Chapter 20 - Epilogue

One week had gone by since the Rockfort Island incident.

And while she wasn't comfortable with being confined without her consent, Alexia nonetheless kept her composure as she sat alone in the room she was in.

Of course, the only other reason she was completely calm was because of Alex's constant visits and talks with her.

Ever since they arrived in London, Alex was almost always with her, only leaving her when she really didn't need him to speak for her.

And her calm demeanour right now was also only due to the fact that Alex was standing on the other side of the one-way mirror in her room.

Alexia looked over at the mirror, smiled and gave a little wave.

On the other side of the mirror...

Alex was looking at her with a neutral look, but decided to humour himself and wave back even if she couldn't see.

Normally he would have been smiling.

But during the week that had gone by, Alex had managed to get in contact with Chris and Claire.

Suffice to say, Claire was extremely unhappy when he told her Alexia was with him.

And the reason for his neutral expression was due to what Claire had told him.

That Steve was dead.

The details didn't help ease his thoughts.

What Alexia did to Steve, injected him with the virus, causing him to mutate.

Alex sighed as he ran a hand through his hair.

While he understood Claire's hatred, he himself didn't want to dwell on the past. He felt sorry for Steve, and maybe he would have a word with Alexia about him at some point, but during his time on Rockfort Island, Alex learned an important lesson.

Dwelling on the past will only hold you back. Clinging to hatred, will cloud your better judgement, and cause you to do something reckless, that would only end up harming those close to you.

And that it's easier to forgive and forget.

Alex was so deep in his thoughts that he didn't notice the small group that joined him in the room.

He turned and faced his friends, and Matlock who he managed to get acquainted with over the week.

"Anything?" Alex asked.

Matlock nodded, "Al's coming over to the room right now."

"Good." Alex said before looking at the others, "So, how is everyone?"

Bryan shrugged, "I've been better, my sleep schedule is kinda off right now so I need to get that sorted out. No thanks to you."

Alex chuckled, then looked over at Danny. He looked at the eyepatch on Danny's right eye and asked, "Hey Danny, I forgot to ask, did you ever find out if your eye will recover?"

"Honestly, I don't know man." Danny said with a shrug, "They examined it and said that it would recover, after a long period of time. But I'm not really sure if it will dude. I get the feeling they were just telling me that because of my age."

Alex frowned, "Don't worry, Marc will pay for what he did to you, just like Jamie and the rest of them will."

Rav then decided to speak up, "Are you going to kill them Alex?"

Alex looked at her, silent for a moment before replying, "...I might not have a choice."

Rav just narrowed her eyes at him slightly, trying to gauge the emotions on his face, then added, "...Whatever you decide to do..." She then turned to Bryan and Danny, "Just know that I will have your backs."

Bryan smiled, "Thanks Rav, it means a lot."

Rav gave him a slight smile of her own, before Mia jumped in, "Don't forget about me!"

Danny rolled his eyes, "Of course we haven't forgotten about you Mia, though you can be sure you won't be stepping into anymore outbreaks, Rav will make sure of that."

It was Mia's turn to roll her eyes, "Even after Raccoon City?"

"Especially after Raccoon City." Danny said.

Damien, who had remained silent and leaned up against the wall while munching on a box of donuts, finally decided to speak up, "You guys still haven't told me everything that happened with you in Raccoon City."

"When we get the chance Damien." Alex said, "I just want to get everything else out of the way first so I can finally sit down and relax without having to think about this or that."

Bryan looked over at him, "You should also consider yourself lucky, surviving those zombie outbreaks ain't easy."

Damien shrugged, "Can't say for sure. With government guys breathing down my neck a lot with their questions and, everything, sometimes I wonder if surviving was worth it."

"Don't say that." Rav said with a frown.

Damien recoiled slightly at her response. Rav looked away from him, adding, "Don't say surviving isn't worth it. Because it is."

Silence followed for a very long moment.

Lucas then decided to break the silence and asked, "So, Alex, what are you going to do now?"

Alex shrugged, "I dunno, maybe I'll take a page out of Matlock's book and be a mercenary." He laughed.

Matlock rolled his eyes, having listened to them in silence the whole time, "Yeah yeah, whatever. Al's here now in case you haven't noticed."

Everyone turned to the one-way mirror and looked into the other room where Alexia was.

She was joined by Al and Leon.

In the room, Al was laying out pieces of paper on the table in front her. "We've reviewed everything you've told us Miss Ashford."

Alexia just smiled a little at him, "And?"

Al looked at Leon, who added, "My superiors have confirmed that all of the information you have given us is one hundred percent legitimate."

"That's good to hear." Alexia smiled.

Leon nodded, "My superiors also wanted me to pass along a word of thanks. Your information will be very invaluable in shutting down Umbrella for good."

Another nod from Alexia.

Al then spoke up again, "Now, as for the other thing. Alex heavily insisted that you are not to be held accountable for Umbrella's crimes. And that you be given freedom to move along with your life as you see fit."

Leon moved a piece of paper right in front of her, "It took some convincing, but we managed to secure your freedom Miss Ashford."

Alexia raised a brow at them slightly, "But there are conditions. Aren't there?"

Al recoiled, surprised that she knew that, "Um, yes there is actually."

"Go ahead, I'm all ears." Alexia said.

Exchanging a look with Leon, Al added in, "You will be given your freedom, and you will be allowed to live a normal life as you see fit. However, due to your association with Umbrella, and because of how important this T-Veronica virus is, and how dangerous it could be in the hands of the wrong people, I'm afraid we must put you under constant surveillance. For your safety mind you, Miss Ashford."

"The security will be limited. So you won't be feeling like you're being watched everywhere you go every second of the day." Leon said, "But there is no doubt that after they get shutdown, Umbrella will want revenge, and they will likely not hesitate to go after you. That is why we have to make sure you have protection with you at all times."

Alexia looked deep in thought for a moment, then smiled at them again, "Very well, I accept. On one condition."

Al and Leon exchanged glances, before the latter replied, "Miss Ashford, those conditions are for your freedom, what do you-"

"It's nothing demanding I can assure you." Alexia said, still smiling.

Her smile made Al feel uneasy, but he kept his composure and asked, "Ok, what is your condition for our conditions for your freedom?"

Alexia giggled a little, "It's very simple, whoever you choose to be a part of my security detail, I want Alex among them."

Yet again, Al and Leon exchanged looks, before the latter slowly replied, "Alex, told us you were likely to request that."

"I know he did." Alexia smiled.

Al and Leon looked over at the one-way mirror in the room for a moment, Al then responded, "Ok, Alex will be a part of your security, but not immediately. There are other people who have questions for him. It may be a while before we can arrange that condition."

Alexia waved her hand, "By all means, take all the time you need."

With a nod, Al and Leon left the room and closed the door behind them.

On the other side of the one-way mirror, Alex had a neutral look on his face.

"Alex, are you sure about this?" Rav asked.

Alex nodded, "Completely. After all..." He looked at her with a smirk, "I owe her."

He looked back at Alexia on the other side, smiling now.

"And if I'm gonna save lives, I've got to start somewhere, right?"

Time and again Claire tried to fight off the thought of knowing Alexia was still alive, and close to her friends at that.

But Chris helped her push those thoughts to the back of her mind and she just tried to continue on with her day walking around town with her brother.

It had been a very long time now since the two of them were together like this.

Claire knew they didn't have much time, and so she wanted to make sure they did as much as possible together before Chris had to go.

Whether it was shopping, taking photos, dining outside, even taking in the sights, Claire tried to make sure they did it all.

Chris was struggling to keep up with her somewhat, but was enjoying himself nonetheless.

Soon enough though when the sun started to set, Chris received a call.

And as Claire expected, the call was from Jill.

They were ready to move out, and Chris reluctantly drove himself and his sister to the hotel they booked for her.

It was time to start taking the fight to Umbrella before they could cause any more damage.

Chris was hesitant to leave his sister again, but Claire assured him this time, that she would be waiting for him.

She made sure to make him promise to come back to her of course, which he did.

Embracing each other, the two siblings parted ways for now.

Claire retiring to the hotel for some rest.

And Chris preparing to start taking the fight to Umbrella and their secret facilities around the world.

Claire watched him leave in silence.

She was worried about him already. Of course she was, as any sibling should.

But he kept his promise once, and she knew he would keep it again.

And knowing that all of her friends and family were safe and sound, and with Umbrella under investigation and in danger of being shutdown, Claire no longer had any reason to be afraid.

Things were finally looking good for once.

Authors Notes: And with that, I can finally and proudly say that I have, finally, finished this long and forgotten story. I could have added in more, but I figured what's there was already enough especially considering there are other things to work with.

Well then, I started this story at near enough the beginning of 2013, and here I am, finally finished it at the end of 2017. I honestly don't know what to say except I really apologise first to everyone who read this story and gave up waiting for an update. But, eh, I already stated my reasons in previous Authors Notes so I won't waste your time repeating them.

Now that this monster is finally finished, I'm going to take a break from Resident Evil fanfics for a bit and focus on finishing another story.

IMPORTANT: In the meantime, I have put up an official Poll on my Profile stating various story suggestions for what's next with Enduring the Evil. Obviously you need to have an account to vote, as far as I know there's no option to make the Poll available to people without accounts.

So if you want to see more Enduring the Evil with the guys etc, head to my profile and vote what you want me to work on next. I may also start looking for Co-Writers to help write the next Enduring the Evil, this would really help me.

Also, for those of you who have submitted OC's to me for this story and those who didn't get a chance, I've left an official submission form at the bottom of my profile.

If you want to submit your characters for the next Enduring the Evil story, because it's tradition at this point, fill out the form and send it to me in a Private Message, and if you don't have a Fanfiction account to do so, just, send it in a Review for this story if you have to, though I would prefer a PM.

As usual, please Review, the feedback is appreciated, and have a Happy New Year!
