch and proceeded to tell her day's events.
